i wish my experience had been like that!  unfortunately the numbness in my mouth wore off by the time i got home, and when i took the percocet (sp?) they gave me, i reacted badly to it and threw up.  since i couldn't keep food or pain killers down, it was not a good situation.

I still have mine, and two baby teeth to boot.  My disdain for dentists knows no boundaries.

When i had my wisdom teeth pulled out, all the dentist gave me was novacaine...and he sang along with a Temptations cd while he worked.  I got sent home with tylenol.

I totally missed out on all the "fun" of having one's wisdom teeth pulled out.

I've got all four of mine still, in various stages of emergence from the gum, but they are soon to be gone.  I've got the surgery to get rid of all four at once lined up for about this time next month.  NOT looking forward to it at all.

when i was knocked out for the procedure, i had a wonderful dream that i was ripley from the alien movies, kicking some serious giger creation ass.  the doctor thought i was a moron when i told him all about it through drooling laughter.

it's better to look good than to feel good, darling . . . and you look marvelous.

I have mine in a little envelope at home.  Got 4 out under novicaine.  One thing is you swallow blood then puke it up.  You will look like a chipmunk for the next couple days and depending on how they took them out all your teeth might be sore.  It was cool watching smoke come out my mouth when they drilled though!

You are so right about the swallowing of the blood and puking it up.  That was not fun.  But other than that it wasn't too bad, I was out during the procedure and then not much pain afterwards.

i have all four of mine, and i was told it was a 1/100 chance to have them grow in perfectly like that, but by the looks of it, there are more of us out there ...

I think I have mentioned this before somewhere but since it has relevance here:
All four of my wisdom teeth got yanked the day after getting my ass whooped in the pit of a Suicidal Tendencies show at the old 9:30 Club.  I was a mess.  In addition to the attendant damage and facial swelling related to the teeth being removed I had two black eyes and my right eye was swollen shut.  I was pretty hopped up on the knock out gas but my mom tells me that the folks in the waiting room were aghast at the sight of me stumbvling out of the operating room.

Got 'em pulled while in college...a month before Thanksgiving, which sucked for Thanksgiving dinner.  All four were impacted, which I didn't care about while they were doing the procedure, because the gas was great.  Best sleep of my life.  But because of the impacting, the guy had to drill a hole in all four of my widom teeth.  Then he inserted a metal pin, and began to rock them out using two pairs of dental pliars on either side of the pin.  I realized the pain a day later.  I remember I had this cool ice pack that wrapped around my head with velcro.  And you slid a little gel ice pack in these sleeves on either side of my jaw.  Made me look like Jacob Marley from A Christmas Carol.  Pain killers were awesome, percodan or percocet (sp?), can't remember.  But I still have them, and considering the bastards were bigger than I ever expected, always thought of making them into dice.

When I was a lad we used to pull them out ourselves, or if you were a puff, have big Eddie from Moss Side kick them out for you.....dentist my arse!!!!  ;)

Still got em....never gave me a problem. Why do we even have them? Is it from our primate days or are they related to our appendix seeing as that thing has no use either.

Think the original idea was that you would have lost a bunch of teeth by this point in your life so some more in the back to gnaw with coming in later in life would be useful to keep you living longer.

That is all I can guess, maybe the Straight Dope has the straight dope.

i have two.  i'm old.  i like it when that tasting smoke arises from your mouth as they are grinding away at your teeth, and the nurse calls you "honey" way too many times.

FOUR root canals done at the same sitting!!! Not having ever had any before I just told him to go ahead and knock em all out together. I assumed having survived Royal Navy dentists this would be a breeze. Actually, a root canal is more discomfort than pain. I do hate that rubber dam thing they shove in your pie-hole to stop you drowning or whatever it's for. Evidently my time spent as a diver in the Navy 'effd up the old teeth in that way, something to do with constant change of pressure on a regular basis. Either that or the dentist had a boat payment overdue!!!!   ;)

Makes watching Fight Club better when they explain how much blood you can swallow before puking...

Yeah mine were impacted too and basically they just smash them to bits with a hammer or tool of some sort (like hitman said) and then pluck out the chunks from your gums and jaw.  Nice.  I was pretty fucked up for a few days.  Doc gave me meds but it just didn't quite do the trick.  I was 15 or so and good pain meds were given out very conservatively in my house growing up....it sucked.

