Title: Muse Roll Call
Post by: redsock on November 01, 2004, 05:50:00 pm
Ok, so it's a week away, but I need to...

...post in the proper forum for ticket requests.

Better to start early. So who's going?

being that this probably wasn't expected to sell out and most likely the tix were sold to fans, what do you think the chances are that people will be selling them outside the night of the show?

Well, doors will probably open at 7:30pm, so I'd say at least an hour before then. There will probably be other folks there looking for tickets.

i've never been to the 930 before, didnt know how things worked, so to avoid taking any chances, I bought the tickets as soon as I heard about the show. I didnt think they'd sell out either.

I had a couple of questions about the venue though. i saw on a previous thread that the place is in a kinda rough neigborhood. I'm a college student, so Im planning to come in on foot from the metro. Will it be safe leaving on foot after the show ends? at around 9.30 or so?

aniym,

The area looks a bit ghetto, but i've never had any problems coming in by metro on foot.  You are a bit mistaken as to when the show will end however.  The doors open at 7:30, but the opening band probably won't go on stage until 8:30 or so, perhaps even a touch later.  It's fairly safe to say that the whole show will end around 11:30.  That leaves you just enough time to get out of the club and catch the last metro train back.  The day of the show, check 9:30's website and it'll have when each band is hitting the stage posted.  Please remember though that things happen, and the show may run too late for you to catch the metro.

I used to live on 13th, 1 minute away from the U street metro station and never had a problem. I would say it is very unlikely you will have any problem. However, it is always better to walk with friends. Actually, I remember that after many shows at the 9:30 I would walk to get something to eat at Ben's Chili Bowl which is in front of the metro station. If you go by yourself and still don't feel comfortable, you can still get a cab at the end of the show.

thanks for the replies, ppl.
Sadly enough, I will be in attendance alone, as no one I know here is into muse. I have a friend at macalester, and he's catching their minnesota show, and another in canada who might watch their toronto show.
Hmm, I hope the show doesn't stretch beyond 11.30, cuz im off to vermont the next morrning, and would like a couple hours sleep before it. Oh well, I might never get to see muse in the states again, so it should be worth it!
I had one more question to anyone who's seen muse live before. This is a bit embarrassing to ask, but as much as i love their harder-edged stuff ('megalomania' and 'sunburn' are a couple of big favourites), i was wondering if they ever play the cover of 'can't take my eyes off you', which I found to be a major, major guilty pleasure, for a group that just doesn't make happy music. I saw them do it on a BBC live set, and it was great, but post-absolution, they tend to stick to stuff from absolution and origin o/ symmetry, from what i can tell.
Not a problem if they don't, though. it is sort of a girly song, and would be more than a little out of place in a male-heavy crowd of 900. Which brings me to another question: does muse have female fans in the US? they're huge in europe, so there's a decent number of females attending their shows, but how about here? any clue?

i would imagine plenty of female fans for Muse.

 and probably sorta young.

Count me amongst the female fans attending the show. I saw them at Coachella earlier this year and they rocked! As far as what they'll perform, you may want to check one of their fansite message boards for setlists to get an idea.

I'll be there and am very much looking forward to it!

Re: Metro. I've attended many, many concerts at the 9:30 Club and I've almost always taken the Metro. I've never had a problem walking to or from the Metro station. It's only about a block away and lots of other club patrons will be walking in the same direction. For what it's worth, most of the concerts I've attended at the 9:30 Club have ended closer to 11:40 than 11:30. The last Green line train to Greenbelt is ostensibly at 12:21am, but it's almost always about 5 minutes late. If you're going towards Greenbelt, you should haven't any problems at all catching the Metro. Indeed you'll probably end up waiting at the Metro station about 20-30 minutes, so you might want to bring a good book. If instead you need to catch the Green line train to Branch Ave. in order to transfer at Chinatown or L'Enfant Plaza or Metro Center, for example, then you need to be a lot more careful. You might want to skip the last song of the encore, for example, or at the very least move closer to the exit and be prepared to sprint to the Metro station. I think the last Branch Avenue train is at 11:48pm (double check the Last Train sign at the Metro Station before you leave!), but it's often a couple minutes early. I usually see a half dozen people or more get stranded at the Metro station following a 9:30 Club concert nearly every time. Moral of the story: If you're coming to DC from out of town and then taking the Metro, park at the Greenbelt station instead of some station on the Red or Orange lines, for example. See   http://www.wmata.com/ (http://www.wmata.com/)   for more info on train schedules, etc.

