Title: The Star Wars discussion/SPOILER thread
Post by: sweetcell on December 18, 2015, 11:28:06 am
i will be seeing Star Wars either tonight or saturday night.  until then, i don't want to hear about it.  after that, i'll be stinking up this thread with my thoughts ;D

so if you've seen the movie and are dying to share your insights, without being a prick and ruining the fun for others, this is the place.

I'm going tonight, along with five children, possibly six. Oh yay.

However, I will have another dad with me, and both of us are elated at the fact that Poto Yard now sells beer. That should help mellow the kids out somewhat.

. . . the fact that Poto Yard now sells beer. That should help mellow the kids out somewhat.
It should also help mitigate the fact that you have to see Star Wars which is nerd crap written for children.

Inside Out and Shaun the Sheep Movie were also 2015 movies that were written for children that made for excellent adult viewing.

How many ounces of tincture are you taking down prior to the viewing?

I had to google "tincture" and having done so, I'm still not entirely certain what it is. Regardless, I'm a classic 'whiskey and a joint' kind of guy. Simple man, simple pleasures, etc.

It's weird for me because Star Wars came out when I was 7, Empire when I was 11, and Return when I was 14. I mean, these movies couldn't have hit my formative years at a better time. I watched all 3 dozens and dozens of times. And yet the following three prequel movies so completely damaged my love for Lucas that I'm looking forward to seeing TFA but in the same way I was looking forward to the Chris Pine 'Star Trek' movies: Oh, this might be fun, why not.

In contrast, in the weeks leading up to the Phantom Menace premiere, I couldn't stop feeling excited. And when I walked out of the theater, I was sorely disappointed.

way too much hype....

I like that Groucho Marx quote which Woody Allen always talks about "I wouldn't want to be any part of a club that would have me"

If everyone is getting crazy about Star Wars I head for the hills.. the overcommercialization of the thing since Disney bought it is way over the top.. Star Wars Mac and Cheese, Stars Wars condoms, Stars Wars shirts, Star Wars underwear.. come on

Did you not notice that there were fucking minions attached to everything last summer?

And pointing to the Star Wars franchise and over-commercialization is like accusing the ocean of suddenly being wet.

Lol have you ever seen the amounts of merch there were when those movies came out in the 70s and 80s? Come on dude. Sheets! McDonalds tie ins! TV specials! Books! Toys! come on.

*SPOILERS AFOOT*

Saw it Thursday night, got there a freaking hour before the movie and still had to sit up front. Probably one of the most fun movies of the year. Was a little taken aback about how many familiar tropes there were. I mean, another planet-sized-planet-destroying-death planet? Really? It was a super fun adventure and it established the new characters fine, but I wish there was more of a resolution. I figured Abrams would have to throw something semi big in ["killing off Han"], but it didn't really FEEL like anything was accomplished. All just starting points for the larger story. It just kind of sucks that we may look back on it as the beginning instead of a great story itself.

I found myself rooting for all the new characters a lot more than I did the old ones and I think that's cool. It was a ton of fun and I'm definitely going to be catching it again this week. I really appreciate how the CGI was toned WAY down from the prequels. It was nice to see real creatures and practical sets being utilized.

There was also a freaking MERCH stand at my theatre like it was a concert or something. Shirts, posters, hats, other small trinkets. It was funny.

I went Friday night with a gaggle of goddamn children. First of all, this was the 7:30 pm show at Poto Yard, so not exactly out in the sticks. And it wasn't even full, or packed for that matter. I mean, it was 2/3 full but I remember seeing Fast & Furious 7 on the Saturday of its opening weekend and the theater was pandemonium. We had enough empty seats around us to pile up all the coats, which was pleasant.

As for the movie, I give it a 6/10. I just didn't care much about any of the new characters, whether it was Fin or the woman or even another tortured emo villain. It seemed like a huge stretch that a rando girl just happens to see a robot in a net and frees it and oh hey, is suddenly, coincidentally a big Force person, who learns how to use the Force in about 5 minutes. And why did the girl and Leia have this huge dramatic hug when they met? How do they know each other? Do they just sense "Ahhhh, I suspect the plot has big things in store for us!"

And why does R2D2 just all of a sudden wake up?

