This was a very good show from start to finish. I was pleasantly surprised by (The Sounds of) Kaleidoscope. They started very strong. After a while, their sound wore a little thin, but, overall, very good. Their songs could use a few more hooks, I think. I might have liked Kaleidoscope more than Mazarin even. Mazarin played exceptionally well, but I didn't care for the lead singer's vocals much. They finished their set really strong though. I was getting kind of tired during Mazarin, but Rogue Wave woke me up immediately. Excellent vocals, nice sound, played very well, and they looked like they were having fun. I'm their newest fan.

i'm glad you had a good time!

at approximately 7:35 last night, at the chance of freezing rain, my parents decided that i couldn't go.  i just got straight a's, and i'm kind of pissed that i work so hard and they still don't let me do the one thing that i like to do.  whatever.  i'll be at the black cat in two weeks, whether they like it or not.  this is starting to get ridiculous.

k'scope was very good, as always. this was an especially noisy set. most of their songs do have hooks, they just decided to focus on the noise for whatever reason last nite.

i was a bit disappointed w/mazarin. i really like their most recent record, but it just seemed a bit flat last nite. i know they had to cancel their previous two performances due to a death, so that could be a pretty good explanation. before their last couple songs the lead singer said something along the lines of "here's the part where we get noisier" and those sounded pretty good. but i thought that sounds of did the same sort of thing, just a bit better.

i didn't stick around for rogue wave. saw them open for ac "alfred e." newman (good one, rhett) last summer and felt that seeing them once was enough. i mean, they're ok, it's pleasant and inoffensive and mildly sentimental. i thought the city paper did a pretty good job with them in its review this week. lord knows there are plenty worse bands, but i wanted to watch the end of the clippers/cavs game.

That sucks.  I was actually looking forward to hearing about the show from you, since you were so psyched, even though I'm not a Rogue Wave fan (have listened, don't really enjoy them).  But in reading this thread throughout the week, I had really hoped you would have a good time.

On the big picture bright side - which sucks to think about in the moment, but is true - you have many more years ahead of you to see shows.  When you're old and ragged like many of us, these times you're experiencing now will just be cocktail party chatter ("When I was 15, my parents wouldn't even let me....").

For anyone who occasionally feels nostalgic about their teenage years, this sentence is something to reflect upon!

You're 15.  I think it's kind of ridiculous that you apparently strive for straight A's simply as a bargaining tactic with your parents.  Sorry, I know that's preachy, but I find your rants about what you have a 'right' to do, like staying out after 1:00 a.m. on a Saturday night, a bit too much.  I know I've said it before -- I can empathize, I've always been a huge music fan, but you have YEARS and YEARS and HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of shows to see.

The straight A's, hopefully, will be most useful in allowing you to get in to the college of your choice.

i'm not striving for the straight a's as a bargaining tactic...that happened ONCE (at my parents request    ).  i strive to get the best grades possible, because i kind of want to go to Brown.  additionally, it makes my mom really, really happy when i get straight A's.  overall, i try so hard in school to please my parents, and i'm not a bad kid.  what bothers me is the fact that i am doing, for them, what they want me to do; yet they won't just let me go to shows.  make sense?  i know it's not the end of the world, and i realize that RW will be back...i just sometimes feel like i bust my butt for no reason whatsoever.  i really wasn't trying to rant...

I understand where you're coming from, but doing well in school is not reason enough for parents to let a 'good kid' do things which may be unsafe or not age appropriate.

yay!  well let's hope it's on a friday or saturday night, then.

haven't we already established, also, that it is not unsafe?

Safe in terms of being shot outside the 9:30 Club or Black Cat is one thing.  Wanting my 15-year old down on 14th Street at 1:30 in the morning is another...