You're right.  When I have extras, I look in the band threads first to see if there are board regulars who need tickets.  If not, then I head to the Tx requests...

i can't believe how many people are desperate for tix to this show...is hfs playing the shit out of this band now?  if so, ugggggh! now we'll be surrounded by meathead hfs listeners that are lucky to go to one non-hfs sponsored concert in their lifetime (with the exception maybe of ridiculous woodstock rip-offs). i can't wait for this show though.  just hoping the audience isn't filled with assholes.

Get over yourself, hon. Be happy for the band. Besides, who cares how those attending the show got into the band? Muse sold out a venue, which means they're likely to return to DC in the future.

they've been consistenly ending with Stockholm Syndrome for the last 8 months or so, and i see no reason why they would stop, seeing as how much that songs rocks!

also, expect this set to be Absolution loaded. if they play 15 songs, i expect half to be from their new disc.

joz my boy.   please remember that Muse is a HUGE band in Europe. And to my best knowledge they have never even played a show in DC. Though i heard they were a opener for RHCP in 2000, i have lived in MD for most of the time Muse was a band, and have been a fan from the release of Showbiz....and i didnt catch them live until Coachella this year.

other than Curiosa and possibly seeing them open for RHCP...this band hasnt ever been in DC.

a huge band like this, finally playing DC...wow.

most people in America...even thier biggest longest fans...have probably never seen them.

this show is going to be total rocking energy.
so dont stand near me, cause i am gonna jumping and dancing like crazy. (ask rob or redsock!)

i'm actually a girl, sonick (i thought i told you that a while ago...nevermind tho)  anyway, all i meant by my comment is that there are a lot of "fans" who strangely sat on their ass for a few weeks after tickets went on sale  and eventually sold out under them.  now they are trolling the message board begging for tickets.  geez...anyone who is a big fan of muse should have known: (1) this not-very-often-seen-live-in-the-US band is coming to the 9:30 club (i knew well in advance of tix actually going on sale) and (2) the 9:30 is small and tends to sell out for popular shows (see interpol and DCFC).

i am well aware that they're really big in Europe.  in fact, i also saw them at coachella and heard of a few people who actually flew all the way from tokyo to see them in cali....that's devotion to a band.

yes, and i'm very excited that they're finally playing also...i saw them at curiosa and, in general, the crowd was very cool. my friend (k8teebug) on this forum was at both coachella and curiosa with me and she did have a run-in with a couple of frat boys at the curiosa show...not sure how they made it to the muse stage but whatever.  i'm always hesitant about hfs-sponsored shows though. i didn't mind listening to hfs back in the late 80s/early 90s and i actually ended up going to one hfs-sponsored show (snowjob at ski liberty in pa) but only because i was there to interview the bosstones and bloodhound gang for my college radio station.  i'm happy muse is finally getting airplay but hfs (the true alternative...yeah, right) and a lot of its listeners annoy me.

i'm happy to share the floor with other big muse fans, especially those who will be seeing them for the first time...and don't worry about the jumping/dancing as I will be doing the same...while trying to keep my heart from exploding. (does anyone else feel that way when you hear matt sing live? just wondering.)

Did I ever tell you about this guy I went to college named John Muse?

He used to go around campus all punk rock with a mohawk and black clothes, spouting lines from the Rocky Horror Picture Show as if he had made them up. He would grow his mohawk in at the end of each semester when it was time to go home to his ricg parents in the Hamptons.

Meanwhile, he had the nerve to call me a "poseur" because I'd wear combat boots one day and penny loafers the next.

