John Taylor, Duran Duran

I never realized Duran Duran were such great musicians. But in the last two days on this board, I have learned they have one of the greatest keyboardists and one of the greatest bassists of all time. Wow, such an educational board!

Well as a Bass Player I feel quite qualified to chime in, in no particular order:
the jazz cats..
- Jaco Pastorius
- Charles Mingus
- James Jamerson
- John Patitucci
- Victor Wooten
- Jimmy Haslip
as far as rock bassists my favorites are:
- Alex James (Blur)
- Andy Rourke (the Smiths)
- Paul McCartney (the Beatles)
- Zeta Bosio (Soda Stereo)
- Me

I thought that chump from Level 42 was the 'official' best bass player or something.
Not knowing enough to give an educated opinion...you'll get my opinion anyway...for a change! :p
I saw Primus at a HFS'tival many moons ago. I was not a fan of them whatsobloodyever, but really enjoyed their performance so I give a nod to that bloke. Walking in circles like he does while jamming out dem tunes was great to see.
Andy Rourke is a bit of a dick, but a great bass player nonetheless.
I hate to admit to to this...but I agree with Rhett, what's the deal with Duran Duran all of a sudden? They're just a bunch of pretty boys in a very average pop band....maybe I answered my own question with the "pretty boy" comment.

if you listen to the music critically, you will discover that Duran Duran is a serious, highly talented, original and very enjoyable band.
I haven't stopped listening to their earliest stuff since it came out back in the day. My musical tastes have evolved alot since 1982, but the albums that still blow me away today are the defintion of classic.
Unlike Rhett, I've never been attracted to men, so the Duranies' looks just aren't a factor here.
I wouldn't put the other 3 band members in my top five in their respective fields musically, although they are very good. But John Taylor's bass lines and Nick Rhodes's synths are special.

5) Andy Rourke -- The Smiths
4) Peter Hook -- Joy Division/New Order
3) Kim Gordon -- Sonic Youth
2) Dee Dee Ramone -- The Ramones
1) Kim Deal -- The Pixies

It's probably that they just played DC. Though the only question I've answered about DD is the band where the lead singer is not the hottest...and I was reminded that John Taylor is the hottest guy in rock, which would have sounded crazy to me just a couple weeks ago. But he is.

Just listen to "new religion" or "last chance on the stairway" and try to knock John Taylor's bass... Keep going on the same album and listen to "The Chauffer" and ask who was doing stuff like that with the keys in 1982 other than Nick Rhodes....
-
Les Claypool from Primus.....Hands down, not even close!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jah Wobble. Who else has propelled an entire album on his bass lines?
Sara Lee. Gang of Four and B-52s plus several others.
The bassist for Explosions in the Sky. He was the glue that held the show together. Great lines, and impressive chords.
Mark Sandman. 2 strings good, seven or more bad.
Gads, who did the Twin Peaks stuff? That was all baritone guitar/bass if I remember correctly.
As to Michael Balzary, Bootsy, and Les Claypool I don't really listen to their music much, so I can not really state how good or bad they are.

jerry only

i'll remeber the other after i post this.....

â?¢ Derek Forbes, Simple Minds bassist on their early abums, never fails to knock me out. Intricate and inventive without being noodly, he's the driving force behind all their best material and what a groove he lays down. I can't stand the oodles of noodle i.e. Claypool.
â?¢ Gord Sinclair of the Tragically Hip. Tasteful, melodic, never overdone, and rock-solid. He also does all the arrangements for the band and they have some pretty interesting ideas going on. I think they have one of the srongest rhythm sections around.
â?¢ Me'Shell Ndegeocello can really lay it down. Very powerful and soulful, she puts everything she's got into her playing.
â?¢ John Paul Jones. No explanation needed. Loved his collaboration with Diamanda Galas.
