I have a drive coming up for Thanksgiving and would like something other than NPR to listen to. Last year, Miss P recommended Serial which I greatly enjoyed. Can someone recommend something similar? What podcasts do you guys like?
-
apparently there are hours more of podcasts related to that serial story and new information that has surfaced.
I can't get myself to get excited any more though

Yeah, I've followed some of that on reddit. Its pretty obvious he's guilty (albeit this was not proven to a legal standard imho), not really interested in indulging it any more.
I was hoping season 2 would be out by now (supposedly about Bergdahl) but its not.
-
I'm enjoying the Gimlet stuff, and to some extent the Maximum Fun content too.
-
I'm loving Womp It Up. It's the ladies from Playing House, but it's funnier than the show.
Marc Maron has some really good interviews on WTF, my husband loves the Dead Authors podcast, but I personally can't get into it, The Moth, Radio Lab, and the classic This American Life.
-
Risk! is sort of like The Moth, but R-rated.

These appear to basically be people telling stories, yes? Why am I supposed to care?
I'm not trying to be funny, I don't get it.

Those podcasts are not meant for people like you.

WTF is always worth checking. he's had so many great people on his show and he does a fantastic job asking interesting questions.
i'll throw out an outdated podcast that i loved: you look nice today. i think it fits your type of humor.
there's also roderick on the line (john roderick and marlin mann). it's like amateur punditry.

aren't there any fat-hate podcasts out there? have none of the sanctimonious jerks that make up that group evolved to the point of figuring out how to use a computer and a microphone? or is podcasting too personal and too identifiable, and fat-haters generally can't make it past firing anonymous missives from behind the security of a keyboard?

No idea about podcasts but how about Garth Risk Hallberg's City On Fire as spoken word?

It's really more of a visible medium.

That "How Did This Get Made" one looks promising. Thanks.

It's perfectly reasonable to hate fat advocates. For me, it's how they spread misinformation like mayonnaise on their food. Is it seriously that hard to admit that you are eating too much and can lose the weight if you legitimately try? They will say that "____ condishun" is what causes their weight gain and it couldn't possibly be the 18 litres of mountain dew they drink daily, and of course the laws of thermodynamics clearly do not apply to them so they can't lose it. They go on about how much they hate being fat but, God forbid you explain how to lose weight, then they talk about how they go to the gym 18 hours a week and eat only 500 calories per day and still can't lose weight or just outright start name calling like 5th grader. Naturally anything that shatters their permanent victim status is vilified and "triggering". They go around spreading buttery lies to such a degree that it sabotages many hams from seeing the light and becoming healthy human beings. I hate the ham delusion.

Mystery Show is a must, so well done.
I like Dinner Party Download, it can be hit or miss but it's worth checking out.
-
Humor:
the Cracked Podcast
Unpopular Opinion (also by a Cracked columnist)
SModcast
Wrestling With Depression (standup comic talks to people about mental issues, usually lighthearted but can get heavy)
Music:
- Height Zone World (Height interviews mainly Baltimore musicians; some that have wide appeal like Future Islands or Jenn from Wye Oak or Dan Deacon)
- This is How We Do It (new Pitchfork podcast that goes behind the scenes for how albums are made)
Also just added the Bret Easton Ellis podcast to listen to later, due to being interested in the new Eli Roth interview, but I have no idea if I will like it or not.

I found this through a google search earlier and enjoyed this week's episode. I think this is what I'm going to go with.

I will have to check those out. The This is How We Do It podcast that I mention is a similar idea. The first two episodes were Protomartyr (semi-serious look at their songwriting process) and Wolf Eyes (they basically told the interviewer to fuck off with boring questions and talked Trip Metal for a while). I know it is Pitchfork, and some around here consider them evil, but they are a necessary evil (that is how someone I respect who runs two local labels, and is in a noise punk band, described them when I gave him shit for reposting their content).

I think at that point, you'll need to stop messing with the source, and focus on the listener. I mean, I suppose you could try to work with some EM shielding or something to prevent signal leakage. But really you're going to want to start thinking about noise cancelling headphones, acoustic shielding or inducing deafness as effective strategies. LMK if you need any help with that.
-

If I ever have the misfortune of being in the area of an audio source playing Steve Czaban -- the RatBastard of Sports radio -- I will take you up on that.

ham delusion.
Can't really say POTW material, but possibly a great name for a band
-
also what was the consensus on a good podcast app?
stitcher is ok
or all of you on iphones?
-
Surprised nobody here's mentioned Tom Scharpling/Jon Wurster AKA "The Best Show."
-
Why do you guys hate Czaban so much? Penis envy?

