This isn't about evaluation. I'm a verified shitlord for heaven's sake. Rather, this is intended as a public service so those members who are aging and drawing closer to a BMI of 25 can copy my example and don't even approach the danger zone.

No, see, you're just giving a sample menu.

I am going to literally do this in real time (or as close as I can get to real time without being socially rude) for a few months so people get an idea how to space their food, etc.

No, I'm not telling people "oh, you should eat like this." I am simply telling people what I eat. If they want to do something with that, great. If they think it works as a performance art piece, great. If they choose to ignore it altogether, great. It's information: do with it what you will.

To clarify -- this is what I eat every day. I find meals that I like and that are healthy and I stick with them for years.

I just grabbed a handful.  There were 10 almonds.

Though this picture would mislead you into thinking I was eating more than that.

Ahh sorry for the confusion.  The only time listed is 3:30.  As in, "oh hey, its almost time for my 3:30 banana".

I don't always have morning almonds.  I did today because I was especially hungry.  Afternoon snack is a 3:30 banana and a buncha almonds.  Buncha being the key unit of measure.

Jesus Christ . . . It must suck to be a slave to food.  Since high school, almost 40 now, I eat what I want, when ever I want, and don't gain weight.  I have weighed 215 - 220 for the past 20 years.  if i only drink water and no alcohol, I drop to about 200.  Now I am back at the gym because I want to, beat up people.

You're fat!! The logic of "you eat what you want" when you are currently overweight is staggering. Enjoy the 'beetus!

Oh I don't have rules about food.  I too eat however much I want and never gain weight - still 155.

I think I have different ideas about what food is than most people.  For me, food generally doesn't come from a box, a bag, a carton or a drive-thru.  The edible things that you'll find in those places are things I don't want to consume since they don't register as food.  I've seen the effects on people who eat that stuff, and I choose not to do that to myself.

Just because something is edible does not make it food.  It must suck to be a slave to not food.

FWIW, the idea of a 3:30 banana came about because I bring a banana with me as an afternoon snack.  After months (years?) of doing this, I noticed that I almost always got hungry at around 3:30.  Once I connected those two ideas, the name stuck.

6' 5" at 215 lbs = 25.5 BMI (falls into the overweight category)

(not that I care or it matters, I just wanted to participate in the thread)

my own:
5'9" at 155 lbs = 22.9 (normal)

Whoa.  That's poison in a bag.  Thirteen, extruded, deep fried Oven Baked(!), and vacuum sealed ingredients.  In every 28 grams, roughly equivalent to 15 "curls" or 1/8th of the bag you get:

10 grams of fat (36 percent of each bite)
15 grams of carbs (54 percent of each bite)
2 grams of non-nutritive substance (7 percent of each bite)
1 gram of protein (4 percent of each bite)

And that's only if you eat 1/12th of the bag.  More likely you're eating 1/2 of the bag at a time, so 40 grams of fat, 60 grams of sugar, 4 grams of protein and 8 grams of undigestible, yet somehow edible foodstuff.

just about the same dimensions/weight as me...so you must be right at BMI of 26ish
so to get under 25 BMI, you either need to get down to 164 or grow about 3.5 inches :)

and I think the term is pleasantly plump or BBM

nope, it applies to anyone with broad shoulders an above-average muscle mass.  at my peak of my gym'ing and running, my BMI was 26.  for me to get below 25, i would need to weight less than 179.  that won't work on my frame, at least not in a healthy way.

BMI applies to a very average build.  if you're a gazelle - long body, low muscle mass - a BMI below 25 could still be unhealthy.

Lightlife makes a tofu hotdog that is pretty good at approximating a hot dog. Then again, hot dogs were never very high on my list so not a connoisseur by any means.

The tofurkey people do a vegan "Italian sausage" that's great with some onions of everyone else is eating brats or hotdogs.

Your guide to healthy living has just irrevocably lost all credibility by including diet coke.  Sodas are not only not food, they are poisonous.  I am stunned.

