Pretty excited for hockey, as usual. I think it'll be Russia ruining Canada's party with the Swedes taking the bronze.

should canada make it to the gold medal game (fingers crossed, knock on wood, etc), do you have any idea how rockin' that arena is going to be?  oh man.  the dreams of a nation under one roof... instant epic.

IDK, that Swedish team is as old as the US team is green. Now that I'm thinking about it, I probably like Finland for the bronze.

good point, but its only 6 games. i guess the quick turn around would be troublesome but i still think they can out pass most teams. really i just want to pick someone to beat the russians and not be all chalk

I think Russia/Canada is a dream matchup. Just on "wow" factor alone, their lineups are ridiculous. Marty St Louis, Shane Doan, and Alexander Frolov aren't on their respective country's lineups -- whereas they're top 6 (if not top 3) forwards on any other roster.

Ha, I misread that last night and thought he meant best three hockey tournaments and I was thinking "no shit, Stanley Cup playoffs, Olympics, and IIHF WJC... what else is there? That makeshift Euro-Champions league thing they tried to do for 2-3 years?"

Also since we're talking hockey, I figured some of you would appreciate this:

In my fantasy hockey league, I had the #2 overall pick and took Ovechkin (someone took Crosby #1 in a league where goals get 5 points and assists only 3... wtf?). The guy who had the #4 pick took Malkin and traded me Malkin, Gaborik, and Quick for Ovechkin. Combine that with Heatley somehow falling to my second pick at #15 and suffice to say, the January Jonestown Massacre are running away with the league.

Luger Killed in Crash  (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/13/sports/olympics/13luge.html?hp)

A luge athlete from Georgia, Nodar Kumaritashvili, was killed in a crash in training on the Olympic track at the Whistler Sliding Center on Friday, an Olympic luge official at the track confirmed, the worst case scenario developing on a track that many competitors have said is too fast.

Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled 48 seconds into his run, near the end of the track. According to the speed clock on the broadcast, he was going 143.3 kph -- 88 mph ? and was propelled over the track wall. He slammed into a steel pole near the finish line.

Officials from the international luge federation and Olympic officials did not immediately confirm his condition, nor where he was taken after rescue officials removed him from the track.

Medical officials rushed to the scene and were performing chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, the Associated Press reported. Kumaritashvili was lifted into an ambulance. An air-rescue helicopter was summoned and was over the track about eight minutes after the crash.

Kumaritashvili struck the inside wall of the track on the final turn. His body immediately went airborne and cleared the ice-coated concrete wall along the left side of the sliding surface. His sled remained in the track, and it appeared his helmet visor skidded down the ice.

?It?s a very rare situation,? Georg Hackl, the three-time Olympic champion and German coach, told the A.P. ?But there?s some things that you can?t do anything about.?

Many sliders have exceeded 90 miles an hour on this course. The track is considered the world?s fastest and several Olympians recently questioned its safety. More than a dozen athletes have crashed during Olympic training.

At the finish area, not far from the crash scene, athletes, coaches and officials solemnly awaited word on Kumaritashvili.

?I?ve never seen anything like that,? said Shiva Keshavan, a four-time Olympian from India. ?I?m afraid it?s bad.?

Training was suspended indefinitely, International Luge Federation members were called for a briefing and team captains from each nation were asked to attend a meeting.

Kumaritashvili competed in five World Cup races this season, finishing 44th in the world standings.

Earlier in the day, the gold-medal favorite, Armin Zoeggeler of Italy, crashed, losing control of his sled on Curve 11. Zoeggeler came off his sled and held it with his left arm to keep it from smashing atop his body. He slid on his back down several curves before coming to a stop and walking away.

Training days in Whistler have been crash-filled. A Romanian woman was briefly knocked unconscious and at least four Americans ? Chris Mazdzer on Wednesday, Megan Sweeney on Thursday and both Tony Benshoof and Bengt Walden on Friday in the same training session where Zoeggeler wrecked ? have had serious trouble just getting down the track.

?I think they are pushing it a little too much,? Hannah Campbell-Pegg of Australia said Thursday night after she nearly lost control in training. ?To what extent are we just little lemmings that they just throw down a track and we?re crash-test dummies? I mean, this is our lives.?

