They are moving to Arlington right by Sidehatch and also his hometown in New Yawk
I. Guess you can expect your home to appreciate?
The rest of us can expect higher concert and beer prices
-
looking forward to the price appreciation
Craker's little dive 1 bedroom is now going to be his retirement plan
Traffic will also increase...but hopefully most will just use the E-scooters
Also Long Island City is in fact in NYC in Queens and just across the East River from Manhattan...so 90 mins from my hometown
right in Ocasio-Cortez district..the irony of one the worlds largest corporations showing up in a Socialists district
I will say the opposition to amazon coming to your town is not the same as a Pro Sports stadium
a lot more money stays local and a lot more jobs
I think you do need to incentivize them with tax breaks, but the amout of taxes they will add to the coffers in just a few years in terms of employee taxes will surely make up over time...but what do I know
-
I am kind of glad it’s in the opposite corner of Arlington from me
Gotta say Crystal City can only improve as it is the most hideous part of Arlington by far....
-
hopefully this will turbo charge the Colombia Pike redevelopment
it's amazing that parts of CP haven't changed since the 50s/60s when it's right in Arlington and close to dc
I'm sure all our subsidized housing in my area has something to do with that
-
Meh. It's 25k jobs, but that's over 20 years. Also, the area has lost like 30k jobs in recent years.
I think it will overall be a good thing for the area, but I think the effects are being overstated. Traffic and housing affordability are already big problems. Maybe Amazon worsens it a little bit, but that would have happened as (non-Amazon) jobs came back to the area anyway. And again, this will be spread out over 20 years.

Could lead to other companies following suit.....
Did not realize Arlington had lost jobs...I think the county has lowest unemployment in VA but where jobs of its residents are is another matter
Arlington is a very small county so I think this could have a big impact...isn’t Arlington population about 200k?
-
I understand residents of Seattle have some perks like 10 minute package delivery
-
also...for every 100K amazon employee (and there will be lots) who get jobs and move close to Arlington...
you get more employment down the food chain
the Uber drivers/dry cleaners/restaurants/real estate agents/dog walkers/Water Sommeliers and so on
Plus all the sales/property/income tax that trickles through all that as well
can't look at in a vacuum
plus we just got Nestle too
Also, the area has lost like 30k jobs in recent years.
what area? this area has been BOOMING for a decade
waaay more than most of the rest of the country
that's why we pay $9 for a miller lite draft
-
Man I think I am fairly progressive but I cannot get with the idea that such a huge company moving to Arlington is a bad or small thing...
-
I work in Crystal City and I'm dreading to think of what this will do to my commute. Hoping Amazon doesn't offer free parking to these new employees and they use public transportation.
-
The lost jobs were the govt agencies and defense jobs that got moved due to BRAC. Estimates are that Arlington lost ~30k directly and indirectly. Crystal City alone lost almost 1mn Sq ft of leased space due to BRAC. Amazon is taking only 400k to start.
-
Who is Craker?

The Nats coming to DC was a big win naysaying be damned

Seems to me the "insiders" knew this was happening for a while. I'll take an Alamo Drafthouse though. Never been but I've heard good things.

-
I think we all knew...just not that they would split HQ2 in 2...that was a bummer and a bit bush league (or brass knuckle business)
-
I hear you but to start investing in a redevelopment project like that tells me some knew way in advance.
-
the area just south of Crystal City (potomac yards) has been in a MASSIVE redevelopment over the last decade and a metro stop is coming
so even with out Amazon...there was a lot going on right there
and it's inside the beltway about 1 mile from DC and DCA
redevelopment was going on with or without AMZ...now it's just gotten waaaay more competitive

drewtang, are you the same drewtang I saw trolling about libs on instagram?

I don't get this at all...Crystal City is kind of a cool name (although we all know not a cool place in reality)....National Landing is LAME Is Amazon pushing this name change?
-
I hope it doesn't confuse pilots hoping to touch down at DCA
-
apparently crystal city means something else in the Steam community

Since we're talking about Crystal's...here's my Crystal story.
Just before moving to DC, I was 30 and subletted a room in apartment where I lived with a bitchy, bossy 20something named K and a sassy 18 year old named Crystal. Crystal and I ended up, er, bonding, in part over our mutual dislike for the third roommate, and started fornicating a number of times....highlighted by us copulating on K's bed a number of times. This came to an end and I moved to DC and quickly forgot about it all. I know, my having no pics means this is just my imagination typing.
Six months later, and my new DC girlfriend is sleeping over the phone rings in the middle of the night. It's Crystal. She's joined the Army, but wanted to talk because she was lonely. I told her i had company and couldn't talk. Later, I received a letter as well. To which I never replied, but felt bad about it. I never heard from her after that. I wonder what ever happened to her. The end.

B+. good story, but lacked a full-on kvetch or financial savings tip to earn it the title of Classic Space. still, a good and worthwhile read.

Thanks. I sort of felt like I was logged into my Relaxer account when I was telling it....though he would have included more graphic details as well as mishaps.

Took our newborn to see Bohemian Rhapsody at an Alamo Drafthouse family friendly showing yesterday. I will be qoing every Tuesday for the rest of my paternity leave....

Having you checked Ancestry or 23andMe to find out how to get in touch with your Krystal love child?
On second thought, maybe she just aborted it because YOU NEVER CALLED HER BACK.