Real hot dogs are also not food.
I disagree, but will concede that 90% of them out there are crap with a lot of toxic fillers

Sausages can be food.  Hot dogs and most sausages are not food.

If you give me a choice between aspertame or sugar, I'll tell you sugar has killed billions more.

I 100% agree with this statement, Diet Coke is poison and should never be a part of a diet of some one who is conscious of their health

Now, Beer (http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/can-live-off-vitamins-protein-beer-4960.html)...that's some healthy stuff

They say we're given 100 years to live.  The point at which you die is not when your heart stops beating, it's when your quality of life diminishes to near zero.  You can start subtracting years based on what you eat, your level of activity, your stress level, your social connections.  Eating real food, exercising, managing stress and having friends and family extend not your chronological age, but the amount of time you're able to live life.

I wasn't making a point about sugar vs. sucralose vs aspartame.  I said (all) sodas are poison.  No healthy person should have more than one soda per week, maximum.

Carb, carb, carb...and nectar of life

juice is just sugar water, almost as bad as soda and only nutritional content is usually added not naturally occurring.
Now if you fresh juiced...that's a different story

also breakfast...in my house is always a big meal with few carbs
Americans tend to eat tons of carbs for breakfast and very little veggies/protien

It seems you don't eat enough to be considered healthy.  Yesterday you had grape tomatoes, carrot chips, baked brussels sprout leaves and barley.  While you *could* have eaten 2,000 calories of that, you would have been severely lacking in all macronutrients and many micronutrients.  This is not healthy living.

Oh, no, it's definitely more than 500-600 calories a day. Its definitely a portion-size issue, which is admittedly hard to tell from a bulleted list. My dinner is generally 800-1000 calories on its own with a "snack"-sized lunch. I generally do not eat in the mornings.

I take it you're on some kind of calorie restriction diet with a goal of losing more than 50 pounds.  I'm sorry to tell you that you're doomed to fail with this approach.  You'll need to do this more slowly, and adopt permanent, sustainable lifestyle changes if you ever want to be normal.

I mean, why would someone do that? Why would someone make up a completely separate persona and fantasy meals and post about it on here? That would require a huge amount of effort. If someone wanted to put that kind of effort into this board, they could have an Atomic-esque second profile at that point. That's basically what you are saying, without thinking about it. You're saying: this person has the ability to be multiple boardies.

Well, it's my indulgence, sure. To answer your question, I try to keep the calories in the mixers to an absolute minimum. I buy diet tonic water, mix soda water with my vodka instead of fruit juice whenever possible. I have invented something I call a "skinny long island" which is basically a regular long island but with diet coke instead of regular and soda water with three lemon wedges and a packet of equal or sweet and low instead of sour mix.

Its little things, you know?

it probably contains more fat and calories than you (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calories/generic-pad-ka-prow-32444748) eat in a week.
Not at all. Did you see me posting on Saturday about that giant rice and beans nacho platter I had? I really think you're misconstruing my dinner sizes.

you need to post actual photos
I'm thinking on walkies note too...maybe photos of it after...ie stool shots
that'll really get it shut down!

now we're getting to the meat of the matter.  You don't understand technology.  I've never reposted/shared an Instagram picture here.  I set up a flickr account specifically for uploading / sharing pix on the forum - and it rarely gets used.  Also, flickr does not seem to be about pictures of your meals, so ymmv.

I understand technology I just elect not to use certain things in it. (When I upload photos I use imgur.) I know instagram isn't the only way to upload pictures, I was just saying "posting pictures of your food and how its plated" is a common trope on Instagram and I have no interest in that.

I think you're missing the part that I find other people posting pictures of food inane. Since I do not want to be hypocritical, I don't want to do something that I'd find obnoxious and self-absorbed if someone else did it.

I don't believe google can parse search terms that contain no alphanumeric characters.

It's basically an equal sign with a line through it. In effect, "not equal."

If you really have gotten weight issues under control and your BMI under 25, you should check out one of the most progressive, inviting, difference-making communities (http://www.reddit.com/r/fatpeoplehate) the Internet has to offer.

