YAY!
-
by the way, the reason they are playing here is to shoot a DVD
-
will that change anything? play songs twice...long directed shots?
-
When are these tickets going on sale? All of the other shows on this tour are already on sale.
-

that in itself is an incentive to go. is the taping for both shows or just one?
-

Very cool.
High marks to the 9:30 Club on that one! ;)
-
The last Wilco show at the 9:30 was being taped for live broadcast. A good amount of floor space was lost due to the set-up of cameras, crew, equipment, etc.
However, the same amount of tickets were sold, leading to an uncomfortably cramped show.
Will less tickets be available this time to compensate for the film crew?
-
I don't really care. I'm really looking forward to these shows. This year's Wilco show was one of my favorites of 2004. I wish I had a recording of it! I plan to attend both of these 2005 shows, assuming I can get tickets. It sold out really fast last time.
-
Still no info on when tickets go on sale? The rest of the North American dates are already selling.
-
I hope it's not until January. I'll be on vacation until then. :)
-

from their web site for both shows:
WILCO Pre-Sale begins January 5th @ 10 am EST
no public on-sale date as of yet.
-
How do I obtain the presale password for these shows? Is that something through 930?
-
Well, I think someone said you need to sign up for the wilcoworld.net mailing list. I did that a couple weeks ago, but I have yet to receive any mailings from them. Perhaps I missed the mailing with the pre-sale password? If someone would PM me the pre-sale password, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Ed
-
Does anyone know the Wilco presale password?
-
finding passwords for shows is a trick; a skill, like some video game sha-na-nas. some bands pick them out themselves, like beastie boys who mail you the thing in their "zines", while others leave it to the company who sponsors the tour, like duran duran, whose word was simply the first city they are playing their stadium tour: sunrise (florida).
i love it when people sell the damn things on ebay for ten bucks a pop; what a racket.
good luck on anybody just giving away passwords in here . . . you'll have to seek them out, like those archaic "easter eggs" on dvds.
-
uhh just go here: http://wilcotickets.musictoday.com (http://wilcotickets.musictoday.com)
then send a blank e-mail to the address on there and you get the password back right away.
this isn't hard to figure out people
-
anyone know how much tickets are gonna be? 30 bones?
-
there is a presale tomorrow on wilcoweb, and i have the password for it, but how do we find the password for tomorrow's 930.com presale? i don't recall seeing it in any recent e-mails.
-
i assumed it was the same, but maybe not?
-

**i meant there is a presale on wednesday on wilcoweb.
i guess it would make sense for the password to be the same. i'm just overly paranoid about getting these tickets.
-
what's the maximum number of tix we can buy for the 9:30 presale?
-
i'm probably assuming wrong. the 930 presale seems to be associated with tickets.com and the wilco presale seems to be associated with musictoday. so i dunno.
-
I've seen word that the password is definitely NOT the same as the music today one. So give, people, please?
-
I thought we all agreed that Wilco sucks?
-
Seriously, any word on the 9:30 password. It definitely hasn't come in any recent emails. I don't even remember what it was last time around.
-
So is there a password for the 9:30 presale or not??
-
There is a 9:30 presale, the password was sent via Volume the 9:30 snail mail newsletter.
-
Will the password be sent via a 9:30 e-mail?
I'm a subscriber, but haven't gotten the snail mail update.
-
shrug
-
I really don't think a password was ever sent out.
-
this is ridiculous. didn't get Volume and why is this all so mysterious?
-
i still haven't managed to get my new address (from a year ago) updated for volume delivery. haven't seen the newest one in stores, either.
-
Originally posted by sonickteam2:

No, but we agreed you can eat a big fat dick.
-
Well seeing as I have never received a volume in the mail, could someone please PM me the password (after you have ordered your tix of course).
Do any of you actually get the mailer every month?
-
Same here re pm. THANKS!
-
Ditto.
-
Me too please.
-
damn! It's not the same as the wilcoworld site. Anyone out there have it? Be so kind as to post it or send a private message when they have it. I just signed up for volume.
-
Guys, calm down. The Wilcoworld presale isn't until tomorrow, and they have a reserved number of tickets, so it isn't possible for the 9:30 Volume presale to sell out the venue before tomorrow's. Just go to wilcotickets.musictoday.com and sign up for the mailing list, then email them for the password and buy tomorrow.
-
Anybody get tickets? I can't get tickets.
-
Wow, the pre-sale sold out in three minutes?
-
this is gonna be a tough ticket...
-
I couldn't get tix either. It's now sold out. damn.
-
Keep trying. I just got two.
-

That was the pre-sale...just make sure you're around when the rest of the tickets go on sale.
-

