This is a dangerous topic... I'd like to see how some people handle this... please limit it to only three. I'll start:<P>P.J. Harvey: this mess we're in<BR>Echo and the Bunneymen : Killing Moon<BR>Radiohead : anyone can play guitar<P>... I know a little T. Yorke here... but it's what came to mind. I'll probably post again when I'm in a different mood.
-
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (its a cover, so what)<BR>Beatles - A Day In The Life<BR>Pixies - Where is My Mind?<P>leaving a bunch off
-
This is way too tough!!!!!
-
Yeah, I know. I started this thread and already I have other songs in mind... depending on mood, what side of the bed I get out of and so on.... in fact I think sometimes my favs on one day are horrible the next. Heck I just listened to Ties that bind by springsteen and at times I would put that high up there.
-
Hmm...these three are among my favorites: <P>1.) Howlin Wolf- "Evil"<BR>Next to Sam Cooke, Howlin Wolf is my favorite male singer, and "Evil" is my favorite Howlin Wolf track. <P>2.) Joy Division- "Twenty Four Hours"<BR>Very bleak and intense. I dunno... maybe it's because of the weather today...<P>3.) Funkadelic- "Alice In My Fantasies" <BR>Excellent guitar riff and the vocals are over-the-top. I always have a copy of this with me at all times.
-
this is too tough for me to pick... so instead of naming them, i'll just say that it's too tough to choose
-
"Crystal" -- New Order
-
here's 3...<P>Catherine Wheel " Black Metallic" ( or "Show Me Mary")<P>Funkadelic " Standing on the Verge of Getting It on" ( or "Cosmic Slop")<P>Warren Zevon "Lawyers, Guns and Money"( or "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner")<P>....although I could name 3 more right now....<P>tough choices...
-
The Waterboys - And a bang on the ear<P>Pixies - The Happening<P>Pavement - Range life<P>And I had to leave the Pogues out, that was tough.
-
Jane's Addiction - ted, just admit it<BR>Tom Petty - American Girl<BR>Pixies - Debaser
-

(http://www.930.com/ubb/smile.gif)<P>I've been listening to this "Black Metallic" single I got at the Black Cat rock and shop sale. Can't get enough of it. I wouldn't personally pick "Show me Mary" in addition but perhaps "Crank" or "The Nude" from "Chrome."
-
one of my guilty pleasures.. The Carpenters "Superstar".... hahah. i can't help it! it's classic
-
All of my favorite songs at this moment are too new to see if they'll stand the test of time so I'll stick to guaranteed things.<P>If I have to pick three right now, they are:<BR>Verve ~ Rolling People<BR>Stone Roses ~ I am the Resurrection<BR>Spoon ~ Anything You Want<P>I also considered:<BR>Cure ~ Pictures of You<BR>Rolling Stones ~ Sway<BR>Pavement ~ Summer Babe<BR>Guns N Roses ~ Rocket Queen<BR>Smashing Pumpkins ~ I Am One<P>

don't start me talking
I could talk all night
my mind goes sleepwalking
while I'm putting the world to right
called careers information
have you got yourself an occupation
CHORUS:
oliver's army is here to stay
oliver's army are on their way
and I would rather be anywhere else
but here today
there was a checkpoint charlie
he didn't crack a smile
but it's no laughing party
when you've been on the murder mile
only takes one itchy trigger
one more widow, one less white nigger
chorus
hong kong is up for grabs
london is full of arabas
we could be in palestine
overrun by a chinese line
with the boys from the mersey and the thames and the tyne
but there's no danger
it's a professional career
though it could be arranged
with just a word in mr. Churchill's ear
if you're out of luck you're out of work
we could send you to johannesburg
oliver's army is here to stay
oliver's army are on their way
and I would rather be anywhere else
but here today
and I would rather be anywhere else
but here today
and I would rather be anywhere else
but here today

