the yankees have won 7 World Series in 50 years... considering they usually spend the most that should tell you something ---> spending the most doesn't guarantee shit

# of teams who have won the last 35 World Series:

Sure the high spending Yankees have "only" won 7 WS titles in the last 35 years, but no one else is even close to that:

3 - Cardinals
2 - Dodgers, Marlins (WTF?), Phillies, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Giants, Twins
1 - White Sox, D-Backs, Pirates, Angels, Reds, A's, Mets, Royals, Tigers, Orioles, Braves

It's no guarantee, but it sure helps.

Nor should you.  Game six is the one you should remember...

I've watched Game 6 every October 26 since 2002.  I don't always watch Game 7 on the 27th.

i would agree with that

to have a really good analysis i'd like to know how many of the past say 35 World Series winners happened to be the highest spending team and say within the four highest spending .. i don't have those numbers..

I've done that analysis before.  It might even be on this board some where....

· 2012 - San Francisco Giants - 6th highest payroll
· 2011 - St. Louis Cardinals - 11th highest payroll
· 2010 - San Francisco Giants - 9th highest payroll
· 2009 - New York Yankees - 1st in payroll
· 2008 - Philadelphia Phillies - 12th highest payroll
· 2007 - Boston Red Sox - 2nd highest payroll
· 2006 - St. Louis Cardinals - 11th highest payroll
· 2005 - Chicago White Sox - 13th highest payroll
· 2004 - Boston Red Sox - 2nd highest payroll
· 2003 - Miami (formerly Florida) Marlins - 25th highest payroll
· 2002 - LA Angels - 15th highest payroll

That's the farthest I can go back right now.

But also consider this:

In the last 16 years: World Series Finalists in terms of payroll:
-        Top 10 in payroll: 20/32 =  62.5%
-        Middle 10: 8/32 = 25%
-        Bottom 10: 4/32 = 12.5%
In the last 16 years:  World Series Winners in terms of payroll:
-        Top 10: 11/16 = 68.75%
-        Middle 10: 4/16 = 25%
-        Bottom 10: 1/16 = 6.25%

From a colleague on Facebook:

FOR SALE: a pair of floor tickets for this Friday's Nine Inch Nails show (with Godspeed You! Black Emperor) at Verizon Center. Selling for less than what I paid for them! Email or message me if interested. we now return you to the endless stream of cute baby pix...

Smackie is trying to be better about his public responses, so I'll post it here:

This is not a 140 character history of Twitter.  But every time I tried to stop reading it, I got sucked back in...

And each rejection letter starts the same...

"Dear Darrell, we're sorry to inform you..."

he's almost like a guy whose dream job would be to be GM of a team..

Yes.  I submit an application for the Angels GM job every time it's open and I'm not kidding.  I once talked to Arte Moreno about it over a few great innings at a spring training game in AZ and now I at least get a rejection notice.

I wish.  It's an email that starts "Dear Applicant...."

This ALCS is starting to get frustrating. I feel like Detroit has out-played Boston in 3 of the 4 games (1, 2, and 4) and had a virtual draw in the other one and yet its going to be tied up after tonite, with Boston having home field and me having an overwhelming feeling Detroit is going to lose it. Mehhhh.

Detroit has won 2 of the 4 games in this series and neither of them were pitched by Scherzer or Verlander. Arguably, that could be argued wither way from the Detroit perspective. My natural pessimism tells me we're boned, though.
