Title: Two shows you dont want to miss....
Post by: beedubyah on February 09, 2005, 01:12:00 pm
The Music on Feb. 18th and Soundtrack of our Lives on March 21st

GREAT live bands bursting with talent and energy and 2 of the best shows Ive seen at the 930 club.

The Music have a sound all of their own.  Dance metal with a combination of Stone Roses and Led Zeppelin.  The singer has one of the best voices out there.

TSOOL are a throwback.  Pretty much straight ahead rock and roll. Combination of the Doors and The Who.  Their last album was amazing and put on a great show in '03.

Anyway, just my .02.  Bored at work thinking about those shows...

Now if it were TSOL at the Black Cat, you'd be on to something.

Soundtrack of Our Lives are great.

The Dears are opening.  I don't know them, but they are from Montreal and, therefore, must be cool.  D'accord?

In a decade of going to SXSW - the dears were the worst show I've seen.

 50 shows per festival
 10 years
 500 shows
 Dears = worst
Therefore Dears = one painful band

I saw their singer (who looks like a gorilla) puking in the Black Cat bathroom, then walking away claiming that he had "food poisoning".

I wasn't at the Arcade Fire show, but I highly doubt they were worse than Broken Social Scene.

i agree with this.

and for those looking to expand their horizons:

los amigos invisibles @ the black cat 3/18

i'd rank their show last november right up there with the BSS/stars show.

I was at the Broken Social Scene show, and it did nothing for me.

Seems like about half the people on this board thought that they were great, the other half thought they sucked.

i thought, in particular, the performance of "anthem for a seventeen-year-old girl" was just jaw-dropping ... emotionally blew away anything the arcade fire did ... and i did like the arcade fire show ...

Fantastic...I've been wanting to check out the Dears (just from reading about them -- not in the NY Times, in Magnet a ways back).  I'm definitely hitting this show.  Will there be a presale, ya think, ya think???    :D

Ah, I was at that show, missed the Dears.  Hadn't heard of them yet, so spaced they were there....one day I'll learn to get to a show in time for the opener, but sometimes it's hard to leave the Red Room (or my apt!).

If you go back and read that thread that ggw posted, you will find that there were quite a few board members who found the Broken Social Scene show rather underwhelming. This even despite the fact that at the time they were critical darlings. This even despite the fact that most people on this board seem to be predisposed to gushing over most of the bands that they go see (no surprise there...one usually picks shows to go to by bands that one is predisposed to liking.)

Thus, it seems like the board response the that show was one of being underwhelmed.

It seems that I have taken the general board feeling regarding this show (as well as the fact that their album was horrid) and attributed it to myself. Thus, I admit my mistake, though it's really quite inconsequential...it's like forgetting whether you saw some third rate movie, and you're like..."Did I see that movie or not?"

I can assume N'Sync is a horrible live act, and could have everyone and their mother tell me they are, but you'll never hear me go, "Oh, that time I saw N'Sync, totally blew. Justim Timberlake was missing all his dance moves!"

Well perhaps that's why you're writing such insightful reviews for a nationally treasured music website, and I'm only a poster on the 9:30 chatboard.

Actually, if you saw the number of german porn sites that link to us, you'd more aptly refer to us as an "internationally treasured music website," but we'll excuse your misgiving, you never have had much of a grasp on reality.

We were *at* that show, but left before BSS actually took the stage (were not inspired to stay by the preceeding acts, some of whom were part of BSS, probably coupled with the crowdedness and smokiness of the club)

Moreover, the general consensus of the board posts that were recollected imprinted in Rhett's memory that the show wasn't good...he's merely the product of the collective consciousness of this board, actually...

Which is the scariest thing, from my perspective...

Only one poster made negative comments on the Broken Social Scene show.  It's funny how that is considered the "consensus."

On the other hand, four people left positive comments.

Quote
BSS were fantastic. The material was incredible live. I thought the album was great...but live was even better. Surprisingly, one of the better shows I have ever been to.

I liked BSS a lot though. I thought they definitely kicked things up a notch compared to "You Forgot It In People". All-in-all a great show.

one of the better shows i've been to recently.

I for one, was very impressed with BSS. Clearly these are some talented folks.

So, positive reviews outnumber negative reviews by the margin of 4-to-1, yet that 1 negative is being held up as the consensus.

That's a government statistician for you.......

Is Drag It Up really the best Rhett Miller could do? I hardly see the point in throwing my best effort at things when no one else involved does.

maybe it was the negative Post review, as well as the fact that Pollard didn't even feel like they were worth staying for. And Bags' review was that they were so-so, when it's generally a given (to me) that Bags is usually generous in her critiques.

Why review a modestly selling 7 month old album at all? Don't you have sense enough to pick something a little more relevant? Weren't there some German porn sites you could have been visiting?

So reading the newspaper review and listening to others opinion of music, even though you constantly claim thier taste to be insufficent compared to yours, made you actually believe that you were at the show and it was bad?

why are you still trying to defend yourself?

I don't know, ask Eric. While I probably personally wouldn't have chosen to review it at all if it was my site, I at least did take the effort to listen to it 6-7 times. Perhaps you could take that principle and apply it to "actually attending shows before you attempt to give commentary on them." Just a suggestion.

The sole negative comment was from Markie.

The reason for including the positive comments was to dispel the notion that they were "underwhelming."   Descriptions such as "fantastic" and "great show" are hardly underwhelming.