I am still 6,4 . . . and down to 210, from 230.  I have never understood bmi.  I work out 4 times a week and run everyday now.  I still have a slight tummy for past craft beer drinking, and eating like I was still a teenager, that I know will require hardcore ab work, that I hate to do, to get to the six pack range.

i give myself 2 more months of this way i am living my life now . . . and then i will post a photo of myself here, with the words die, Julian, die carved into my stomach.  the blood dripping from the words, will look awesome.

I keep almonds and kale chips and dry roasted edamame and bananas and blackberries in my personal fridge at my desk.  I am looking to put on as much muscle mass as possible with my work out regime, and am desperate to figure out how to eat properly, ie, as much protein as possible throughout the day and try to eat healthy and never eat at a restaurant ever again.

I came to the realization, last month, that I do not know how to eat properly.

muscletech phase 8 powder, starting with just twice a day, once in the morning and once about 4 or 5 pm.  I read not to take it at night for it is pointless.  52 gram of protein a day, but I am going to start 3 times a day now, I guess taking the final one at night.

I found my next powder I will try on sale for 20 bucks, so I bought it . . . muscletech platinum iso whey.

For my goodnight shake, I do 24g of casein protein mixed into skim milk. It's much sludgier and takes much longer to digest. Plus it's delicious! Always do a shake of 48g of protein and a small teaspoon of creatine after weights, followed by a banana and two glucosamine pills.

I used to have weird mystery injuries ALL THE TIME from lifting weights and ever since I got on the above regimen a few years ago, I've been almost totally injury-free. Of course I also got smarter about doing splits and intervals, but I think they all work together to keep me from getting hurt as I get older. And older. And old.

A typical ejaculation fills up about one teaspoon; the actual amount is determined by a man's age (younger men usually make more semen), when he last ejaculated, and how long he's aroused before ejaculating, among other factors. Contrary to what you've heard, semen is not loaded with calories. Each teaspoon of ejaculate has about five to seven calories and some 200 to 500 million sperm. Since sperm make up only about one percent of semen, what accounts for the other 99 percent? Well, its other ingredients include:
? Fructose sugar
? Water
? Ascorbic acid (a.k.a., Vitamin C)
? Citric acid
? Enzymes
? Protein
? Phosphate and bicarbonate buffers (bases)
? Zinc

Can swallowing semen enrich a protein poor diet? Unless you're gulping gallons of it each day, it's no substitute for real nutritious cuisine! While it may be nutrition you're after, P, semen can also transmit sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It may be a good idea to keep in mind safer sex practices when considering whether or not to swallow.

Lunch . . . Whole grain pasta.  Free range chicken, from a farm I live close to.  Peas from my local farmers market.  Water.

Dinner tonight . . . Sushi.

This is a blow to those of us who hang on your every bite. I don't know how I feel...betrayed, perhaps. In the meantime and for the bleak solace of those of us who are left to carry on without notification of your meals, here's this thing I wrote for this thing I write:

I'm gonna die.  Not today.  Not tomorrow. Not even soon, if I can help it.

It happens to the best of us, and there's nothing we can do about it.  And by death, we should include the condition of those who are alive, but whose quality of life has receded to the point of emptiness.

We more or less know how we're going to die...at least we can whittle it down to a short checklist.  The 5 major causes of death (and decrepitude if you wanna go there) are:

Together, these five conditions cause almost two-thirds of all deaths in the country -- nearly 900,000 each year -- a third of which are fully preventable. This bears repeating:

Three hundred thousand extra people in the U.S.
die every year of one of the above preventable causes
none of which include old age.

The good news is that there is a way to prevent these preventable deaths.  We can improve the quality of our years -- especially our final years -- by changing our daily routines.  Not just for a week, but forever.  Developing good habits (or shedding bad ones!) apparently has a huge effect on the quality and length of our lives. Your lifestyle, in effect, is your best preventive medicine.

