This is a really, really tough one. I saw some great live music this year.
10) U2 at Lincoln Financial Field (Philly) (probably the most impressive visuals I've ever seen at a concert)
9) Belle and Sebastian w/Spoon, Andrew Bird and Ex Hex at Merriweather (though the Belle and Sebastian after party in Chicago was more fun than either concert of theirs I saw, and one of the best nights of the year)
8 ) The Pixies at Lincoln Theatre (night 1)
7) X at State Theater
6) The Breeders at Lincoln Theatre
5) The Damned at Baltimore Soundstage
4) Luna at Union Transfer (Philly)
3) Best Coast at Rough Trade (Brooklyn)
2) Air at Strathmore (best-sounding show of the year by a mile)
1) The Feelies at World Cafe Live (Philly)
Honorable mentions: Bob Mould at Black Cat, Face to Face at Rock'n'Roll Hotel, PJ Harvey at Wolf Trap, Social Distortion at the Fillmore (Philly) and Saint Etienne at U Street.
Worst shows: Queens of the Stone Age at Anthem, Book of Love at U Street, Real Estate at Union Transfer.
This was the first year since 1993 where I did not see a single show at the 9:30 Club.

too soon. too many shows still to go.

Negative. No waste for me. See you Thursday.

Another sure sign of my advanced age is I'm struggling with this list, too.
Granted, it was an awful year for shows for me.

Sparks at Le Poisson Rouge, New York
Adia Victoria at Bottom of the Hill, San Francisco
Aldous Harding at DC9
Alex Lahey at DC9
TOPS at Metro Gallery
Big Thief at Ottobar
Royal Headache at Black Cat and at The Regent, Los Angeles (sound was way better in LA)
Gorillaz at Merriweather (actually more like a Damon Albarn show, was quite surprise how much I loved this show)
PJ Harvey in Philly and Richmond
-
Not a lot of shows for me this year. Best were:

PJ Harvey - National

Feist @ Lincoln Theatre, night 1
Feist @ Lincoln Theatre, night 2

Roger Waters @ Verizon Center
John Mayer @ Jiffy Lube Live
Primus @ The Anthem
LCD Soundsystem @ The Anthem, night 2
At The Drive In @ 930 Club
-
Does Primus still bring it awesome live? I was, not, unfortunately a fan of that last release.
-
2017 Top 10 (no order, but certainly weighted):
Green Day/AgainstMe -Verizon, Mar 13
Pixies - Lincoln, May 16
U2 - FedEx, June 20

Ron Gallo - DC9, Nov 20

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers/Peter Wolf- Royal Farms, July 23 Typically, Petty would not make the list as his shows are relegated to an emeritus status--every show is so good and fun. But, ya know.
Rare Essence/E.U./TroubleFunk - Howard, July 3 Oldschool lineup of indigenous DC music
Yes - Wolf Trap, Sep 13 Rare lineup and featuring "90125" era sounds

My best shows of the year (in chronological order):
2017/05/25 Sigur Ros (Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, MD)
2017/06/09 Paul Simon/Sarah McLachlan (Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, MD)
2017/06/20 U2: The Joshua Tree 30th Anniversary Tour/The Lumineers (FedEx Field, Landover, MD)

2017/09/16 Arcade Fire/Preservation Hall Jazz Band (Capital One Arena formerly known as Verizon Center, Washington, DC)
2017/11/03 The Dears (DC9, Washington, DC)
2017/12/30 Spoon (9:30 Club, Washington, DC)
Best individual performances of the year:
1. Ex Hex @ Merriweather (opening act!)
2. The Dears @ DC9
3. Spoon @ 9:30 Club
4. Paul Simon @ Merriweather
5. U2 @ FedEx
The first quarter of 2017 was a wasteland of shows with only The Flaming Lips at the 9:30 Club being at all interesting to me.
I didn't attend a single show at the Black Cat in 2017. That makes me very sad because it has traditionally been one of my favorite venues for intimate shows.
-
Does Primus still bring it awesome live? I was, not, unfortunately a fan of that last release.
They seem to have a theme for each tour in the past decade. They will do a whole album for one set and random songs the next set. This tour, they played all of The Desaturating Seven, so for sure not the tour you would have enjoyed. I could have done without that EP as part of the show as well.
-
In no particular order:
Manchester Orchestra - Fillmore, SS
Parquet Courts - 9:30 and in Baltimore
U2 - Lincoln Financial Field - Philly
Foo Fighters - Anthem
-
Top 10 in no particular order:
The Misfits @ The Forum (LA): Danzig, Jerry Only, Doyle and Dave Lombardo brought it and earned every penny of the $200 I paid for my ticket. Amazing to finally hear all those hits from hell live.
Dag Nasty @ The Observatory (orange county): Dag Nasty's first west coast trip since they reformed, crowd went wild. Incredible show.
Quicksand / No Joy @ Teragram Ballroom (LA): First time seeing Quicksand, hopefully not the last. No Joy as opener was a special treat.
The Weirdos / Midget Handjob @ The Echo (LA): Benefit show for their original guitarist, can't believe how good they were. Keith Morris fronted Midget Handjob was weird and hilarious.
Television @ Teragram Ballroom (LA): 2nd time catching them and they were great. Played all of Marquee Moon.
True Widow @ The Resident (LA): Seeing one of my top 5 favorite bands, 8+ years going, in a sold out venue with like 200 people was awesome.
Tears for Fears @ T-Mobile Arena (Las Vegas): Glad to see they made some lists here. First time seeing them and they still got it.
Helium @ Sinclair (Boston): Best reunion show I saw after the Misfits. Mary Timony is brilliant.
At the drive in / Le Butcherettes @ House of Blues Boston: Made up for their cancelled show with insane energy. Became an instant fan of Le Butcherettes.
PJ Harvey @ House of Blues Boston: Stunningly good show time and time again. She's never not made my top 10 end of the year concert list.
