Looks like someone sold you some mediocre beer. Other than their excellent orange whip IPA, i've found all their beers to be mediocre.

http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/mad-fox-diabolik-belgian-strong-ale/136815/

so i'm drinking a beer from the mad fox brewery near here in falls chuch, va... diabolik.. tapped today.. i took my growler to take advantage of the half price deal

i just can't drink this beer. .. what am i doing wrong or what is the deal... i feel like my upper chest has this big bubble pushing up on it or something if that makes any sense..

i don't mind the taste just don't know what i should have trouble drinking a beer?

HELP

signed,
troubled and pained beer drinker in arlington

not talking about the taste dude...talking about having your esophagus almost swell shut..

i've had this happen before with some beers...

for the record i really like the mad fox place...great burgers... and some of their beers are up my alley (defender american pale ale for example)

does this often happen with belgian-style beers?

diabolik, a belgian strong, will have a higher content of phenols and esters, mostly due to the yeast used.  a place like mad fox may let more yeast sediment stay in there beer.  i doubt they filtered this, since the cloudy color is often preferred with belgian styles. you're likely drinking a higher content of phenols, esters, and yeast in this beer.

so for health effects...

an allergy to the esters, or ethyl acetate, will cause digestive issues.  probably not your issue.

for phenols... there's probably a book to write about phenols and their potential effects.  i'd imagine your issue lies with the high phenol content, but then again, you ingest plenty of phenols from other sources (fruits, vegetables, etc).

i'm not incredibly well-versed in the health effects of beer, but i'd steer clear of the belgians.  or watch the effects closely.

yeah, i was thinking the same thing - reaction/allergy to the yeast or its by-products.

do you drink belgian beers regularly?  do they have this effect on you?

If the beers below impress you, then by all mean go.

But if you:

a. detest crowds of drunk mainstream twentysomethings or
b. have better beer in your basement

then don't go.

Here are some of the beers that the breweries are bringing...
Smuttynose: Old Brown Dog, Finest Kind IPA
Victory: Headwaters Pale Ale, SwingSessions Saison
Devils Backbone: Vienna, Eight Point, Congo, Schwartz Bier
Troegs: Perpetual IPA, Troegenator Doublebock, Dreamweaver, Wheat, Hopback Amber
Widmer: Pitch Black, O'Reilly Rotator, Hef, Columbia Commons
Redhook: Pilsner, Audible, Longhammer
Kona: Koko Brown, Longboard, Firerock
Omission: Lager, Pale Ale
Goose Island: Summertime, Honkers
Shock Top: Lemon Shandy, Apple Crisp
Bold Rock Cider: VA Apple, VA Draft
Boulder Beer: Hazed and Infused, Mojo, Sweaty Betty

Looking at that list gave me the realization inBev has made it nice to pick up decent beers during a Wizards/Caps game at VC.
Redhook, Kona, Goose Island, Kona, Shock Top are all on draft.
Wasn't long ago it was just Bud/Coors/Miller.
Now you can also get inBev Belgium selections - Leffe, Hoegaarden, Stella Artois, etc.

I don't drink Belgians too much.

This Diabolik doesn't work with me.. I must be allergic to something in it..

another upcoming DC brewery: Atlas Brew Works

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/youngandhungry/2012/12/10/d-c-s-next-brewery-atlas-brew-works/

http://dcist.com/2012/12/atlas_brew_works_coming_to_northeas.php

I drive by this every day on my way to work and have been checking it out.  It seems to be coming along pretty nicely.  Right around the corner from the distillery that opened a few months back and really not far from DC Brau; strange to think we didn't have any of this stuff in DC not long ago.

Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to it, especially if they do make a foray into sour beers.

Conservatives and liberals drink different beer
The new science of ideology extends to consumer choices, showing how unconscious our political viewpoints are
