I like how you get a free MP3 download of the album when you purchase its vinyl version these days, I just never have any reason to download more than once, so I'll spread the wealth in this thread (others should feel free to do the same)

Spin magazine is going crazy with its July issue, celebrating the 25th anniversary of Prince's "Purple Rain" with a comprehensive oral history of the film and album and a free downloadable tribute that features nine bands doing song-for-song covers of the record's classic tracks.
Dubbed "Purplish Rain," the album boasts a real coup: Apollonia, the one-time Prince protegee who starred in the film, contributes a cover of "When Doves Cry" that she recorded with Greg Dulli and his band, the Twilight Singers.
Other cover versions on the album include Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings doing "Take Me With U," Of Montreal's take on "Computer Blue," a punk-mariachi version of "I Would Die 4 U" and Lavender Diamond's rendition of the title track.
The Apollonia/Dulli duet is currently streaming at Spin.com, and the full downloadable album will be available when the magazine hits the streets on June 23. The album download is free, but a clue from the magazine article will be required for access.
"We approached a bunch of bands, and we got nine who were really into it," Spin editor Doug Brod told Billboard.com. "All these bands did it for free -- they paid for all of their recording time and they mastered all the tracks themselves."
Unlike several other Prince cover records that have run afoul of The Artist's wishes, SPIN cleared all of the tracks and is covering the royalty expenses.
The 10-page oral history was compiled and written by Brian Raftery, who spoke to most of the key participants in the original project, including Wendy and Lisa, other members of the Revolution and the Time, Bob Cavallo (the film's producer and Prince's manager at the time), director Albert Magnoli, and the original screenplay writer William Blinn. Prince and the Time's main man Morris Day did not participate.
"We did a full court press to get Prince himself involved," said Brod. "He's a pretty tough guy to get a hold of, and he doesn't dwell much on nostalgia."

They have 6 full length (don't really wanna count Storytelling as an album). The Boy with the Arab Strap is as good as Sinister, I think. But each of their albums has at least 3-4 stellar tracks...I love them all actually...

ted leo is ok, puts on a decent show, but i've never understood the veneration that some give him. i've heard reliable rumors that sade will tour north america in support of their upcoming album in late summer/early fall. i'll be all over that.

yup, i posted that. i saw phish twice in the past 2 years, and enjoyed both shows. they weren't life-changing or mind-blowing experiences - but i had a good time.
i lived 2 years in princeton and would have killed for something this cool to come through. there were a few ok acts that played but i always seemed to miss them. i did catch akron/family at an "alternative frat-house". they were horrible. the show was free, they had free beer, but i would have been better off staying at home that night and stabbing #2's into my ears.
get over downloading already. it's free, it's being distributed with the artist's permission, and it's a high-quality recording. enjoy the gift already :)

As most of you know, I have a free online radio station called Air Atlantic Underground Radio (http://www.live365.com/stations/airatlantic). Mostly Shoegaze, Psychedelic, Dream, Bliss, Drone, Ambient, Electronica and the like.
Having just entered its 3rd year on the air, I decided to finally start a website for the station. Actually, it's a blog that I use as a website. It's only been online for a few days now so I'm still stumbling around and there's not a whole lot there yet. It will grow, in time.

Some bands will actually give away very high quality MP3s and that too is to promote their music. You will find plenty of those on Bandcamp which allows you to download to whatever size or file type you prefer. I think Bandcamp limits them to 100 freebies but then the band can choose to offer it for one of those you name your price things. You'll find a lot of those on Bandcamp. The trick is finding the music you like as they aren't that great for locating if you just go in via their homepage. Too much weeding through crap. Best is to find a method where bands you tend to like push their wares and link you up to their Bandcamp page. These are often lesser known bands who aren't making much, or anything at all, the traditional ways so sometimes they prefer just to get get their music heard. Many of them do it hoping that you will buy a physical copy, especially when they are trying to defeat the pirate sites.
A lot of newer bands will give entire digital albums away just to get their name out there and develop a name for themselves. Once they start developing a following, then you'll tend to see the entire album freebies go away. All part of their marketing budget, so to speak. Between the major labels not touching them because they aren't Bieber, Kanye or Radiohead, if a label does take them on, they usually lose so much to them, sometimes with no results, so they figure they may as well go directly to the fans.
For bands with a higher name recognition, when they give high quality MP3s away, it's because they want to make sure their music sounds good while hoping that you buy the entire release.
It's all a marketing ploy. And then there are the bands who just don't have enough interest by others and know it so they just give it all away hoping that someone will listen.