I'm willing to try...I left my Volume newsletter at home. Can someone PM me the password? I'm good for it - I do get these newsletters! :)
At musictoday, 9:30 club show is not listed as one of the pre-sales yet. (I know, it says it at Wilco's site...)
-
Now that the fun is over, does anyone want to share the password?
-
How much are these tickets anyway?
-

I just sent the password to El Tee. If he or she wants to share it, they can. The tickets are $30, plus $5.50 service charge. I actually didn't get the newsletter, but I guessed the password because it was something very Wilco related.
-
Pleeeuz share the password, if nothing else than to satiate our cravings for the past hour
-
Nah, it's definitely sold out. Home page relays the same. I'm not trying all day to see if anything opens up.
-

move on
-
Just to be clear, Volume isn't the same thing as the email newsletter. A lot of people receive the email each week, but the 9:30 Club's "Volume" is the free paper newsletter that comes out the beginning of each month (also can be found in retail stores each month). As for Music Today- that too is a separate presale (not related to Volume) that comes from the band's site. I believe their presale is 1/5/05.
-
I was able to get tickets. Just subscribe to Volume. It's free and easy.
As previously stated, Wilco's pre-sale happens tomorrow, so go to their site today, send them an e-mail, and within seconds you'll have their password. Get them at 10, but be prepared for heavy traffic and don't give up. I had to sit there and click Enter for 5 minutes just to get past the first page.
-

Sent the blank email to password@wilcoworld.net a while ago and didn't get anything back yet.
-
Were they only selling the 2/23 show today? Isn't there suppose to be a show on 2/24 as well?
-
I still have never seen Wilco, so I figure now is the time. I signed on at 10 and was able to get a ticket.
-
if there is this much hype and mayhem over this band, why are they only playing 930, just like last time? good lord, wilco, go out and play a venue where you can make some money; isn't that the point of rock and roll?
-
I personally think that the 9:30 Club is still the perfect venue for them. I don't know what venue in this area they could play and still have the same feeling as they do in the 9:30.
-
This is the only time I've had probs getting a musictoday password. Can someone please pm it?
-
They are shooting a dvd, so wanted 9:30 club.
I'll bet they don't do Judas Priest and Blue Oyster Cult covers like they did at Madison Square Garden.

I noticed that too. I've been emailing them for teh past two days. What gives? PM pretty please.....again.
-
i've been trying to get the wilcoworld password for a few days now...coming down to the wire
could someone please pm it to me
-
I know it may seem easy but it hasn't been. I've tried obtaining a p/w through Music-Today and through the Wilco Ticketing but no response. Can someone PLEASE share the p/w for the Wilco Ticketing presale? I'm an ex-Chicagoan who's recently moved to DC and am dying to see them.
-
wow, that took all of 15 seconds to sell out. who are among the lucky few? wankers.
-
They were gone when I first got in at 10. This is insane. It has been years since I have not been able to get a ticket.
-
There is still a public sale. It wouldn't let me buy tickets for both nights (at least I didn't want to take time to learn how).
-
I got 2, and am notably not a wanker.
-
I got 2 for Wednesday, my buddy got hosed on Thursday, and was in at 10:00 on the nose.
-
this process blows.
-
How is this possible that it sold out in two seconds? Are there going to be any tix available at the general sale?
-
i got in right away and bought two for thursday...i may be a wanker but i have a faster internet connection. ha ha.
-
I managed to get 2 tix to night 2. I guess Ithought you could only buy one night at a time - when I went to place a separate order for night 1 it said I had to wait 5 minutes before placing another order. I guess I should have read the details to see if I just coulda purchased both nights in one transaction. Anyone know?
-
As far as I can tell, Wilco says they never get more than 10% of the avaliable tix for their presales (so usually no more than 100), I think the Volume/930 presale yesterday was only about 30 tix so that leaves a bunch still out there for general sale.
-
well, if anyone is willing to spare 1 ticket...
-
well congrats, semiwankers. i guess im the full on wanker for not getting through. will have to try my luck with the general on sale. lets hope im not stuck shelling out 100 bucks per like last time. *sigh*
btw live from the fillmore on wilcoweb.com is quite tasty.
-
I think when you have thousands of people scrambling for a couple hundred tickets, it is easy to see how it sells out in minutes. I expect the regular on sale to go just as fast.
-
Why are people speaking of the presale "yesterday"? On the Wilco site, it says...
"WILCO Pre-Sale begins January 5th, 2005@ 10 am EST via http://wilcotickets.musictoday.com (http://wilcotickets.musictoday.com)
Public On Sale will begin January 13, 2005 details to be announced."
SO - ARE THEY SOLD OUT or is this a glitch? I keep getting...
"At this moment, there are not enough tickets to fill your request. Please go back and try again. This does not necessarily mean that there are no tickets available. Other ticket buyers are trying to purchase tickets too, and are holding the available tickets."
-