Though Relaxer himself would have bedded both of the roommates, at the same time.

Abortion jokes. Almost as funny as cancer jokes!

Was that your kid's first movie in a theater? If so, a nice start. Mine's most recent was Bohemian Rhapsody, and I'm a little ashamed to admit her first was A History of Violence, starring Viggo.

Space Ghost?

I have one more Crystal story.
In my final year as a middle school math teacher, in the same state as the other Crystal story, I had five math classes. These included one "low achiever" class. In that class, there were seven girls. FOUR of them were named Crystal. There were no other Crystals in the other four classes.
Math problem: What are the odds of that happening?

Hey now, I've been in a committed monogamous relationship for more than a year now, and the number of women with whom I've cheated on her is totally probably in the single digits.

Now they want to put a gondola between Arlington and Georgetown.

They've been talking about that gondola for at least a decade.
-
I'm down with it..won't help traffic at all, but would be fun

the no metro in G-Town has always been a poor decision...so I guess people could walk from the Roslyn metro to this...still would be a bit of a walk for most suburbanites...
Also if they are going to do it....this is the wrong side of the bridge to put it on (well for DC...good for Arlington)
http://www.georgetownrosslyngondola.com
Ok some of these questions I had are answered and I think a good solution
concluded that the best way to connect Georgetown and Rosslyn is on a straight line from 36th Street in Georgetown to Lynn Street in Rosslyn. The study suggested that the Rosslyn Station could be elevated over the roadway adjacent to the Metro plaza, while the Georgetown Station could be between the Car Barn and the Exxon Station on M Street. (although still kind of far from the 'heart of Georgetown)
I think it should go under the bridge and end up somehow a little closer to M and Wisc...but that would be pretty difficult to acheive
I'm glad they addressed this one
What will happen to the Exorcist Stairs?
The Exorcist Stairs will not be affected.

Yay! More jobs for Virginia
Amazon reconsidering New York hq
-
careful what you wish for...
-
Well they did it...amazon pulls out of nyc hq
-
Turn away 25k high paying jobs which creates a lot more jobs in the process. Nice work NY.
-
maybe NYC decided that $120,000/job was too much of a subsidy, and that they could invest that money elsewhere? would take a long time for the city and state to recoup that investment... and that's assuming that all 25k jobs were created @ $3B subsidies. 25k is also the max number of jobs they offered... say for <reasons> only half as many jobs were created (economic downturn, disruptive competitor, etc) - then those jobs would cost $240K each, aka the city and state may never recoup.
i don't blame NYC. amazon is the new shiny thing and people threw a lot of money around to attract it. i'm not sure the economics are there... so you're paying for - what? prestige? name recognition? NYC don't need none of that...
(FYI, Seattleites are OVER amazon. they run this town and folks aren't happy about it. city tried passing a head-tax on large corps this summer, amazon brought pressure to kill the initiative. they run this town...)

if the rest of the board didn't know why Hutch and I proudly call Arlington our home, now bezos wants some
Arlington has been named "America's Most Handsome City."
flattery will get you everywhere

surprised there aren't 100's of Arlington threads, for sure a happier place than Columbia, MD
Never heard this in all my time here, but made me chuckle
Arlington, the ‘Hoboken of D.C'

Hoboken 81% White
Arlington 71.5% White
Columbia 54% White
Springfield VA 55.5% White
-
Not sure I think Hoboken and Arlington are very comparable….
I will always think of Hoboken as Sinatra’s birthplace.
Personally think it’s stupid to compare places by racial makeup exclusively.
-
I was curious and looked up my zip
22204 racial/ethnic
top three groups groups are
White (38.4%)
Hispanic (27.4%)
Black (17.9%)
Springfield I get, was surprised by Columbia. Is there a road trip in my future. What are the top 5 things to do in Columbia
Although when I think Hoboken, I think YLT

median income
Hoboken 82k
Arlington 70k
Columbia 54k
Springfield 39k

2020 election results
Arlington, Biden
Hoboken, Biden
Columbia, Biden
Springfield, Trump

Hoboken was where frat brothers that couldn't hack the big city used to flock to... so, yeah. Arlington is a good comparison.
-
Yo la tengo are frat brothers
Hmmmm

Oh don't pull a space on me, there were obviously exceptions to the rule but I'd assume you know what I was getting at.
Not that there is any grit left to DC, but those were the same people that lived in Bethesda and Arlington in the late 90s/early 2000s that came to 18th street for a wild night in Adams Morgan capped off with a jumbo slice.
-
Well I guess I moved to DC from Arlington in 97
I moved back to Arlington in 2010 cause my kid needed space
From when I started hanging out in Arlington in 1993 I thought it was a great place to live and raise a family
It just had more edge in the 80s and 1990s…
That’s development for you I guess…I can’t stand Ballston area but that’s not most of Arlington …pretty sure you would be pretty happy where I live…we even have a beer garden within a short walk…
Maybe eventually I can have a party and you can come over

I actually don't know what we're talking about at this point and as of today would prefer Arlington/MoCo.vs..the city for precisely the reason you stated, a family.
But I think places like Hoboken or Arlington do get crushed by bros in their work uniform because they couldn't take the "roughness" of the city (at least that was the case 20ish Years ago).
-
I don't think I'd want to pay these DC tax rates.
Over $60,000 but not over $350,000: $3,500, plus 8.5% of the excess over $60,000.
I think it used to be higher.