Uh... upgrade for Sweden? Holmstrom has a nagging injury, he could go; I think he knew not being at 100% wasn't going to help Sweden or Detroit so he sat it out and let a much better player take his spot.

heart-breaker that heil didn't win in moguls,

I was giving Sweetcell time to tout the first Canadian Gold on home soil, but he hasn't so I'll pipe up.

I love myself more than most others love themsleves, but even I was happy to see Alexandre Bilodeau beat Dale Begg-Smith at home, as a citizen of French-Canada and not some half-cooked idea of getting citizenship somewhere else because he didn't want to practice as hard as everyone else on the team.

That's called a comeuppance moneybags, and you just got yours.  And in front of all in your old hometown no less.  Spam that.

sorry, it's been a stupid 3-4 days here but indeed the gold was a very memorable moment.  i was working sunday night when he won the medal, i just happened to refresh ESPN when the newsflash hit the site.  i turned on the tv in time to watch the replay of his run.  highlight: having his girlfriend rip him away from the post-win interview and plant a big wet one on him, on international television.  it was both epic and hot ;D  bet: bilodeau's face is on a stamp in the next 2 years.

btw, #2 came tonight ;D

Zamboni Laments Brand Confusion Over Olympic Ice Machines (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=a4w.kX3yqtD0&pos=14)

Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- It wasn?t a Zamboni. That?s the message from Frank J. Zamboni & Co. after reports from the Winter Olympics suggested the ice-cleaning machines that leaked and forced delays in speedskating events were made by the U.S. manufacturer.

?It was widely reported that these machines were Zamboni machines, which in fact they were not,? Zamboni said in a statement yesterday, adding it?s ?deeply concerned? about the situation.

An Olympia ice-cleaning machine made by Zamboni?s rival, Resurfice Corp. of Canada, leaked water in the middle of at least two events during the Games, leading to an hour delay at the men?s 500-meter speedskating event on Feb. 15 at the Richmond Oval.

Reports by media including the New York Times said the delays were caused by a broken ?Zamboni.? The ice- cleaner is synonymous with the machine that sweeps hockey rinks around the world, much as Kleenex is used to describe tissues.

Charles Schulz, the creator of ?Peanuts? and an avid hockey fan, was so enamored with the Zamboni that he made it a recurring element in his comic strip, with Snoopy behind the wheel.

The two machines used to clean the speedskating oval in Vancouver are Olympia brands, made by Elmira, Ontario- based Resurfice. Though Zamboni machines were used to clean the ice at the Winter Games in 1994, 1998, 2002 and 2006, Resurfice won the contract for the Vancouver Games. The firm supplied 17 battery-powered machines at the Vancouver Olympic rinks used for hockey, speedskating and figure skating.

Problem Solved

The breakdowns were the result of an ?electrical malfunction,? according to a statement from Resurfice.

?This was a maintenance issue, not a design issue,? said Don Schlupp, director of sales and marketing at the family owned company. ?Contrary to what some reports have suggested, these machines are not prototypes. They have been in service at the Oval for almost two years, and this problem has never occurred before.?

?The problem was minor and we?ve got it fixed,? Schlupp said.

The breakdowns have given Zamboni a chance to take part in the Games after all. The Vancouver Olympic Committee shipped a Zamboni machine from Calgary, about 680 kilometers (422 miles) to the east across the Rocky Mountains.

Last night, the white Zamboni machine shared ice- cleaning duties during the men?s 1,000-meter speedskating event with an Olympia machine, which was painted in the green, white and blue colors of the Vancouver Games.

Higher Power

John Furlong, chief executive officer of the Vancouver Olympic committee, said organizers didn?t consider sponsorships as they tried to solve the ice-cleaning problem.

?I don?t have any opinion on any of the marketing questions,? he told reporters in Vancouver. ?The higher power here is that the venue must be perfect -- we have to have certainty. We now think we have it.?

Paula Coony, general manager of Zamboni?s merchandising arm, declined to comment after issuing the statement signed by Richard Zamboni, whose father, Jack, founded the company about six decades ago in Paramount, California.

While men?s 1,000-meter silver medalist Tae-Bum Mo said the ice was ?soft,? the condition of the ice wasn?t a distraction to gold-medal winner Shani Davis of the U.S.

?As an Olympian and a top-level skater, you have to be prepared to be able to handle any sort of situation,? Davis said. ?I?ve learned not to pay attention to things that are negative.?

Two quick questions for those of you who follow the Winter Olympics closer than I, it's been a least two go rounds since I last watched.