They're not. <img src="http://www.btorocks.com/swag/images/reb-t-shirt02-sold-out.gif" alt=" - " />
-
9:30 pre-sale was yesterday. i do think the bulk of tickets will still be available for public on-sale, not likely to sell out as fast. 9:30 will sell anywhere from 800 - 1000 tickets for a particular show.
-

I tried the same, but I didn't want to risk losing the ones I had in my basket. I wonder if more people tried getting tickets for night 1.
-
only 10 percent of the tickets are available pre-sale on the wilco site. so, hopefully we can all get tickets when they begin general sales!

And when again is the public onsale date?
-
Wilcoworld.net website no longer has tickets. It's not listed on 930 site; and not on tickets.com. Where are you guys getting your tickets? Too bad some of the best recent shows involve passwords/secret handshakes/private relationships. I've seen 40 or 50 shows a year at 930 for the past four years. Guess I'm not a regular! Have fun, you lucky insiders!
-
i'm so jealous!! how did you get tickets?? i kept getting that stupid page about not enough tickets.... literally minutes after 10am.

according to the wilco site.
-
did anyone catch the baltimore show a few months back? i still cant get over how incredible the acoustics were in that place. i've never heard wilco sound better. the setting was weird, the stage was kinda bare and the lighting stayed the same throughout, but still, it sounded soooo yumm.
-
Originally posted by GabrielG54:

that was a good show, it helps to play in a symphony hall, they tend to have decent acoustics. i also liked the visuals they had running on the screen behind them, but then again, i'm easily distracted by shiny objects.
-
Also, if anyone, like me caught them at 930 earlier this summer and didnt want to buy the kewl poster and ruin it by holding it all night, Wilco is selling them:

yup, i was there. got 8th row easily thru the Wilco site pre-sale... BUT, go shutout trying for 930tix thru today's pre-sale.
shit.
-
what is the major malfunction here, people?!? there seem to be a lot of confused and out-of-touch people posting on this thread. i wasn't privy to the 9:30 presale because i don't pick up the "Volume" digest that had the password. who gives a crap about the 9:30 presale anyway as it's only for 30 or so tix for either night.
anyone who follows Wilco should know that, for the past few years, they ALWAYS do a pre-sale through musictoday for subscribers to their website. you e-mail musictoday, get a password, log in on presale day...simple as that. i've bought my wilco tix via presale for the past 3 years or so. furthermore, wilcoworld.net is always good about posting presale and public onsale dates/times.
if you're really into a band and don't want to miss out, try subscribing to pollstar, the band's web/fansite, or forums like this one and stop posting ridiculous and desperate pleas for people to "PM me the password dude". no, dude, get on your shit and do the legwork yourself.
-
thanks for the poster info. that will look great framed with my ticket stub. can i really get away with that hanging in my room? arent we supposed to stop hanging up favorite band posters at some point/age?
-
The addition of a frame legitimizes most decent posters. And as long as none of the following are nearby I think everyone will be fine: Sopranos poster, a tapestry serving as wall covering, black light related poster, or fraternity/sorority paddle.
-
Originally posted by GabrielG54:

Hell no! There are currently four framed concert posters and one vinyl LP hanging in my living room. It's all in the presentation.
-
ok. no sopranos or blacklight stuff. no lavalamp or stars on the ceiling either. but i already have a framed back to the future movie poster that i got for christmas. ill have to keep them on opposite ends of the room. or maybe put them both in some sor t of playroom that all the rockstars seem to have everytime i tune into cribs.

In case you didn't hear, music today's password email has been down for the past few days .....dude. I have no problem asking for a PM of the password if someone is willing to give it to me given these circumstances. Sure I could have sent them email earlier but I was also expecting it to work at least a couple days before the sale.

Often supplimented with an "authentic chewed on cigar" from the movie and can often be found at mall kiosks and Trick Daddy's house.

i wonder if that's a typo. where did you see that?

It was on the 930.com main page for a bit too but seems to have been fixed.
-
yay - got my tix - i suppose I have to listen to ghost a bit more now
-
Yeah, that was easier than I expected. Two tickets for the 23rd.
-
this virtual waiting room is bullshit. was on at exactly 10:00 and the page keeps refreshing every 30 seconds saying try again for 15 minutes now. just trying to get one friggin ticket for the 2/23.
-
I got two for the 23rd. No luck on the 24th.
-
That was pretty easy. Got my 1 for the 23rd.

