In the vein of, nkotbie's "Why are we here?" thread, I thought to futher 'enhance' the mutual understanding of each other's tastes(or lack therof) it could be rather friendly to post your personal top 10 favorite bands. Or if you'ld prefer we can guess at them.
For example, I'd say that Mankie's top 10 fave list would look something like this:
mankie:
Bowie
Tom Waits
Bowie
Stranglers
Bowie
Squeeze
Bowie
Bowie
Bowie
Bowie
markie:
The Only Ones
The Fall
The High Strung
GBV
The Only Ones
The Fall
The High Strung
GBV
The Only Ones
The Only Ones
Rhett:
Old 97's
Old 97's
Pernice Bros.
Wilco
J.Cash
Old 97's
Old 97's
Pernice Bros.
Wilco

-------------------------------
So post your top ten fave bands, or guess somebody else's...or both! Have fun. Remember: No Wagering!
-
Well, Mankie's would be more like
Bowie
The Smiths
Mike Scott
Water Boys
Beautiful South
Public Image LTD
4 other british bands trying to play out their careers on XM's Fred

Impressive. I would probably slip the Clash in there, but pretty much right on!

the person's list i'd have a tough time with is pollad's other than gbv making the top 10 somewhere. walkie's as well... kurosawa's would be relatively easy.

You funny, funny people....
While Liz Phair's "Exile" is one of my desert island discs, as is The Posies "Failure", overall they're not top ten material. And Madonna?! Kosmo, just 'cuz I'm going to the concert? That damn Markie, he told you I had Madonna on in my car. It was one song on a mix!! But you certainly got the gist of my list, yessiree bob, you did.
Here's my list -- now this is alltime top ten (actually 11):
Bob Mould
The Replacements
Siouxsie & the Banshees
Foo Fighters
that dog.
Cheap Trick/The Police
Sloan
Jellyfish
Tommy Keene
Judybats
One thing I think is interesting is this list, which I just posted on another site -- it's your 10 favorite *currently active* bands -- so kind of your faves right now.
Good topic....I almost think 10 on this list is harder than Desert Island discs.
Snow Patrol
The Wrens
Sleater-Kinney
Sloan
Scout
Foo Fighters
Fountains of Wayne
Guided by Voices
Washington Social Club
The Decemberists/New Pornographers (tie, I'm cheating)
Dammit: Spoon, Idlewild and Soundtrack of our Lives have to be honorable mentions. Told ya this was hard.
As for doing list for y'all, I'm terrible at that. I know a few fave bands: I'd put
- Lloyd Cole on Brennser's
- couldn't believe Beautiful South wasn't on Mank's first list
- figure Old 97s and Pernice for Rhett (but don't know if they're all time or current faves)
- going with bands with cute hair is about as well as I could do for LuLu
- pollard's got GBV and a bunch of Pitchfork darlings
- Sugartastic El Tee is a band coming to Birchmere I've never heard of
- Lily loves her Damien Rice
- Markie -- The tyde, the Delgados, and some stuff Pollard's given him recently
- Dupek, some prog rock I know by name but am not so sure I know any songs
- thirsty, something loud
- redsock, EXIT CLOV
- Skeeter, a mix of jam and indie and post-punk and...damn that guy loves music
- Bede, GBV and....?
- Kurosawa, all the coolest shit coming out of the British Isles (or music that sounds like it comes from the British Isles but is from Brooklyn)\
-ggw, he seems to go to just about everything and I can't tell if he's liking it or not, but he did see Dylan
multiple times, didn't he....he's old school I'm thinkin'
- Kosmo, no doubt there are five power pop bands I had never heard of before meeting him -- like starbelly, De Novo Dahl, the Shazam, Myracle Brah
- samantha, I GOT BIG TITS and I'M IN HIGH SCHOOL
- flawd, a bunch of bands I have NEVER heard of
- guiny, I have no clue
- sonick, let's all say it together, radiohead
I forgot people, sorry, never thought I was going to do that....