I think "the Ratbastard of sports radio" pretty much summed up my thoughts but you did a nice job unintentionally adding to it by immediately implying people who don't like him have small penises. You're playing stereotypical Czaban listener role to a tee.

Sorry I don't follow your guys' reacharounds here, but neither of you have actually explained why Czaban is worthy of your derision. Except for your penis envy.
Go ahead, knock me out.

Oh, you're doubling down on that viewpoint. Great. Don't you have a woman to assault somewhere "who has it coming"?

I predict you will enjoy yourself immensely.

So you, again, not only fail to provide any example of why Czaban is deserving of your ire but you turn it into a female sexual assault blast. You are a class act.

DPD doesn't work as well binge-listening to multiple episodes back to back as TAL does, but received in its intended weekly dose, it's a nice podcast. TAL is TAL.
-
TAL is TAL.
TAL is also NPR, which you said you didn't want.
-
TAL is TAL.
TAL is also NPR, which you said you didn't want.
I am well aware TAL airs on NPR. When I said I was looking for "something other than NPR to listen to" I meant I did not want to listen to the live NPR Now feed the entire way, not that I was opposed to all NPR-related properties.
-
This American Life is not an NPR show. It is produced by WBEZ in Chicago and distributed by PRI, which is a production house that competes with NPR's programming. TAL is often broadcast by NPR member stations, as well as non-member stations, but that just means a particular station subscribed to it. Serial also is not an NPR production in any way.
Just sayin.

this is shameless, i know, but this show is the best thing ever created! It was on Sirius for 12 years, on the gay channel, until sirius decided to restructure the channel. now they have gone to a pay service podcast. you don't have to be gay to love it; they have plenty of straight listeners . . . and they don't shove gay anything down your throat.
part political, part sex advise, part pop culture, part crazy, all intelligence and awesomeness.
give it a chance, even if for just a month.

Pay? Hell no. They get to get some sponsors and go free.
-
People, like myself, who are obsessed with them would definitely pay. I signed up for a year from the start.

I was totally wrong about this . . . is not a "podcast." This is a daily, live radio show, with guests and phone calls. They do also, have a free podcast, but the pay part is for the live radio show. They also a have a forum chat room which is crazy, a twice a year cruise for listeners, groups to joins for even more craziness.

You're taking single-malt whiskeys out of Relaxer's kid's mouths. . .

But we'll still take your apologies.

He listened to WTF instead of NPR (his normal habit for that time), and felt the need to apologize for skipping NPR. (what I got out of his post, maybe I am wrong, who knows with him)
He did not imply that WTF was a program for NPR.

Switched on Pop and Song Exploder both deconstruct songs and interview the artists. Interesting to see "behind the curtain" on music...
From the same guy who does Song Exploder and The West Wing Weekly, a new podcast called City Soundtracks (https://play.google.com/music/m/Ieungpnrw7lizk3lcjmdon2k5kq?t=City_Soundtracks), a traveling conversation about the people, places and moments that shape our musical lives. Each episode features an artist and a city where musicians lead listeners on a tour of the city through conversation and music.

What is the overlap of people who do not know how to spell "spiel" correctly but do know how to spell "glockenspiel"? That venn diagram has to be sliver-esque.

Yes, intriguing...

thanks for the recommendation of S-Town (https://stownpodcast.org/), imma gonna save that one for my next road trip.
two podcasts that i've thoroughly enjoyed:
The Message - http://themessagepodcast.com/about/
LifeAfter (you get this one by subscribing to The Message, it's the same feed)
both are a cross of classic radio theater and the SciFi channel - don't knock it 'til you try it. the stories got me completely hooked. The Message episodes are 10-12 minutes each so you burn through 'em.
-

I listened to this but I had some issues with it. It constantly made reference to rumours -- Richard is gay, he's dressing in drag -- but then said the issues were off-limits and they weren't going to discuss them. You don't get to cut the baby in half. Either don't mention them at all or look into them. You can't pretend you're a journalist by mentioning something everyone knows (RS is gay) or rumors (he's transitioning) and then refuse to look into them. Oh, so you're just intending to do a shitty job. Great.
The whole thing with the masseuse is a perfect example. Put in the context of a jilted ex-lover (which is what anyone with an IQ of 75 knows he is) it colors all their testimony. But our lame narrator refuses to address that.
I liked it more at the beginning and thinks it reveals that RS is actually really fascinating both as a person and a psychological case study but it got absolutely nowhere. It walked a weird line between being titillating with the rumors but not actually journalistic in its reporting on them.

