Title: The Nationals and Orioles are both in first place

...just had to say it and jinx them. Both will probably lose Sunday and drop out of first.

If they win hopefully you'll drop out of this board.

The same day as the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking. Surely not a coincidence.

The Nats are for real. Screw this second Wild Card bullshit, they're gonna win the division.

I'm a big Orioles fan, and I love looking at the standings right now

but, unfortunately, from experience, I fear this will be like the opening Fillmore schedule

and then...

Yep.

The Angels are in last place and the Dodgers are in first, and I'm not the slightest bit worried.

That Nats starting rotation is legit, though.  A lot of questions on offense, but many parts to make a deal by midseason if they're still around.  The playoffs are a definite possibility.

The O's have no chance.  Zero.

I think the Nationals have a great team this year.

And I'm jealous.

Because I am an Orioles fan.

I do love these first few weeks though when the Orioles remember they play baseball.

Didn't the O's start like 4-0 last season and everyone in Bmore shit their pants? We'll see where they are in another month.

Because I am an Orioles fan.

Me, too.

The Nats have made the most of their draft picks and are now seen as a good place to play as they are a team on the rise.

The O's have squandered their picks for over a decade now and it's clear that just about nobody wants to play for a team that isn't going anywhere anytime soon.  Sad.

It's a 15-20 year rebuilding process.  Just be patient.

After all, Angelos can't live forever.  Or can he?

I'm a Phillies fan so I've never been concerned about the Nats; until this year. They have a good rotation and better bats (at the moment) than the Phillies. If Harper pans out as planned and Utley/Howard don't return at 100% I'm thinking a 6th NL East Title is out of reach. I'm kind of worried about the Marlins (hitting combo of Reyes/Ramirez) too. I'll just keep telling myself that the first 10 games are not representative of an entire season.

I just wish the O's would stay in it

they take an un-recoverable nosedive at some point every year

then they play well and...if only it weren't for that nosedive

and why is it that they are so stubborn about admitting that you simply can't use Kevin Gregg?

I just love baseball.  Of course I would freak out if we make the playoffs again, but I'm just so excited baseball is back.

Don't forget that in their first year in DC the Nats were in first place a the midway point of the season.

This is a much better team, but just sayin'.

I'd have to presume he's got a short shelf life at this point, unless he turns it around quickly.  Matusz, as well.

for the Nats it makes a difference to have a good coach who commands respect! Manny Acta and Riggleman were zeros... Davey Johnson knows his stuff and everyone knows it... Angelos accepting his resignation the very day he won AL Manager of the Year honors remains one of the more incredibly stupid things he has done...and he has done many stupid things.. unless I'm wrong that was the last time the O's made the playoffs.. 1997.

However, I'm skeptical the Nats will have enough firepower to compete...I'm sure at some point Rizzo will need to get the OK from the Lerners to make a move and they're so stingy I'll be pleasantly surprised if they sign off on it.

I wouldn't say stingy (see Werth signing, two #1 draft picks signed, Gio, Zimmerman, etc), I would say they are practical and know what they have, and don't need to sacrifice the long-term for the short-term success they are seeing now.

But I too am skeptical they have enough firepower to compete.  Still early, but if the offense gets a little bit better and the pitching gets a little bit worse (can't get much better at this point), they are still in a good position.

I was thinking April 2008 when the Caps beat the Panthers so make the playoffs AND clinch the division on the final day of the regular season.  Nothing since has seemed quite as sweet.

EDIT - except maybe Sergei Federov's game 7 goal agains the Rangers in round 1 in 2009.

To me though this tops it.

In all honesty I felt prior to the game they were much better off being on the road. If they were at VC for Game 7, I would have liked their odds a lot less as the entire crowd's assholes would have been puckered tight the entire game, waiting and groaning for the worst to happen.

