Zombies/Love roll call
« on: October 13, 2004, 08:48:00 am »
I'm going.  Reviews of these shows haven't been that stellar.  We'll see.  It'll be hard to live up to Love's show at the Birchmere a few years back.

I'm there.  Stopped by the State last week and picked up my tix.  Can't wait to see the legendary Arthur Lee!

I'm surprised more folks aren't going...?  I haven't been able to rally any of my friends to go, so was hoping there might be a heavy board contingency.

I am so there. I can't believe the luck I had with PE canceling their gig at 930 this saturday, because I was really torn about whether I was going to leave after Love's set and race to go catch PE. But alas, they have canceled so I will be spending my night at the state theater soaking in all the 60s psychpop I can handle. Any idea if waiting to get tix at the door is a good idea or not?

i'm on the fence about going, only because i have a show to manage at the warehouse the same night. it also doesn't help that a ticket costs $30. there's a good chance i'll be there for love's set, catch some zombies, and then run over to the bloodthirsty lovers at the warehouse.

Same here. Don't really have $30 and afraid of driving 2 hours, which it would take me for this destination, only for it to very possibly sell out just before I get there.

Is the State theater general admission?  Hmmmm, this is a quandary, I tell ya.

"It's a real buzz to be here tonight" - Colin Blunstone

It was indeed quite the buzz worthy show.  It was a very pleasent suprise to findout orginial Love guitarist John Echols had joined an already stellar group of musicians.  While last years "Forever Changes" show will remain one of the best I've ever seen.  This show proved that Love is one of the best live acts out there today.  A whole lot of pretenders out there which could learn a thing or too from this band.

Arthur Lee sounded great, he was much looser and was enjoying himself more this time out.  While I would have liked a couple more of the early tracks.  Getting to hear the stripped down "Forever Changes" and songs leading up to album left me satisfied.  It would have been nice to get a longer set, another 45 minutes would done the trick.  An "Evening with Love" at the 9:30 club    :D    IMHO Love is a must see act these day.

Highlight of Love set was "The Red Telephone" which takes on new meaning in light of the Patriot Act.

Now the Zombies had  a real tough act to follow.  And while they started out strong began to fad towards the end.  Only being familiar with thier two biggets hits, I could quickly see the bands influence of Jellyfish and the Posies.  Will be filling some holes in my collection this week.

The Zombies seemed to hit a peak with the Argent chestnut "Hold your head up"  and never really recovered.

Best thing about the concert was it never felt like I was at an oldies show, unlike the Peter Noone Vegas revue a couple weeks back.

FYI - Love is playing at the Ram's Head in Annapolis tonight, but it's a sit down affair...

What Kosmo said.

Okay, in Bags' words (not as informed as K's), it was a GREAT show.  I'm not familiar with Love really, I bought "Forever Changes" a couple weeks ago and have only listened twice.  From that toe-dip in to the band, I wouldn't have assumed they'd be such a great live act, but the praises from Boardies piqued my interest.   The band was really fantastic, and Arthur is magnetic.  John Echols was great, and you could feel the additional energy boost of having another original member onstage.  Loved the set.

I knew nothing  of the Zombies' of course, when I heard their "hits," I knew them and it brought me right back to sitting in the backseat of my mom's japenese racing green Datsun 210 wagon, fighting with my sister over some sh*t on the way to the mall in Largo, Florida.  We're talking classic AOR radio from the old days.  That was fun, and "Hold Your Head Up" was fantastic (I'd never heard of Argent before), but I found that there were a few songs I'd never heard that sounded so much like Jellyfish, it was really a trip.  Thought those in particular were good, but after Love, they couldn't quite match the energy.

Speaking of trip, the whole show was a trip -- VERY psychedelic projections on stage (with the bubbling waterpaints and all) and on all the walls around the stage.  Woo hoo, where's the bong, dude.  And the three rockin' hippies doing the wild-armed circle "hippy dancing to rock" formation behind me was diggin' it, man!

Great show, glad we ran in to Kosmo.  State theater was a cool venue, as well.

Wow.  Kosmo's right.  Love is one of the greatest live acts I've ever seen.  I was prepared to be disspointed seeing as the last time I saw them was one of the finest shows I'd ever seen....well maybe dissapointed is too strong a word but that last show was so great it was a lot to live up to.  I was wrong.  Arthur seemed more at ease and in command now....truly a larger than life character.  The guy is obviously having a great time.  He didn't want to leave the stage last night.  This ain't no oldies act.  They seem and sound so relevant...plenty of guts and grit left in this band.  They played probably 2/3 of Forever Changes and a few of their obvious garage-y songs plus one new one.  Set was a little over an hour.  I could see this band again and again.  Arthur Lee has still got it in a big way.  Seeing him up there with Johnny Echols made it a great night.

I thought I'd miss the string section but I really didn't.  And that guy who plays lead guitar in his band????  One of the best players I've heard in a long long time.  He made a stronger impression on me last night than at the Birchmere, perhaps cuz he did a lot of filling in for the missing horns and strings.

On to the Zombies.  Following Love was no easy task and it seemed to be Love's audience last night.  The Zombies felt much more like an oldies act to me....and I'm a huge Zombies fan...from their early r&b stuff up to Oddesy and Oracle.  Highlights were Care of Cell 44, Brief Candles, a surprising performance of Just out of Reach, This Will be Our Year and Time of the Season was nice too.  Colin still has a great great voice but I didn't care too much for the newer songs they played.

It was great to see Colin and Rod play very good sounding renditions of songs off one of my favorite records of all time, they really did sound good on all the Oddesy and Oracle material, but this was Love's night.  If any of you ever have  a chance to go see that band I reccomend you do so.  And in case you didn't know it, Forever Changes is one of the greatest records of all time.  Buy it now and listen listen listen.

 Arthur Lee for President!

I suggest seeking out Baby Lemonade cds.  Baby Lemonade is the band that backs up Lee these days.  The story goes that Arthur walked into a an LA bar one where they were playing and upon hearing them fired his entire band at the time and hired them as Love.  They have a couple releases on the Sympathy for the Music Industry and one on Big Deal Records.  I have Exploring Music, on Big Deal, and it's one of these cases where they are better musicians then songwriters.  This one will probably pop up in the bargin bin seeing as Big Deal send out more promos then they actually sold.  Or we can swap cdrs sometime...

The lead guitarist Mike Randal has a new solo record out and his stuff can be found here

I really dig the work of the rythym guitarists especially his vocal harmonies
