Don't know if this has been done, but reading Dupek's thread got me interested in a topic I've been studying up lately. I would would like to see a list narrowed down thusly: NO DOCUMENTARIES, NO STRICT BIO FLICKS (like Ray would be out but something semi-autobio like Almost Famous would be acceptable or something like Walk the Line that focuses only on a part of someone's story would be ok), NO CONCERT FLICKS.
that said, here's nine. Pass the quiche...
Hard Day's Night
Rock and Roll High School
Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains
Garage Days
That Thing You Do
Leningrad Cowboys Go to America
Bandwagon
I Wanna Hold Your Hand
This Is Spinal Tap
-
does this one count?

-
What's that one where Kiss is running around trying to solve a mystery in an amusement park? It's so heinous it's almost good.
OK maybe not.
-
the song remains the same (not strictly a concert flick, what with the gangster stuff and all the naked hill-frolicking)
the wall
-
Personally, I think Oliver Stone's "The Doors" is pretty good.

24 Hour Party People

and i know you said no documentaries ... but
Don't Look Back,
Gimme Shelter, and
Monterey Pop
HAVE to be mentioned when you're talking about all-time rock movies

The Last Waltz
I saw Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park on TV (perhaps captain 20 was involved?) when I was about 6. It blew my freaking mind. It inspired me to dress up as Gene Simmons that Halloween (in a boxed costume I bought at People's) and won scariest at my neighborhood party.
For the record I saw Sgt. Peppers (w/ Bee Gees and Frampton) when I was about 7 . . . and thought it was fantastic

I don't understand your flea-brained criteria. Explain to me how Ray is out, but Walk The Line is OK?

I love that movie. There are a ton of actors in it that went on to be pretty big stars.
And I can't belive no one has mentioned Rocky Horror Picture Show.
-
Didn't read the legal mumbo jumbo that would disqualify The Last Waltz. So I'll add
Eddie and the Cruisers
No one's mentioned Satisfaction.
-
perhaps my criteria was a bit confused. NO BIOS. No Ray, no Walk the Line, no American Hot Wax, no Great Balls of Fire, no, um, Freddie Mercury the Untold Story.
-
Cool topic. I love me some RAWK movies.
In the other thread I had:
American Graffiti
A Hard Days Night
The Commitments
This Is Spinal Tap
-
Heavy Metal Parking Lot

-
Head
Decline of Western Civilization

well, this thread has completely ignored your qualifications :D
i'll try to get it back on track:
SLC Punk
-
Suburbia!
-
I'm still a bit fuzzy about your line of demarcation so I'll leave out a couple I may have included otherwise.
Hard Day's Night
Absolute Beginners
Rock and Roll High School
This Is Spinal Tap
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Hairspray
Jailhouse Rock wasn't bad though I'm not an Elvis fan.

If you're thinking of this one from 84, man what a great flick. Hadn't thought of that one in a long time. The ending sure was a shocker.

Whats not love about this one
Stephen Rea, Bill Nighy, Timothy Spall, and Jimmy Nail play aging 70s rockers attempting to make a come back. With Billy Connolly as their roadie...
And it meets the laws that all British Movies must among other things have Timothy Spall in it...

Performance. That movie oozes rock n roll style. Plus, it's influenced so many bands (especially British ones, Primal Scream, Suede, Happy Mondays, etc.) and...ummm...Courtney Love.
Also, it may contain the first music video. It's absolutely brilliant. Maybe my favorite film ever.

The majority of mine are on your nine list. Since the above is eligible (as is Almost Famous), then High Fidelity, Empire Records and an HM to Pump Up The Volume should also be considered! :D

the winner, hands down...game over!
The Beatles movies were complete and utter shyte, right in line with Elvis and Cliff Richards movies.... Seriously.
Velvet Goldmine and Still Crazy are good ones.
-
Heavy Metal Parking Lot is by far the best rock movie ever.
EVER!
-
I was actually entertained by that Rockstar movie with Marky Mark and Jennifer Anniston.
-
Found Breaking Glass on DVD, too bad doesn't play well on my player.
Rude Boy
The Blind Eye Sees All
What about the Chuck Berry birthday party one with Keith Richards. That should be allowed just for the Keith laugh-coughing

Most rock films are pretentious. They're made for the sole purpose of making Robert Plant's dick look big. This is totally the opposite. Within the first half hour we're made to look complete idiots.

...actually had a decent plot too, and starred the guy from THAT'S MY BUSH.

It's 1980. Can't you afford a fucking haircut?
If there's any A&R reps in the audience, go die.
