Has anyone else in Washington fallen further over the past two years than ol' Ted Leonsis? Ted has been reduced to pissing matches with the Post (Ted hates the Post just like Danny Boy, what a surprise) when the Post correctly reminds readers that the Bullets are pathetic and tickets are available for pennies on the dollar. Ted cries foul for some god forsaken reason and we're forced to read his tripe on his shitty blog. Plus add to the fact the Caps are about to miss the playoffs and will have peaked in 09 with the second round loss to Pittsburgh. That's what happens when you coddle tards like Semin and Ovie.
Until Ted shitcans Ernie "I fucking hate big men" Grunfeld, he'll have absolutely no credibility with Bullets friends in the metro area. Jesus, at this point, GW would beat the Bullets.
Ted needs to focus on improving his teams instead of getting into pissing matches with an emasculated post.
Fuck you, Ted.
This guy pretty much sums it up.

Thirty years of Wizards misery has built up years worth of valid criticism, duly earned. Leonsis should spend more time fixing his team than getting into playground shin-kicking contests with sports writers who, unlike Leonsis, are at least doing their jobs. Leonsis, it is now quite obvious, is too concerned with perception, marketing, gloss and sheen, and not concerned enough about putting good management and players in place. I had hoped the change in ownership would be a breath of fresh air for the Wiz: new owner, new management, new outlook. Instead, nothing has changed, except that we have traded Old Man Pollin for Ronald McDonald, relentlessly marketing and stuffing his bunk product down our throats. Honestly Leonsis, turn your team around before playing nanny-nanny-boo-boo with sports beat writers trying to make an honest living.

Have a kid. then you won't get so upset about such trifling nonsense.

Ted Leonsis is one of the nicest people I have ever had the privelge of knowing
He genuinely cares about how everyone is treated
He may not have solved all of his teams' problems, but I can assure you that the intent is there
you all know me...I am not an ass-kisser...but we are lucky to have him here
-
He does come off as a decent guy in interviews and whatnot. Shouldn't all of DC's collective negative energy be focused on getting Dan Snyder's ass ridden out of town on a rail after a good tar-and-feathering?

He genuinely cares about how everyone is treated
A friend of mine approached him on the concourse at a Caps game to tell him about an idea he had. Ted stopped, listened, talked to him about it and then offered to talk to him about it further up in his box. My friend said he really didn't think Ted would take him seriously, but was stunned by his sincerity and generosity.
The city could do a hell of a lot worse. And does when it comes to the Redskins.

I have met Ted before, and I agree, he's an extremely nice guy for his status and fame. I do believe Ted is a good guy, but his whining and complaining in his attempts to control the message strike me as extremely vain and petty. I also believe my take on the Caps is valid. Why should it be acceptable if they miss the playoffs?
And azagal is right.

What if Dan Snyder gets Peyton Manning? ;D

as a fan of of the pens, i always was surprised that caps fans werent more embarrassed by ted's blowhard blog. when he bought the wiz, who i am a fan of, i thought maybe it would be different.
nope, still embarrassing. first year in five that i didnt split season tickets

Go to pittsburgh

That's my only real issue with Ted. He gets rid of Boudreau even though he was the fastest coach ever to reach 100 wins and keeps Saunders 2 years longer than he should have been here? What could he have possibly been thinking?? I understand if you want a change for the caps, but to not have even fired Saunders well before he did and get rid of Boudreau at the first sign of trouble this year was simply unconscionable.
-
Go to pittsburgh
to root for the wiz?

the bullets/wizards have always (last 30 years) been bad/not good but they've at least tended to be bad/not good in an endearingly hilarious way with a disappointing cast of endearingly hilarious characters (and the occasional tantalizing flirtation with competency). the main payoff of being a fan has been the opportunity to be in on the joke. if the joke isn't funny anymore, and they are still bad/not good, there's really no reason not to jump ship.
an owner who gets defensive seems like they are admitting they don't know what they're doing. let your actions and the actions of the people you surround yourself with speak for themselves. if the product sucks, the backlash is real - its not a misunderstanding.

Um, you sorta did with a word change or two.;)
He's a nice guy. Have had friends work for him, nothing but good things said with stories to back them up. They also say he is very passionate and cares about the teams and the center.
Maybe he's a fine owner, having the money to support the team, but he just needs to bring in someone better to handle the athletics/team...? Also, (and some of you might relate) when someone is passionate about a team they can lose sight of constructive criticism and go defensive.
I'll agree though it's sort of annoying when folks high up or not, debate through their blog. Perhaps he really thinks he is explaining himself and stands behind what he writes without realizing he is coming across petty or misinformed. (writers & critics can do the same though)

I think we can all agree that Ted needs to hire a better beer buyer. As it is, it looks like someone just went down to the local Giant and said "let's just have all those".

