And 11% of music sales is hardly a monopoly.
Well Clear Channel owns all the shite ones.

The problem is, much of this country is rural or pseudo-suburban, and the only place to buy music is a Wal-Mart.  Yes, we're spoiled here (and DC ain't even a haven of record stores).  The idea that a single entity is essentially controlling what people even see on the shelves is disturbing.

Unlike some folks who I've met, who were listening to Pavement before they could walk, most of us work our way through what the radio gives us, and what we see at stores like this to Magazines, internet zines like Pitchfork etc.  But if you're a 15 year old kid and discover Pitchfork but then can't buy anything that they review at your local superstore, then you're discouraged from investigating more interesting music.

Handleman's been around for decades; their influence isn't really any different from what it has been. The difference now is the number of Wal-Marts and the manner in which Wal-Mart smothers other busineses. Wal-Marts that suck sales away from Towers cause the Towers to reduce their stock, usually by stocking fewer titles rather than fewer copies of best-sellers.

While a Clear Channel/Handleman merger would suck, just imagine - but not for very long! - a merger between Clear Channel and Wal-Mart
