i only went to 14 this year and 4 (smashing pumpkins) i didn't particularly enjoy nearly as much as the other 10.  i guess that makes those my top 10 by default.

 edit:
 #1, by a mile, though:  slint @ cat's cradle.

QOTSA was pretty stunning. Of course, Josh isn't cool so maybe that should make me rethink that. They were on Anthony Bourdain's "No Reservations" holiday special last night, which I thought was great. Now I don't have to feel guilty for eating fois gras.

Wow, this is like the only thread that "Brian Wallace" hasn't come in and shit all over and made it totally about him and what he hates and thinks is lame and "look at me, look at me, look at me, I make controversial statements, I pretend to be so at odds!" Just the douchiest of the douches.

I don't do "Best of", "Favorite" or "Top 10" lists.  I think they're trite and show someone who is insecure in their opinions.

How do you manage to exist on this board? Bravo for not getting sucked into the conformist indie mentality of this board (as I have to some degree).

At work I listen to indie 97.9 on the web and during the drive home it's the oh-so-hated clear channel stations. I go to small club and coffee house shows but I can't say they would top any best of list or that they're the ones I get really excited about.  As for surviving on this board, I guess I'm intrigued by the indie-conformist mentality or I'm just easily entertained.

I saw quite a bit fewer club/arena shows this year than I have in the last five or six years [33 versus usually over 50].  I did go to two multi-day festivals, which was new for me.

 - Sloan, Black Cat, Sun May 13
 - You Am I, SxSW
 - Hoodoo Gurus & Mooney Suzuki, SxSW
 - The Hold Steady, Lollapalooza
 - QOTSA, Ram's Head Live, Wed 9/26
 - Morrissey, Wolftrap July 2
 - Spoon w/ The Ponys, 9:30, Oct 23
 - The National, the Rosebuds, 9:30, Sept 6
 - The Hold Steady, Art Brut, Terminal 5/NYC, Nov 21
 - The Police, Boardwalk Hall (AC), Nov 3

The Who and Bruce Springsteen at Verizon each get honorable mention.  The Who should probably be on the list....

I missed a bunch of shows I really wanted to see like The Hives....

I know I'll get a lot of crap for this, but hey, its what I enjoy and I had fun at the concert which is what really matters to me.  And I actually only went to 10 shows.  So only the top 7 were counted.

 1.  Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony- Verizon Center (I'm not even going to explain since no one will care the reason)
 2.  The Killers, Silver Beats, Red Romance- Patriot Center
 3.  Cartel, Cobra Starship, Boys Like Girls- 9:30 Club (Cobra was amazing, the others ehhh)
 4.  Bayside (opened for Anberlin)- 9:30 Club
 5.  Third Eye Blind, The Upwelling- Richie Coliseum (University of MD)
 6.  The Hush Sound, My Favorite Highway- Rock N Roll Hotel
 7.  Tim McGraw and Faith Hill- Verizon Center

 On the Comedy Front:

 1. Kathy Griffin- Kennedy Center

I'm interested.  I won't make fun on you.  Whatever you like is what you like.  You must like famous, married, singing couples.  Having witnessed both of them, who do you think has the better sex life?  Was there any onstage sexual tension that you could detect?

the question for me (and, i suspect, brennser) is why so many people voted for the national @ 930 show.  we both thought it was a huge disappointement.  personally, it was probably my worse show of the year.

this was the year that old age/having two kids caught up with me!! I didn't go to very many shows beyond the ones I DJ'ed (and really regret not seeing The Veils or Jens Lekman but such is life) - that being said here are the ones I enjoyed the most in no particular order

 Camera Obscura @ 9.30

Well, it was uncoordinated from start to finish (venue/band/audience). I really appreciate the 930 club and BC when I watch shows in other cities. It was a 10:30 start time, but they kept us waiting in the cold on the sidewalk until just before 12. No reasons were given. Sly came out and did a spontaneous "rap" before members of the family came out seemingly confused. sly's voice is still great (it might be even better than when he was young) but he would only sing about 1 or 2 lines out of any given song when he actually was out there. he was preoccupied with a vocoder (i think that's what it's called) where he would talk into a mic and the keyboard would control its pitch. the band didn't really know what the hell was going on and was as confused as the audience when sly would up and leave the stage. they turned the house lights on a bunch of times before sly stumbled back to noodle through another song.

the unfortunate thing is that this could have been an incredible show. but sly's music really benefits with tight playing. this was anything but. they need a real leader out there, even if it isn't sly, to help them get their shit together.

about 1/3 of the audience was pissed and some chanted stuff at sly, but the rest ate it up. i guess i was somewhere in the middle. i didn't feel like he was intentionally slighting the audience like bob dylan or anything, but he might just have mental problems or stage fright. i do think he was trying to put on a good show. and it was pretty good. i'm really glad i saw it; he's written some incredible tunes.