And why does the villain keep taking off and putting back on his mask?

And it's weird how the head of a huge villainous operation is always showing up to attack the heroes like Jason. Seriously, the heroes will be in the middle of nowhere and all of a sudden, there's emo villain there to attack!

And it seemed weird how all of these extraordinary galactic operations are unable to capture one goofy little robot whose just walking/rolling around all casual like

I did enjoy it and it was fun, but I kept having these niggling questions in my head.

Also, if the entire galaxy is frantically trying to get to Luke first, why does the Rebellion send some random chick who just happened to wander in instead, of, oh I don't know, Luke's sister who is now a military general?

They said R2 put itself into sleep mode until Luke came back. He must have sensed Luke was back and turned on, duh.

They don't show it, but Darth Vader also takes off his helmet in the original trilogy at least twice. Both that and the Kylo Ren unveiling were pretty disappointing [pasty white raisin dude & emo looking dude]. The point of that is that he ISN'T Darth Vader and that he's a spoiled brat, hence why he's always butting heads with that other commander/general dude.

As for him always being there, isn't he the leader of the First Order army or whatever? He made it HIS personal mission to get that robot/map to Luke Skywalker. Not to mention as soon as they get to whats-her-face's hideout there is a First Order spy alerting them immediately that the robot is there. The robot holding the map to "the last jedi" that will "end the war" and "let the first order rule the galaxy".

And to be fair they DID say that Bb8 was a rare droid AND it didn't have any tracking devices the First Order could take advantage of AND they were hopping from system to system trying to avoid detection and it's 1 freaking droid out of thousands, if not millions, if not billions across how many solar systems? Even modern day we can barely locate ISIS members in caves let alone a long, LONG, time ago in a galaxy far far away ;)

As for the hug, I just figured it was "Oh man, you were a scrap girl and you just witnessed tons of shit go down and just got chased across the galaxy by the super evil First Order. You poor child." idk. That's what I thought it was. Just a motherly moment for Laia. I also think the sending of Rey to get Luke from his hideout was to show him The Force was still alive, seeing as how his family/friends had just been trying to get him to come back. Although I think it's shitty for him to leave when he knows Kylo Ren and the First Order are out there...

My buzz action was on point. Fortunately, my youngest son opted to see the Chipmunk movie with some of the other younger wiener kids (lol at dopey dad Andrew agreeing to chaperone the little kid movie) and I had another dad with me at Star Wars so I was able to go out to the car with no problem and without guilt about leaving a group of 11 yr olds alone (which isn't really a concern -- these kids got pretty big all of a sudden)

In fact, I left the theater right as the previews were starting, was probably out in the car for 20 minutes leisurely enjoying myself and my ways, went back in and got my usual small diet coke and two spit cups, took a leak, then went back into the theater and still had to sit through another 5 previews. What I've heard is that the 3D version only has 3, but I can tell you that the 2D version has like 15. So annoying.

Poto Yard selling beer is a nice feature though it takes them FOREVER to actually deliver your beer once you've ordered it. And they have a 2 beer minimum so I was only able to get three of them. My man Irish Jim managed four before they cut him off. Hey, it's a long movie.

DFA, all of these are legitimate arguments that make some sense, except:

Quote
They said R2 put itself into sleep mode until Luke came back. He must have sensed Luke was back and turned on, duh.

But Luke wasn't at all back. He was out hiking Old Rag on some planet when Rey showed up and harshed his mellow. Also, it would've been pretty funny if Rey had hiked all that way up the mountain and it turns out that's the day Luke felt like being lazy and just going to a movie instead.

Copenhagen is the Guiness Stout of chewing tobacco. People who don't know chew think Cope is the strongest, most dangerous dip, but in the same way that Guiness has this reputation and yet is only like 4% abv, Copenhagen does not provide the same level of knock-yer-socks-off buzz that Kodiak does.

finally saw it tonight.  splurged for 3D and wish i hadn't.  the bridge of my nose is fairly wide so standard-issue glasses don't fit me very well. the 3D was cool but the edges looked a little outta focus and i found that highly distracting.

i might up relaxer's rating to 7/10, maybe 7.5.  cool movie bro, but my mind is intact.  the meetup between Han and Leia was paaaaaaainful.

