Right.  1987.  My point exactly.  And you know how far behind the times Europe is....I bet they still call them discos.  When did you become European Mr. American Grassroots music festival?

Tricky in Sept. 99 wasn't too great either. I walked out of that one.

Tricky in January '97 (didn't see it at 9:30 though), w/ Martina, shortly after the release of Pre-millenium Tension was an awesome show.

MANY clubs and especially a one-off party (I wont say rave) had been charging $40 for admission.  Of course, many of those were all night long with many DJs.
I think Nation charges like $20 on friday nights. which is ironically the same price for a long island iced tea there!

$40 seems reasonable for Fatboy though, since someone has to pay for his big bag of coke!

Keep in mind for these "one-off parties" that they're working with just an open space. Good example is UltraWorld. It was held at the DC Armory. So charging someone $40 to "just see someone play records" isn't exactly true. There's no lighting or sound system and those cost someone some money which needs to be made back. Not to mention paying the DJs to spin and rental of the space.

speaking of the vines:

Australia's Vines, Mentally Exhausted, Scrap Tour

Wed Jun 9, 6:48 PM ET  Add Entertainment - Reuters to My Yahoo!

 By Jonathan Cohen

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Australian rock band the Vines, who have gained a reputation for delivering erratic performances, have backed out of their planned support spot on Incubus' summer North American tour, citing "mental and physical exhaustion."

The band was thrust into disarray following a recent performance for a Sydney radio station, when bassist Patrick Matthews walked out following the first song. A full show the next evening was promptly canceled.

"The decision has been made to take a break to deal with the mental and physical exhaustion issues the band currently face(s)," the group said in a statement. "The Vines have not broken up. The band would like to sincerely apologize to Incubus, our fans and friends. We would like to thank everyone close to us for the continued support."

Its trek with Incubus was due to begin June 24 in Atlantic City, N.J. The Vines would have been touring in support of their sophomore Capitol album, "Winning Days," which is off to a slow start. It debuted in April at No. 23 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 129,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its predecessor, "Highly Evolved," has moved 665,000 units.

The Vines recently toured North America as headliners of a package featuring fellow Aussies Jet and the Living End, though the main attraction appeared to be Jet, whose current album, "Get Born," has sold 865,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