Preventable deaths can be reduced by more than 80% by simply eating well, exercising, avoiding tobacco products, and being socially connected.  Doctor David Katz summarizes the "lifestyle as medicine" philosophy by advocating for "Feet, Forks, Fingers. Sleep, Stress and Love".

Regular physical activity (feet) is associated with weight control, reduced inflammation, enhanced immune function and reduced cancer risk specifically. Optimal diet (forks) exerts far-ranging effects on every aspect of physiology, and similarly stands to reduce the risk of all chronic disease. Combine eating well and being active with a commitment to never hold a cigarette (fingers), and the risk of all chronic disease declines by roughly 80 percent.

Those are my top three, but the list of health promotion priorities very reasonably extends to three more. The quality and quantity of sleep has profound effects on psychology, immunology and neurology. A linkage to cancer risk is suggested by a rudimentary connection of these dots. Much the same is true of stress, which can contribute to hormonal imbalances and inflammation that propagate cancer -- or can be managed to prevent such effects.

And, finally, there is love. We are, from our earliest origins, social creatures much influenced by our relationships with others. While love may seem a "warm and fuzzy" topic, it is in fact the cold, hard scrutiny of clinical trials demonstrating that those with loving relationships are far less vulnerable to chronic disease and death than those without.

All these things work on a spectrum, so that if you need to make small changes, you can reap small benefits on your way to a longer, healthier life.

So yeah, I'm gonna die.  Not today.  Not tomorrow. Not even soon, if I can help it.

But as long as I live, I'm gonna maximize my chances for living well.

"To Lose Weight, Eating Less Is Far More Important Than Exercising More"

Agree with the premise.  But once you're at your target weight, activity becomes more important than how much you eat.  Athletes don't diet and exercise.  They eat and train. Food is fuel.

Of course. Every sane person is going to acknowledge diet + exercise > diet. But just diet > just exercise too.

this is the best thing i've read in a long time.  good riddance to bad people.
Yes, a website that hosts rape fantasies, pictures of "attractive" corpses/autopsy photos, /r/coontown, snuff film scripts, and neo-nazi propaganda changed its long running rules towards open speech because a group of 250,000+ subscribers who said "obesity is unhealthy and unattractive and if you're obese it's 100% on your decisions so to hell with #fataccepatance" is beyond all common decency.

We live in a country where 2/3rds of people are overweight, and its a health crisis. What's more heinous: the person who says "try eating less, it's not your 'geneticks' or your 'condishuns' fault, its you," or People Magazine who puts a 300 pounds, size 28+ "model" on its cover to promote being morbidly obese? Should we completely ignore a health crisis because it hurts someone's feelings to be forced to acknowledge IT'S 100% ON YOU.

it is truly amazing how accepted it is to be fat.... in some ways it really is a social disease....

if you're putting on weight as you age STOP FUCKIN' EATING...don't look around you and go "hm...so and so is putting on weight..that guy is putting on weight... let me put some on too! as long as i run my annual half marathon or take my bike out i'm good!"

I mean look at this. Who is harming people, really? The person who says "you're fat, put down the mashed potatoes take a goddamn walk" or the multiple lies on that cover? If that woman is ONLY a size 22, I'm a monkey's uncle. That person is not healthy nor beautiful. They are, invariably, going to die young. I'd rather have my feelings hurt and live three decades longer then die young because no one ever wanted to tell me it was my fault and not magic genetics making me 350 pounds.

And this doesn't even discuss the large communities of obese people who think harassing properly sized humans (particularly women) is totally acceptable.

Except that isn't true. If you want to find me 100 of the loudest drooling-at-the-mouth ranting gay bashers, sure, 1 or 2 will be closet homosexuals (like the rest of the population at large) but not some significant percentage of them. You're conflating anecdotal news stories with ALL homophobes.

No mustard. I don't really know how to describe the product. It's from Poland and I recently discovered it in a "European" market in Richmond. It's basically shredded beats and peppers in a grated "coleslaw" type consistency. You can put it on salad or eat it straight. No additional ingredients or sauce really, aside from maybe a little vinegar. It's called "beet salad" on the packaging but that obviously gives people the wrong idea. It's absolutely delicious, I'll see if there's a website on the packaging when I get home.

