I have a couple of questions -- the Recher Theater is northeast of Baltimore, correct? How far, then, from DC? I'm thinking it must be over an hour (an hour fifteen?).
And are there showtimes about the same as 9:30 Club?
Since I'm asking, what's the capacity? I noticed Liz Phair sold out there, but is still selling at 9:30.

It's in Towson, near the Towson Towne Center and Towson University.

over an hour, it is in beautiful downtown Towson, with a mall and lots of shops and lots of places to eat around, and lots of juvenile skate punks
the venue is great, have seen 4 shows there, all have been fantastic

So 6:00 p.m. doors means the show starts at 7:00? Wow.....that's actually cool for me on a Sunday!

But of course it's not as great as the 9:30 club, which is the greatest venue on the east coast, or is it the whole world?
The morons who think the 9:30 club is better than the bowery ballroom are the true nuts.

9:30 Club is better than Bowery because it is 7 minutes from my home, and I've seen over a hundred shows there.
Why the "retort" on the value of the 9:30 Club; no one even brought it up?

the recher is pretty fun. i like that they put a second "bar" up near the stage. by bar i mean a few large tubs filled with ice and natty-boh. . .sort of like ottobar.

been there, would go back. its just...far. however, they do have the natty bo (as mentioned) and decent sight lines. pretty awesome for being in a suburb.

No, but that comment sounded particularly defensive, so came out of nowhere more than most. Especially since Pollard was really effusive about Recher...
Whatever, just wondering what got your ball rolling on that one.

Keep in mind the 4 shows I saw there were 2 GBV, 1 Sonic Youth and 1 Wilco, so some of my favorite bands, but I think I prefer it slightly over a show at 9:30 anyway, just my personal preference, not dissing 9:30.

Gotta say, I like being in Rechter better than being in 9:30 for a show. It's smaller, all floor (no balcony), far more "intimate." The Sleater-Kinney show there was nothing short of explosive. The Flaming Lips show there was an amazing experience. I guess it sort of feels like the lack of balcony means everyone shares in the madness...

I like the recher alot...of course, living 15 minutes away from it is a big reason...always seem to be able to get up near the front without any difficulty...all in all, not a bad venue

the Recher Theatre is probably the best venue in Baltimore that holds more than 50 people. The drinks are not very expensive, its in a nice neighborhood, plenty of restaraunts (including the best restaraunt The Melting Pot) and after the show, the Rec Room pool hall is next door!!!
They dont often have good shows though. But i just may go to Grandaddy/Thursday and BRMC all in the same week!

My point was there's no need to compare; if Recher is good, doesn't make 9:30 any less good. It's just helpful to hear it's a great venue; I'm more likely to trek for over an hour.

There's no need (and it's probably even unhealthy to a persons liver and obesity level) to drink six beers at a show...but people do it anyway.
If someone starts a thread entitled "Recher Theater" it seems perfectly natural on this board to use the 9:30 Club as a point of comparison.
My point was that I have to laugh when I read all of these posts on this board about how great the 9:30 Club. I don't go to that many concerts, but I fail to see the greatness of the 9:30 Club...for instance, I found Recher to be every bit as good as the 9:30, and Bowery Ballroom to be better.

perhaps it is most likely that venue comparisons are generally based on personal experiences/preferences and not professional observations.
for instance, if you have had your car broken into outside 930, you may not like it!
personally, the only gripe i have with 930 is that there really isnt much of a place to chill after the show to do anything. the back bar is an option (tho i have never gone down there) but if you park in a pay lot, they want you out ASAP after the show.
Fletchers, Recher and Ottobar all have places to play pool afterwards, plus i can take a cab :)
I dont like the Bowery at all, but perhaps its because the few shows i have seen there have been extremely overcrowded and hot. but perhaps not all shows are that way there.
my favourite venue of anywhere as odd as it may seem is Rave/Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee.

Sonick, you must chill in the backbar sometime. I end almost every show down there...though I think DC9 will call me occasionally now.

I have a hard time spending $5 a beer. Something about spending $60 on a bar tab and then having to drive home half drunk, all the way to Baltimore that turns me off.
Can i sleep in the back of your Escalade if i get too drunk?

Sure, you, your girlfriend and all your buddies can sleep back there! Up to about 8 folks, I'd say.
I understand the whole driving thing; I'm completely lame as I haven't driven to B'more for shows yet. (Well, not since the Hammerjack days.) And that's even for mid-week shows that include no beer. Just seems so long a trip! I'm working through it, though.

Do you mean the 9:30 club pay lot? I dunno if there are rules, but I haven't had them ask me to move my car after a show. Even when I've left it there into the wee hours.

No, The Recher is not northeast of Baltimore. It's directly dead center north of Baltimore City, barely below the 695 Beltway. The Mojo is in northeast Baltimore.
The Recher Theatre use to be the Towson Theater. An old movie theater. They've torn out the seating but still have the stage and added a bar and a few basic things to make it a live music venue. In the back (toward the entrance) they sell food but there are many half way decent restaurants in the vicinity and within easy walking distance. Personally, I don't like the Melting Pot but many others would disagree with me. Granted, I've only eaten in the one downtown and I've always found their food to be overpriced grease, which is far from my preference for food.
If you like Thai food (which I love) I highly recommend Thai One On, I think on Pennsylvania Ave. Yes, in Towson, not DC. It's right around the corner from the Recher but on the other side of York Rd..
BTW, there's a parking lot with free parking behind the Recher and across the street yet. (Not to be confused with the tiny band parking lot which is directly behind the building.)
I'm not exactly sure where you are coming from but I live about 15-20 minutes north of there and it usually takes me a good solid hour at least to get to the 9:30 Club. An hour and 15 minutes would probably be a good estimate, on a good day. If you are closer to Arlington or some other further area, add more time accordingly. (Odd how local traffic lights can make a shorter trip longer in comparison. Re: For me to Recher vs me to 9:30 Club.)

What drugs was the guy on? Those sight lines were pretty crummy!
Anyways I had great times there but it wasn’t so much the venue as getting away from DC..it was kind of like a mini road trip and the environs always seemed a bit more relaxed..

To be clear I loved going there but as I remember it the room was a flat To the ground rectangle narrower than the 930 and if you were in the back it was tough to see that well...
Who knows..it’s probably been 15 years since I went there..I think the last show I saw there was Guided by Voices...I saw Wilco and Ween there too
I just don’t remember ever thinking it was better than the 930 sight or sound wise...I think I do remember beer being cheaper as was always case in Baltimore

Their biggest competition should be the Ottobar
DC area people afraid to cut through the city of Baltimore night prefer it but as I recall it’s a good 15 minutes longer drive

I have missed the Recher...I just felt like the place was dying for years before it closed as they weren’t booking squat...kind of like the State Theatre last 5-10 years
