so for decades the term "African americans" was used.. now it seems to be "blacks"... is this the case?

There was some moron on Fox Soccer over the weekend taking about Terry's racist comments to Anton Ferdinand. He referred to Black English players as "African Americans" HUH???

'African American' is a load of bollocks. As long as I'm 'white' and not 'European American' I will continue to use 'black' not 'African American'...it's all moot anyway because blacks like to use the oh-so-offensive term 'N-word' as a term of endearment to each other.

Why can't blacks and/or African Americans decide for themselves as to how they prefer to be identified? What business is it of yours as to how they identify each other?

EDIT:  apparently african-american only refers to the USA portion of America, learn something new every day.

I think they have .....

This came up in conversation at my workplace recently. It was during a lunch celebrating 'Black History Month' (not African American History Month BTW) The general consencious amongst the black staff was "black" is just fine. African American was seen to be a little silly and overly-pc.

hmmm..yes that is the sense I'm getting... very strange as using "black" was not pc for a long time...

hispanics I think may also be shifting... the term hispanic is of course retarded as it really means from Spain/Portugal.. anyways I am betting preferred term will one day be Latino which is what it should always have been and was slated to be originally until some bureaucrat in the 1970s went with hispanic for government purposes..

latino comes from the word "latin" so it still applies to Spain/Portugal... and worse yet, it includes france, italy, romania, etc.  so latino is even "more wrong" than hispanic.

I can't tell if a few folks are being ironic or just slightly ignorant? Apologies if it's the former and not the latter.

But, y'all do realize there isn't a collective 'They' with black folks just like there isn't for white folks? 'They' don't get together and decide to change things up with the nomenclature.

In reality, all sorts of people (usually with agendas) change the meaning of words/labels. This in turn leads to a change in the way some people want to be identified.

For example, some conservatives have endlessly flagellated the word 'liberal' from it's actual meaning - 'a political ideology that advocates free markets, limited government, constitutionalism, rule of law, due process, and individual liberties' to 'DERP, COMMUNIST, main-stream-media-employed, derp, unpatriotic, Socialist, government entitled leech, enviro-nitwit!'

How do you upset the set up? Evolve and modify your identity ... Progressive!

nonesense... the reason LATINO works is because people from Latin America are called "LATINOAMERICANOS"... since most hispanics oh say 99% are from Latin America the term Latino is much better than hispanic which really refers to the hispanic peninsula...

an overwhelming percentage of hispanics have zero connection to Spain and Portugal other than linguistic

you can be a Latin American whose family is from originally from poland,, lithuania and italy and yet in the US you are termed a "hispanic"

It is totally retarded. Latino makes way more sense.

Why make any kind of racial reference at all?

Why let the PC 'theys' dictate what one must call any group, providing it's all said with respect? Honestly, I completely detest the whole PC mentality. It's nothing but censorship and brainwashing.

Maybe if you go back far enough in my lineage, you will probably find a few strains from the Caucasus area, but I'm not aware of it. Yet, I must check off (no pun intended) Caucasian when I fill out forms. Big effing deal! I don't care at all. There was a reason for the origin of the word for my category and it's nothing negative. In fact, when speaking of myself, I just say that I'm a European Mutt who happens to also be American. It so easily covers all of the many different European drops of blood that I'm aware of in my lineage. Proud of every single drop and even wish that I knew of more.

Personally, I don't get hung up on any of the different names providing that they are used respectfully. In my eyes, anyone who gets bent out of shape with distinct names like that is, well, just bent.

in any case, I'm seeing the term blacks used more and more.. and african americans less and less.. sorry if that reality bothers people.
