I'm still waiting for XM to simply play indie older than 18 months.

Yeah, installation is always a con. But then direct TV installation is free. I guess their subscription price is much higher too.

They were going to charge me $200 at the garage to install the aux cable to hook up external music devices. I did it myself in 10 seconds in the garage forecourt. [/b]
An AUX cable is a little different from an XM unit which requires a satellite antenna and an XM receiver unit mounted to the car somewhere.  Although that hasn't stopped me from considering hooking up an XM unit myself, I'm just a little less inclined to drill holes in a car to mount the tuner and pull out the upholstery to wire the antenna.

I'm getting satellite sometime this month.  I had my heart set on Sirius because I'm a Stern fan.  From what I've seen, the music is pretty diverse on both XM and Sirius so it wouldn't matter as far as sounds are concerned.  Also, I'm a big-ass sports fan so baseball and football would be nice.  Based on all this crap I've just written, can someone tell me which way to go?

XM has much deeper playlists and baseball...Sirius has Stern, football and endless repeats of only the top "hits". You decide.

What about the AD hour?  An hour that is all ads, with an occasional song snippet thrown in.

It seems to me that soon someone will come out with a box that will allow you to access both Sirius and XM. Of course, you would end up paying accordingly just like cable tv. Actually, some company will probably come around that will become the central distribution service that will allow you to subscribe to both and other up and coming satelitte companies.

Besides not having the money for either of these options, from what I've seen and heard, at this point, I have no desire to own either as they both are very bland to me. In fact, in many cases, I'd never consider listening to most of their stations. I almost never listen to commercial radio either because it sucks so extremely bad so saying it's one or the other doesn't really apply to me.

Now, wireless internet radio is a whole other thing in my book. That is something that I wish so much that I could have away from my computer. There's tons of good stuff in that direction for me. For now, it's just not in my budget. (Need a job that pays dollars instead of pennies.) Again, the future will probably offer some kind of device that will allow us to link up to everything from the various satellite stations, free commercial crap, cable and free commercial tv and to the internet. The real issue is getting all of these companies to agree on some sort of a common ground. It's definitely doable and would be a very desirable product to the consumer. Wouldn't be surprised at all if Comcast isn't already trying to work this one out.

That's MTV.

Oh, excuse me, that's all damn day and night!

What really irks me is when they pull that crap on stations that you have to pay for, such as anything but MusicTV.

On the subject of emptyTV... Ain't it great how M2 was created to show videos again and is now becoming a wasteland of countdown shows and special programming.  VH1 is only good for "Best Week Ever" where babybirds get their news.

Now there is MTV Hits which is where they show the crap mainstream videos.

The only channel worth watching is VH1 Classic which is where I end when there is need for quality background noise.  Although one night they had Sugar, Stone Roses, etc on which was really fab.

Still feel no real compelling reason to subscribe to sat radio, especially when a package arrives in the mail with cds burnt full of new tunage.  Cheers for that...

Sirus has just added a Little Steven's Underground Garage channel which could be of interest because shock horror it has shows hosted and programmed by real and knowledgable DJs and not some clueless personality.  But then again the DJ shows are only on the weekend...

I think the MTV business model is to start new channels with all videos all the time and then slowly creep them over to other B.S. as people start to watch.  I used to love M2, it had some great stuff, now it is really bad.

Speaking of MTV, I was driving up Rte. 5 yesterday and saw a sign for TRL Ministries.  I just wondered how that would work and if Carson was there.

One (presumably) easy way for the satellites to improve their programming greatly would be to pick up the feeds of great independent and college stations like WFMU, KCRW, etc. Radio@Netscape does this.

But yes, unbelievably, even with 60 odd music channels, in general each one is pretty bland, with a few exceptions. No matter how much they compartmentalize they still are very LCD focused.

About 3 years ago my cable company picked up MTV2 and I loved it.  A few months later I moved and my new cable company didn't offer it.  I got digital cable about a month ago and the first channel I checked out was MTV2.  What a load of crap that has turned into over the last few years.  Absolutely worthless.

kosmo is correct though.  VH1 Classic can be quite good.  Over the last few days I've seen Bauhaus, Alien Sex Fiend, XTC, Wendy O. Williams, an hour of interviews/music with The Smithereens and a lot more.  They tend to be a bit 80's-heavy, but that's why they call it "Classic", I guess.

Then again, I love XM too.