I've been waiting since 10 myself. No luck.
-
Got my 2 for the 24th to go with my 2 for the 23rd that I got in the pre-sale last week. Now I just need to find two more to either night.
-
ive never been so pissed in my life
destroy the virtual waiting room

You don't have to wait in the waiting room. Just back out of there and keep trying until you're directed to the ticket page.

Has anybody been redirected to get tickets after waiting in the waiting room?

I was :D

Yeah, the virtual waiting room sucks. Fortunately, I figured out that I could just keep trying and I was able to get in pretty easily. Got one for 2/24 to go with my one for 2/23.

Hey ILLScholar,
Any chance you could share some of those tickets you have for both nights for those of us that won't get to see them at all???
-
I'm thinking of seeing some of these upcoming shows:
Ray Lamontagne at Iota
Bobby Bare Jr at Iota
Jolie Holland at Jammin Java
Neko Case in North Carolina
Centro-matic at DC9
Olson/Louris at Birchmere
I like all those people, for starters. Wilco only plays music off their last two crap albums, so sorry, not interested.

What is up with the new browser window that pops up on tix.com? That 30 second refresh was the longest of my life!
Ticket for Wed AND THURSDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank god.
Anyone on here have the last 930 show in MP3, SHN or FLAC format and would like to trade? I have a ton of live wilco and other bands and would make it very worthwhile to anyone who could produce a copy of the show. My bachelor party weekend started with this show and I want a copy (though not their best show).
Thanks.

Well nobody really cares that Person A got tickets for the first night, whereas Person B got tickets for the second night...yet these people feel it their need to share it with us.

Honestly I don't have any of their albums, so couldn't pick one. Problem is they have so many, where do you start. Don't know if we'll stay out that late on a Tuesday night, but sounds like an interesting show.
I did find a copy of the Centro-matic side project South San Gabriel, which is basically the Centro-matic guys along with Brent Best of Slobberbone (though he only plays guitar and doesn't sing). That one is supposed to be a bit more mellow than Centro-matic (and sounds nothing like any Slobberbone album for that matter). I like it a lot; to me it's a bit similiar to the last Sparklehorse album, which I also like a lot.
I would have guessed that they would be somebody you would like.

I dont care, ticketmaster is better considering you are getting raped in service fees regardless.

I got into the waiting room at 10 and called the 800 number, and by 10:15 someone on the phone told me all the tickets were sold at the PRESALE. I told her this wasn't the case, and she told me to call the club. I called the club, they said the girl was wrong, and so i called again and waited, and some guy on the phone said the show had sold out at 10:08 a.m. Meanwhile, NOTHING happened online.
So the waiting room actually is just for waiting around and letting other people cut ahead in line???
That is SO UNFAIR. What is the use of a good rock club with good acts if its impossible for fans to get tickets?
-
UGH.. no wilco tix here. I can't say I didn't try.. but I guess that's one of the downsides of being a fan of popular bands.
-
eddie posted this when during the beastie boys went on sale, it explains why the waiting room shows up during ticket sales. obviously the red sox virtual room didn't show of this time.
the best tale of buying beastie boy tickets was the person who got through via dial-up with so many boasting of having fast T1s and still getting shutout. it's about karma and luck sometimes folks... and stopping your clicking
So, we got a non technical explanation of exactly what transpired today:
The Beastie Boys 9:30 and HFS links sold out in about 15 seconds, the Beastie Boys link sold out in about 35 seconds. The reason for the "Red Sox Waiting room" was because of the extremely high demand. It had no interference with the sales, but was used merely as a holding area for the thousands of people that were clicking on refresh after the event had already sold out. Basically, we have several boxes/servers that are used to service traffic on Tickets.com. Because the demand was so much greater than normal our 930 box sold the 600 tickets to those lucky persons and then got filled up with traffic from everyone else still attempting to get tickets. Then once our 930 box filled up, we had a predesignated back up box, a "Generic virtual waiting room" box that took over and handled the excess load. The traffic on Tickets.com was so great that this box filled to capacity as well. Once this happened the back up to the Generic VWR box is the "Red Socks Virtual waiting room" box. Although the "Red Sox Virtual waiting room" was confusing, it was a necessary back up to the back up that prevented the Tickets.com system from crashing. This all occurred in a period of 35 seconds, so although patrons believe that they were unable to get tickets due to technical reasons, the truth is that
the performance had already sold out at that point when the virtual waiting rooms went into affect.