I definitely don't agree that he hasn't put the right people in place, the Caps are one of the best rosters in the league, they're just all spoiled and lost respect for... I guess the whole sport or somethnig. I called the Caps to miss the playoffs halfway through last year if they didn't get their shit together. They did alright against the Rangers and completely shit the bed against the Lightning. This year they're dead in the water and NOTHING seems to be changnig. Sometimes they score 5 goals and other times they score nothing and barely break 20 shots on net. It doesn't make any fucking sense to me.
Wizards are a joke. A bad one at that.
I just want the Nats season to start at this point.

so because the Wizards and Capitals aren't doing well Ted sucks?
Didn't he just buy the Wizards like two years ago? Haven't the Capitals been in the playoffs most seasons since Ted bought them?
You have a weird definition of suck.. I'd hate to see what you say about Snyder.

its easy to understand any fear and loathing of dc sports fans who see another owner who made made his money in marketing, characterizes himself as 'a fan' first and foremost, and may understand marketing better than sports ownership. leonsis seems like a good guy (unlike snyder) and his book 'the business of happiness' was a decent read, but can he put substance behind the style? he's open to advice. great. but who gives a sh*t if he himself doesn't implement a vision for a winning franchise. the wizards were pathetic last year and even more pathetic this year. leonsis' success with caps coincided with having best player in the world . . .its not like leonsis did anything to make ovechkin so good . . .and now they are regressing.
what i don't understand is why a smart good guy can't recognize and attract the best people to run the teams. i understand why snyder can only attract sycophants and past-their-primers looking to exploit him for a final payday / jobs for kids. but leonsis should attract talent, right?

i believe both ernie and mcphee were already in place when ted bought the teams. a better question might be, "why is ted so reluctant to start over at the top"

Great call. I believe Ted is reluctant to shitcan Ernie because Ted grew up a Knicks fan and Ernie was GM of the Shits for way too long.

I knew that all sports in DC were a total joke when renaming the Bullets was announced as a move towards being more sensitive towards society and value, then they go rename the BULLETS to the WIZARDS!

I never followed this as being logical either. A football team is strong, powerful, brace (OK maybe that one is a stretch) so how is it disrespectful to name a team after anything? Does ANYONE know of a native american who is personally offended by this team name? Not some movement, group, or politician with an agenda, just a normal every day person? We would be a lot better off if the government and powers that be would quit spending so much time and resources worrying that someone somewhere MIGHT be offended by a word. If you really get down to it, you can pick ANY word in the language and I bet SOMEONE will end up being offended by it... Get over it and move on with things that really matter!
-
The last I checked, movements and groups *were* made up of normal everyday people.
If you wanted to honor Native Americans, why not name the team after a tribe name or some other actual Native American word rather than something derogatory?
Wouldn't Washington Niggers be more appropriate than Washington Redskins anyway? I mean, how many Native Americans are even on the team anyway?

i'm not sure "the government" has anything to do with the move to rename the redskins. it's always fun to blame things on "the government", if that happens to fit your worldview, but i don't think reality supports that claim. what branch of government is responsible for sport team names?

hasnt "the government" thrown out multiple lawsuits against the skins with regards to their mascot

probably the same branch that gives ticker tape parades to overpaid ball throwers . . . instead of our military.

I said "We would be a lot better off if the government AND POWERS THAT BE would quit spending so much time and resources worrying that someone somewhere MIGHT be offended by a word." Meaning the people who have the power to make these decisions and waste that power and their time on such silly matters. You don't think that every politician words things so not to offend the particular group he is trying to appease?

Oh boy! Ted went to his blog to tell everyone how outraged he is over the 5-0 loss to Carolina. Fuck you, Ted. You're responsible for this bullshit. You signed pieces of shit like Ovechkin, Semin and Backstrom (all totally incapable of being leaders), shitcanned Bruce and let George McPhee continue to operate with his head up his ass. Plus the Bullets are beyond pathetic and you whine and cry about the Post reminding everyone you can get Bullets tickets for less than $1.
I said it already and I'll say it again: Fuck you, Ted, and shut the fuck up already.
-
Haven't the Capitals been in the playoffs most seasons since Ted bought them?
Seven seasons in the playoffs, five out of them. For buying a team that had just gone to its first Stanley Cup finals that's not a great follow-up. Mind you, that finals team was McPhee's first year so it was essentially David Poile's team.
Ted used to come off well publicly, his blog really hurts him though. He has very, very thin skin and really can't take any criticism. He rarely takes into consideration anyone's opinion other than his own. I have had the occasion to interact with him numerous times over the years, mainly Caps related, and I can just say that his public persona is very different from who he actually is. But that's probably part and parcel with being able to parlay business interests into a pile of cash. He'd just be so much better off without the blog.
The season ticket increase the team just instituted is going to put a severe dent into their plan sales, but as long as the team can play to 90% of capacity he won't care. The team is losing a chunk of season ticket sales from long time, die hard fans, but the team's actions say they don't care and won't until the casual fan stops coming and they realize how much they damaged relations with the long suffering fans of the team. Oh well.
-
Ted and Danny Boy are almost polar opposites publically, but one thing they have in common is they both have a ridiculous deep-seated hatred of the Post.