Are the blue lines painted for the skiing events something instituted for these Olympics or was introduced for past Olympics?

And when did they change the way skating was judged?

I believe they're new, and they're simply guides. You can go outside them.

I'm just jumping into this thread and I have not read all the previous posts.  Just want to make a general observation.  I'm not trying to start anything or kick anyone's cat but the Olympics just don't seem to be what they were a few decades ago.  They just don't seem quite as special or big.  Almost to the point of being just another international competition.  Didn't they change the format a number of years ago where, instead of both games being held the same year and then no Olympics for another four years, we now have a games every two years, summer then two years later winter, etc?  I think they did that and with the games happening more often it just seems less of an important thing.  Then again, maybe I am just an old fucker.

no . . . "they" know that americans love to shell out money on any kind of sport from cockroach racing to midget tossing to anything involving groups of big men playing with their balls.  and then the betting on top of it plus sponsors plus television contracts is a whole other topic.  people need sports all the time to make themselves feel apart of something and to feel as if they could do the said sport because they watch so much of it.  kinda like that guy in alaska who watched and studied bears so much . . . he thought he was one.

They kept it within 2 earlier in these olympics, didn't they? And that was before the US started having every announcer verbally-fellatio them for two days. Ryan Miller was on Ryan Seacrest yesterday, for God's sake. I can totally see the US coming out fat and let-down-y.

Lets not forget Brian Rafalski is the US' leading goal scorer, for additional God's sake. They aren't exactly an offensive jugernaut. And Jonas Hiller is on the other end.

If you watch women's curling long enough, you'll begin to find them strangely attractive, like the lady who brings you food in a diner, even though you know if you saw them in a bar you wouldn't give them a second look.

For those still having trouble, here's a direct link you can plug into any approved media player (most IT places block browsers, but not media player links):

http://player.play.it/player/player.html?v=4.10.44&id=20629

Lastly, if that doesn't work it's time to wear a skimpy shirt or buy booze for your IT folks.  They're dorks with serious weaknesses....

Why should we not talk about the game? It's an Olympics discussion thread, for people to discuss the Olympics. If people aren't up-to-date, and don't want it spoiled, it seems obvious THEY should alter their thread viewing choices, not the rest of us.

i'm a huge fan of french and italian wine, but my curiosity was piqued last night while at trader joe's: TJ's has their own reserve, a 2006 californian cab.  it's pretty damn good, but IMO it's lacking 2 small things: it's a tad below full-bodied (which i would normally expect from a cab reserve), and a smidgen less than dry... some of the fruitiness has a hint of sweet.  these are 2 complaints i often have of californian heavies.  but for $10 it's an absolute steal.

As the Zamboni company is quick to point out, the Vancouver Olympics are utilizing sub-standard Canadian built ice resurfacing machines; not real Zamboni's.

Yes, I meant no disrespect. I remember the Dead Wings years and how people started to come back after Yzerman showed he was the real deal (although, again respectfully, to a lesser degree then WAS/PIT), so I can't speak negatively. But Washington's "fickle" audience seems to have a particular assumption that all things Ovechkin = all things Caps.

The tying goal was madness. So much crystal got shattered at my party; the remnants of discarded rum & coke siphoning between the cracks in our hardwood floors. Then as high as the elation was to tie it, it was that depressing to watch the NHL's poster-boy show up for the first time in the Olympics and end it. :( :( :( :( :(

i had no idea it was that bad... my buddy compiled some of the best commentary/descriptions:

Vicemag: "This closing ceremony is pretty much the Canadian equivalent of blackface."
Nestruck: "Who produced this? Max Bialystock?"

It was sort of cool how both teams got this insane "go nuts" moment -- the US with the game tying goal with :25 left and Canada with the winner -- but man, I'd feel alot happier about the outcome if someone other than He Who Piggy Backs Much More Talented Teammates To Glory or He Who Forever Leads With Elbow had scored the game winner. That kinda sucked.
kris draper did not score the game winner

Awesome line, and true. They pretty much took every Canadian stereotype and had it on display. I was waiting for giant a 40' "Eh?" on wheels at any second.

i hate the light blue. as my dad says 'just reminds you of when they were terrible'

but in dc you have to go crosby. pisses off caps fans the most
my twitter feed last night reinforced my decision

i tried to find an orpik sweater actually. no dice

seriously a perfect olympics. crosby is the hero, usa gets the silver, finns get the bronze, russia gets embarrassed and directv sponsors a commercial free third period

it's looking like the ratings for the gold medal games were huge, as one might expect.  no official numbers yet, but so far i've found this  (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/03/01/usa-vs-canada-gold-medal-hockey-huge-ratings-in-preliminary-numbers/43373)and this (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/People-watch-hockey-Gold-medal-ratings-huge-for?urn=nhl,224998).

i'm betting that most of these people (http://torontoist.com/2010/03/canadian_mens_olympic_hockey_gold_photos.php?gallery0Pic=24#gallery) watched.

confirmed.