Last I heard of him, he had dropped out of college, was running a landscaping business in the Hamptons, and was picked by the local paper as a "blue collar hunk". But then he got fat and lost his hair.

wow, it's really great to see serious muse fans around the board! heck, it's just great to see even casual muse fans around the board...had no idea muse had that many fans...i've definitely damaged my eyes watching spotty bootlegs of their werchter, pinkpop and glastonbury performances, so it'll be great seeing them in the flesh for once...even if i don't get to watch them trash their instruments post-show.

I'm going to be there ... even if I have to leave class early to get there (class ends at 7:15, lucky me). I've been a Muse fan for quite, quite a while -- this will be the second time I've been able to see them, though. The first was at Curiosa, and I can only imagine how amazing they're going to be in such a small venue. I cannot fucking wait for this one.

Ok, so Philadelphia on Saturday night.

First off, I love the Electric Factory.  Its very big, but open and you can really walk pretty freely around the place, even when its sold out.

Unless you have a drink, then you cant go downstairs. which sucks sorta, but oh well. no one spills thier drink on ya!

Muse came out just rocking. and kept it up all set long

 songs played were
(and i do forget which order but this is CLOSE)

 New Born
 The Small Print
 Absolution
 Thoughts of A Dying Athiest
 Hysteria
 Sober
 Micro-Cuts
 Butterflies And Hurricanes
 Citizen Erased
 Apocalypse Please
 Time Is Running Out
 Plug-In Baby
 Stockholm Syndrome

they played some new song, and i think there were 15 altogether, but its monday, i am tired.

butterflies and Hurricanes is so great live, and the end of the show ends up being a little crazy too.

the crowd was just going nuts. a full blown mosh pit was in dead center, but even the sides (where we were) we jumping and dancing like crazy.

hope tonights crowd can match that energy.

Muse, i know, will.  They are on top of thier game right now.

I dont want to discourage anyone by making that show sound like some crazy fun rock concert.

   this was the Philly show.

dont worry.  the DC show will be way more tame, and much less fun.  so dont go selling your tickets!

my friend saw them at Curiosa in NYC and said that they basically stole the show, insane stage presence the entire time... i'll be there tonight, then heading up to NYC Thursday for Interpol... oh yeah, and Pixies are only a month away!

Nah, my current job isn't that bad. I'm just looking to move up the food chain, which isn't possible now unless my boss decides to quit. He's made no such comments in that direction, alas.

i've got an interview with the zutons at 5:30. so please be nice to me, 9:30 staff, and let me in. then i will be rocking out to the show, i'm so psyched seeing the setlist from philly, if they play both "new born" and "plug in baby" i will be dancing like crazy.

f*cking brilliant....awesome, awesome show.  And even in DC, the crowd was rocking almost the whole time and all the way to at least two-thirds of the way back, to just in front of the monster soundboard they built out of the usual spot -- was about two and half times the normal size.

I fully admit, I'm a newcomer -- I got Absolution and Showbiz about three weeks ago.  I listen to Absolution a LOT.

I'm impressed.  And a $15 show to boot.  Kick ass.  Don't know if Interpol will be able to match 'em, but I'm hoping so.

I'm sorry if this offends people. But, IMHO,the sound absolutely sucked tonight. I've been to loud shows and enjoyed it, but this was really bad. Couldn't hear the vocals or bass at all. During some of the loudest parts, all I could hear was distortion and a faint snare beat.

I dont blame the 930 sound crew because they probably had nothing to do with it. Muse brought in their own sound board.

The Zutons, on the other hand, had a fantastic outing and they got the crowd going.

helicon, I think you're right...I just didn't know what to expect so I loved the show.  But a friend of mine was at the Phillie show and said the sound mix was immeasurably better -- crisp, vocals mixed up (including the bass player's, who apparently  has an awesome voice), bass was better mixed.

I rate the Muse show:  <img src="http://www.dimpleandasmirk.com/_images/avatar.jpg" alt=" - " />

It was so great seeing them in a small venue considering I first saw them in 100+ degree heat in the CA desert earlier this year. The crowd was really into it and I love that. It makes for a better concert-going experience.