The only weird thing about the waiting room was that I got put into it at 9:56 or so..tickets couldn't have been sold out then, so it must have been some kind of rotating/cycling lotto system, at least until 10:01:30...
Gotta admit, as much as I love Wilco the prospect of another sold out Wilco show at the club (packed, angry young men guarding rail space like Navy Seals) wasn't too attractive...
-
Excellent! More rail room for me to guard with my laser-like glares!

i saw neko case, like, open for nick cave years ago for like $0 cuz she was an opener...pretty cool huh? [snort snort]
anyway, why don't you just go to see her in baltimore? she'll probably play the same shite there as she'll play in NC.

They were REALLY fun on the Being There and Summerteeth tours. For some reason I was more on the Jay Farrar side right after the split so I didn't catch the AM tour. I woke up after that. In fact...I think the Summerteeth tour might have been the best, drawing off those three albums.

Gotcha beat. Haha.
I saw Nick Cave for free at a booksigning in 1989.
And Neko Case at Iota circa 2000. May have been earlier since I bought her first album in 1997 (but didn't think much of it and sold it). And we made out after the show.
I would rather see Neko in NC because it would be part of a visit to see old friends, and is on a holiday weekend.

Not completely different
Neko Case and Jeff Tweedy both sing on the Johnny Paycheck tribute that came out this past year. And they both have Chicago ties.

Wilco tickets are already selling like hotcakes on ebay. Fuckin scalpers waste no time.
-
yeah...tons have already been sold today for $200/pair. i had to chuckle because one of the idiot scalpers actually had his/her tickets listed as "PIT" tickets. like the 9:30 has an orchestra section or something?!? then i got pissed when i saw "frontrowordie" who has 18 tickets listed at $150 a pop "buy it now". what an asshole.

I don't know whether to be more annoyed at the scalpers themselves or their market of jackasses who are willing to pay that much.

Jimmy Buffet - ha, ha
Wilco performance lacks passion
By John Lovell / Managing Editor
Published: Monday, February 21, 2005
The moment I stepped out of my car, I couldn't help but think I had mistaken the Wilco concert I had driven to for the Jimmy Buffett show later that weekend. Fat, middle-aged men flashed me drunk, dirty looks while tail-gating at the back of their SUVs with coolers of cheap beer - I couldn't resist pointing out the stereotype. I was struck with more disbelief as I watched an older crowd outnumber the younger one.
When Jeff Tweedy and company finally took the stage and broke out into their first song, I started to think I really was at the Jimmy Buffett concert.
The tail-gaters were now sloppy; they were in the aisles yelling with all the might and power their beer bellies could muster. Some of them even wielded flaming lighters over their heads.
Where the hell was I?
I was at the Pompano Beach Amphitheater, and I like to say it's the place in South Florida where old bands go to die. When it's not being used for summer pop-punk festivals, it's where soggy '70s and '80s rock stars wash up.
How inappropriate for a band like Wilco, who has made quite a name for itself in the college music arena for several years now with the albums Summer Teeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. (Let's just forget about A Ghost is Born.)
Tweedy knew exactly what I was thinking after he encouraged the crowd to rush the stage. He even made a comment about the Jimmy Buffett atmosphere - damn, I love it when I'm right!
The evening went on, and the band changed pace shortly after Tweedy invited the crowd to come closer. After a slow start, this was most welcome. I can't complain about the band's execution, which was just as crisp as its studio recordings. The song selection was a democratic mix of the greatest releases; it even included a couple of songs off the Mermaid Avenue Billy Bragg/Woody Guthrie projects : "California Stars" and "Somebody Some Morning Sometime."
I have a rather large dilemma about the concert. All the songs were memorable, clean and well rehearsed. There was something amiss however, and I think it was Tweedy. I felt that the set was passionless and could have used more sincerity.
The bittersweet songs like "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" and "A Shot In the Arm" lacked the heartfelt melancholy I'm used to hearing on the albums. The same goes for the band's faster and harder rock tunes like "I Am the Man Who Loves You" and "Spiders (Kidsmoke)," which is the only song worth listening to on A Ghost is Born.
I think they were afraid to be dangerous and ended up being too polite. As nice as it was to see a chummier, chattier, plumper Tweedy, I would have preferred a more aggressive approach to the show.
The finale was also rather uncharismatic. I would have been content walking away from the concert with some of their more endearing songs, like "How to Fight Loneliness" or "Ashes of American Flags" ringing in my ears. Instead, they encored with a few dull songs for which I could not have cared less.
I was a little disappointed, but it wasn't a terrible performance. Wilco should reevaluate itself and its attitude toward the music it plays live before the band ends up actually belonging in such a deplorable place as Pompano Beach.

Damn; 10:00 start time? Guess those of us taking the metro home will be fucked if they go on that late.

