Admit it that it's because your envious of the guests that have been added to the LA show for this tour... I'll admit I'm a little green.

But is terms of bands who are missing key members, I'd much rather see replacements consisting of musicians I admire who were influenced by that band.  Then say Dave Wakeling's English Beat which consists of whatever studio musician he can pull together to tour with, heck last time I saw that group there wasn't even a sax player in the group.

First I though you were talking about the band the replacements, but then realized you had a more salient point and I totally agree.  I kinda like the idea of this and hope it catches on
Honestly I think Mick/Paul/Topper should do something like this

the guest stars on that LA show are insane,
dc nabed a few choice ones, but doesn't even hold a candle to that firepower

so hutch,
are you going to go?
I still remember you had that paper ticket to go see big star in nashville in like 96
do you still have that?

oh I'm not going to this.. I think its a bit of a sham but hope everyone who goes enjoys it.

I do not have that paper ticket..not even that..what a fiasco.... the story is i was visiting my sister in college in memphis and saw big star would be playing on beale street (with the dudes from the posies) and bought a ticket "oh yah i'll come back!"  ...never made it...still bummed i never saw chilton...i can't recall him touring that much or me having any real opportunities around dc but i must have missed him

and the comparison to dave wakeling is so misguided its hard to believe..

you'd rather see the drummer who as far as i know didn't sing or write any songs in what was really early on a two man band bell/chilton and then for 3rd pretty much a chilton solo album.... than see wakeling who wrote or co-wrote a ton of english beat songs and sang them?

that makes no sense to me...how does it make sense to you? :)

this big star thing is a tribute show.... its worse than going to see credence clearwater revisited which is about bottom of the barrel in my book..sorry

listening to the Gene Ween/FREEMAN record..

got to say its a snoozer.. maybe if I was stoned I'd get it or something...

I'm curious to see how these songs play live... i mean its not all bad but it definitely does not ROCK at any point.... the faster songs are so saccharine...

my favorite is the last song which is this little snippet looped over and over again... the song that most harkens back to the Ween spirit... wait..maybe thats too harsh.. i mean there is a bit of arab feel to a song or two which is something ween used to do... and off course the stallion one which i think kind of blows..

and the first song... where he tells me  to fuck off... man that seems harsh..just cause I enjoyed going to see Ween shows...

agreed...
but some of them are growing on me
I really think the covert discretion was very cathartic for him.  honestly I 'know' he loves the fans, but at the same time the love back from the fans almost killed him.  I like that some of the songs are very intimate and real.  not some silly prog rock song or nonsense about a battleship that uses turds for ammunition

with that said...it is not blowing me away and if someone else I'd never heard of put it out I might dismiss it quickly.
I really like 'for awhile I couldn't play my guitar like a man' and I do like 'I Know A Girl' (the last song)
So 3 out of 12 is not a great record by any means

but I've seen some of the live stuff online and it looks pretty good

also this girl did an awesome Freeman Medly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVhbMsun5kw) that will make you appreciate the musicality that Aaron still posses

Saw this on the ween forum....
He played a lot of ween songs last night.
 Mts and Buffalo
 Transitions
 Demon Sweat
 your party
 Freedom
 King Billy
 Grobe

 Buckingham Green

I've been listening to Stay Forever a lot lately...man is that a good song
I really hope he breaks that one out

I think there's a lot of reasons one might consider the Nobel Prize for Literature a joke at this point: this year's less than illustrious winner, their clear desire to hand it out to countries that haven't won it before, their refusal to give it to an American author, the disproportionate number of Swedish winners, etc. I was wondering which prompted you to post that as its an interesting discussion. I was not being snarky.

ok...this year's winner was what prompted me... a guy who has sold 2500 copies in the US of his best known work? a guy who has been writing for I think over 40 years??? also they are so political about it..seems like what they really liked is that he wrote a lot about the Nazi occupation of France?

It reminds me of the book 2666...what if the fictional Archimboldi had gotten the Nobel Prize for Literature in the 1980s? That is almost what they're doing (Ok I exagerate).... I dont' think it should all be about the "influence" of a writer..but you'd think to win the prize he'd have to at least have been read in a few countries outside his home country? why do they insist on going for such obscure writers? Some board member said once that Salman Rushdie woulnd't get it cause he was "too well known"? Come on now... sometimes good writers manage to sell books...

obviously what ticks me off the most is they didn't give it to Borges because of his political views (which I disagree with myself).....

but I was just thinking that for the past few years they particularly seem to not have a clue... but maybe it has always been that way

I thought Alice Munro winning last year was a brief reprieve from insanity but I generally agree with you. I feel like the Man Booker Prize (and accompanying shortlist) is a better literary benchmark than the Nobel at this point.