I disagree on the Zutons, though. Frankly, one would have thought there were two different audiences with each band given the (lack of) reaction the Zutons received. I had heard a couple of their songs previously, but they didn't win me over tonight.

It sounded like they were playing in a bathroom  :)  But I was in front of the soundboard, which usually is a great spot. I'm not discrediting their performance, because they were really good. I just wish the overall mix was better.

i thought the sound was fantastic for both the zutons and muse. we were right up in front, near the speakers. it was loud, but that the sound was not distorted and vocals were clear.

anyone see seth and his special guests up in the vip stage area?

dandy, were you there? i think you may have been standing in front of bunnyman and i during the zuton's set.

i wasn't impressed with either  band-just not my thing. their muscianship was excellent, but i couldn't figure out who the zutons wanted to be-sometimes it was credence clearwater revival, other times crosby stills and nash-it just felt like a tribute to the 70's. though the lead singer's purple velvet blazer was pretty fab.

i think muse lacked real substance. some real highlights in there, but overall, they just didn't do it for me. i'm glad i checked them out, but i don't see the need to see them again.

Yeah, I had the same impression. I kept thinking Doobie Brothers with some Zappa thrown in, or maybe that's because the rhythm guitarist reminded me of Zappa.

Ok, heres my take on the show

I still dont really like the Zutons too much.  not sure why, but they werent a good opener for Muse i dont think.

Muse's show was better in Philly i think, but they were great here too. We were dead center about 5-10 people back, depending on who was pushing where.  The crowd was pretty wild up front there, but not a mosh pit like Philly! (thank god)

A couple times it seemed like they were off a touch, during "Sober" and "Plug-In Baby" i can remember.  Just thought they were out of synch, just those two or three times.

The sound, i thought was fine.  Maybe not as good as Philly but definitely fine. Though its hard to be a critic when youre all the way up front.

No huge white balloons at the end like in Philly (and Coachella) , guess the place is too small.

One funny thing.  while Muse was readying to play...these guys standing next to us were like "hey, you were next to us for Muse at Curiosa screaming like a fool"

   small world.

also saw redsock, chillin upstairs and dandy, i was going to find you after the show but i could not find you!

Muse gave an excellent performance, though I agree with the sound issues.  Maybe the venue just isn't equipped to handle that level of sound.  A bit strange that they didn't really talk to the crowd...they just sort of went from song to song, left...came back for their Apocalypse Please/Stockholm Syndrome encore and then left.  In that sense, they didn't really have much stage presence.

The crowd right near where we were (left side of the soundboard) kinda sucked (except for the guy doing an Air Guitar solo during the piano parts of Butterflies and Hurricanes...that guy ruled).  Is the short sleve plaid shirt the uniform of choice for the preppy frat crowd or something?  I swear I must've seen at least five people with that on.  Oh and one guy wearing an Absolution shirt...always reminds me of PCU ("You're wearing the shirt of the band that you're going to see?  No...Don't be that guy.")

The Zutons didn't really do it for me.

There were a lot of "that guys" at the show last night. (Not including the thatguy, who was up front) I think some of them bought shirts at the merch booth and decided to wear them instead of carrying them all night, while others came in wearing Muse shirts.

I was on the balcony next to the requisite drunk girl. She actually spilled her drink off the balcony.     What is it about my being that attracts all the wrong people at shows? If it's not the drunk person, it's the "go get a fuckin' room" couple. With my luck, I'll be standing next to a bunch of too-cool hipsters at tonight's show.

Anyone know the set list? Please someone post it...

I thought Muse was awesome! One of three or four best shows of the year. They were the perfect combination of energy and musicianship.

Definitely the best light show I've seen at the 9:30 Club all year.

I was just a tad left of center about 6-8 people back from the stage, and I thought the sound was fine for both Muse and the Zutons.

Yes, I also saw Seth on the right balcony at the beginning of the show.

My hat's off to last night's DJ. That was one of the best play lists of recent memory.