That's a completely normal start time for a band with one opener -- this Club is the best of any in town at trying to be aware of Metro's hours, but bands are bands and they don't give a fuck. Chill and enjoy. You're lucky, a lot of shows start later...

has anyone else been checking out the setlists at wilco base? seems like they are changing it up a teeny bit, while sticking with the majority of the same stuff off ghost and yhf. changing around mermaid songs. anyways, over the 2 nights, i hope there isnt too, too much repetition. what are your hopes dreams and desires for the next 40 hours? seems as if we will be getting a 25 song set night, both nights, so thats pretty fuckin hot.
-
Anyone ever heard of the opener (Deholtz!)? Any word on whether I should sacrifice a trip to the gym to get there in time to see them? Always a little wary of any band with unnecessary punctuation in their name. But at least it's not an umlaut.

fyi - both shows will be webcast live via wilcoweb.

looks like i'm not going to get my favorite song, "I Got You (At the End of the Century" ... sucks ...

Needed to see them Summerteeth era and before for this...they used to play it all the time. Personally I'd like "That's Not the Issue", although I think I've seen them play that one (can't remember).
It's too bad they're not playing more of an even mix of old and new since they've already toured in support of A Ghost Is Born.

I liked the opening band alot. They were fun, a little silly, and had a sound that was a little different from your standard indie band, and I liked that.
I found last night's show, um, boring. It was hard to separate the crowd of screaming-along-singers and frat-boy-bad-dancers from the actual performance, but I did feel the performance was uninspired, the stage set (curtains, screens, etc) upstaged the band, and the whole thing made me yawn. The songs I really like (war on war) i found myself unable to even force myself to dance to, and the slow songs seemed to drag on forever. I am really pissed I didn't just sell my tickets.
On another note, what was with that roped off area in the balcony? it was virtually empty, and of the 7 or 8 people in it, one had to be some woman who stood at the rail talking so loud during the set that we could hear it from below.
-
If people find Wilco so boring, why do they always go to the show and then gripe about it afterward?
I thought it was a great show. Maybe my entertainment standards are low; I blame reality television.

Didn't make the show but listened on Webcast and damn they sounded thin and tired for most of the main set...having heard about a few tirades Tweedy threw at fans in Florida and NC, I wasn't surprised to hear him crack at the South also, but sure glad I didn't get tix and saved the dosh for Escovedo next week instead! That being said, hearing Remember the Mtn Bed was wicked.

I'll admit I'm not that familiar with Wilco, but I thought they were pretty good last night. I was a little bored at first, but as the night went on they held my attention more and more. I didn't see the dancing/singing frat-boys that chimbly saw. In fact, I was a bit surprised at how quiet and still everyone was, considering how excited everyone was for these shows.
I liked them. They were good. I'm glad I saw them at the club. I'm not sure I need to see them again.
-
In fact, I was a bit surprised at how quiet and still everyone was
having seen Wilco many times over the years I can tell you their live show used to be a lot more fun
-
i thought wilco was amazing last night. the band, including jeff, was obviously enjoying itself, and they sounded great. i'm surprised that so many people are reacting negatively to last night's performance, becuase i can honestly say that it is one of the best concerts i have ever experienced.

Again as someone who didn't go (but is a big big fan) but just listened on Webcast, just because someone notes that the band sounded weak isn't a diss, a negative diatribe, a slam....it's partly because I've heard them many times before with lots more energy and tight playing, and partly the hype accompanying this show probably heightened expectations and scrutiny, but that's another story..
-
-
this was either my 8th or 9th time seeing wilco. it was definitely one of the better times i've seen them recently. the last two i saw them were at constitution hall and meyerhoff symphony hall, and there's no question the 930 suits them better. or maybe it just suits me better.
first off, they will never match their performances from the jay bennett era. that's a plain and simple fact. when they toured on summerteeth and mermaid avenue 2 , those were just amazing shows. now they are a bunch of hired hands, a very well-oiled machine. and sorry, but those songs from AGIB just aren't good. hearing "jesus, etc."/"war on war"/"ashes of american flags" consecutively in the middle of all the new songs really drove that point home.
and wilco shows are basically two shows now. the initial set, the songs you will hear, and the encores, the songs you want to hear. "candyfloss," "new madrid," "she's a jar," etc. all told, though, i had a pretty good time. tweedy seemed to be in a good mood, nels cline is a damn good guitarist, and i managed to avoid the frat boy/yuppies. and for all the talk about headlining bands playing for only 35-50 minutes, wilco certainly isn't one of those. 27 songs, almost 2 and a half hours.
-

did they play passenger side?
-
yeah, they played "passenger side" during the second encore. i've never been a huge fan of that one and they play it EVERY TIME I SEE THEM.
-
Personally, I'm a late bloomer when I comes to Wilco, and I definitely like the new direction. And I don't disagree completely with their decision to steer clear of most older tracks, since there is such a conflict of sound.
But I can't help almost wishing they would play a set of all older material. Some of those songs are just made for a live show, and I'm always bummed when they don't play Box Full of Letters.