Thanks for the review. Wish I could've caught him in his prime. Sheer genius! His Dick Cavett interview was priceless back in his heyday. He basically took over the show with his charisma and sheer presence. By the end of the show, he was pretty much interviewing the other guests while Cavett sat there dumbfounded.
Sorry to hear he seemed subpar but at least you got to see a legend.Sounds like there might not be many tours left in Sly.Good to hear he's still trying to give his best shot though.

The 1st youtube vid is the one I was talking about. Once Sly's segment was over he moved to allow the Senator and his wife to be interviewed. Cavett seemed somewhat ill at ease when the subject turned to the Senator's wife's ethnicity. Sly ended up carrying the interview from that point on discussing discrimination and was spot on, completly connecting with the Senator and his wife, while Cavett sat speechless.

I enjoyed this interview.I'd never seen it before today. Gotta love youtube!

That sounds great - can't find it.  Apparently there is a DVD box set of Cavett episodes that has the whole show on it.

I happen to like Kathy Griffin.  She's a lot funnier than any of the Jim Gaffigan/ Larry the Cable Guy crowd.  All of them recycle the same jokes.  And apparently I'm not alone in liking her in that in that she sold out Kennedy Center twice and DAR on 3 straight nights.

As far as the J.Lo and Tim McGraw thing.  The Tim McGraw concert was a gift to my mom for mother's day in which I went with her.  And I've always wanted to see Jennifer Lopez live, and finally got the chance.  And Marc Anthony sounds great live.

Hey, I liked your choices.  Kathy Griffin's funny.  They flamed me a while ago for saying Dane Cook was funny.  Most of the boarders here don't feel complete unless they've ridiculed someone else's personal tastes.  It makes them feel better.  I only ridicule ass-kissing, dick-sucking idol worship ("Thom Yorke is God", "Bruce Springsteen is God", "Daft Punk live are God", etc.), smug pretentiousness and nostalgia.

Kathy Griffin is dating Paul Allen isn't she?  And Chelsea Handler is dating the CEO of Comcast.  I guess Lisa Lampanelli should be stalking one of the Google guys, shouldn't she?

I see that it was in January, I didn't read the board back then. I'm still not sure how I missed it  considering I was on their site/myspace/ebay looking for tickets for their LA show 2 weeks later. I didn't find good seats so I passed on that show thinking they would come to the 9:30 club eventually.  I think I need to borrow that LOLCAT FAIL picture.

Agreed. She's awful to look and and awful to listen to.

I'm not sure why people pay money to hear jokes told. Why not just tell your own? My wife is as funny as any comedienne I've ever seen on tv.

And saying comedian x is funnier than Larry the Cable Guy is like saying singer y is better than Toby Keith.

Something is definitely wrong with your good/bad filters if you can easily list 25 of the best shows you saw this year.

 8. High Strung, XYZ Affair @ BC backstage, 2/18
 9. Nethers @ BC, 3/9
 10. Stellastarr, Soft Complex @ RnR Hotel, 2/13

Spoon and Okkervil River are way out in front.

Paul Weller at Irving Plaza on "Jam night" - What was touted as "An evening of Paul Weller playing the songs of The Jam" ended up being Weller playing 8 Jam songs, torturing the audience with 15 songs that sounded like Steve Winwood covers, and then finishing up with another Jam number.  The audience, many of whom had paid top dollar for their tickets and/or flown in from far away to attend, seemed kinda pissed.  I'd give the show a B-minus.  It makes my Top 10 list because I got to skip two days of work and take a train up to NYC with three of my friends.  And Weller opened with "Shopping" which is such an asshole move that it still makes me laugh every time I think about it.