I liked the Zutons. I thought they were pretty good, but I seem to have a lower threshold for enjoying opening acts than most people. The Zutons' saxophonist was the best eye candy since the Abandoned Pools' bassist from that Garbage show a couple years ago.  :)

I was a bit surprised how early the showed ended. 11:22pm, by my recollection. That was the earliest I've gotten out of a regular weeknight 9:30 Club show in a long time. I wonder if it was because it was a HFS show? And after I posted a warning earlier in this very thread about people getting stranded at the Metro....

no DJ at all, it was a tape/recording.  I was at the Philly show and they played the exact same songs, in the exact same order.  at least between Zutons and Muse.  Starfuckers, no one's leaving, etc.

Really?  yeah, i was there!  but it was very hard to find familiar faces for some reason.  Several people including myself were pleasantly surprised by the Zutons, perhaps from not knowing what to expect.  That female saxophone player sure had energy!  At times, they conjured up Kings of Leon for me, and I found that last song rather interesting and ethnic-sounding with the instruments they were using.

I'm so tired right now..  I can't say I enjoyed Muse from beginning to end but the crowd's energy rocked, like the band.  They seem all over the place sometimes with slow ballads, heavy rockers and classical passages.  I still love Absolution though.

The Zutons were not all that IMHO, but clovette liked them. Muse were good, really really loud, but in a good way. You could not hear the bass at all from the balcony, but considering the Zutons bass nearly made my lung collapse, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I was impresed with the crowd, and it is hard for me to understand why they have never played the Cat or 930 before, if they got this sort of audience. Granted, many were new fans who only knew stuff off the new album, but still...

And the Zutons just didn't match up. Not a good selction of an opening band. Their 70's style is a long way from Muse.

Muse can play, they sounded pretty good, but overall I just thought it was an OK show. I don't know why it didn't move me more, but I guess it's a matter of personal taste. It won't be in my top 10 of the year though. It was cool to hear "This Wicked Tongue" by PJ Harvey before they went on.

good show, but i wasn't as moved by them as when i saw them at coachella or curiosa.

maybe they were made to play big outdoor festivals?

i didn't like how the sound was mixed either (the drummer might as well have tossed aside the bass drum and played standing up. and the bass guitar wasn't loud enough).

speaking of PCU, the bass player reminded me of jeremy pivens.

i thought the show was great, opening with "hysteria" and then straight on into "new born"... amazing. i was up in the vip balcony in front of the bar dancing like crazy, the zutons dedicated their last song to us. maybe i shouldn't drink so much at concerts.. oh well. i really enjoyed both bands. i'd never watched a show from the balcony before, it was great seeing the crowd jumping around in sync and all the fist pumps. good stuff. can't wait for interpol tonight.
Title: Re: Muse Roll Call

I was about two people from the barrier, dead center. Amazing show. I don't care if the sound wasn't as crisp as it was anywhere else, it was wonderful to see them in a small venue setting. And I disagree about stage presence; I don't think that a band has to banter with the crowd in order to have it. You can see it just in the way they move and the way the crowd reacts, and I think Bellamy definitely has stage prescence, for a midget.

Would've liked a little more room to jump around, but that's the price you pay for being close. No complaints about the crowd's energy or anything like that, I had a great fucking time. The last time I saw them was at Curiosa, and we got to their set as they were starting (we stayed to see Interpol, rather than getting a place close by), so it made my week (year?) to be this close this concert.

Wasn't too terribly impressed with the Zutons, but I coveted the lead's blazer, and I rather liked the last song they played.

I saw the show and it was really quite different from the time I saw them at Wembley. The biggest difference is that they did relatively fewer songs with keyboards.

I felt that the keyboard oriented songs came off as overly pretentious and grandiose. That stuff just pissed me off. I like the setlist from last night alot more. They should stick to being a guitar band.

Anyone notice the prerecorded keyboard tracks that were used throughout the night? How come that is acceptable on this board but prerecorded vocals aren't?

I must have missed the thread where everyone on the board gave their acceptance of using pre-recorded items during a live show.