I don't think I've mentioned this in this thread before but I have come to love How Did This Get Made? (http://www.earwolf.com/show/how-did-this-get-made/) I think much of the back catalogue is now behind a paywall but it cracks me up so much. Jason Manzukis, or whatever his name is, is in his perfect element ripping terrible films to shreds.

S-Town is amazing. Also really liked In The Dark.

Do you need to have seen the bad movie in advance of each episode in order to get the most out of it? I can't do a podcast that requires homework.

Its definitely better if you know the shitty film they're reviewing but I do not know the film most of the time and it's still hilarious. If look at the back catalog, there's lots of films you've no doubt seen which is a good way to dip your toes in the water.
Some favorite episodes (no idea which of are currently behind a paywall, they cycle free/pay episodes monthly): Teen Witch, Junior, Face/Off, Roadhouse, Kazaam.

interesting read: Why Is Joe Rogan So Popular? (https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2019/08/my-joe-rogan-experience/594802/)
i occasionally put on an episode of JRE as background while doing other stuff, like cleaning. can't say that i share the author's dire take on joe's toxic masculinity, and i don't agree that he's as right-wing as described in the article, but regardless... an interesting read.

Derek and Romaine 2.0
More of a 5 day a week live radio show, than podcast. Gay, to the highest level of fucking gay.
And if you don't like Joe . . . Get out. Get out on the street, and get run over by a metro bus, or electric scooter; your choice.

my husband loves the Dead Authors podcast, but I personally can't get into it
I have been spotted recently in my car letting out gargantuan belly laughs whilst enjoying the Dead Authors Podcast
been off the air for a while (aired from 2011-2015)
I just can't get enough of their factually inaccurate improv with old timey English speak and bashing of the evil Jules Verne
-
Found a great new podcast
First off, great name:Bandsplain
What I already love so far is they mention a song....then they actually play it
Honestly, what drives me crazy about most music podcasts, is sometimes they might play a 5-second clip, but almost never a full song
well, the podcast is over 2 hour long 5 hours long, so there is that
They really do deep dives, starting from the early and all the early branches and pull lots of cool related snippets of the band in real time
This episode on Pavement (https://open.spotify.com/episode/1V5yM6ZyVIsRosOpBRe0d7?si=969aa5fbd12d4745) is awesome
(felt like being in the car with Hutch circa 96)
Didn't know Malkmus and David Berman went to UVA in the 80s and did a radio show there!?
Its amazing they put out a 1000 copies of a self-released ep: Slay Tracks (https://www.ebay.com/itm/401857814008?hash=item5d90979df8:g:y~oAAOxydlFSs2rt) and only mailed it to djs/record labels/record stores ...and within months it's mentioned in Spin and the Wedding present records Box Elder in England and John peel is playing it on air
There was a funny story about how they record it and SS is in charge of getting this ep out to the masses and Stephen is back-packing across Europe and he hears his record store in Germany, just a few months later
Frontwards get a nice showcase
Other shows that are qued up: Lemonheads, Wilco, GnR, Misfits, Pixes, Minutemen, Hold steady, Fishbone, NIN, Weezer
Editorial note, this is on the evil spoitify and if you listen to this you support everything that is evil in the world and probably should just kill your self after reading this
-

Eject! Eject!

A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs
(https://500songs.com/) by Andrew Hickey is amazing
It is soo good. I'm on song 29 and we just got to Maybellene! ( so really in depth)
what is fascinating is all the other things like switching from laquer to vinyl (and the invention of the LP) radio and jukeboxes only wanted vinyl and a whole era of performers pretty much disappeared
copyright laws
songwriting vs arranger vs performer
of course lots of racism, drug use and wife beating
of course rick rubin turned me on to this