Friends Records 2011 is out tomorrow, a free digital and limited double-cassette release available Thanksgiving Day. Citypaper premiered the opening track, a new Celebration song called "Sure Shot" that was recorded in the band's own Night Worm Studios.
Mark at YVYNYL uncovered another preview last week, Weekends' "Basement Fuzz."
The compilation was mastered for cassette by Rob Giradi at Lord Baltimore, and the artwork for the double-tape packaging comes compliments of Will Pesta.
The track list of this annual affair boasts a hefty supply of Baltimore heroes, with an unreleased Future Islands song recorded for KEXP, a recently recorded Dan Deacon track, the debut of Jenn Wasner's (Wye Oak) Flock of Dimes, new explorations by Jason Urick, a stark reminder of the return of Oxes, a lost gem from Dustin Wong and Molly Siegel, a new-anything wonder from Matt Papich's Co La, and more.
It also sports an Arthur Russell cover by Soft Cat, fresh digs from Holy Ghost Party, a hearty dose of sugar by Will Pesta's Inflatable Mattress, a new live jam from Lands and Peoples, some exclusive hard-nosed tomfoolery from Witch Hat, another psychedelic gift from Secret Mountains, and a lot more. I understand they probably did that to sound better for the sort of presentation they were after but it's difficult to figure out what you're listening to in order to pursue that individual artist any further.

I do not have numbers yet, want to generate a report in early 2012. But the reasons are: a) We launched twelve works of exceptional quality. We have never received so much resonance - blogs, Brazilians and gringos sites, newspapers, social networks, all disks have affected in some way. And the most fun this December is to follow the Best of the Year lists - many of them highlighting works released by the label b) produce four editions of Sinewave Festival in cities such as Curitiba, Porto Alegre and Rio de Janeiro, with bands of the casting and invited . All editions promised making the noise, and c) Everything that was derived from these two items above.
All this in music betting "wrong." Ships paraphrase Jair, who on the last day 15/dez gave a speech in honor of Herod, a band that opened his show: "They are guys who believe in what they do, even doing a job with no commercial appeal." Extend it to all the bands that started their work with us this year, all of which are part of our history, and all orbiting around the seal and not part - or at least not yet.
So this Sinewave Essentials - The Best of 2011 . A like the most, either through a click or feel that increasingly rare "but how come I never heard that before?", and every effort will be worth it. Work here because each has something besides the default - is punch, is a different idea, or more elaborate, genius is something unreasonable, something that is confusing to follow the aesthetic of "because".
HUEY , LAVALSA , DISASTER THE TAPE , THIS LONELY CROWD , ALMA MATER , THE MACHINE ON , Solemn UPPSALA , NOISE / MM , TEAM.RADIO , SUM , KALOUV . Eleven bands from all parts of Brazil, ranging from metal to post-rock experimental indie loud the spleen with violins, the shoegaze pop appeal with the post-industrial.
All this is to pave the next year - more albums, more gigs, more festivals, more noise than in 2011. Because 2012 will be the best year of Sinewave. Fired.

Tommy is one of the better supporters of the whole scene so not surprising at all. Super Toys are pretty good. In fact, to date, I really love everything that Joey has been involved in, still with my favorite being SPC ECO. Of course, that's a combination of pure perfection all around.
Can't make it up for Dead Leaf Echo & The Water. Also, I highly doubt that I can make it up for Alcest either though that one's still a slight possibility.
However, I will be up for Spiritualized. That's going to be one serious PITA fighting 3 cities worth of rush hour traffic to get there by 7:00. Really, really wish that were a late show. The things I do for that band! If I could afford a hotel, I'd just go straight to DC instead but no way can I afford DC prices.

^ The more I hear this, and a few others from Starfire Connective Sound, the more I'm really liking them.
For some dumb reason, I didn't realize until today that an acquaintance of mine is the main band member in this band. He's a very active participant in my network of music friends, and the person I got the lead from, but it just went over my head that it was his band. He's great at talking up good music and I never really saw him stating it was his band.

Anything by the label Phantasma Disques is usually good, Salem, oOoOO, Mascara, //TENSE// , Story of Isaac aka CRIM3S, Creep, High Park, Black Ceiling (or BLVCK Ceiling or one of the other ways his name gets written), Special Darkness (used to be known as Audrey Horne), Pwin Teaks and the Children of New H, releases on Disaro label, releases on Tri Angle (esp Evian Christ, that man rocks!), White Ring, Purity Ring...
I would suggest http://www.witch-house.com/forum/index.php as a good source. BUT, watch out for the bandwagon jumpers, lots of people making crap too, so you gotta wade through it, but definitely worth it.

If I understand you correctly the answer would be check on the left hand menu for "free". It used to be on the right lower. Or search $0-3.99 downloads. (Edit: that is gone now see my link below)
They used to do a song of the day free, but no more. And they removed the link on the Amazon daily deals front page for free song of day about a year ago. I think they just now offer free songs for 5 days remove and/or add to the list below every week.

thanks for the tip. the links to free are on amazon's page, if you don't check their fb/twitter you just have to check daily. (I used to every day but stopped when they didn't post each day, or I forgot. so i agree, it's tough to have to do it manually vice an announcement/sent link from vendor)

anyways here is one of my favorite albums... I used to own the original rough trade but somebody stole it from me or something happened.... so I finally caved and bought the kill rock stars reissue.. the only nice thing about this horrible thing is that the reissue adds their first single which is one of their best tracks (fairytale in the supermarket)...I tend to really dislike reissues...I will wait years hoping to find the original before I buy a reissue..but sometimes you have to cave..... if I had a top 100 albums (no compilations allowed) I think this would be on it.. I keep returning to it year after year and finding stuff I love.. Do I feel bad that I missed them at Comet? yeah.. but it was raining cats and dogs and I had just gotten out of a wake so I went home...