With four times as many positive reviews as negative ones, it is ridiculous to claim that the group as a whole had a negative opinion of the show.  It is even more absurd that someone who claims to have advanced degrees in mathematics would find it so.  Typical; but still absurd.

It's a bit absurd to think that you take every chance you get to make snarky, condescending statements about me and my personal life whenever possible on this chatboard, when I have never done the same about you.

I would agree. I find both myself and my wife highly amusing. One of the reasons I married her. I wish you were trapped next to us on the Metro when my wife blows a fart. That would be really amusing. In fact, it would be a gas.

I find your wife's bowl haircut and Ann Coultier-lookalike body amusing. Or, by "amusing," I mean "I laugh everytime I see a picture of her." I guess that counts for something.

I'm not sure what you are talking about.

My wife does not have a bowl haircut, it's medium length and layered.

I don't know what Ann Coulter looks like, but if she looks like my wife, then she's tall with a toned, athletic yet still feminine body...and nice perky tits and an ass that most women would kill for.

And if you actually did know what she looked like and subsequently made fun of it on a chatboard, most people would think you were an asshole, wouldn't they?

Nope, that's not Coulter -- she is so oddly skinny, I truly think she's going to fall down on legs that simply disintegrate as she walks.  Big boobs, but they come off as especially odd on such a skinny frame.

You really must be retarded, jaron, since in that picture I didn't even have a bowl haircut and, someone else on this board commented that I looked fat in the picture (which I'm not, it was just the picture!)

By the way, I've never had a "bowl haircut", it's called a "bob"...which I don't even have anymore...

In fact, when we read that bit in the review, I didn't even really think you were referring to us, your description was so off base!

Big boobs on a skinny frame? Definitely not my wife. She neither has big boobs, nor a skinny frame. Which is quite fine by me.

The name was sort of a nod to Dupek's cute recent naming conventions. I guess "Sam Pulsize" was just sort of in my head because of my profession.

Are you the Jaron that wrote this review?

Your description of my wife on this chatboard sounds quite a bit like the description given in this review.

And if that is the case, this is perhaps the best example yet of Big Yawn being a joke. A reviewer signalling out a fan of the band and mocking that fan in a review of an album. Pitchfork may be snarky, but they certainly aren't that unprofessional.

"Look upon your fan base." And with that, they were transferred to the rafters of a dank nightclub, and Miller did look down at the sparsely populated collection of humanity. A near-forty-something with a receding hairline and pathetically wispy mustache and his anorexic bowl-haircutted wife look adoring at the stage where Miller saw his doppleganer play.

Actually, when black men say it, it's more like:

"Boy, you better take care of that fine woman, or I'm gonna get her from you."

Well, actually only a handful of black men have said something to that effect. I'm pretty certain it wasn't a "numerous" amount.

Maybe in 1970's Hollywood blaxpoitation films.

The educated, enlightened black man of today, like the black gentlemen you see walking around down near the 9:30 Club, would pronounce it correctly.

Furthermore, it is the haplessly inferior white Northern Virginia, Keane loving redneck that would fuck it up.

If I may interject here, I'd like to point out something I think the group will find relevantâ??or if not relevant, at least somewhat interestingâ??regarding the ongoing discussion. Well, to be honest, I doubt the group will actually find it interesting, since technically, it doesn't pertain to the current topic. What I'm trying to get acrossâ??if I can have your attention for just a minute or twoâ??is that I have nothing to say.

If you'll give me a chance to finish my point, Donna, I'll be able to explain. I mean, I hate to be rude, but I don't like to be interrupted when I'm in the middle of trying to say something, even if that thing has no value at all. I mean, I've been sitting here listening to all of you go on and on about every little thing. I would think you could do me the same courtesy by allowing me to dominate the conversation for a moment.

Let me begin by asking you a few questions: Don't I have as much right as anyone else at this meeting to be the center of attention? Why should I be punished because I have nothing to add about rising energy costs, plummeting revenues, and...all that other stuff? Why shouldn't I be allowed to spin 10 or 20 meaningless paragraphs of hollow verbiage to bolster my self-esteem?

Ladies and gentlemen, the fact of the matter is that I enjoy talking. Correctionâ??I have a desperate, pathological need to talk and, more importantly, to be heard by other people. Furthermoreâ??and I believe this notion to be of the utmost importance in understanding my overall lack of a pointâ??I am extremely good at talking for extended periods of time, to which I might addâ??

Excuse me! I'm speaking here! Thank you.

To begin again: To which I might add, in addition to these abilities that I just mentioned, I have also my verbosity, discursiveness, and long-windednessâ??to say nothing of my ability to string together three synonymous, redundant, and repetitive terms in a row, as I just did, twice in the same sentenceâ??all of this is of paramount importance to the point I am trying to make...

Excuse me! Will you at least let me finish my sentence?!

What was I saying? Well, it couldn't have been important. At the end of the day, I'm sure you'll agree that what it all comes down to is not so much that it all comes down to anything, but that it comes down to nothing. In summary, I have no summary. And in conclusion, I have no conclusion. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my opportunity to speak. For now I have had a chance to speak, and you have all listened to me. Having said that, I would like to add that, though it may go without saying, I welcome any responses you may have to what I've just saidâ??or more precisely, not saidâ??here today. I am open to any such comments at this time.

All right, then. Donna, you have the floor.

you know they're making a US adaptation (http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/ShowMainServlet/showid-22343/) of the office?  seems interesting, same character-types, very similar "situations" ... plus, steve carell as the boss....