I am going to preface this by saying I am not the biggest Wilco fan in the world but bought their last 4 albums and know their work. I had never seen them before and all I can say is that I was underwhelmed.
I actually enjoyed the more "rocking" songs that a lot of long time fans don't. Maybe it was the guy directly behind us shouting that he was at the Florida show every time Jeff made a joke; maybe it was a late night for me after a week of late nights; maybe it was the increadable hype for this show; maybe it was the fact that I have not seen this many ball caps since attending Spring Training. Whatever it was the show just didn't strike me as great. I hope others really enjoyed it.

10 years as underground legends, both kind of americana (a bit of a stretch for REM), a cultish fan base who gets a bit peeved by their sudden change in style after 10 years of similar-sounding stuff
only big difference is that REM was a huge success by "green" and turned even more commercial on "monster", while wilco just went indie-er with YHF and their latest
-
i was thinking along the lines of the fanbase changing, plus books are being written about them,
-
I think Wilco has gone more mainstream with their new sound, just like REM did.
Indie IS the new mainstream. Clearly, it appeals to more of the masses than Americana, or whatever you want to call Wilco's first two (perhaps three) albums.

good grief what a useless conversation this has turned into. wilco is a band. a good band. they make good records. and they try different things. on top of it all, they sound incredibly good live, independent of sound selection - and are one of the tightest performing units you will ever see. just take it for what it is and stop whining.
-
Indie is the new mainstream? I would disagree there. I would say hip-hop is. And has been for quite some time.
-
I'm not a wilco uber-fan ... any guesses on the overlap for tonight from the more experienced?
-
that's not totally accurate. they played "theologians" during the main set and "she's a jar" during the encore.

This is a discussion board about music, hosted by a live music venue. It's what we do, discuss shows. Okay, we discuss other things as well, but I think it's fair to say the central and largely agreed to mission of the board is for discussion of upcoming and recently seen shows.

sounds good, but you forgot to add: "and how much we hate the bands and their fans"

And then, of course, there's slagging on each other, and SLAGGING on newbies. ;)

i think wilco rocks! and is one of the best live bands i have seen... so lick it! ;)

Christ, even mainstream Spin Magazine has swtiched their format from nu-metal and rap/rock to indie rock.

The show was great. The set list was fantastic. Jeff was funny as shit. Almost as good as last year's performance, if not AS good. I haven't read the previous page, because I don't want to read Rhett/Sam's ignorant comments, but didn't the scary photo of the face you were supposed to make during "Kingpin" crack anyone up?

The Killers and Interpol and The Strokes aren't indie rock, my friend.

They are indie rock to the extent that the current incarnation of wilco is.
I was thinking more along the lines of Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service, Shins, Franz Ferdinand (live! on the grammies!) etc.
I mean let's face it, indie rock has won the battle. Bands like Korn and Creed are history, indie is the new mainstream.

Maybe the crossover appeal/mainstream status, but definitely not the music or what they're all about... I think "AM" was their REM record... AM sucks Passenger Side sucks Fuck everyone who sang along to it last night
-
ok now this thread has officially turned into a useless conversation...but since we're on the topic isn't "indie" used as glibly and nonsensically as "alternative" was in the 90s? Or, who the hell cares anyways?

Ask average Joe on the street who Interpol is, most likely answer is "isn't that the police thing?" Ask them who Toby Keith, Alicia Keys or Gwen Stefani are, and they'll probably make some connection. A band like Wilco is about as popular as the Replacements were 10 years ago. They were visible enough to headline a place like the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, but their records weren't even going gold (much like Wilco). They have a devoted fan base, and are just hip enough to be cool but still be liked by a fairly diverse audience. That being said, we are in Washington DC...not Lawrence Kansas or Salt Lake City. Indie might seem mainstream in an urban area like this, but truly it is FAR from mainstream in many other places.
-
You'll have to check with Rhett, he is the apparent authority on all these mainstream indie bands.