Ryan Adams - To Be Young...
Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)
-
Shine a Light by The Rolling Stones
Shine a Light by Spiritualized
Pale Blue Eyes by The Velvet Underground
The Spiritualized song will always be on there but the other two could change.
-
fake plastic trees - radiohead
it's on - the high strung
on the bound - fionna apple
but my list will change as often as the colour of my hair.........but i do particularly like these songs
-
I would have to add "Red Army Blues" The Waterboys. Interesting note at the end of the song, taken from his official website.
RED ARMY BLUES
When I left my home and my family
my mother said to me
"Son, it's how many Germans you kill that counts
Go set your country free"
So I packed my bags and I brushed my cap
and I walked out into the world
Seventeen years old,
never kissed a girl
I took the train to Voronezh
- that was as far as it would go
Exchanged my sacks for a uniform,
bit my lip against the snow
I prayed for Mother Russia
in the summer of '43
and as we drove the Germans back
I really believed God was listening to me
Then we howled into Berlin,
tore the smoking buildings down,
raised the Red Flag high,
burnt the Reichstag brown
I saw my first American
- he looked a lot like me
He had the same kind of farmer's face,
said he came from some place called Hazard, Tennessee
When the war was over
my discharge papers came
Me and twenty hundred others
went to Stettiner for the train
"Kiev!" said the Commissar
"from there your own way home"
But I never got to Kiev
We never came back home
The train went north to the taiga
We were stripped and marched in file
up the Great Siberian road
for miles and miles and miles and miles
Dressed in stripes and tatters
in a Gulag left to die
all because Comrade Stalin feared
that we'd become too westernized !
I used to love my country
I used to feel so young
I used to believe that life
was the best song ever sung
I would have died for my country
back in 1945
but now only one things remains
- the brute will to survive
(Note. Years after this song was released I received a letter from a Russian man who said every word of the song was true except the line "It's not how many Germans you kill that counts, it's how many people you set free"(first verse). He told me "people went to the war to kill Germans". I realize that when I wrote the song I allowed youthful idealism to distort the sense and truth of the song with an out of context pacifist sentiment. I have now changed it. MS)
London April 1982
-
Roadrunner - Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers
Down So Low - Mother Earth/Tracy Nelson
Everlong - Foo Fighters
Ask me tomorrow and it would likely be a different three (out of the several thousand finalists).
-
Depeche Mode- Blasphemous Rumours
Red House Painters- Drop
Low- Lullaby
Must be the music rotation i have going right now. but i have such a variety of musical tastes, that it could easily change hour by hour. . .
-
impossible
but
Muse - New Born
Who - Wont Get Fooled Again
Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely
-
I'm warning you now before you go any further! I'm a classic rock fan. I'm probably correct in my assumption that that's a crime here, but who cares?
Here they are:
Southern Cross- Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Moonage Daydream/Ziggy Stardust/Young Americans/Golden Years- All by David Bowie
Dream On- Aerosmith
That Smell- Lynnrd Skynnrd
Hotel California- The Eagles
All along the Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix
(there's alot more than that but you guys really care).
And more contemporary stuff:
Buddy Holly- Weezer
Plush- Stone Temple Pilots
Pepper- Butthole Surfers
Breaking the girl- Red Hot Chili Peppers
Radiohead- Karma Police
Okay. The shooting gallery is now open and i have a huge bullseye on my chest. Do your worst.
-
"Sexual Healing" Marvin Gaye (I kid you not. Make fun, I don't care.)
off the top of my head:
"Blasphemous Rumours" Depeche Mode
"Million Miles Away" Plimsouls
More current:
tie b/w "Chocolate" or "Run" Snow Patrol
"Everlong" Foo Fighters
"Easier" or "Comes A Time" Glen Phillips

1. "we rule the school" - BELLE AND SEBASTIAN
2. "the living end" - THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN
3. "trouble loves me" - MORRISSEY
here's 7 more just to even it out ;o)...
4. "minor threat" - MINOR THREAT