The Lodger at The Velvet Lounge - This was probably the best show I saw all year -- a skinny twee kid playing a really tight set of incredibly hooky guitar pop.  The Public Record opened and played cool soundtracky stuff.  In grand DC tradition, there were about 20 people in attendance, most of whom were over 35.

The Pipettes at The Black Cat - Their outfits are crummy and they sound more like Toni Basil than The Ronettes but they were mighty entertaining.  The rest of the packed house seemed to agree.

The Hodoo Gurus at The Black Cat - Balding Aussies bring the rock to a depressingly empty house.  Fake Accents do a nice job opening up.

Apples In Stereo at the 9:30 - Balding Americans bring the pop to a depressingly empty house.  Aqueduct does a nice job opening up.

Georgie James at Fort Reno - Georgie James are my favorite local band right now.  They're always tight and they remind me of the Zombies.  Best of all, it was free.

LCD Soundsystem at the 9:30 Club - They played every song I wanted to hear in a really tight fashion.  Since I don't get out much, this easily qualifies them for my top 10.

The Lemonheads at The Black Cat - Recruiting Bill Stevenson and Karl Alvarez paid big dividends for Dando.  They kept him reined in whenever the wheels were threatening to come off and didn't let him do his shambolic solo set until the encore.  I've seen The Lemonheads five times over the last 20 years and this was the first time they were actually good.

The Oranges Band at The Red and the Black - The Oranges Band are my fourth favorite band.  Since they're from Baltimore, I get to see them play regularly for under $10.  As always, they were good.

Georgie James at The Black Cat - (See above.  Ignore the "Best of all, it was free" part.)

1)  PJ Harvey @ Beacon Theater
 2)  Daft Punk @ Red Rocks
 3)  Arcade Fire @ Red Rocks
 4)  Polyphonic Spree @ 9:30
 5)  Bjork @ Fox Theater
 6)  Queens of the Stone Age @ Electric Factory
 7)  The Go! Team @ 9:30
 8)  Fujiya & Miyagi and Escort @ Barnard College
 9)  Lucinda Williams @ Wolftrap
 10) Spoon @ Monolith Festival

I don't know where she'd fit in there, but Tori Amos in Anaheim was probably one of the best shows I've seen in my life.

 Honorable Mention:

Snoop Dogg's showcase back in December at LA Live.

I was at all three of those shows and the  second night spotlighting the Style Council songs was the best.  The band and audience was really into the entire show.  They even uncorked a incredibly tight version of a "A Town Called Malice", which they basically slept through the first night.

I'm guessin' that Weller is more than a bit miffed that even after years of recording as a solo artist with IMHO a solid body of work, that even the slightest mention of the Jam and people lose their minds... Not sure which night it was, but his performance of "Butterfly Collector" really hearkened back to his angry young man days.

1) -bk, you're alive!  glad you're back/resurfaced.  two months and no word of you... glad you survived the road trip.
 2) given the fact that you have seen more shows than just about anyone here, it's an impressive feat that you stuck to a top 10, and not a top 50.  well done.
 3) PJ = #1?  really?  damn good show, but interesting choice nonetheless. .

1) Two months following that tour has KILLED me. I *just* got back to DC recently and I need to get back in my groove! Patti Smith was my "homecoming" show of sorts.

 2) Yeah, I'm shocked myself.

 3) Yes. That show STILL haunts me. Her performance of "The Piano", "Down By the Water", and "Man Size" were stellar.

 4) I do!!! Next time you're here we'll fuck it up on my tab!

I've heard that from a number of people.  I really wanted to attend that second night as well but I  didn't relish the idea of telling my wife that I was going to leave her with the kids for three days to attend a couple of concerts.

Are you going to check out From the Jam?  I have tickets to the DC and NY shows.  I bought the NY ticket before they announced the DC show so I might try to unload it.

Hugh is actually the opening act rather than the substitute singer.  The guy fronting FTJ is named Russell and, purportedly, does a pretty good job.  I've got pretty low expectations so I don't imagine I'll be disappointed.  And, at a minimum, "Smithers-Jones," "News of the World" and "Carnaby Street" will sound just like the records.

I am going to "from the Jam" as well, and can't wait to here the songs live. They palyed at UMD in 82 or 83, and I have oftened kicked myself for not going. I know it won't be the real think without Weller, but should still be fun. Also, I did see the Stranglers a few times, and Hugh was really the best part. I am hoping he has a sharp young band and can still pull it off.
