Has anyone else noticed how often people will hold up cell phones much the way people would hold up lit lighters in days of yore? I don't know if I really approve of this new thing.
-
yeah... lighter = fire = SATAN. Not sure what cell phone equals.
-
Well it is weird, since most have a blue glow when turned on, you get the look more of ice than fire. And some bands have started saying "Take out your cell phones" to do it instead of lighters.
-
What i've noticed is these goddamn dipshits calling their friends during the middle of the show and then holding the cell phone up so their friend can here the band.
-
who cares what other people with their free time?
let them spend their cell phone minutes.

cell phone=annoying=lonely douchebag
-
i have seen people do this (at the Green Day concert) and i was like, "please, shoot me, now"
ok, lighters are cool, or were cool.
but i think the cell phone thing is horrible. maybe I'm just old.

Pretty soon you guys will find wearing pants annoying because EVERYONE is doing it.

Rob, your comment, although usually a valid point that you manage to bring up on every thread on this board, is INvalid here.
I, for example, dont mind the lighters at the concerts. but cell phones? call me a generation before cell phones, but i think its lame. but it has nothing to do with how many people are doing it.
you're not actually reading these threads are you?

I find it annoying when cute women keep their pants on... (slick guy laugh)

if only cell phones could light your cigarette
-
i can only imagine how many a heavy metal chick got their teased up hairspray laden hair light aflame by a lighter from the dude in the row behind her.
if only we had cell phones in the 80s.
no more burns.

I only called a friend once from a show he had to miss. He told me to call back when he could actually hear. It's too loud at a show to actually hear much on the other end of a phone. For some reason I find it funny to watch people with the cell phones - they generally swing them in the air while dancing...can't imagine that helps the reception.

which explains why the reception is fine when you're going 80 on the highway.
-
i also see lots of people taking photos with their phones now. that's not quite as annoying as holding it up for friends to hear, but it's close.
(sort of like the high school chicks at radiohead who called their parents and held the phone up for their folks to hear...)
They Might Be Giants got pissed when they heard someone on the phone, and actually asked the entire crowd to hold up their phones and make the ringer go off. That was silly.
Oh, and I was at some other show where the band took someone's cell phone. Then, a friend called it from in the crowd, and got to talk with the band. Damn, I forgot what show that was. But it was funny. (I need to stop drinking so much at shows.)

sarcasm, my friend, sarcasm.
your cell phone reception isn't compromised when you wave it in the air.

Probably is. Multipath in buildings is crazy and some of these modulation schemes (CDMA I am pretty sure is like this) require extremely controlled signal amplitude at the phone. Waving it around will definitely lower reception ability since the amplitude varies with the multipath and the receiver is not able to keep the basestation informed fast enough about the gain variations. In a car, the environment is a lot easier to deal with.

I was at an Our Lady Peace show at 9:30 a few years ago, when the lead singer got a cell phone away from someone in the audience who was talking on it. The lead singer, Raine Maeda, got on the phone and started yelling at the person "why aren't you at our fucking show..do you think you can just listen and not have a ticket?". Then the band went into a really loud song with a lot of feedback and he held the phone up to the speakers and amps during all of the loud, obnoxiously squeaky parts. Great stuff!

There is nothing rock n' roll about holding up cell phones to create a collective light. Additionally, unlike fire, there is no danger involved (other than going over your minutes).

well said.
nothing rock and roll about cell phones.
and you're not even using minutes by just opening your phone!