I'll see if there's a website on the packaging when I get home.
http://gurman.us/en/vegetables/580-canned-beetroot-with-onion-belveder-svekla-s-lukom-zakrutka-320g.html

It's this product only with peppers instead of onions. (I want to order it with onions because they don't seem to sell that one locally and I love onions.) Same company though. Really good on its own, on a greens salad, or with goat cheese.

Was she hot?

Anyhow, I came here after making fun of my fiancee's favorite FB Board - the beauty detox.

She replied how stupid the 930 Board was, which I readily agreed and then asked what the stupidist topic was over here.  I replied "They're all pretty stupid, but Julian's thread about all the healthy things he eats has to be the dumbest."

"Julian's healthy?"

"I don't know.  I don't read his thread."

"You should send him over to the Beauty Detox page!"

"He wouldn't last three days over there."

"We did have a guy kicked off for posting too many videos of himself"

"Julian's been kicked off the board like three times."

"You can kicked off the 930 Board?!"

"Many have sweetheart, yes."

"Good lord, what do you have to do?  You all seem pretty retarded."

Again, I agreed.  But the gauntlet has been thrown down - join the Beauty Detox FB Board.  You'd probably be the only dude on there.

Also I have been kicked off here precisely once for making a moderator feel bad about his weight.

You seemed to be the only person who actively cared and that was just a manifestation of years-old butthurt over me saying gorging one's self on 1200+ calories of Chipotle daily for lunch is an insane meal for 99+% of people's diet-and-exercise regimen.

grateful seems to subscribe to some belief that anything that is processed or has chemicals that aren't naturally found in the earth somehow stops being food. He's not talking about the strict dictionary definition of "is edible and provides caloric intake" like the majority of us think when we hear the word food. He subscribes to some hyperbolic world view where someone who drinks a Diet Coke once is automatically unhealthy whereas someone who eats a four digit caloric lunch from chipotle daily is healthy simply because those ingredients are not processed.

Or, something to that extent that he will attempt to clarify in a way that makes it sound less bat shit insane.

there is a line

The way they make the bread, the sauces and the processed meat are questionable products that are created almost solely to drive the bottom line and if people like them then that's a bonus
but health is by far the last consideration

it's not just about calories, but nutrients and how your body processes them
Highly refined food is really not the panacea that corporations would have you believe...in fact quite the opposite
your body just doesn't process it like food (remember anal leakage~!)
your brain and body are being tricked with the aid of science
Factory farmed meat can be a pretty nasty cocktail of drugs/antibiotics and very low nutritional content
let alone what it does to the environment and treatment of animals

So I do believe that he is somewhat right when he says 'it's not food'
and I believe it's far healthier to eat more calories than toxic 'food'
also you need fat...just shouldn't be from toxic animals as the crap gets stored in the fat

oh yeah and smoke a joint and chill out

Lightly toasted sourdough
Dollop of Hellmann's
Sliced tomato picked this morning from my backyard
Pinch of Maldon
Freshly ground pepper

In fact, that's what I have had for lunch each day this week and will continue to have each day the vines gift me one of their luscious fruit.  I love this time of year.

I drove by Hutch's house a couple of weeks ago and the yard looked pretty good.  Our public shaming of him totally worked.
YOU'RE WELCOME!

So you're acknowledging that it was indeed you who sent hutch the porn, thus setting off the chain of events that ended with him inadvertently posting his address here and subjecting himself to public shaming?
uh, no. I just made hay out of what he posted.

