To prove that I can even be snarky on this thread...Beer Madness is back in the Washington Post...

The ?experts? are a pastry chef, a mixologist (black and tan anyone?), a chef at a wine bar, a wine sommelier and a beer writer. How does that constitute a group of ?experts??

The readers, other than the old Navy geezer (who sounds like a Safeway beer shopper), actually sound like they would have some expertise based on their favorite beers. It?s almost like they asked the readers their three favorite beers, and the old guy said ?Flying Dog, Dogfish, and New Belgium? and they had to change the question they printed (to favorite brewery) to fit his answers.

I also fail to see how 26, 28, 30, 64, and 70 are a good representation of the ages of the craft beer drinking population. Or the over 21 population in general (unless a good number of those whose ages were'nt given are in the 31-60 range).

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/all-we-can-eat/post/meet-the-beer-madness-judges/2012/02/24/gIQA3g35dR_blog.html

THE EXPERTS
Agnes Chin is the pastry chef at Palena in Cleveland Park.
Gina Chersevani is a mixologist and founding member of the DC Craft Bartenders Guild.
Rob Weland is executive chef at Cork Wine Bar in Logan Circle.
Returning judge Kat Bangs, 28, is sommelier at Komi in Dupont Circle.
Greg Kitsock is The Post?s Beer columnist. He is editor of Mid-Atlantic Brewing News.
THE READERS
Jim Munsterman, 70, is a retired Naval aviator and part-time marketing consultant. He lives in Chantilly. His entry:
Seventy year young retired Naval Aviator enjoys a variety of craft beers; his expertise and passion are testified to by the gossip and admiration of the technicians who weekly collect his frequently full recycling container ? mostly dark bottles and occasional cans.
His three favorite breweries: Flying Dog; Dogfish Head; New Belgium.
Halley Fehner, 26, is a historian at History Associates Inc. She lives in Rockville. Her entry:
SWF seeking good craft beer, preferably tall, dark, and strong enough to make me lightheaded when we?re together.
Her three favorite beers: Russian River Supplication; Goose Island Bourbon County Stout; Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale.
Samantha Polinik , 30, is an architect apprentice. She lives in Columbia Heights. Her entry:
Before moving back to DC for the ever-increasing craft-brew culture (and a job opportunity), I lived in Portland, Oregon, for two and a half years, where in addition to permanently losing my ability to absorb sunlight, I frequently enjoyed many a craft brew, while attempting to explain sarcasm to the locals.
Her three favorite beers: Ninkasi (Total Domination IPA); Dogfish Head Chicory Stout; tie (sorry sorry) McMenamin Brothers Ruby Ale and Copacetic IPA (Amnesia Brewing Co.).
U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), 64, is co-chairman of the Small Brewers Caucus. His entry:
The only effective role I have in the minority is my co-chairmanship of the Small Brewers Caucus because beer is food and that?s the most bipartisan agreement around Washington, D.C., these days.
His three favorite beers: Ninkasi Tricerahops Double IPA; Brooklyn Brewery Sorachi Ace; Deschutes Black Butte Porter.

i think y'all getting your overly-PC underwear in a knot over a poor choice of words.  they are not talking about socio-economic 1-percenters, they're talking about the 1% of beer drinkers who have uncommon tastes.  what percentage regularly drinks lambics?  i wouldn't be surprised if it's around 1%.  ergo, if you are a lambic producer you're targetting that 1%.

Sometimes the cost of living just blows my mind in this damn city. In Pittsburgh this weekend and this "hop cellar" had $4 bottles of Hopslam.

Home of my favorite pizza/beer place, favorite gelato place, and an underused playground to take the kid to and sober up in before driving (a straight shot) home to the VA burbs. What's not to love?  :)

Home of my favorite pizza/beer place, favorite gelato place, and an underused playground to take the kid to and sober up in before driving (a straight shot) home to the VA burbs. What's not to love?  :)

Pizza Paradiso in Georgetown had Hopslam on draft for $4 and it lasted 2+ days.

But that means hanging out in Georgetown.

^^drives drunk with child in the car^^  :o :o :o

j/k... kind of.