I remember my mother driving me home and the bouncing of the car was enough to make me scream.  I was miserable for about 3 days.  After a week, all was well.  I believe three were impacted.  Not one of my favorite times.

i guess if they're impacted you don't get to keep them cuz they bust them up to get them out?  i never really thought about it, but i guess that's why i didn't get mine.  Anyways all 4 of mine were impacted so they knocked me out.  i woke up in their little recovery room and they were like your mom went to get your medicine.  my mouth was all numb and i was starving so i had a frosty from wendy's which i threw up since it didn't go well with the anesthesia.  then my mom didn't want me to get "addicted" to my painkillers so she was trying not to give them to me...but she gave in   :p    i looked like a chipmunk for days and even when i went back to work, they were like "geez are you ok?" since i was still puffy and bruised...so getting my wisdom teeth out was not fun

I guess it depends on the severity of the impaction.  For mine, they just drilled a hole through each tooth, stuck a steel pin in there about a 1/8" in diameter, and rocked the tooth back and forth until it popped out.  I have all four of the teeth, and they are whole, not in pieces.  If my parents didn't have them with all of my other teeth, I would take a pic of them and attach.  Oh well...

I got all four of my teeth removed at the same time. Not a nice experience. I do think that the combination of novacaine and laughing gas made this little girl feel pretty good. I got to keep all the teeth too. Almost makes swallowing all the bloody gauze in my mouth (couldn't feel a thing) along with tylenol worth it.

They definately smashed mine up before they took them out.  A few days after the initial procedure I had to go back so they could pull out a chunk they left behind.  Bastards!

Have no idea what they did with mine and don't want to know! I just know that 2 were pulled out and the other 2 had to be cut out...all in the same sitting.

As freaked out as I was about it before surgery, it ended up being a rather odd, and not all that bad experience.

First off, I insisted that I be put to sleep because I was scared shitless but the doctor refused. Now, if I wasn't asleep during the entire procedure, I have no fucking clue what I was! All I remember is going down and feeling very out of it and then them arousing me to take me over to the recovery room. Felt like no time at all had passed. About a year later, my father was totally confused because he knew how scared I was but when he went to retrieve me from the recovery room, he said that I had a big smile on my face. LOL. Obviously, the man doesn't know much about good drugs.

Other than high as shit and very sleepy, I wasn't feeling much at all. Went home with a pocketful of drugs and went back to bed and slept for several hours only to wake up for dinner. Keep in mind, all 4 were extracted at once. I went out to the dinner table only to find that my mother had made a great big steak dinner for me. Yes, a very big, nice big juicy bloody rare steak which is just the way that I love it. It was a big one too! Took me well over an hour or more but I sat down and ate every last bite along with a big salad and all of the trimmings!!!

Never had any nausea at any point whatsoever. I was on percodan for a week or two and then percocent. Luckily, narcotics don't make me nauseous nor do I have any kind of addiction issues. Strangely, they made me want to clean and eat. Never understood that but have heard from others it did the same to them. It was quite odd because I could eat anything and everything once I figured out how to maneuver the food. The secret is in using your front teeth and allowing the saliva to do it's job and allowing it to help dissolve the food. Takes a lot of time but was well worth it because I ate like a fool the entire time! The only food that I had a problem with were sandwiches and that was because I couldn't open my mouth far enough to stuff them in. When there's a will, there's a way. I just smashed them down to make them thinner and still managed to eat every last crumb. I'm just glad that this was back when I use to be really skinny or I would have had to find a good diet once all was healed and the drugs were gone.

ya know I don't know what the deal was, but I had to go to the hospital and be put under for mine.  (I had braces so I am guessing something affected it).

I was a swollen chipmunk for weeks, and I had a wickedly painful reaction to the anesthetic when it wore off.

The best part is spitting out the goat stiches in your mouth once they start disolving after a couple of weeks.  You wanna talk about bad breath WOAH!!

Everyone else I knew had there's done in a chair with just local freezing.  Guess everyones wisdom situation is different.