6. "end on end" - RITES OF SPRING
7. "i'm waking up to us" - BELLE AND SEBASTIAN

this was quite the challenge...i have a running list of "perfect" songs, most of which end up toward the top of my favorites list. in fact, grotty's suggestion of "rocket queen" and tiny gee's "two-headed boy" just missed the cut for top three as did a couple of bowie tracks (rock and roll suicide or lady stardust), radiohead (no surprises), "lonely soul" by u.n.k.l.e. and richard ashcroft and, sadly enough, "superstar" by the carpenters. i'll probably regret this all day, but here they are:
/1/ Velvet Underground - Sweet Jane
/2/ Tom Waits - Ruby's Arms
/3/ Built to Spill - Carry the Zero
-
Barcelona,
I've never heard that band but those lyrics are powerful stuff.
speaking of powerful I heard NWA's "F*ck the Police" the other night and for the first time in a long time really listened to the lyrics... that is one angry, powerful song... and sooo much more compelling than the usual contrived hip-hop bitches/hos/gangstas crap.
-
1. bob dylan - "boots of spanish leather"
2. stan getz/joao gilberto - "p'ra machucar meu coracao"
3. bob marley - "rebel music (3 o'clock road block)"
-
Happy to see that someone else likes Stan Getz and Joao Gilberto. I too was quite fond of Boots of Spanish Leather until I heard Stuck Inside of Mobile. Two very different songs, but both are well written.

1) Where'd you dig this oldie up from Doctor?!
I had the strangest out-of-body experience perusing the topic - reading a list - liking it - & then realizing it was mine. From 1.5 years ago. Weird
2) I feel compelled to acknowledge these very fine & brave choices:
by Sugartastic Tee Flava:
"Sexual Healing" Marvin Gaye.
One of the GREATEST songs ever in my opinion. I even love all the cheesy covers that you routinely hear.
by dtran9:
Ryan Adams - To Be Young...
Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out)
All favorites of mine at one time.
3) I can't believe that I didn't put any Afghan Whigs on my original list. Or any Catherine Wheel. Or possibly what has become my favorite song: Zip City by DBT.
I did coincidentally, make a mix cd last evening - fueled by an over indulgence in Pinot Noir. It started as a full 80 min CDR of many of my favorite songs of the moment. I cut it down to about 45 minutes worth of tunes similar in tone: Dark - Moody - Weird. Perfect for late night listening. It's short, but o so sweet.
So here are my favorites songs - on Sunday 8/29/04 - all together on one record for my eternal listening pleasure:
At Least That's What You Said ~ Wilco
Esta Noche ~ Twilight Singers
Hey ~ the Pixies
Young Liars ~ TVOTR
Leif Erickson ~ Interpol
All The Wine ~ the National
Hyperballad ~ Twilight Singers
Switching Off ~ Elbow
Hoover ~ Holopaw
Goddamn Lonely Love ~ Drive-by Truckers
I'd be happy to share the love if anyone would like to hear it.
-
it was weird to see that back in February '03 I listed "Crystal" by New Order as my favorite song. Yes it's catchy but I hadn't thought about it since then... although now I'm thinking about it again.
you are Doomed. (http://www.alex.to/doomlink)

spent half a life deciding what went wrong
trying to find out what took you so long
until you feel its all part of some crazy scheme
that conjures in your memories til
you discover whats behind that hill.
you picked me up and we went for a ride
into the stained glass cavern of the nite
you turned to say, your eyes fixed on the rows,
take me from this place i know
the ruined landscape that i once called home..
-trail of dead- "sources tags & codes"
..song of the moment.
-
Deep in the rain of sparks behind his brow
Is a part replayed from a perfect day
Teaching her how to whistle like a boy
Loveâ??s first blush
You, the only sense the world has ever made
Early evening June
This room and radio play
This I need to save
I choose my final scene today
Switching off

I've read some good selections here.
Some of my mellower or guilty pleasure choices: "Life in A Northern Town" Dream Academy. Can't help it, I do. And "Circle of Friends" Edie Brickell. "Imagine" John Lennon.
On my initial list, the latter two could be replaced by The Kinks, Elvis Costello, Weezer or Prince, The Ramones, the list goes on. I went w/ what first came to mind. "Sexual Healing" is my #1 hands down.