I'm 5'9 and weight 175 pounds so I guess I'm fat too.
There are certain folks (such as yourself if that photo is legit) who are clearly swole and BMI doesn't apply to. This applies to 0.0003% of all people with a >25 BMI.

a little knowledge for the fat-hating simpletons: it's actually 12% for men.  that's about 1 in 8... definitely not everyone, but more common than you state.

here, suck on some science: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/cp/summer-of-science-2015/latest/how-often-is-bmi-misleading (a follow up to http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/cp/summer-of-science-2015/latest/bmi)

"B.M.I. is commonly used to classify people as overweight or obese because its components, height and weight, are much easier to directly measure than body fat percentage. Affordable and convenient methods of measuring body fat are inaccurate, and more precise tools like a DXA scan are expensive and inconvenient.

The consequence is that some perfectly healthy high-B.M.I. people might be unnecessarily worried about their weight or penalized by higher insurance premiums. And some normal-B.M.I. people may be fatter than they realize and facing the same health risks as the obese."
Title: Re: A rolling compendium of everything Julian eats: a guide to healthy living
Post by: Julian, Forum COGNOSCENTI on September 09, 2015, 01:54:30 pm
Yes, BMI is an imperfect measure. Body fat percentage is much better. Body fat percentage is also not easily measurable. People delude themselves all the time that "it's muscle" when clearly it is not. When a person's BMI matches up with what they look like, that's a pretty strong 1-2 punch.

We do not have a great epidemic in this country of healthy people unnecessarily worrying about a false high BMI number. We DO have a great epidemic of delusional hambeasts who disregard appropriate obese BMI readings because "it's an imperfect measurement, I am the one and special exception with my big bones and condishuns!"

You'll also notice that among women, the false positive rate* is 3%, which is really quite good. The people shouting down BMI and proclaiming HEALTHY AT ANY SIZE are predominately women.

EDIT: * - I am defining the false positive rate as only those who have "healthy" body fat percentages but overweight/obese BMI readings. If anything, BMI understates people's obesity.

So, I usually pack a lunch but I left it in my fridge this morning and decided to go out to a Mexican restaurant about a half mile from my office. It always looked packed so I figured it was probably pretty good. I order a mushroom quesadilla and rice. When it comes, it looks pretty good, I start eating, quesadilla is pretty OK. Then I go for some rice and I go, "wait, what is this?" There was a chunk of potato in my rice.

I figured it fell in by mistake. No big deal. Then after a bite I realize, "hold on, there's all kinds of potato chunks in this. . . and what's that? PINEAPPLE!?" Probably 8-10 small "chunks" of each. Way too many to be accidental.

At the time, I just decided it was the oddest recipe ever but its stuck with me all afternoon. Its really the weirdest thing I've ever seen. Who puts potato and pineapple in Mexican-style rice? Why would a Mexican restaurant even have pineapple in their kitchen to begin with? Are they buying it just for the rice? Is their pineapple added to all sorts of recipes? I almost want to go back tomorrow and order random things to see what other odd additions they make to standard tex-mex fare.

I have heard of it but never ordered it as a vegetarian. A quick googling at least answers my question as to why they have pineapple to begin with, so thank you for that.

I still don't know what sorcery brought about the idea of potato and pineapple Mexican rice, however.

I was with someone who has celiac. If we're splitting something, like the pizza, I don't mind eating gluten-free if that assists someone else.

This Column Is Gluten-Free (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/20/opinion/this-column-is-gluten-free.html)

But of course the gluten-free trend is not just about multiplying celiac sufferers. People decide gluten must be bad for them because they see shelves full of gluten-free food at supermarkets. Forms of food intolerance, whether to wheat or dairy products or something else, have reached near epidemic levels among the global middle class.

