Saturday I went to Philly to catch the Feelies do a set that they dedicated to the memory of Jonathan Demme and, as always, it was transcendent. The Feelies are my favorite live band. There's really nobody that I enjoy seeing in concert more. The new songs were fantastic, and they didn't do a single cover song until the second encore. I'm very happy I went up for that one...I'm not sure I'll get to see them again this year, but here's hoping.

basla on bass is a treat and chad is hilarious.
so glad he's with us.

I came in the middle of their set.  Very interesting.  What was the joke about Basla?  Did I miss something or is it an ongoing joke?

Yeah...i think it was the 4th or 5th time I've seen them at World Cafe Live. The sound in that venue is so darn good. They played the best version of "Slipping (Into Something") I've ever seen because the venue had some crazy good psychedelic lights to go with the music...it was some real Velvet Underground shit. Totally amazing.

i didn't catch the names of the keyboard or drummer, but that was some 'nuther planet playing and musicianship.

sigh, I need to do a better job of keeping up to date on shows, I absolutely would've gone up to Philly for that show if I had known about it.... glad it was great!!

Not sure if you're on Facebook, but that's always a good place to keep track. They tend to create an event page for each show they do. That's how I found out about their 40th anniversary shows last year. And I'm so glad I went to that one. It was really special.

I am on FB, but I've been on a bit of sabbatical from there, just got out of the habit of checking it over the last couple of months.... also, the Feelies have only tended to do a couple of weekends of shows a year, so since they're doing a weekend in NYC in May, it didn't occur to me that they'd come up and play another weekend so close to that... ah well, my bad for not being more vigilant about keeping track.....

apparently arto gave eveyone in the band nicknames and basla's was "botulism" which doesn't seem fair and they in turn gave him "white man" because he is the only one on the tour.
you had to be there, i guess.
anyway, beauty pill's LPs and EPs are very fine musically, well-recorded, beautifully packaged and worth a listen.

Weekend Update (duplicative of my show conflict post)

Marti Jones artwork is cool, Marti and Don were present, chatting with folks, didnt interrupt with my star- struckedness
Tasty Burger - misheard my veggie cheeseburger order with a bacon cheeseburger order, so had to redo, but was good despite the wait
Waxahatchee - I liked a couple of her songs, sound over by the stage, stage right was way too bass heavy for me, moved to the other side for
New Pornos, who were good, but without Dan, and Dan it turns out is more important to me than I thought. Left after Sweet Talk to see
Bob Mould, and was able to see 7 or 8 songs, and enjoyed, and that was enough for me and my old ears, chatted with Bagley and left with another friend to try to see Split Single at Comet
But by the time we arrived, Split Single was over, and we were tired so called it a night, and then Saturday Night went to
Steve Wynn at Club603 in Baltimore, which is a great house show place I have now been to 4 times in the past 5 months. Steve was great (solo electric), and chatted with us afterwards for awhile. I recommend the venue, sort of regardless of who is playing, its just a really cool place to see a show.

anyway, beauty pill's LPs and EPs are very fine musically, well-recorded, beautifully packaged and worth a listen.

Beauty Pill is one of my all-time favorite DC bands.  Their records are wonderful and they're always entertaining to see live.  The most un-Dischord like band ever on Dischord.  If you get a chance to see them, do it, because they don't play very often.

Redd Kross last night was very loud.  Good show, but loud.  I go to a lot of shows, this one was louder than all the rest of them.

Damn, Shonen Knife and Red Kross were two shows I wanted to see and then just spaced on them.

Interesting, I didn't think they were any louder than other shows at the Backstage (of course I was using earplugs so maybe I can't really judge).  I wish they had done the Monsanto album first and then the 'hits' - a couple of those songs dragged a bit - 'Ann' and 'Saviour Machine' specifically.  Somehow, I missed that Dale Crover would be drumming for this tour, so that was a nice surprise.  He was awesome.  Bonus for playing their first EP for the encore.

How about the openers, Foul Swoops?  There were really good as well.

I had earlplugs in for sure. i think that you are right, that the sound was normal-ish for the room. I remember now that at some othershows there I have stood close to the stage to get sound more from the monitors from the PA because the PA is so loud.
