I'll throw a Subaru Forrester in the mix as well, GGW seems like a Subaru guy.

I am not a fan of the crossover SUV genre in general. In general, I would get a station wagon before a mini SUV. I do like Subaru, but I would get an Outback before a Forester. I would get a Touareg instead of a Tiguan.
Or you can go all in on the suburban douche factor like me and get a Range Rover (a proper Range Rover - not that dumbed-down Sport version).

I have driven a Mercedes wagon - my in-laws have one - and it's a really nice car. But it's a wagon, ferchrissakes.
Own an SUV that currently has 190k miles on it. Am in the process of driving it into the ground and once that happens I will be done with SUVs forever. Just glad I don't have to drive it everyday.

We're very happy with our RAV4. Or I should say my work at home wife is. I'm the one who drives every day, and i get to drive the 16 year old Saturn.

95 SL2 with 145K. AC is broken, heat not great, ceiling falling in, back windows won't roll down, radio volume dial busted, leaks wiper fluid, the list goes on. But very reliable for short trip driving.

That's pretty good.
A/C in mine just died (the compressor clutch went first). One rear window won't go down and that's an easy fix but I won't bother with that. Radio is fine but all four speakers are shot. Sunroof still works great.
The worst of it is that the rings are leaking oil and that that's way too much of a job for me and too much $$ to take to the shop for this car. So this one's being driven onto the ground, too.

Get a RAV4 or CRV, that's my vote.
I'm in the market too, but for something used. Was looking hard at CRV but in the end it's not big enough for what we need.

RAV4 is too long (181.9), CRV (179.3) is just butting up against our length limit.

You should point out to Saxette that getting a crossover SUV is not a compromise, it's a stunning loss for her. It is no way an SUV. They are basically built on car platforms. There are a lot of great station wagons out there with as much space as a mini-SUV.

I live in the Capitol Hill Historic District with a tiny-ass garage apparently built to house a small horse.
It's easier to get a car seat in and out of an SUV (compact or not) as compared to a wagon/hatchback. This seems to override every other argument in favor of the wagon. Oh well.
The Sportage SX (http://www.automobilemag.com/reviews/driven/1103_2011_kia_sportage_sx_drive/viewall.html) looks solid and somewhat fun to drive.

Carry the child in a sling and you won't have the problem of carseat removal. We never once removed the carseat. Plus, carrying a baby in a carseat just looks douchey. And the sling allows for more bonding than carrying a kid in a carseat or stroller.
I mean seriously, don't let that be a criteria for car selection!

Don't get a VW. Unless you like dropping $500 - $1000 every time you take it in for simple maintenance/oil changes. Shit on those cars wears out faster than anything and parts are expensive. Nice cars, but horrible horrible moneypits.
I know because I've owned two. The fact that I did not learn my lesson after VW #1 makes me the stupidest person in this thread.

Most ladies & gents I know don't take out the car seat ever. Unless you are traveling and don't have a spare. They use a stroller or sling. Imagine back / hip / wrist pain too.

i took it out quite a bit when they were really little and in one of those car seats that snaps right into the stroller.

Consumer Reports seems to rate most VWs very good to excellent on Owner Satisfaction (although middling on reliability)...but you hear a pretty loud chorus like the one in this forum on costs/maintenance. Wonder what the disconnect is...

They are NICE cars and for the sticker price you get a lot. Just very expensive to own.

Coincidentally I am in the market for new (to me) car. My family and our two dogs can not all go someplace together without taking two cars. The corolla and civic are not cutting it anymore. Plus I need something that can tow a trailer.

my honda will die at some point . . . so close to 200000. is honda still the company of choice for reliability and lasting length? i remember at one point toyota was ruling, then ford came on strong. i want another honda if possible, or a truck if choosing something outside honda.

After driving them both, there wasn't even a decision to make. The A3 TDI won hands down and is now in my garage. It's been two weeks and with the price of unleaded catching diesel and probably soon to surpass it, I'm feeling strong about the decision.

I'll stick with my Accords. I am bout to go buy another one, most likely a three year old model. I currently drive a 96 accord that I bought in 99. Still going strong, long since paid for, and very dependable. Just time for an additional vehicle. (Currently 237k miles)

I had to let my little green civic go last year when the transmission went after 250,000K. Was hoping to make it to 300,000. I bought an Acura TSX. I love it. It was between that an a Volvo C30. They wouldn't deal on the C30 at all, and that pissed me off, plus I got a really nice deal on the TSX.

Just got a Forester. Ultimately came down to that and the Tiguan, and the Forester was just a ton more practical.

So I said, uhhhhh, show me the second cheapest car on the lot. It was a 12 year old Honda Civic with a manual transmission at 42K miles on it, for $10K. It's now up to 75K and it keeps on going.

Is the damage to your car, their car, or both?
I did this very thing years ago. The owners were *in* the other car. I was not drunk, just stupidly careless. The happy karmic ending was that all of the damage was on my car. So the guy didn't punch me out or anything. Still haven't gotten it fixed (completely cosmetic), despite numerous offers from complete strangers to hammer it out for a fee.

someone sideswiped my car in front of my house and actually left the insurance info
got the sideview mirror and some damage to front bumper...called their insurance and they sent me a $500
I replaced the sideview mirror for $75 and pocketed the rest

Someone sideswiped me in front of my house, left no such note and did >$4K worth of damage. Car was in the shop for over a month due to the difficulty getting parts. Huge PITA, but at least I got to drive an upgraded loaner...much nicer than my car!
All the damage was covered by Maryland's Uninsured Motorists Fund...so it didn't hit my policy