"Sunday afternoon?s USA vs. Canada gold medal hockey game, that NBC?s Bob Costas called, ?One of the greatest sports events I have ever seen,? was the most-watched hockey game in 30 years.  Canada?s epic 3-2 overtime victory (3:20-6:13 p.m. ET) drew an average viewership of 27.6 million, the most watched hockey broadcast of any kind since the USA vs. Finland 1980 gold medal game in Lake Placid on Feb. 24, 1980 (32.8 million)."  (source) (http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/03/01/usa-vs-canada-gold-medal-hockey-most-watched-game-in-30-years-with-27-6-million/43413) (not too surprising: top metered markets = Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Detroit)

"To put the numbers in perspective, Sunday's game drew a higher overnight rating than every World Series game since 2004 (including every game of Yankees/Phillies last year), every NBA Finals telecast since 1998, and every NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four game since at least '98." (source) (http://sportsmediawatch.blogspot.com/2010/03/hockey-night-in-america-gold-medal-game.html)

"Sunday?s gold-medal Olympic men?s hockey game became the most-watched TV broadcast in Canadian history, with an average audience of 16.6 million viewers.
The peak viewership was estimated at 22 million people ? or two-thirds of Canada?s population ? who watched when Sidney Crosby scored in overtime as Canada beat the United States 3-2.
Nearly half the Canadian population watched the entire game on average, while 80 per cent of Canadians watched some part of the game (26.5 million)." (source) (http://www.vancouversun.com/entertainment/Canada+Olympic+hockey+final+gold+ratings/2628549/story.html)

What do think of Moz's analysis of the London's games? Anti-English bigoted douche or mostly spot on?
To me sounds like he thinks the UK is becoming the US. At least their royals have some history, unlike the ones we create for TV.

http://true-to-you.net/morrissey_news_120804_01 (http://true-to-you.net/morrissey_news_120804_01)

"I am unable to watch the Olympics due to the blustering jingoism that drenches the event. Has England ever been quite so foul with patriotism? The "dazzling royals" have, quite naturally, hi-jacked the Olympics for their own empirical needs, and no oppositional voice is allowed in the free press. It is lethal to witness. As London is suddenly promoted as a super-wealth brand, the England outside London shivers beneath cutbacks, tight circumstances and economic disasters. Meanwhile the British media present 24-hour coverage of the "dazzling royals", laughing as they lavishly spend, as if such coverage is certain to make British society feel fully whole. In 2012, the British public is evidently assumed to be undersized pigmies, scarcely able to formulate thought.

As I recently drove through Greece I noticed repeated graffiti seemingly everywhere on every available wall. In large blue letters it said WAKE UP WAKE UP. It could almost have been written with the British public in mind, because although the spirit of 1939 Germany now pervades throughout media-brand Britain, the 2013 grotesque inevitability of Lord and Lady Beckham (with Sir Jamie Horrible close at heel) is, believe me, a fate worse than life. WAKE UP WAKE UP."

Best factoid ever

In 1964 A group of cross-country skiers from Mongolia traveled to the Olympics, unaware of any application process. They were allowed to compete.

How is it more humiliating for the Russians?  The game at Lake Placid was some college students playing the best team in the world who had been practicing together for years.  The Russians didn't win any type of medal the past two olympics in mens hockey.  Any only one silver and no golds the last 5 olympics.  Coming into Lake Placid they had won 4 straight.  And they won the next two after the Lake Placid loss.   No one is suprised.  The Russian hockey players are all about themselves these days.