Special dietary needs are all the rage. Allergies, real or imagined, multiply. One in five Britons now claim some form of intolerance, yet a 2010 Portsmouth University study found the claims were often unfounded. The narcissism of minor differences finds expression in the food-intolerance explosion: Having a special dietary requirement is one way to feel special in the prevailing ?me? culture.

it goes both ways on that as I know some people with deadly nut allergies and have spent time in the ER because of it.
Gluten-free is absurd levels now
but there is a real...but very small portion of the population that really should avoid the stuff

that whole shelves of stuff is being sold is just marketing to idiots
and they are eating it up (pun intended)

I also have an issue with all this fake meat stuff
If you are a vegetarian/vegan...why do you need products like tofurkey, tofudogs and Veggie bacon strips
just bonkers...plus that stuff tastes like absolute crap and really isn't that healthy for you

Vegetarians should really avoid mass produced tofu in general...unless they like manboobs
TOP TEN REASONS TO AVOID SOY
1.Soybeans contain large quantities of natural toxins or ?antinutrients?. First among them are potent enzyme inhibitors that block the action of trypsin and other enzymes needed for protein digestion.
2.These inhibitors are not deactivated during cooking & processing.  Test animals fed these inhibitors developed enlargement and pathological conditions of the pancreas, including cancer.
3.Soybeans also contain haemagglutinin, a clot-promoting substance that causes red blood cells to clump together.
4. 99% of soy is genetically modified and it among the highest contamination by pesticides of any of our foods.
5.Soybeans are high in phytic acid, a substance that blocks the uptake of the essential minerals calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and especially zinc, in the intestinal tract.
6.Soy products contain high levels of aluminum, leached from the aluminum tanks in which they are acid washed and processed at high temperatures.
7.Nitrites, which are potent carcinogens, are formed during the spray-drying of soy.
8.Soy Protein Isolates, which are shown to enlarge the pancreas and thyroid and increase fatty acid deposits in the liver.
9.Soy contains toxic isoflavones.
10.Soy foods have a high concentration of goitrogens which block production of thyroid hormones.

I concur on the "intolerance" thing. It's mostly psychosomatic or just jumping on a trend.

The soybean/tofu rant I sort of agree with and sort of don't. Tofu for every meal is not a great idea. Tofu products 2-3 times a week -- you know: moderation -- isn't really going to be deleterious to one's health.

(I'm not a huge user of the "fake meat" substitutes, aside from black bean veggie "burgers" but I don't have an issue with them. If one has a moral objection to meat but still wants to simulate the taste, that's fine with me. And as to vague claims of "isn't that healthy for you," again, moderation.)

I have this neighbor who feeds their kid tofugly things three meals a day and they are convinced they are providing that child healthy sustenance

Post by: Julian, Forum COGNOSCENTI on October 19, 2015, 01:06:10 pm
I guess one of my biggest annoyances with discussing food/nutrition with people is so many people want to treat "healthy" as a binary thing: a certain food is either "healthy" or it is "not healthy." And in the vast majority of cases, that's idiotic. Almonds are healthy and ice cream is not healthy so it must follow that eating 8,000 calories of almonds a day is healthy and eating a 1/4 cup of ice cream once a week is unhealthy. No, that's absurd.

The totality of one's diet and exercise regimen is healthy or not. Jaded can eat an amount of food that the average person could not do so healthily because his exercise regimen is standard deviations above the mean. Someone else eating the exact same foods with a sedentary life-style is going to turn up very different health-wise. Everything is interconnected. But people like to make grand sweeping statements like "soy is unhealthy" and its just eye-roll inducing. How much soy? How often? What are you eating in addition to soy to fill other macro-nutrient needs? Like no, if you're the model of diet and exercise and eat a tofu scramble once a week, you're not going to grow giant moobs of cancer.

EDIT: None of that was particularly directed at Sidehatch, just a general comment.

I didn't say it caused it, that's not where I was going with that, but I can see my choice of phrasing could be improved.  And I would never argue that my ass doesn't have a wide vocabulary.

I'm an anecdotal internet doctor...please never take my advice...seriously!

I feel that what you eat, is really important, from whilst in the womb until the last day you walk on this plane. It's a corny saying, but you are what you eat. There is a tremendous amount of 'food' out there and personally I think it's poison and won't kill you in small doses (kinda like cigarettes).

That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

To add some context to your italicized summation, what you're calling "meat" is "human DNA" which speaks more to unhygienic production standards (which is obviously alarming on its own) more than a bait-and-switch where people are labeling something vegetarian when it is not.
