Title: The Low Ticket Warning thread
Post by: sweetcell on August 18, 2011, 03:40:00 pm
on its FB page (http://www.facebook.com/930club), the club announces when a show is close to selling out.  i think that is a really valuable service.  however, not everyone is on FB and the announcements are quickly buried amidst a hundred posts about "TEH KAIZER CHEIFS!!!1" and announcements of every single 930/IMP/MPP event.

so here's a thread where the warnings can be re-posted if you happen to come across one.  ideally whoever posts the warnings on the club's FB page can also copy the warning to this thread (thanks!).

first warning: The Hold Steady is about to sell out.  only 2 tickets left a few minutes ago.

I feel compelled to reveal the big secret.  "Sweetcell" is an anagram of "Seth Hurwitz."  Did you ever read/see "Fight Club?"

i tried putting 3 tickets in my cart, "quntity not available".  tried putting in 2, bingo.  i was bored.

They tweet the warnings, too.

yup, but again they're mixed in with replies to fans, new show announcements, contests, etc... my idea here is to create a single place to look instead of having to go through a haystack.

I can't believe that Smashing Pumpkins show sold out so fast.  I mean, I kinda knew it would but... really?  And I'm a huge SP fan from Gish - Siamese Dream and i just couldn't get excited about it.  I know i'd get to the show and just be bummed that i was watching a fake lineup.  lame!

No, there is quite a bit wrong with it.  The new band has no chemistry, and Corgan's new songs, which he will play lots of, are largely terrible.  And the Pumpkins were not just Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin were a huge part of whey they were so great live.

I have to agree.  I saw them several times before the break and then drove to Asheville to see their first US show when they came back.  It was amazing.  Then saw about three more since then.. awful.  I don't know what changed, but the new music is so uninspired and boring, and that's all they play live anymore.  All three times, he completely abandoned the old stuff for pompous 9-piece renditions of songs that sucked to begin with.  Even the anniversary shows which were advertised as a celebration of the past.. he just ended up fellating himself on stage for an hour and a half with the most pretentious unimaginative stuff i've likely ever seen on a stage; hardly playing the stuff that made his fanbase so passionate to begin with.

These new pumpkins are an abomination, but I see how it's still selling out.  I know it's going to suck and be a disappointment, but that didn't stop me from getting on the computer just now with the intent of getting a ticket.  Maybe it will be awesome, I grew up with the pumpkins, and was willing to give them like a 4th shot.

Seriously, it's like an abusive relationship, all your friends are telling you to leave, but you just can't.  That's why it sold out, and i'm glad it did.. saved me 60 bucks.

Pretty much, way to sum it up. Billy's a bitch. As a Pearl Jam fan, I hate when people pine for all the radio singles at shows at claim that the band blew its wad after Vitalogy, but at least Pearl Jam has some sense of integrity. I'd just feel slimy giving Billy any of my money.

Bring back the band and start playing their best music (everything up to and including Mellon Collie) or don't. Just stop trying to pass off your modern day bullshit as the Pumpkins, Billy.

Then go fuck yourself.

Depends on the show, how close the show is, how tickets have been selling and other factors. Could mean as low as a handful and as many as 100 or more.

25 tickets or less would be super super low ticket warning... that would be like 2% of tickets..

its great if the warnings can be issued at 100 tickets or even more...

who cares if it's 25 or 100?  either way, you need to get off your ass and purchase if you want to go to the show ;D

personally i'm grateful for any warnings.  it's not like Shadrach's main job is to watch ticket numbers like a hawk and spring in to action with a warning cry as soon as the tickets fall below a certain threshold.  he's already mentioned it's just something he (or someone else?) does when they happen to notice that tickets are low.

Wombats was a very fun show. Don't be judgy....

hi!  welcome to the 930.com forum!  passing judgement on others perceived inferior music tastes is what we do here.  it makes folks feel better about the super-duper-non-mainstream drivel they claim to love.

super catchy 3 piece band from Liverpool who got quite big with their song 'lets dance to joy division'. 'Moving to New York' was also quite popular (both off their first album about 3years ago). Played NYC a bajillion times and got a lot of hype. Somehow theyre even bigger now although I thought they kinda fell off the planet for awhile.

their live show is tons of fun if you just want to dance and have a good time. murph is an engaging frontman.

and yes, im sure you didnt want to know any of that, but might be of use for someone else.

Who the hell are the Wombats and how could they possibly be close to selling out? Are people that desperate for something to do?

need to get laid?

you offering? ;D

nah, it's just that i'm fed up with the self-centered delusional snobbery that seems to be on the rise recently.  we need to stop this navel-gazing before people get sucked into themselves and create black holes.

in this case, he doesn't even know who the wombats are yet he's hating on people for wanting to go to their show.  is the hate really needed?  not to pick on ford, that's just one example.  seems to be more of that going on around here lately.  i guess i'm at fault to for perpetuating the vibe...

i do find it interesting that hating on other's tastes gets a pass around here, whereas my hating on the hating gets called out.