Whatever it was the show just didn't strike me as great. I hope others really enjoyed it.
Shit. I am wearing a hat tonight but its only because I'm a dirty boy and should have washed my hair.

seven pages of wilco "discussion" and not once has anyone mentioned the incredible musicianship of nels cline and glenn kotche? these guys are not hired hands but amazingly skilled musicians with diverse backgrounds ranging from free jazz to folk to experimental noise. even if wilco's songs sucked, i would enjoy watching them to hear cline and kotche's mastery of their instruments.
that said, i enjoyed last night, though it took me a while to get a decent spot (and i work at the club!). i don't think they sounded tired at all. then again, i also don't understand the hatred for "a ghost is born." i think it's a great record with only a couple of unmemorable moments. IMO, there are very few bands who can straddle the line between beautiful songwriting and textural explorations. which bands are cutting loose with fuzzed-out psych solos on a major label record?
i'd go see 'em tonight but i have a date with unrest.
-

i appreciate nels's guitar playing, and glen's drumming provided many of the highlights, but i maintain that the current lineup feels somewhat forced. it's jeff tweedy and his backing band of guys who can do exactly what he wants them to do. that's fine and all, he picked some great people, but it's still very, i dunno, academic, or something like that. those summerteeth/mermaid ave.-era shows may not have been as technically dazzling (although jay bennett could BRING IT), but they certainly had another element that the current shows are lacking. i realize that this is a different phase for the band, and that obviously plenty of people are digging it, and i had a good time myself, but still.
-
i see what you're saying...i think what is missing is the spontaneity. wilco does seem to be much more calculated these days.
how about this? john stirratt, who has been in the band since the beginning, doesn't get the recognition he deserves for what he brings to the band. much of their pop element comes from him (check out the autumn defense).
tweedy is damn good at surrounding himself with the right kind of musicians to take his ideas and run with them.
-
I thought the Thursday show was very good -- all in all.
It seemed to take them a long while to hit their stride, but once they did, I thought the show was excellent. Right up until that last song. I can understand Tweedy wanting to end with a "message," but.......well.....whatever. I thought ending on "Don't Fear the Reaper" would have been fine.
While Tweedy was in the right to call-out the guy who yelled "you suck" to the Dietholz, I think that guy was just vocalizing what a lot of people were thinking.
The club was selling tickets when we got there just before 9:00.
-
I have to agree. Once they got all their Ghost material out of the way the show took off. It was a surprise to hear Kingpin and Outta Sight. The onlder material sounded quite fresh. By far the best I myself have seen from them.

Wilco, Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse have all cracked the top 20. Interpol, Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service, Strokes, and I'm sure others have all been in the top 100, I'm sure.
My point was that by putting out an album that was more "indie" than "Americana", Wilco was advancing more toward the mainstream than retreating from it. And I'm sticking with my point.

i thought it was a great fucking show ... while i would have preferred a set with older rockers like casino queen and end of the century, i know that this isn't the same band, and they just put on one hell of a show ...
the best way i could describe it is "mature," alot of shambling songs played with great attention to detail and a couple tips of the hat to their old days (outta sight being one of the highlights)
two and a half hours and 27 songs did not seem long at all, i really liked the two encore format.
the openers were really bad, but they were upbeat and chipper guys, so it didn't matter [cough] ... i mean, you're the bloated king of alt-country/americana and could choose basically anyone to tour with, and you choose these guys?? how great would it have been to have my morning jacket or drive-by truckers up there, just would have made the night incredible ... that said, you just can't heckle the band and tell them to shutup, really rude
lot of baseball hats (more than i can remember seeing at the club), definitely a different crowd than i'm used to there, but i didnt see any fights or anything like that
for those who went both nights ... how'd thurs' show compare?
-
wilco sounded better than ever last night...IATTBYH was f*ing great, as was kingpin. i definitely attribute their new-and-improved live sound to nels. he's and absolutely amazing guitarist...last couple of shows i've been up front and could appreciate his virtuousity up close. but, unfortunately, last night i was relegated to the back with the npr mics. if you want more proof of the power of nels, check out wilco's recent Austin City Limits performance.
beyond that, tweedy sounded really good last night, the band was tight, and i dug the setlist. in hindsight, i really wish i had gone wed night too.
oh...and speaking of the meatheads at last night's show, when they started playing kidsmoke there was this douchebag jock with his douchebag sidekick who was telling his buddy (at full volume, mind you) about the awesome guitar break and proceeded to air guitar and sing the guitar part (keep in mind, the band hasn't even gotten close to the break; in fact, jeff was still singing the first verse). he talked through the rest of the song but damn, when that guitar break came, he was a madman...pumping his fist in the air and totally impressing his friend, i'm sure. what a fan!
-
Nels may be a great guitarist, but Bennett was a hell of a lot more fun to watch.
-
I'm listening to it on the internet now and so far, it's great. Aside from this one girl who shreaks before and after every song. I feel sorry for the person next to her last night....
