bearman was also up on stage.

B&S were indeed wonderful.  i can't believe that anyone can walk away from one of their shows without a big stupid smile on their face.  stuart was indeed in rare form.  i slightly prefer their last show at DAR, but not by a lot.

YLT oscillated between ok and annoying.  they had some really nice moments in the first half of their set, but the second half was littered with self-indulgence.  kaplan's attempts at guitar-god antics during those 5-minute noise-solos just bugged.  it wasn't technically impressive - i can play that shit.  if the show was in a small club packed with their faithful i can see them getting away with that... but it wasn't.  for me, it was 20 minutes of good music stretched out over an hour.

spent the evening in the company of the boardee formerly known as julian.  his version of america lives on.  while hanging in the pit we engaged in a hardy game of "spot the non-caucasian"... we both lost.  he sends his greetings to miss p, vansmack and walkonby.

once again, got in and out of MPP with zero hassles.

Curses, once again foiled by my arch nemesis the playlist.  Got to the club last night, only to find out, the band had other plans for pre-show music.  Guess that means I'll just save that epic 10 minute extended version of Ultravox "Dancing with tears in my eyes" for another night...

Glad I stuck around, OMD were just great.  Andy's voice is great shape and he bounces around the stage like a man possessed when not singing.  And yes while for purely selfish reasons, I would have liked to hear more back catalog songs, the new album sounds great upon first listen.  They play several songs I own on 12" vinyl, including ending the night with their first single "electricity". Current EMD acts should take note, two keyboard players, bass and a live drummer and not an laptop or iPad to be seen on stage.

The opening act not so good...

Sweetcell, couldn't disagree more on Yo La Tengo but you probably figured this. ;D A little Ira guitar noise never hurt anybody. Like with the Feelies, their sets are a long exercise in tension and release with that 12-13 minute closer being the perfect cap.

And that is a bummer, Kosmo! I know how much you were looking forward to that DJ set.

Just popping in to say that I saw that B&S show at DAR on free, last-minute tix and was bowled over by how much I enjoyed it, way more than the show they did with the new pornos a few years ago and a black cat show a decade ago

YLT are one of the worst bands I have ever heard.  The guitar solos are indeed pathetic.  If they removed that guy from the band they would improve.  I heard this song on the radio the other day that was an obvious "Monster Mash" tune rip-off.  I was like I guess this vocalist is so bad that they would never sell enough copies of their song to be worth to sue.  Than I heard it was YLT and it all made sense.  Worst guitarist and worst vocalist in one person.

I wonder why great bands like Belle and Sebastian and Beach House have YLT open for them.

I saw B&S in Montreal & was envious at those on stage. I couldn't help it, the moment presented itself and it was more fun than you can imagine. I love that band so much.

Yo La Tengo have become hit & miss for me lately. I love their music but that wasn't my favorite.

Seth, thank you so much for FWB and the VIP bar. Holy cow did that make the night for me & my buddies. Truly Merriweather is one of the best outdoor spaces now. Great job.

kind of funny reading Atomicfront's comments about YLT

in the late 90s these 2 were probably in my top 5 bands going...for a while Belle and Sebastian where doing everything right..tigermilk, those early eps, if you're feeling sinister and a large chunk of the boy with the arab strap are perfect.. i could listen to my wandering days are over forever... then it collapsed.. it was ugly.. Yo La Tengo, I guess if Atomicfront has listened to ELectropura and he doesn't like it then one can't argue with that but I think its great stuff as is the follow up I can hear the heart beating or whatever...

I think since about 2001 they've both nose-dived in terms of quality and in particular Belle and Sebastian......but if others enjoy them great..someone said he was excited about Legal Man so I guess different flavors for different folks.. I think that song is pretty horrid.. I kinda wanted to see them on Friday (have never seen Belle) but glad I went to see the Specials instead...because i loved every second of it..

Total agreeance, save one thing.  Can someone do something about the music back there?  Train and Nelly Furtado didn't really seem to fit the mood of the evening.

How is trolling to agree with another poster?  Stop using the press to decide what music to like.  I am sad I missed Belle and Sebastian but YLT being the opener made it easier to take.

I don't like the Lumineers because of the press. I looked up similar artists to Of Monsters and Men and listened to some of them and loved the Lumineers.  I knew of Monster and Men because I was checking out all the acts that were playing the Black Cat.

I know you like Yo Lo Tango because of the music press because they are one of the worst bands I have ever seen.  You couldn't have just listened to their music and random and liked them.  I just checked out their story seems the awful lead singer guitarist used to work as a music critic for village voice.  I get it now.  I could see liking the rest of the band but that guy is just awful. I mean the chick doesn't have a terrible voice.  They might be decent if they replaced him with just about anyone in the world.  Even a bad Kazoo player would be a major improvement.  Only an egomaniac would insist on singing when there is a passable singer in the band and he can't sing at all.  Only an egomaniac would insist on having guitar solos when he doesn't know how to play the instrument.

I thought they might just be awful live but after hearing them  on the radio they are awful recorded as well.