Also, if the entire galaxy is frantically trying to get to Luke first, why does the Rebellion send some random chick who just happened to wander in instead, of, oh I don't know, Luke's sister who is now a military general?

See!

EDIT: Also seen a lot of complaints about Kylo Ren not using 'The Dark Side' to defeat Fin and Rey but he beats the shit out of Fin and then gets out "forced" by Rey. Didn't they say multiple times that he never finished training? Hell he even goes to what's-his-name and ASKS to finish his training. People, yo.

Hated it.

Too much rehash stories that made the original 3 movies great.

Not enough originality.

Acting was horrible, the worst being han solo.

When did star wars become a comedy?

The villian was weak and the supreme bad guy was a joke.

Jj, ruined the essence of star wars.

That last scene was shot in Ireland on the Skellig Rocks - pretty cool place

I was a bit ticked at the story re-hashing, but I thought he did a great job establishing the new characters going forward. I think [hope] he was doing the re-hashing just to ease people into the latest leg of the story.

If they reveal in the VIII that there's a 2nd planet killing planet and Luke is Rey's father, well then...

I thought a lot of the new characters acting was great, but both Carrie and Harrison were by far the weakest performances in the film.

Way too much action and not enough story
For me 4 & 5 are 10's and 6 is a 9
1 & 2 were like 3's and don't even think I saw 3?

I'd give this in the 7-8 range.

There was a laugh out loud moment when Rey and Finn first meet

and you are correct . . . han and leia and Chewbacca and Luke were the worst.  Rey and Finn, were actually pretty good characters.  only jj, can ruin the beloved.

the only beloved characters that were in the prequels were the emperor, and darth vadar for about five seconds at the end of the last film.  and the emperor was the fucking shiznit, in those movies.

I meant it as the franchise is beloved.  There were plenty of cool expanded universe comics and books with new characters; before the Prequels came along.  Though none of those are canon now, so who gives a shit, right?

way too much hype....

I like that Groucho Marx quote which Woody Allen always talks about "I wouldn't want to be any part of a club that would have me"

If everyone is getting crazy about Star Wars I head for the hills.. the overcommercialization of the thing since Disney bought it is way over the top.. Star Wars Mac and Cheese, Stars Wars condoms, Stars Wars shirts, Star Wars underwear.. come on

I finally gave the Clone Wars cartoon a spin, and I loved it.  I will watch the rest of them and then Rebels over the next few months.

My favorite Star Wars books were the Thrawn Trilogy; Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command.

Also, Consequence of Sound ran a cool article ranking all 18 movies, cartoons, TV movies, Holiday Special, etc...
http://consequenceofsound.net/2015/12/ranking-every-star-wars-film-and-tv-show-from-worst-to-best/

I decided to watch stuff I havent seen in forever (like the Ewok movies) and see the stuff I had never seen (like the Clone Wars cartoon, the Droids series)...

Recently I saw the Holiday Special for the first time.. Yikes.

Not all blasters were capable of cutting straight through Stormtrooper's armor. Han Solo's DL-44 "found increased use at the hands of outlaws and fringers on the edge of legality, groups like smugglers and the Rebel Alliance due to its capability to penetrate stormtrooper armor. This caused the Empire to put a restriction order upon this model, restricting and technically outlawing the purchase and ownership of the gun."

everyone knows that.

Supreme Chancellor: Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis "the wise"?

Anakin Skywalker: No.

Supreme Chancellor: I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life... He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying.

Anakin Skywalker: He could actually save people from death?

Supreme Chancellor: The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.

Anakin Skywalker: What happened to him?

Supreme Chancellor: He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.

Has anyone seen it in Vision + Atmos (aka AMC Prime?). Would be curious to hear from others what they thought of it. Have yet to see a movie in Vision and have heard mixed things when compared to IMAX. Definitely did not prefer the 3D version, but Atmos for sound is pretty sweet!

On the star wars thing, I think the liberal media already made a stink about this
but I actually am annoyed that there are soo few Rey action figure's and toys in general
My daughter is a huge fan of Rey and out of almost an entire isle of Star wars crap...1 rey action figure and it was like $15.  (I guess that's the going rate these days)

I have the Rey and Kylo Ren Pop Funkos, so far.

can't really see a 6yr old having fun with a pop funkos
while they are cool, but really for adults
they are just for sitting on the shelf, not 'playing star wars'

i could play with them if I was a kid... It's called using your imagination.
"Imagination"? Is that an app?