Yeah, chalk that up to divine intervention and all three officials on the court having their heads shoved up their asses at the most opportune time. Notice how your shit team hasn't done jack fucking shit since.

i don't have the stats in front of me, and i'm too lazy to google 'em, but road teams have won something like 2/3 or game 7's.  so statistically, last night's result was expected.  not that i didn't think that the Caps would be in that 1/3 ;D

In the beginning, there was Jack, and Jack had a groove.
And from this groove came the groove of all grooves.
And while one day viciously throwing down on his box, Jack boldy declared,
"Let there be HOUSE!"
and house music was born.
"I am, you see,
I am
the creator, and this is my house!
And, in my house there is ONLY house music.
But, I am not so selfish because once you enter my house it then becomes OUR house and OUR house music!"
And, you see, no one man owns house because house music is a universal language, spoken and understood by all.
You see, house is a feeling that no one can understand really unless you're deep into the vibe of house.
House is an uncontrollable desire to jack your body.
And, as I told you before, this is our house and our house music.
And in every house, you understand, there is a keeper.
And, in this house, the keeper is Jack.
Now some of you who might wonder,
"Who is Jack, and what is it that Jack does?"
Jack is the one who gives you the power to jack your body!
Jack is the one who gives you the power to do the snake.
Jack is the one who gives you the key to the wiggly worm.
Jack is the one who learns you how to walk your body.
Jack is the one that can bring nations and nations of all Jackers together under one house.
You may be black, you may be white; you may be Jew or Gentile. It don't make a difference in OUR House.
And this is fresh.

(you've just been jacked... old school)

Orioles, best record in baseball.
Nats, trying to tie them.
L.A. Pujols, still in last.
Cards, sans Pujols, first place.
All is right in the baseball world!

Yup.  Now we are really going to see what this team is made of.

Rizzo's comments on Hamels' intentional beaming of Harper:  Hilarious.

"?He thinks he?s sending a message to us of being a tough guy. He?s sending the polar opposite message. He says he?s being honest; well, I?m being honest. It was a gutless chicken shit fucking act. That was a fake-tough act. No one has ever accused Cole Hamels of being old school.?

It turns out the batter doesn't make the balls and strike calls, so why plunk the batter?  I'm all for hitting people.  I've been thrown out of more baseball games than I can remember (and have a couple of great stories about that too that I will share someday), but I too was perplexed that Harper was plunked because the umpires were upsetting the Phils.  All that has to happen is for the catcher to act like he's crossed up on a fastball and let a slider hit the ump on the top of the foot - that's how you complain about balls and strikes.  Not hitting the batter.  But Cole took his like a man too in the third so fine.

One thing I will agree with though is that Bryce Harper loves to play baseball.  And I like to watch him love to play baseball.

And Rhett - I'm not ignoring your posts.  I'm simply making a list...

I'm reminded of a time back in 1995, I think it was.  Garret Anderson's rookie season and he's tearing it up - hitting close to .350 at the time, probably had a hitting streak of some sort going on, if I remember correctly.  My old man and I are at the game...

Roger Clemens was on the mound and throws the first pitch over Garret's shoulder, buzzed right past his helmet to the back stop.  Clemens was never going to hit Garret and really just wanted to get his attention.  It was just enough to get the rookie off his game and out of his comfort zone and he struck out that at bat.  Garret ended up going 0-4 that night and never looked comfortable at the plate.

That's how you welcomed rookies to the big leagues, and Roger Clemens is one of the last persons I'd ever say a nice word about.

EDIT:  Here you go.  Boxscore (http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/CAL/CAL199508170.shtml).  Looks like it was the second at bat and not the first that Clemens threw over Garret's head.  That makes sense because Garret ripped a shot his first at bat.  And, yes, my head is filled with this much useless information.

Rizzo was defending his player publicly. Both him and Harper know rooks have been getting plunked since the beginning of time. That said, he took advantage of the opportunity to crack on a hand model wannabe like Cole Hamels whose career peaked his rookie year. Hopefully Hamels will lose a few teeth in an inadvertent collision going up the first base line.