I would like to add that although I do know who the Wombats are I do find myself surprised (not angry) when an act I've never heard of comes to town and sells out the club.

Unfortunately I think it says more about me than the act or their fans, though.

indeed.  that's rather self-aware of you... i like.

when an unknown band sells out the club, my first thought is "maybe i should check them out".  hit rate is pretty low (hence the maybe), but i'll still give some of them a few minutes on spotify/last.fm/myspace/etc.  ya never know what you'll discover.

your post made me think of a possible explanation for the anger: "i'm a music guy, and i'm into good music, therefore any band that i haven't heard of must automatically be bad music.  how dare they sell out a club!" ;D

Moving fast may well have been inaccurate too.  As of now there are actually 500+ tickets remaining for Lamb of God.  I suppose it all depends on your definition of "moving quickly."

It matters very little to me, as I'm not in town that night, and wouldn't be going anyway.  I've just been curious to keep an eye on what the threshold is when they put out one of their warnings.

That's almost 200 less than Lamb of God.  So, I guess we should have a low ticket warning for March 9th.

what does having a hit . . . have anything to do with a good band or whether they have fans.  you must be a fan of sugar tart pop where status and chart position make the artist.

If only there was a designated subforum on here where an actual club employee would answer these types of queries for us instead of us just speculating. If only.

Rarely is being generous. A quick word search of the thread shows not one single post by Eddie in here ever.

Chameleons Vox is down to 30 tickets.  This will supposedly be the last tour for this.  This will be your last chance to hear all of the excellent Script of the Bridge live.

It also features post-punk badasses, Pleasure Leftists, opening (a rare show, they do not come out here that often).

I had a dream that I went to the JAMC Psychocandy show and I was the only one there and I was a little sad for JAMC but then I enjoyed them playing my all-time favorite album just for me.

This was a daydream but it wasn't like I was lying in a field of wheat and smiling at clouds so "daydream" sounds weird, and "fantasy" sounds like I was dong-handed, so I don't know what to call what I had even though I may have been dong-handed at the moment but in a totally unrelated context.

You'd think lawn seats would be on the rise in popularity at MPP since you don't have the risk of a roof falling on you and crushing you to death.

I think the 'fun' factor is the big sell here. I had no interest in this show, but if somebody had said, hey a group of us are going, you want to go too? I totally would've. I love the idea of these guys sitting around and deciding, dudes we should take this shit out on tour and just have a 2 month party while we rage hard, play shows and make some money.

It always remains appalling to me how the majority on this board can envision themselves as such enlightened arbiters of music but really remain so small-minded and bigoted. You'll all prattle on for ten hours about the Ryan Adamses and Joanna Newsoms of the world while completely ignoring their spouses who have sold more records than them by a significant multiple. And then you'll go into the voting booth and call yourself a progressive. Sure.

of that lot, i've only ever heard of Yungblud because he did a DCFC cover with Halsey, and the video of that popped up in some social media feed of mine.  apparently they're dating too, learned that as i googled the link for the death cab cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAYBCJGk07s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAYBCJGk07s)

Don’t be ridiculous. Julian’s America has traditionally been about yachting and Burberry and champagne saberage and walk-in humidors. It’s as old money as it comes. There’s nothing young blood about it.

I had Cheerios this morning and still have cereal four mornings a week. I am greatly criticized for this.

What do you eat for breakfast? I'm in my car within 15-25 mins of getting out of bed, so cereal is just the fastest breakfast.

Amongst her repertoire- “I Wish I Was Stephen Malkmus”.  Can’t be all bad.

Nothing has ever said "I am a middle aged white guy" better than your sentence.

They both sing songs about hair. Lyrically, i'd say they're pretty even-Stephen.

Lyrics
Think I'm starting to change
With the weeks and the days
Got this new blue-haired phase
I think I kinda like it
Think I kinda like it
Yeah
Think I kinda like it
'Cause I get tired of the same shit
Got new hair, a new phase
I'm from outer space
And I'm pretty sure I'll get used to it
Guess I'm tryna get by
'Cause like the weather, I change with time
And I sit at home, cry to Pavement
I wish I was Stephen Malkmus
I wanted change, no one forced it
My hair is blue, it's pretty obvious
That I kinda like it
Think I kinda like it
Yeah
Think I kinda like it
'Cause I get tired of the same shit
Got new hair, a new phase
I'm from outer space
And I'm pretty sure I'll get used to it
Now I've changed, I've been feeling comfy
But now I've changed, I've been feeling lonely
'Cause your photos suck, your brand is shit
You're up your butt
You never really ask me how I am, ask me how I am
'Cause I sit at home, cry to Pavement
I wish I was Stephen Malkmus
I wanted change, no one forced it
My hair is blue, it's pretty obvious
That I kinda like it
Think I kinda like it
Nice
Think I kinda like it
'Cause I get tired of the same shit
Got new hair, a new phase
I'm from outer space
And I'm pretty sure I'll get used to it
Fuck
