ok.  how long can I let it sit, do you think, to have it still taste good?  month, tops?  less?

it is good now, and it will be good in 3 years.  however, it will be different.

drink now: more lychee and sharp sourness.
drink later: more funk, less fruit.

so it depends what you want.  personally, i like my fruited sours on the fresh side.  the brewer went through all that trouble of getting fruit in there, so why not enjoy the fruit flavors and aromas while they are center stage.  if i'm going to age a sour i'll pick an un-fruited one, but that's just me.  some people like the more integrated character of an aged fruited sour, other say the fruit take on a jam-like quality, blah blah blah.

thanks to the live bugs in the bottle (most notably brettanomyces), unpasteurized sours can be aged for years and years.  i have some belgian sours that have "best before" dates 10 years after the bottling date.  you read stories of uber-collectors drinking 30 year old sours.

pilsners from 15 years ago have little in common with today's pilsners from californian craft breweries (like lagunitas).  they're much hoppier now.

I tried Wicked Weed's Oblivion and loved it.

Also their mango/guava gose. Pretty great as well.

Got a growler of Freak of Nature and loved it
also the 6er of the Napoleon complex was pretty darn good too

They also had Amorous ...but wasn't going to drop $20 for 500ml (at least not that night :) )

that gose I was eyeing up, but didn't get it it...I'm sure they are all gone now
got to get that WW when you see it, as it's gone in hours
but looks like the DMV will be getting regular tap and bottle deliveries now!

Did try an interesting Brown Ale last night from Center of the Universe called Wort Share
very good stuff, might go back and get a growler of that
I normally don't really like the brown ales, but this one changed my mind

Wait a sec.....Backwoods is out? Late to the party again, I guess. Guess that explains why I've never seen it on a shelf.

If you still have a 15-year old pilsener, you should really just throw it out.

It's just hitting stores this week, along with Harvest Ale. You should be able to find some in VA. Don't know if it's hit anywhere in DC yet, but it will.

Thanks for the tip. I presume these sell but not at a KBS-level frenzy?

not even close, in my experience.  it hangs around for a few weeks.

We did three side by sides over the weekend:

1. "The Battle of Michigan"

Founders KBS 2015 vs Bells Black Note 2014
Food pairing: brie, dark chocolate, trail mix
Verdict: Bells 1, Founders 1
Comments: At various points, my wife said Bells was "roastier", "more boozy", and "more mellow" Not sure if all those things are possible at same time, but at any rate she preferred it. She thought the KBS tasted "chemically". I preferred the KBS.

2. "The Battle of the Troegs"

Troegs Troegenator vs. Troegs Barrel Aged Troegenator
Food Pairing: Shit, I'm drawing a blank, but it was something my wife made and it was damn good.
Verdict: Regular 2, Barrel Aged 0
Comments: Regular paired best with meal, whereas barrel aged was too boozy and one dimensional

3. "The Battle of Lagunitas"

Lagunitas Sucks vs Lagunitas Born Yesterday
Food paring: mushroom quesadillas
Verdict: Born Yesterday 2, Sucks 0
Comments: Sucks is good, but Born Yesterday is phenomenal

From my experience, I wouldn't count on it being around in a few weeks, but not KBS level for sure.

Teleworking today, I may have to go pick up a four pack...though good lord I still have some left from last year.

I know a shop, in Winchester Virginia, that has tons of it. Harvest and Backwoods Bastard.

Yeah, I know.

May resort to that. Struck out in McLean at lunch.

Mr. Crow, I'd advise going to Rodmans, McGruders, or Conn Ave Liquor to score any of your beer needs. Most of the beers you tend to mention are usually easily found at any of those shops and not deep into the city for us MoCo folk.