Shit, I said we'd find out what the Nats were really made of when we lost Werth for 3 months.  And now Ramos gone for a year?

I'm thinking a torn ACL on a catcher, one of his considerable size, could be career threatening.

Harper homered for the 2nd day in a row today.  In a bad loss though.

Maybe you want to call Harper an "idiot" to his face?  Nah, I guess its easier to rip a 19 year old rookie playing his first games in the majors on an internet board.

Arod's sluggging % through his first 17 games (54 at bats) when he came up was .241 and his batting average was .204.

I thought it was happening all over again on Sunday, but it was glorious to see them bounce back from back to back losses with 9 runs. 4 homers I think? Wish I had gone Sunday. Still tons of fun!

2. I hadn't even thought of it being "O" as in "Orioles" until I was at the game and thought "Is that for the O's?" then I thought "Fuck that, fuck the O's". But I have heard it for years and years at sporting events and other events where they sing the National Anthem before hand.

Been to about 50 Nats games and its usually a very small amount of people yelling during the National Anthem. I'm pretty sure if you surveyed people at the games an overwhelming percentage would prefer people not yell during the anthem.

Its not that hard people: take off your hat and sing along or remain quiet during the National Anthem.

Now let's get back to more exciting discussions, like how the Orioles beat the Red Sox last night.

I don't think men are "required" to take their hat off either.

But if you're a TRUE AMERICAN, godddamnit you take off your fucking hat during the national anthem!

I'm sorry you do not understand.

K8tee is right.  Only the guys are asked to do that.  Why?  No idea.  Makes no sense to me at all.  But, then again, playing the national anthem before sporting events doesn't makes sense to me, either.

And I don't find that punctuating the O or RED part of it offensive.  But I guess people gotta bitch.

The reactions I've seen towards guys who "forget" leads me to believe that it is.

Yelling during the anthem or not taking your hat off are simply signs of a lack of education.

If the Orioles want to argue that their "tradition" supersedes the nation's tradition of respect for the National Anthem then that is their prerogative but I'm not really buying it. It seems like boorish behavior to me.

Why am I not surprise that the participants of this board have no understanding the history of etiquette?

On ladies: the reason behind the difference in rules between men and women in regards to hat etiquette is due to the fact that, traditionally, women wore hats that often would be elaborately pinned into their hair; they also may contain flowers, bows, ribbons, and other decorations that would be difficult to remove and put back in. Thus, if a woman is simply wearing a baseball cap that is easily removed and put back on, they cannot claim the ?ladies exemption?.

The ladies rule also stems from church rules, stemming from covering up flesh in church, but that's a longer discussion.

And the men's hat off rule has more to do with the flag than with the anthem. Your supposed to take your hat off when addressing/facing the flag, regardless of whether or not the anthem is playing. Congress later amended the rule to include the anthem.

Ha, I don't know if it's a lack of education or not, but it's amazingly irritating, that's for sure.

Also, whether it's a tradition or not, and aside from it being disrespectful, it's akin to going to a concert and being those people who stand right next to you and talk loudly about their jobs (or whatever) during the really quite intimate acoustic part of your favorite song (not that the national anthem is my favorite song).  Seriously, shut the fuck up and act like you've been to a sporting event (concert) before.

But shit, what do I know, maybe when Francis Scott Key was hanging out in Baltimore watching Fort McHenry get shelled, writing the song, some jackass yelled "oh" when he composed that part and for some reason he decided to keep it and we're actually all wrong about it.  I doubt it though.

Well, it IS a drinking song.

Sorry everyone seems to be so offended by it, but I am not going to stop emphasizing one syllable of a song.  I've been saying it since I was little.

and if you don't like it, feel free to be pissed off at it.

Orioles have lost three of last four. Have to wonder if it's the start of the June swoon.

This would be glorious.

Really wished we could have handed Hamels a loss last night. Glad to see Henry Rodriguez make it through one inning even though he had a couple rough pitches in there. Insanely surprised Davey decided to throw him back in there again.