Q: You said that the analysis will come later. But what mistakes can you talk about now?
A: There were individual mistakes. That's why we couldn't affect the result even though we had twice as many chances as the opponents. We just couldn't score.
Q: What future, if any, do you see for your own work and for your coaching staff? Because, you know, your predecessor was eaten alive after the Olympics?
A: Well then, eat me alive right now?
Q: No, I mean?
A: Eat me, and I won't be here anymore.
Q: But we have the world championship coming up!
A: Well then, there will be a different coach because I won't exist any more, since you will have eaten me.
Q: But you're staying, aren't you?
A: Yes, I will remain living.

Clarification:My wife enjoys giving ME, someone she loves, blow jobs. But she wouldn't enjoy giving random men blow jobs, like some gay men seem to enjoy. Are there women who enjoy giving random men blow jobs?

Do any women really enjoy giving blowjobs?

A: Because they always choke.

and note the contradiction when Ford answers his own question - which woman enjoys giving blowjobs?  his wife.

not sure where the "random men" comes in.  julian made no mention of this.  i guess giving blowjobs to random men is something ford had on his mind?

Actually, the rule is you're not required to offer to reciprocate on your birthday, as you rightfully should for a blow job on any other day of the year.

That isn't what your wife told me.

Anyway if one night stands are any indicator most women enjoy giving blowjobs to strangers.  We at least most women I have been on one-nights stand with.   And every woman gives you a BJ by the third date and I doubt they are in love with you at that point.  You need to get out more.

I realize that losers complain about the refereeing, but in OT:

Canada blows up US player by the side of the goal - legit penalty

US player smacks at the goalie's pads on a rebound attempt - a play they allowed all game - should not have been penalized

I suppose it was a 'make-up call' that didn't need to be made

Maybe that means the boys will get a break tomorrow.  USA!

On the 2nd and 3rd Canadian goals, team USA has no one to blame but themselves.  The 2nd goal (when Canada pulled the goalie), team USA started chasing the puck and stopped playing good solid defense.  On the goal in OT while Canada was on the power play team USA played terrible defense.  Canada was passing the puck around the perimeter and collapsing in.  Team USA just allowed them to do so by continuing to back up and allow passing lanes for the Canadians.  When the goal was scored, almost all nine skaters (if not all) were below the face off dots and between them.  Team USA did nothing to step up and challenge the Canadians at the end of that power play.  Very poorly played.

WHo cares it is women's hockey?

I don't really get this whole root for your country thing.  Why should I root for US athletes over other countries athletes?  I would get if I was Norwegian and we were all the same race and we were a tiny country fighting against huge countries.  But I have more genes in common with the Austrian, Swiss, German, Norweigan, and Swiss teams than I would have with the US athletes in general.

If the US ends up facing the Swedes in the Hockey final I will root for the Swedes.  Niklas Backstrom deserves a gold.

I made comments as to rooting for any given team.  I merely explained the shortcomings of the USA team that lead to the 2nd and 3rd goals.  As for who cares, I would image at least those who have been discussing the game care.  I could not care less for whom you choose to root just as I could not care less if you choose to smoke, drink, use drugs, or with whom you choose to have a sexual relationship.

i caught pretty much the whole thing from one of the many intensive care units i was shuffled around

i have to say i found the olympics rather boring this time around.... and we all knew russia would have to win..

i know it bothers nobody but with rare flashes the "olympic spirit" is long dead...some korean dudde decides to turn russsian and gives themtwo golds... not much "olympic spirit" in that

the most annoying thing was that commercial about an amerian car that seemed to try to turn it into a posisitive that peoplein the USget no vacation and work nonstop...

The president of George Washington University in D.C. has reversed his earlier decision to remove campus posters protesting the Beijing Olympics, which Chinese student groups had said "incited racial hatred and ethnic tensions."

Details: In early February, posters protesting the Beijing Olympics were posted in several locations on the George Washington University campus, according to a student group statement and photos posted to Twitter.

The posters show athletes wearing uniforms bearing the Chinese flag pointing a rifle at a bound and gagged Uyghur; pinning down a Tibetan; skating over a Hong Kong flag; riding atop a surveillance camera doubling as a snowboard; and pushing a virus across the ice.
The identity of the person who put the posters around GWU's campus isn't known.
Chinese Australian artist and political cartoonist Badiucao created the posters before the Olympics began and made them available for free download online.
"My art is always targeting the Chinese Communist Party, never the Chinese suffering from this regime," Badiucao, who lives in Australia, told Axios.

Not looking like any time soon.
We sure make a lot of exceptions for them… sure overlook a lot…then when Iran or Cuba does anything we freak out.