Anyhoo, I believe there is quite a difference between someone opting to use a keyboard loop while playing guitar (or another instrument) live and a person who lip synchs à la Ms. Ashlee.
Title: Re: Muse Roll Call
Post by: sonickteam2 on November 09, 2004, 03:54:00 pm
yes.  I agree.  i believe there are countless bands who use guitar/keyboard or even drum loops in their live shows nowadays.

some bands prefer to add touring musicians to provide the extra instrument they may have recorded in the studio, others decide to loop something, so the band can play, as is, on stage.

doesn't make much of a difference to me really.

hip hop artists do this all the time, rapping to thier records.

I presume if Muse or anyone else had prerecorded thier lead guitar part, or were faking the guitar solo, it may come off as super lame.

the difference being, no one is "faking" to play the part you are hearing but not seeing played.

there was plenty of "behind the curtain" activity last night.  there's just no way three dudes can make that much sound live.

that said, i enjoyed the show.  i've heard such good things about them from so many people, there was no way they'd live up to their hype, but i dug the guitar based songs.  kinda reminded me of when i saw radiohead at the old club, back when they played rock songs.

OK, I admit I'm a Muse newcomer (relatively) too. I've been listening to Absolution ever since it was released here in the U.S., and I recently ordered Showbiz. What about those UK imports I see for sale on Amazon.com? Are those worth getting at import prices? Or do you think they'll show up as domestic releases soon enough?

Get Origin of Symmetry. It's their best CD, in my opinion. Absolution's got a number of catchy singles, but as a whole, Origin's just amazing. Not a bad song on it.

Ahh...that would explain alot. OK - so not prerecorded but I'm guessing Matt Bellamy's ego wouldn't allow him to give anyone else credit for creating music beyond the absolute necessary minimum.

I used to really like this band but the more I see them live, the more they bug me. I just can't get past Bellamy's inflated head. More room for Sonick to rock out the next time, eh?  :)

being a Radiohead fan, Bellamy's head isnt anywhere near the size of "la tete du Thom Yorke"

   in fact, i think he's Thom's understudy.

but thanks for making room for me, bro  ;)

Iâ??m on to you Mister Bellamy....

It is world domination you're after. And, you dare to evoke the spirits of our Gods: Queen, Radiohead, Metallica...Rachmaninoff, weaving your dark glamorous spell to seduce the armies of brit rock, brit pop, heavy metal, and punk into your ranks. You, the Phantom of your opera, beckon us to crossover and embrace you.....all the while assailing our senses with your pleading lyricism, soaring keyboard arpeggios, grinding guitars, and throbbing bass urging us on. It is Hysteria and I am afraid. But it is too late...surrounded by unfamiliar faces, we rush to you. Your rapturous vision is near and you laugh at the end of all things sacred and dear.

Bring it - we are ready for your absolution.

 (sorry too much coffee)  :D

I was pretty much ignoring this thread because I didn't go, but did they really only play 1 song from Showbiz?

yes.

i believe so.  thier setlist pretty much consisted of Origin on Symmetry and Absolution.

and again, being a Radiohead fan....i have learned to live with a complete departure from early recordings.

i dont think the songs on Showbiz really uphold the big rock sound they are trying to play now.  perhaps once they are more established in america they will start playing more Showbiz tracks.

I guess, I would have thought they would have played Muscle Museum as well.  I bet if they were to release origin of symmetry here it would be a bigger hit for them than Absolution.  I really think Absolution is their weakest effort.  Which I guess is why it is on the radio  ;) .

I loved the show. The sound wasn't great, true, (15ft frm the stage anyway) and they really could have left out 'ruled by secrecy' in favor of something like 'muscle museum', but im splitting hairs. the crowd around me, 100% teenybopper, was surprisingly pretty cool, especially during time is running out---matt didnt even have to sing the chorus for that one. on another topic, don't muse ever play sunburn's guitar solo with a, uh, guitar? it's ok on keyboards, but it wouldve been amazing on a guitar. new born and the small print were done vey well, and I don't even like TSP.
Bonus: Desperate fans behind me screaming for space dementia, and a rather preppy audience member clad in translucent shades, while indoors, no less, having his meticulously dishevelled hair messed up while rocking out to stockholm syndrome.
and, i was able to get on the metro abck home w/time to spare. How considerate of them to finish 5 minutes before the green line's last run.  :D
