I enjoyed the Tweedy show last night. His "tweedy" band is essentially Wilco-light, but I liked at least 3/4ths of the songs and it's always a treat to hear solo acoustic Tweedy.

I enjoyed it...but it wasn't very satisfying
The new songs really didn't grab me at all....and believe me I wanted them to work

I did like that he played 'please tell my brothers' by Golden Smog and Via Chicago
finishing with an unamplified rendition of 'missunderstood' was pretty sweet too

His son seemed solid as a drummer, but couldn't hold a water faucet to Glenn Kotche

Way back in 99, when I both time and money to burn, I flew to Chicago to see one of his solo acoustic shows he did at the Lounge Ax.
That was really one of the best musical experiences I've ever had in a club

At that time he hadn't even finished recording SummerTeeth.
But we got treated to about 6+ songs that ended up on ST and all these other UT/GS/Mermaid Ave/Wilco classics.
He even threw in some covers of Big Star (13) and Henry & the H Bombs
as well as old traditionals like 'auld triangle' and 'James alley blues'

Later that year he did a few more of these and he debuted a bunch that would appear on YFH

at the time I traded tapes (remember those) and those were cherished my collection.  Just came across this JT@LoungeAX
looking forward to listening to that later

Just found a great article about  Jeff and the Ax

To be clear, last night wasn't even close to that experience.

oh...this also made me chuckle

like I said, seemed very Wilco-light... might as well just have a killer band like Wilco backing you vs. a few amateurs that are trying to make noisey guitar licks like Nels. I liked the last half of songs vs. the first four or five.

Some of the tracks reminded me of the early 2000's b-sides like Cars Can't Escape, More Like the Moon, Handshake Drugs (before it was released), etc.

It was enough of a fix to not see Wilco for a few more years.

Tweedy has sucked songwriting-wise since he got rid of Jay Bennett(RIP)... is it related to Jay or is it simply that his creative well ran dry? Impossible to say.. most songwriters only have about a 10 year period of peak songwriting..
