Did you realize AOL/Time Warner charges $10,000 each time the song "Happy Birthday" is used in a movie?
-
hey dlcjr1775, my birthday is 7/31 and I'll be 29 too!
Anybody ever see a show on their birthday? I think my only one was My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult in 1993 in Chicago. I missed Lush at the Vic Theater in 1994, which would have also been a good one.

I think my first one was actually this year:
May 1 @ Coachella.
Pixies/Radiohead/Kraftwerk under the setting sun in the CA desert.
It's set a pretty high bar for me & all future birthday celebrations

Only once - Tragically Hip at the Bayou on 12/5/89. I had tickets to the Buzzcocks/Carlsonics show last year, but a little too much celebrating the night before caused me to miss that one. :(

Drive By Truckers on my 37th, this year.

Well, then you must have a birthday very close to mine ~ even maybe the same.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that ggw is also close to that date...if not the same too.
odd
-
I saw Hanson on my birthday!
-
I was speasking of their show at Towson earlier this year. Will be seeing them in Richmond on Saturday, and probably in DC. Those dates will not be on my birthday.
I ran the Pittsburgh Marathon on my 33rd birthday, but I guess that's another thread. That particular race was a US Olympic qualifier race; I didn't make the team.

I know. Wasn't that early May though? I only remember because I thought it would make a heck of birthday party. I then opted for Coachella instead. I was wrong about ggw being early May - It's Pollard. Happy belated birthday to all the May Day babies.

No birthday greetings, but just a comment that i was feeling really old this weekend.
My long distance running college girlfriend sophomore/junior year just posted that she had hip replacement surgery. My orthopedist told me I'll need new knees in my 60's or 70's.
I also discovered that my high school junior year girlfriend/prom date died....in 2009.
-
Yikes
-
Knee replacement surgery is often not that bad....and in 10-15 years I imagine it will be even better... it’s also fairly common
Space, if you need someone to talk to there are qualified professionals out there... Unfortunately we have not yet filled our forum advice columnist position...
Getting old is tough but there isn’t a better alternative...
I recommend moving to Italy.

Just watched some great footage of them just destroying Zombie a few days ago... such a loss
And the scary thought of the IRA hit me
I was kind of young and oblivious when that was happenening
but I look at the photos of some of the bombings and I’m just aghast and my real fear is we could be in store for this kinda thing in our cities
If history has proven anything, people are easily convinced that it’s time to take up arms for the most meaningless things

Yeah. Nothing worse than finding a girl you were with died in a plane crash. Sucks.

Me. Yesterday.
Got drunk. Wineries, darling. Zsa Zsa style. Excellent restaurants, sweetie. Walked through a sad mall. Airbnbs destroy hotel rooms every, time.
Passed out at 8 pm . . . because, you know, old.
Trump winery, was fascinating. And a stop off at Montpelier on the way home, just for fun. I love that type of shit. Not as awesome as Monticello, but still cool.
The, end.

a 50 year old cartoon
(https://www.twincities.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/BobDylan_Peanuts.jpg)
-
Well it’s kind of depressing in ways but in other ways it’s fantastic...
Mixed feelings..I guess 80 means you’re close to checking out so that’s sad... it also makes one feel old themselves.. on the other hand he had a serious medical issue in early 1997... imagine if he had died then? Less than two years after Jerry Garcia...that would have been a body blow... instead we got nearly another quarter century of Bob Dylan...
It’s crazy for sure...
He is such a fantastic musician, poet etc
In 500 years I think only Bob Dylan and the Beatles will be remembered from this period.. George Harrison I believe famously said only Bob would be
-
I think the depressing thing was in reference to 'you can't trust anyone over 30'
-
In 500 years I think only Bob Dylan and the Beatles will be remembered from this period.. George Harrison I believe famously said only Bob would be
Klosterman wrote an interesting article on this. He thinks it will be Dylan or Elvis and more likely Dylan.
-
I think the depressing thing was in reference to 'you can't trust anyone over 30'
How exactly did you deduce "you can't trust anyone over 30" from that cartoon?
I took it as more, once you're 30, you're old... something that a 10 year old would think.
-
I took it more to mean Charles Shultz agrees with me that no rock artist puts out their best work after 30 so Dylan's peak was already behind him.
-
I took it more to mean Charles Shultz agrees with me that no rock artist puts out their best work after 30 so Dylan's peak was already behind him.
But that would be incorrect as Blood on the Tracks was recorded in 1974...
Great artists can stretch their peak
Bob Dylan was still bringing the songs for decades after turning 30
I think the problem is it gets harder to dress them up or produce them
And of course the context within which the songs are delivered changes
What Dylan lost wasn’t the ability to write great songs as much as the ability to connect with his surrounding context...with the times..to remain socially relevant.. from 1962-1966 the guy was just amazing reflecting back to society what was happening in ways people could process.. he had like an antenna and the songs just came to him from the world... I think he has said this himself.. after the accident if it happened or the break or getting married he became more insular.. the songs on BOTT come from within him..a completely different approach
That ability to reflect the context of the times through song probably does have a shelf life of about 30
-
Blood on the Tracks is not his peak nor his best work. I didn't say everything an artist puts out past thirty is total dreck.
-
I know I know it’s cool
Well I guess personally I think Dylan has many peaks that are hard to compare because they represent different ways of writing songs
The real folk...
The thin wild mercury music (65-66)
Americana (basement tapes)
Religious 1(JWH)
Country Bob (Nashville)
Domesticated Bob (New Morning)
Lovelorn Bob (BOTT/Desire)
Religious 2 (1979-1981)
Mystic Bob (1989-1998)
Now it is true his peak of relevancy is 1962-1966 and we all wish it could have gone on longer but the analogy I like to use is if he was an antenna absorbing everything around him ..well by the time he drops out he had just gotten too fried from all the incoming stimuli.. the antenna just got burnt out
-