No, no it's not.  Playing with a block of wood and a lump of beeswax, that's imagination.  Playing with plastic toys from a movies does not require any creative thought.

These are Pop Funkos:

Sidehatch said:

SO I said:

To Sidehatch, because of lack of articulation with these figures, that kids would not have fun playing with them.  I disagreed and said that was not true, you can play with these if you used your imagination.

for the record...my kids often use beeswax and color (not using coloring books)

but I don't know that making up scenes with the action figures doesn't require any creative thought
There were no horses, maganatiles or giant wood blocks in the star wars movies....but in her's there are

and I guess if given no alternative ...the pop funkos could be used
but they were purley designed to sit on the shelf (or in their cube) of an adult who likes anime stuff...period

Thought it was great. A little bummed once I realized it happens leading into A New Hope. I thought these were going to be separate stories told within the same universe, I didn't realize it was directly involving the episodic movie series. Still looks super fun and awesome and am excited. Will be very interesting to see a Star Wars without the regular characters we've come to know/expect.

Plus, another strong female lead. I'm down.

95% of people who frequent here I would not believe had never listened to Wilco. Walkie falls into the 5% where I absolutely believe he'd never knowingly listened to the band. That rings true.

Sure:

I, like you, would generally find a claim of "someone on here never having listened to Wilco" as unlikely. But this is Walkie. I believe virtually any otherwise-insane claim if its about Walkie. If Walkie claimed he'd never eaten spaghetti I would go "hmm. . . sounds legit."

Last Jedi trailer was underwhelming. I wanted to see Rey surrounded by Kylo and his henchmen when suddenly there's a close-up of a steel hand gripping a light saber. I would've shit myself.

As long as we're chatting, rank the SW movies

Empire
Star Wars
The Force Awakens
Rogue 1
Return of the Jedi

there are no other movies to consider for this list

Underwhelming?  It was a teaser.  What were you expecting?  They can't blow their load on the first tease...

Apparently this is the first movie preview you've ever seen then.

There was nothing here like "Chewie, we're home." The money shot was Luke muttering that it's time for the jedi to end.

More than half of it was location shots or worthless fade-to-blacks. Nothing about any of the new characeters.

It was very lackluster.

goodness these quotes just made me laugh so hard I woke my sleeping family

But more importantly, it confirmed that the title isn?t referring to the last Jedi (as in ?We?re happy you?re leasing this apartment. The last Jedi we had in here was a real asshole?), but rather, the final Jedi.
and

Still, ?Fuck That, My Watch Says It?s Still Jedi O?Clock? is a pretty compelling argument

Getting rid of Harrison Ford's character is an inevitability because the actor is in his mid-to-late 70s. Han Solo had limited time left in the films' narrative universe regardless of whether the character's passing is a result of death via space ninjas or old age.

On the other hand, Disney has a vested interest to keep space ninjas -- the primary conceit of a series of films they paid billions of dollars for the right to make more of -- around. You don't pay billions of dollars to buy the right to space ninjas only to then get rid of space ninjas.

Seems likely that Leia has to die in the Last Jedi for obvious reasons. That being the case, there's no way they kill Luke off as well. I just can't imagine them offing both Luke and Leia in the same movie. They're going to want to drag that out as long as possible.

I figured this was the obvious cop out, but they've already had Han teased as being "offed" in the original trilogy, I don't see them doing that again.... but, episode 7 was just A New Hope [2017] so who knows lol.

Either way I'm excited. Did we get a Rogue One teaser before Force Awakens? I'm wondering if we'll get a teaser for that Han Solo prequel when ep 8 comes out. Hm.

Since, the last Jedi will more than likely be a direct rip-off of Empire Strikes Back, I'm convinced snoke will be somebody's father.

I 100% agree with this but they will also find a way to blow up a death star.

I heard a rumor that Snoke was actually one of the younglings who ends up surviving [somehow?] after Anakin goes in and beats up all those kids like a big man.
