Ridge Runner for the views and the beers are ok. Brothers for the best beers.  Unfortunately, the mountains have not honed the craft of excellent beers, just yet.

Also, hopslam just hit my beer shoppe.

Asheville, NC: if you're going to hit up one brewery there it should be . . .

It depends on what you're looking for.

I liked New Belgium for the "scene." Great tour with good amount of free beer. Nice river views from the tasting room. Large outdoor lawn with food trucks to play on with your kids or dogs or significant other.

I liked Wicked Weed Funkatorium for the beers (almost all sours, if that's not your bag, this is not your place), though some would now object because they've been bought by AB-Inbev. I liked WW Funkatorium a lot more than their main Wicked Weed brewpub (which features their whole range of beers though only one or two sours at a time)....much more relaxed atmosphere at the Funkatorium.

And Burial for their hoppy beers, though they're probably not in the same league as the Veil (I didn't actually go there, but have had some of their beers.)

Pisgah Brewing over in Pisgah was fun if you're into watching open mic Grateful Dead cover bands and making fun of hippies (they also have a larger concert area featuring nationally touring bands, bookings tend toward the jammy.)

Some people rave about Sierra Nevada over in Mills River, but I found the atmosphere too sterile and palatial.

And Fonta Flora Brewing, in Morganton, which may or may not be on the drive to Asheville, was a very nice stop off place. Laid back vibe and excellent beers.

I have my eye on Alewerks Bitter Valentine. First time ever in four packs of cans. Then again, I have so much Aslin and Veil in my fridge I should probably skip it.

Can you buy beer to take home at these, or are they strictly tasting events? Lawson's will be there and those tickets are cheaper than a trip to VT.

Strictly tasting... however, you could sit in front of the Lawsons table for the entire night if you wanted.

Additionally, there's probably a pretty good chance Lawsons will host an event in DC that week if you want to see Space.

Yay! It was touch and go there for a while, but looks like I'm headed to Portland next week with a mostly empty suitcase, with a side trip to the coast for a day.

ME or OR?

Work related trip to OR. Tacking on an extra self day to drive to the coast.

Tentative beer related stops, time permitting:

Great Notion
Upright
Cascade
Hair of the Dog
de Garde
Pelican
maybe Laurelwood at PDX ariport if I'm hungry/thirsty after being on two planes
Apex
Beer Mongers

Any must hit places I'm missing? Any food recommendations (that may or may not also have good beer?)

also got my first growler from pen druid.  something called Jupiter, a wild double ipa.  it was super cloudy and had a strange bitterness to the ipaness of it, so i thought it was good, but not their awesomeness best.