My dog Theo becomes a teenager tomorrow.
Reminds me of the time we were visiting my in-laws one August when my kid was little. She was all excited and insisted on throwing our dog a birthday party.
Unfortunately, the timing overlapped with my alcoholic brother in law's 40th birthday. He was going through some tough times at that point, and folks other than my daughter, who was too young to understand the situation, weren't really in a dog birthday party mood. But the party happened anyway.
-
^ i have met Theo i can assure everyone he is, indeed, a good boy. now that he's a teenager he probably resents me saying that.

Some random dude named Paul McCartney turned 80 today
This story about him was passed along by Richard Coles one half of the Communards and now retired parson. He didn’t thread it right on Twitter so…
Talked to a man who recalled when his mother died taking his dad, who was devastated, for a break after the funeral. A friend lent them his beach house on the south coast. Early in the morning the man was standing on the verandah looking out to sea and thinking about loss … 1/4
…and bereavement. A voice said hello and it was the man in the house next door who was looking out to sea from his verandah too. They started talking and it turned out that the neighbour was also a widower. The man asked him if he could spare a moment to talk to his father, 2/4
…who was struggling. “That will take more than a moment,” he said, “bring him to tea this afternoon”.
And so it came to pass. They had tea and talked and wept and it was a deeply moving experience for all. At the end his father went to shake hands with his host … 3/4
….but he declined and insisted on a hug instead. Lovely.
He was Paul McCartney.
Many happy returns.

Gus the Fireman would be 138 if he was still alive. Though his birthday was in February.
I also learned today that he was married to the same woman for 56 years and had 0 children. A great loss for the world that he was the end of the line.
I wonder if that is enough to inspire a name change to Gus the Fireman-Hatch?

I think James Cromwell would be a shoe-in for the biopic they will make on his legendary career

I had a ticket to see Iggy Pop at Capital Ballroom in April 96 but couldn’t make it. A regret that became bigger when I recently discovered that Junior Kimbrough opened that show. Anyone see it?

The footage of those Genesis concerts from last year (or maybe it was two years ago) was painful to watch.

It’s bizarre how badly some people age. It’s not as if Phil was ever a big drug user. Yes he was an alcoholic for a while. I guess he took too many pain meds for a while. Played the drums too much…..wore himself out in the 80s….dude was everywhere. Even after reading his autobiography-and the last third was painful- it wasn’t clear to me what he did wrong other than marry the wrong women. His friend Clapton, for example was a bad heroin, cocaine and alcohol addict for two decades and yet aged nowhere near as badly. I think some people are just lucky (better genes) and are able to withstand the abuses more. I mean I think Phil was a relatively clean guy compared to the Keefs and Jimmy Pages of the world.
Anyways happy birthday Phil!

I mean, does anything matter other than luck and genes at this point? You're either dealt a good hand or a bad hand... One bad hiccup can fuck things up for a long time if not ever.

The study of longevity genes is a developing science. It is estimated that about 25 percent of the variation in human life span is determined by genetics, but which genes, and how they contribute to longevity, are not well understood.

It’s not just longevity but quality of life….

philip glass is 86 years young today.
bonus trivia: he was born in ol' bawlmore! his dad owned a record shop (wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Glass) doesn't say which one, or where) and was an avid consumer of music, which deeply influenced philip.

...the cell phone 50 years old today (https://wtop.com/tech/2023/04/50-years-ago-he-made-the-first-cell-phone-call/).
While cell phones would not be available to the average consumer for another decade...
Ha! More like 25 years for average Joe.
“I was not surprised that everybody has a cell phone,” Cooper, now 94, told CNN. “We used to tell the story then that someday when you’re born you would be assigned a phone number. If you didn’t answer the phone, you would die.”
-
Ha! More like 25 years for average Joe.
i'm an average joe in this regard: i got my first cell almost exactly 25 years ago (still have the same number). although we should specify that "joe" is north american. i distinctly remember europeans being way ahead of us in this regard. i was traveling to euroland regularly for work at the time and all my euro-buddies were shocked that americans had such a low cell adoption rate. we eventually caught up, some 5 years later.

Still have my 301 code from my first phone in 2004, and I hope to keep it if (when?) I move to California. I almost got a job at UCLA which has area code 310. I'd almost consider changing numbers to avoid confusion, but if it's someone I know my number will be in the contacts anyway.
Now I wonder what rando has my number as a 310?

ChatGPT turns 1 today
in one year, it's done quite a lot
Both Microsoft and Google made major pivots in AI since it's 'birth'
I'm scared at how much it will progress before it's 2nd birthday
I did just find CATgpt (https://catgpt.wvd.io/)
I do think the cat world domination thing is overdone tho
