Aaron Hernández
A childhood friend of mine was on the legal team that just got him acquitted in the second trial and she is absolutely stunned. Also in Mar A Lago, but stunned while there.

He died an innocent man.

Quote
n the state of Massachusetts, Hernandez technically died an innocent man due to the legal principle of abatement ab initio, where if a person dies and has not exhausted all legal appeals, the case reverts to its status at the beginning; so the person becomes innocent. Hernandez had an appeal pending for his 2014 conviction in the murder of Odin Lloyd.[92]

Lots of speculation that this gets his family his NFL pension/signing bonus now.

I'm not 100% sure. Obviously the lack of a technical criminal conviction doesn't shield his estate from civil charges from victim's families but pensions generally are not touchable.

The Patriots withheld $3.25 million of his signing bonus and $2.5 million of his guaranteed base salary.  They withheld it because per the CBA, they have the right if he is convicted of a crime.  If his convictions are vacated, the families lawyers will ask that the money be reinstated.

This will end with a settlement somewhere less than that $5 million number, but probably more than $1m.

Thank you for clarifying this isn't a pension issue but a contractual one.

My apologies for not including my standard "/I am not a lawyer" proviso.