This question is easy.
1. The Flame by Cheap Trick
2. Gloria by Laura Branigan
Nothing else comes close.

You only make fun of these songs because deep down you love them.
What do you think of this?
Goddamn Lonely Love ~ Drive-by Truckers
I think it's brilliant. Up there with the best they've done. I hadn't been a big Isbell fan until the latest. He steals the show though. They really captured magic on that tune.
-
I would agree that Isbell is the top Trucker on this album. All four of his songs are outstanding. Though I think "Never Gonna Change" is my current favorite.
Gotta give credit to Cooley for singing a song about stock car racing, and to Patterson for rhyming two great lines that take me back to my rural youth; "lying sack of shit" and "sucking left hind tit".

I don't know if it had been discussed here yet, but I do remember having an argument with my brother when I was a teenager, and I was arguing the Laura Branigan was truly a musical talent.

American singer Laura Branigan has died from a brain aneurism at the age of 47.
The pop star, who found fame in the 1980s with hits Gloria and Self Control, died in her sleep at her home in East Quogue, New York on Thursday.
Her brother says Branigan had complained of a headache for two weeks before her death, but had not sought medical help.
The singer - who started out as a backing singer for legend Leonard Cohen - turned to acting after her musical career began to fade and won roles in TV hit Chips and films Mugsyâ??s Girl and Backstage.
In one of her last roles she played Janis Joplin in New York stage musical Love, Janis.

I knew it! It's some weird type of therapy you're practicing to help exorcise these bad songs from your psyche.
-
What I didn't know was that she sang backup for Leonard Cohen. See, she must have had talent.
-
Let's be honest here. Leonard Cohen is excellent, but no one needs much of a vocal range to back that guy up. Ben Stein could be a back up singer for Cohen.

Is it too late for me to post my top 3?

Too late?!?
This topic was started back in February 2003. Timeliness is of *no* concern here.
-
1. Jesus & Mary Chain "The Hardest Walk"
2. Husker Du "Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill"
3. The Pogues "Misty Morning Albert Bridge"
I'm kind of stuck in the 80s.
-
Kosmo or Medusa should have an event playing only songs on this list.
So eclectic. Yet so groovy
-
1. La caccia, by Goblin ...This is from the DAWN OF THE DEAD(78) soundtrack. It's from the scene when the SWAT guys are driving the trucks to block the mall doors. Has a very triumphant feel.
2. Street Thunder, by John Carpenter off of the Assault on Precinct 13 (http://www.moviegrooves.com/shop/assaultonprecinct13.htm) soundtrack. The entire disc has a wickedkewl urban-showdown feel to it.
3. Goldfinger, by Webb Wilder & The Nashvegans. By far the best cover version of this kickass tune.
-

Any other two rotate so often....

this could be done. i spin at THE ASYLUM every other thursday (PARANOIA) and every friday (TRANSMISSION). a lot of the stuff mentioned here, oddly enough, i play already at TRANSMISSION: JOY DIVISION, ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN, U2, THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, etc. all it would take is for me to get some of the stuff i don't have on vinyl, and we could have a party. KOSMO and MEDUSA could be guests.
something to think about...
-
"See a Little Light," Bob Mould
"Spellbound," Siouxsie & the Banshees
"The Headmaster Ritual," The Smiths
Not sure 'cuz it's an impossible question, but they've stood the test of time and still make me swoon...

That'd be cool.
Although...this thread has reminded me of "High Fidelity" -- when he calls the reporter to edit his Top 5 albums...

Mine change constantly but just to add 3 more:
Electronic: Prodigal Son
Monster Movie: Shortwave
Swervedriver: Duress
-or-
Never Lose That Feeling/Never Learn
(Can never make up my mind on my favorite Swervedriver song.)
-
Eight Miles High - Husker Du
Sister Europe - The Psychedelic Furs
Shattered - The Rolling Stones
-
that's a brilliant idea! :D

After reading some of your selections, I just thought you should know that this CD is on sale at Tower:
