Title: Your 13 favorite albums of 2017?
Post by: Space Freely on December 05, 2017, 10:46:14 am
Remember, really long lists put people to sleep.

Mine, at this point unordered:

Steve Earle, So You Wanna Be an Outlaw
The National, Sleep Well Beast
The War on Drugs, A Deeper Understanding
St. Vincent, Masseduction
Valerie June, The Order of Time
Alvvays, Antisocialites
Taylor Knox, Love
Jeff Tweedy, Together at Last
New Pornographers, Whiteout Conditions
Kelly Lee Owens, s/t
Spoon, Hot Thoughts
Old 97's, Graveyard Whistling
Waxahatchee, Out in the Storm

Edit: I said 13 and only included 12. Forgot the last one in the original post.

I was just thinking about a list the other day... I'm not even sure I've listened to 13 new albums this year. I'll report back!

Agree about Old 97s...second winner of an album in a row... only downside to this band is the drummer always plays the same shuffle beat...

I'd say my 2 biggest disappointments were the Queens of the Stone Age LP and the Real Estate LP (which I think I've managed to get through 3 times total and won't bother with again).

Starting to feel old. This was the worst year I can recall for both concert attendance and new albums.

Only have 8 off the top of my head (no order):

Slowdive
Unsane
QOTSA
Kendrick Lamar
Father John Misty
Full of Hell
Godflesh
Dirty Projectors

I felt this year wasn't a great year for album releases, so I doubt I can come up with 13. A lot of good reissues though (R.E.M., Wilco, Radiohead, etc).

Slowdive - Slowdive
The Dears - Times Infinity, Volume Two
Spoon - Hot Thoughts
The Jesus and Mary Chain - Damage and Joy
The New Pornographers - Whiteout Conditions
Offa Rex - The Queen of Hearts
Arcade Fire - Everything Now (didn't like it at first, but it inexplicably grew on me)

For me, one standout in 2017: Jay-Z - 4:44 (a superb album that I had on heavy rotation)

The next group of standouts:

Lorde - Melodrama
Jason Isbell - The Nashville Sound
Run the Jewels - RTJ3  (technically 12.24.16, but close enough)

Others I listened to a lot:

LCD Soundsystem - American Dream
Liam Gallagher - As you were
The National - Sleep Well Beast
Kendrick Lamar - Damn.
Spoon - Hot Thoughts

Too recent but showing promise of decent rotation:

Taylor Swift - Reputation
Chris Stapleton - From a Room, Vol 2 (preferred over vol 1 already)
U2 - Songs of Experience

To be honest, one of my favorite records that I discovered this year was actually from 1987..."Mother Juno" by the Gun Club.

I agree about the new LCD....it didn't work for me.  They were still great at the Anthem, though.

Agreed. Huge disappointment, but still so so good live.

After listening to this album back to back with the new Charlotte Gainsbourg, it's possibly I might swap those two, hence dropping KLO. Then again, maybe not.

There's an Auschwitz-rebranding joke somewhere in there, but I won't be the one to make it.

Fever Ray was the biggest disappointment for me this year. I was so psyched for that thing, and it just does nothing for me.

NMA are the North Mississippi Allstars..Jim Dickinson's boys...just a great record...same as the last one with a bit more of a Grateful Dead vibe...Luther is such a great guitar player...maybe the best slide player going...I still think World Boogie is their master work but this one is close...for a long time I felt their records did not measure up to their live shows but no longer...if you like RL Burnside and that type of blues give them a shake..