DUDE, he discovered Snow Patrol FIRST! :p
(though I don't know that it means it's in his top ten...)
-
Since I have been branded with the Pitchfork label, much like Sonick with that Spin tattoo on his ass, don't ask me how I know, I have only drank with him once. I will take a shot at my current top 10. I think only 2 or 3 may be loved by Pitchfork.
GBV
Decemberists
Shearwater
Ted Leo
Mountain Goats
Okkervil River
Lucero
Pernice Brothers
Microphones
Superdrag
Ones that would be on an all time list but are not in high favor right now due to previous over listening:
Wilco
Neutral Milk Hotel
Son Volt/Jay Farrar
Jayhawks
Modest Mouse
Jeff Buckley
Built to Spill
Luna
Ones that may be on it soon:
Beta Band
Von Bondies
Of Montreal
Thermals
-
Nirvana
Mindless Self Indulgence
Tomahawk
Deftones
Nelly furtado
Honorable mention: The Melvins
-
Too funny...I was going to say that Snow Patrol would be on your current fave list. Snow Patrol might show up on mine, which I hear I have to thank someone for...Wondering if it is on his...(sorry for the run-on).

Hank Williams
Wilco
BR549
Billie Holiday
the Smiths
Pernice Brothers
Beulah
Jason and the Scorchers
Dwight Yoakam
...maybe more reflective of what I've been listening to lately
Too hard to name anyone else's. All the ones I would have attempted have already been done.

Originally posted by Bagalicious Tangster:

Despite the fact that The Dead are at the top of my list, I'm not really a fan of "jam bands".
The Grateful Dead
R.E.M.
Ramones
Psychedelic Furs
The Slickee Boys
David Bowie
X
Husker Du
The Rolling Stones
Bob Dylan
It varies depending on my mood, but this is pretty accurate. The Grateful Dead and REM are miles above the rest.
-
Fave all time in no order:
Replacements
Stooges
Husker Du
Afghan Whigs
Misfits
Beatles
Bowie
Modern Lovers
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Radiohead
...but as with the top 5 album thread that's off the top of my head and I'd probably answer a little different an hour from now.
-
Without putting too much thought into it, here's my initial 10 best, in no specific order.
Bowie
Beautiful South/Housemartins
Stranglers
Ian Dury and the Blockheads
Solas
Waterboys
Squeeze
Smiths/Moz
Joy Division/New Order
Stone Roses
I'm sure if I spent a little time I may tweak it a bit, but that's damn close.
-
ok, here are mine:
gbv
rem
american analog set
nick cave and the bad seeds
built to spill
pavement
pink floyd
spiritualized
low
sisters of mercy
-
These are all time faves. My major criteria is artists with a catalog of work including more than just one great album:
Depeche Mode
the Smiths
Catherine Wheel
Trembling Blue Stars
Magnetic Fields
Placebo
Portishead
PJ Harvey
Pet Shop Boys/Erasure (can I do that?)
James
-
That's hilarious.
The first time I heard Getz/Gilberto I didn't know what to make of it. It was so quiet. The girl I was dating at the time, who played it for me, probably wanted to make out to something listenable.
Originally posted by Bagalicious Tangster:

It took me awhile to think of ten.
Dylan
Bob Marley
Tragically Hip
Sleater-Kinney
Fugazi
The Wrens
Superdrag
Grateful Dead
Segovia
Minutemen
-
My top three:
Rupert Holmes
Crack the Sky
Menudo
-
Thirsty:
Sonic Youth
Breeders
Pixies
Lime Spiders
Finn Bros.
Midnight Oil
Paul Kelly & The Coloured Girls
Ramones
Mental As Anything
Black Sabbath
-
Gotta say, this is super fun. I'm listening to Superdrag now because they're on a list or two. Great, great stuff.
Also, I think so many of the lists are really good, and I find that every single list has at least a couple bands I think are great as well. Really fascinating....
That's the only problem with the lists, there are lots of bands I LOVE that can't make it up there.
-
What about the great Baltimore band Laughing Colors?

That's not the list of the thirsty I know....there's no obscure Brazillian band on it.
-
I've done some thinking...and while this isn't 100% correct, my of the moment top ten in no particular order:
Sigur Ros
REM
Live - Throwing Copper or earlier only
Idlewild
Delgados
Pixies (more a re-discovery)
The Go-Gos
Explosions in the Sky
Postal Service
And of course, Exit Clov

I'll put it this way...if their current talents continue to develop, they'll still be in my top ten when I'm old and incontinent.

Phaser - Yes!
Good job! With that said, I would go crazy trying to write one of these up for myself. Would have to put Roxy Music and early Eno on there somewhere. Maybe Swervedriver, Ride, Catherine Wheel, Joy Division, Doves, Electronic (except only one album is that fantastic to me), Monster Movie, Highspire (I LOVE their album,.....like I said. It's just impossible!