Nobel ...people want to know about the Peace Prize...not literature
Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and econ...those one's carry a lot of weight in their fields

But I think the literature one should be dropped

Do you look at the nominee's particular work/book or collection of works during the nominee?s lifetime?
The prize is always based on an overall assessment. It's a life's work that is rewarded, not individual books.

the words of the will of Alfred Nobel, produced "in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction" (original Swedish: den som inom litteraturen har producerat det mest framstående verket i en idealisk riktning).
Nobel's choice of emphasis on idealism in his criteria for the Nobel Prize in Literature has led to recurrent controversy. In the original Swedish, the word idealisk translates as either "idealistic" or "ideal".[2] In the early twentieth century, the Nobel Committee interpreted the intent of the will strictly. For this reason, they did not award certain world-renowned authors of the time such as James Joyce, Leo Tolstoy, Anton Chekhov, Marcel Proust, Henrik Ibsen, and Henry James.[4] More recently, the wording has been more liberally interpreted. Thus, the prize is now awarded both for lasting literary merit and for evidence of consistent idealism on some significant level. In recent years, this means a kind of idealism championing human rights on a broad scale. Hence the award is now arguably more politi

You should be hitting garage sales and craigslist to try and find punk records on the cheap. Just in the last month I found a dutch copy of "Damaged" for a buck at an estate sale. Then went to a garage sale and found three hardcore 45s: "Positively D.O.A.", J.F.A.'s "Blatant Localism EP" and some local band called Initial Reaction's EP. All a buck each. This area is rich with the stuff.

not really i'm afraid..its hard to find much coverage.... there is a facebook group called "the latin alternative" that does about as much as anyone I've seen..

Ernesto Lechner does freelance national reviews i tend to like....

one of the problems is Spanish music is so fragmented...so many kinds of music fall under the name

as far as Spanish music in DC there is a company called KESTA DC who are the big dogs..they even have a free monthly newspaper...

there is also a guy who is really involved in the DC scene and even DJ's as "DJ ROCKACTIVO"...his name is Luis Ayala... he's probably the dude that knows the most...

but it really depends on what you're looking for...

woke up to the great news that a Grant Green live concert has been unearthed...Grant Green is my favorite guitarist and there has never been any video of him playing other than one single song done in a trio format with two other guitarists (hardly representative)...

Europeans treated jazz with a little more respect which is why so many of the performances we see of the legends are from tours in Europe....

opens up with a James Brown number..does some Miles Davis...some Jobim... a very nice selection showing how varied Green could be...only took 45 years for this to come out... gives one hope something might be found for Hank Mobley...

This is an interesting thread.  I had posted a request for Sleater-Kinney tickets about 3 1/2 months ago.  I've gotten a couple of obnoxious replies from one "Hutch", but that's no big deal.  The really weird thing is that my rather uninteresting post has gotten 1245 views, with a couple of replies from this "Hutch" persona.  That is a lot of views for such a dull post, and far more views than other posts on the ticket exchange.  Is "Hutch" an actual human being that other people have met and spoken with?  "Hutch" appears to be more like a cyber-stalker, or perhaps a message board virus that is to be avoided at all costs.

Anyone reading this knows that I rarely post on the 9:30 forums, and only when I have something quite specific to say or to ask.  Are the 9:30 forums safe to post on, or is there a "Hutch" virus that puts my PC at risk of infection?

well they have played a lot here...but i had it on my radar...the leader, santaolalla (sic) won the Oscar for the soundtrack/score to brokeback mountain... he's lived in Mexico for decades...fled the Argentine military in the 70s...

definitely an interesting project ....they've sort of backed away from the tango..used to be called bajofondo tango club i think

well that is interesting reading...

I went through a phase about a decade ago where I really got into the Great American Songbook but I burnt out on it.. so I'm not too interested in these last few Dylan records.. my loss.

A tribute band is a music group that specifically plays the music of a well-known music act.

But the bands are still around! Just go see Los Auténticos Decadentes when they come around....does not even cost much more...the guys who promote these Latin rock tribute shows are crooks...they even use pictures of the real acts to promote the show

Turned up going to a local venue the other night to hang out with some friends and a cover band was playing. They ran through several Stone Temple Pilots songs, sounded reasonably like STP, no big deal, its background noise. Then all of a sudden, after like 50 minutes, the singer goes, "OK, we're going to take a break and do our second set". Now, I am only half paying attention to this while sitting at a booth and shooting the shit with these folks but I'm thinking "really? You've got a second set of STP songs queued up? OK, you guys really like some STP."

Five minutes later, same band comes back out only now the singer is shirtless. They jump into a set of Pearl Jam covers. Apparently they're called Pilot of Pearls or something and are a 50/50 STP/PJ cover band.

I still have so many questions: is this a subtle commentary on how STP was just a Pearl Jam rip off? Why shirtless for Pearl Jam? Did Eddie Vedder have a topless phase I missed? In the world of tribute bands, are you being disrespectful by covering two bands? Are these guys less of "true fans" than the dudes who solely exist in tribute to one of, but not both, Pearl Jam or Stone Temple Pilots?

Also, apropos of nothing, the singer looked eerily like Jason Mantzoukas if you know who that is. So just imagine a shirtless Jason Mantzoukas doing Pearl Jam covers and wondering if the entire thing was some real ironic hipster criticism of grunge. I'll just never know. I'll just never know.

What is he in? I've never seen him in anything other than The League. I mostly know him from the How Did This Get Made podcast and he never plugs anything at the end.

Best guess on why Hutch is awol?

1. He feels no one takes him seriously, here?

2. He got tired of always being the one who carried, this place?

3. Something, bad has happened? God, I hope not!

4. He won the lottery, and said, "hasta la vista motherfuckers."?
