This will be my 10th or 11th time seeing them. They can be hit or miss, but when they're on, they are pretty amazing. I think I like them more as a 4-piece actually.

when you have your id and ticket and hand ready for the waiting in line to go at that much faster a pace, the people working for a club's front face are happy and say thank you.  i like them.  they make me happy, too.

 i'm there, and then there.

i'm there for the second show, which will be my 17th or 18th time seeing them.

hey betty, i hope you're not gonna be one of those annoying kids who go to sonic youth shows and call for them to "play a song" when they're in the middle of a feedback freak-out.   :p

i like the fact that there will be a live web cast of the show on npr.org.  not sure if it's the first or second one.

also find it interesting that the second show hasn't sold out.

and it's interesting (to me, atleast) that this is the only internet board that i post on.

I'm going to the second show.  The set list for the show in NYC was the new record, with two older songs, Eric's Trip and something else.  I know they usually stick with new material, but I hope they shake it up a bit.  I mean, they are playing two shows in one night.  Maybe they will bust out the back catalog for one of them.  And I've seen them only twice, both over ten years ago.  Goddamn I feel old.

I guarantee they'll do the new record for both shows, then maybe switch out a couple of oldies for both shows. There really isn't any big great variation in their set lists when they are on a tour. In 2002 that's when they really dug out some older stuff, which was fun.

Nope, in an ideal world, yes...but they will very likely do the new record plus three or four old ones for each show. The older songs will be different for sure  :)

all of you early show-ers...i think there should be a serious forum party at the Page France black cat show, post Sonic Youth.  what do you think?  i think yes.

What do you folks think of the record? I think it's easily one of the best things they've done in a long time, and I LOVED Murray Street.

There were so many kids there. . even younger than Betty and I.  It was surprising.

It was an excellent first Sonic Youth experience for me.  I think my neck hurts from staring up at Thurston.

Yea, Thurston was amazing. I want him to tell us more stories about 'grits...that were historic'. Plus the music/feedback was amazing. props to ranaldo for breaking out a bow on that one song.

I thought it was great.  It started out fairly low energy, but they started to really hit stride about half way in.  100% and the other song from Dirty were worth the price of admission by themselves.

I haven't heard Rather Ripped yet, but am pretty inspired to pick it up.

Anyone know the complete lyrics or general meaning of Do You Believe in Rapture?  Please tell me my favorite band isn't Jesus freaks.

I agree with Matts. The show started slowly. I found Kim's slow-tempo, deep-voiced singing almost somnambulent at the beginning. I'm not sure if it was me (because I came straight from work and maybe wasn't in the proper mood yet) or the new material (which hasn't had time to grow on me yet). But right around a half hour into the show, it really picked up and the rest of the show was excellent. I would have liked to have had more Thurston songs as well. They were the highlights of the show as far as I'm concerned.

I left work early and I still missed Be Your Own Pet. Were they any good?

if you were forced to the first show i would ask for my $ back.  the 2nd show was much better.  better sound and playing.  mosh pit and lots of stage diving.  some stagedivers actually hugged tm + lr. some fat guy from the audience was on stage for the entire last encore doing some weird stuff.  people were also smoking weed.  lots of old dc punk dignitaries in the house.  best audience comment of the night was "i spent $25 to see eric's trip".

I was underwhelmed by the first show, didn't see the second one, but if they played Eric's Trip then I'll be PISSED. We got PCH, Drunken Butterfly, and 100%. That was about it. I think I'm missing another one, but can't remember what it was. What older stuff did they play for the second show?

Oh well. I'm just glad I got to see them in Rome the time they played "Candle", "Kissability", "Silver Rocket", "Bull in the Heather", "Cotton Crown", "Eric's Trip", AND "Kool Thing". I wish they'd dig out a few more older songs.

Title: Re: SONIC YOUTH ROLL CALL - Early Show
Post by: you be betty on June 16, 2006, 11:39:00 am
oh, great.  well that's what i was afraid of.  the first show definitely picked up about half way through or so, and i can imagine that the second show was higher energy - they tend to be that way.  and that's it.  i'm not going to launch into a huge complaint here or anything like that because it isn't the biggest deal in the world, but the bottom line is that the club shouldn't go about saying that adding another show won't change the performance.  they obviously didn't use the same setlist between shows.  additionally, SY strikes me as the type of group that would have started a show at 6:30 and jammed much later than the time they were instructed to go off.  aside from all that, it's my personal philosophy that they shouldn't be putting a cap time on music, BUT...it's a business.  and that i have no say in.  right now i'm grateful enough that i actually got to see them.

aside, 100% was AMAZING.  Thurston was great, he played literally on top of us for most of the show.  got some great pictures.  the setlist for the first show reads as follows...
(and if anyone has one from the second show, please, let's compare)

 Jams
 Pink Steam
 Reena
 Incinerate
 Drunken
 Lights Out
Rapture? <---- that song was beautiful
 Neutral
 pch
 Rats
 100%
 What A Waste
 ----------------
 Turquoise Boy
 Or
 ----------------
 Shaking Hell

Title: Re: SONIC YOUTH ROLL CALL - Early Show

didn't see them, but mark fucking ibold was on bass!

the second show's setlist was better, so i'm glad i saw that one instead (i'm pretty bored of "drunken butterfly" and "100%", which are two of the most common live songs). i still don't have the new album, but the set was all new songs, except for "pattern recognition", which was third i believe.

first encore was "eric's trip"/"shaking hell". the latter was the highlight for me because in the 18 or so times i've seen this band, that was the first time i've seen that particular song. its darkness also brought some catharsis after the otherwise peppy and upbeat new material.

second encore was "brother james", which absolutely ripped.

although i like the new songs, they are all mostly direct and similar (regarding tempo and mood). even SY's so-called "pop" record (dirty) contained some darker hues (like "theresa's soundworld" and "wish fulfillment"). my initial impression is that it isn't that dynamic and wide-ranging. i'll pick it up soon and then pass judgment after i listen to it a few times.

Weird, I did see a guy that looked like Nastanovich, but kind of just shrugged it off after seeing Ibold on bass. Thought maybe it was just because my mind was on Pavement already.

Someone yelled Summer Babe in the crowd last night during the first show.  Made me laugh for sure.  Ibold was totally great last night and really makes a big impact.  He has that signature laid back style that really works when the other guitarists are all loco.  I hope this is the band that they stick with for a while.  Mark's as good a vibe as ever and perfect in Sonic Youth.

Saw second show.  Setlist was the new record with "Pattern Recognition" thrown in early on - maybe the third song.  Im not really familiar with new record but I've heard it and it seemed that they almost played it in order. Then they ended with Eric's Trip, Shaking Hell, Brother James.  Not a bad audience.  I didn't know crowd surfing was still in, but it was funny seeing fans running around onstage hugging the band.

I was there and SY pretty much own my soul, but I have to say it was the least awesome SY show I've ever seen....and I really liked RR. I've seen 100% and Drunken so many times so it was kind of a let down. They haven't busted out any gems other than Shaking Hell, but they've played that every show on the tour.