?My friend Seth Hurwitz gave me a Caps poncho that he bought in Mexico ? it is so ugly it is beautiful,? Leonsis later wrote on his blog. ?He insisted I wear it to rally the team! I did ? and boom ? we get the two points! Thank you Seth! Rally Poncho!?
-
I like Ted. I think people are freaking out a little too much...
-
Dan Snyder has really ruined the ownership in DC. He's been out and about and even the casual fan knows who he is. Casual fans don't know who the shit Ted Leonsis is. I think people freak out because they think "Oh god, another owner butting his nose into team business" or something along those lines. I know McPhee is in the hot seat now, so I can see why people would talk more about him. I've never been bothered by Ted, I do think he comes off as whiney and very thin skinned, but hey, I love the Caps and defend them as well when someone talks badly about them.
-
Ted seems like a solid guy, and he's a big supporter of Georgetown basketball. I like him. All this bizarre anger on here is weird.
-
I think they need to get rid of guaranteed contracts in professional sports, so that teams can cut players without paying them when they are underperforming. Like in the real world.
-
Players didn't negotiate guaranteed contracts in a vacuum, idiot. Someone had to make that concession.
-
god i love hate. hey james . . . wait til you see the beer haul i scored!
-
Bruce Bodreau is responsible for the sell-outs the Caps have had the last few years. And the winning seasons. Before Bruce came the team couldn't give tickets away. He brought exciting hockey and winning to the team and the fans followed. Last season the GM told Bruce to play boring hockey. The team started to suffer. I really can't watch them anymore. I used to go to a lot of games but stopped going when prices got ridiculous for single games. And the food is the worst at Verizon center.
I expect next season that the Caps will start seeing half-empty arenas again. Ted lucked into getting Bruce as a coach. He appears to be little more than an imbecile. He has attacked fans. He has an awful temper. And currently runs two awful teams.
-
Went to the game tonight. Never heard the Caps booed so loud before. Obviously I've only been here four years now. It was bad. BAD.
-
I e-mailed Ted last night saying I wanted a refund for the game. His response: Me too!!!
'08-'09 is when the Caps should have won it all. Tomorrow's game should be interesting. These bums aren't worthy of the money they make anymore... What happened?
-
It's pretty simple. Ted and George McPhee invested in the wrong people (Ovie, Semin, Backstrom, Green). None of the four are leaders, Semin doesn't even want to be here, Ovie cares more about being a celebrity and Green is injured way too often. The defense is bad and the goaltending is extremely inconsistent to put it nicely.
-

Exactly, he passes off his Georgetown support as some type of DC badge of honor -- which to me, casts you in the exact opposite light. He's a New Yorker that fell into some good draft picks and thought he was a good owner.

Ovi, Brooks and Brouwer are the only ones out there pushing the team. Brooks is too quiet, Ovi isn't a leader and Brouwer's in his first year with the team. I like that he's speaking out. And can you really call Mike Green injury prone because he got hit in the head twice by a fucking puck? I'll give you his groin injury this year, but he's been out because of the 2 pucks to the head for the most part.

When you are trying to pass off this fact as evidence that you're somehow from here, absolutely. There's no sports team in the area that would speak to this less.
And Ted will almost always reply to e-mails -- if they are decently civil.

Real problem is the team has no centers. They haven't had a second line center since Flash was traded and he really wasnt a center. YOu can work as had as you want an the current team is not going to be a winner as currenlty constucted

It's a damn shame. I always thought they didn't have enough grit. Just watching them against the Flyers they just seem to pressed people into the boards and the Flyers are coming at full speed and smashing people into the boards and in open ice. Chimera got creamed on the open ice!
-

Are you saying they weren't as tough as the Flyers in the game?
Brouwer backed up his completely legal but brutal hit on Gustafsson and fought Hartnell to a draw.
Chimera also had a nice hit on Wellwood.
Caps also out hit them 37 to 29.
Not saying the Caps don't have problems, but they weren't 'out toughed' in the game.

I feel like they didn't make their hits count. I thought even though the Caps had more hits that they just looked like they were pushing a bully off of them, or laying their body onto someone into the baords. The Flyers looked like they were out to make a different with their hits, they wanted to bruise the Caps and they do night in and night out. I think the only people who lay decent hits are Ovi and Chimera. I was fine with Brouwer's physicality, but it's not like that every night. Our most physical outputs this season have been against the Penguins. I don't think the team throws their weight around enough. They don't have the grit!

Honestly, at that point, who would they have given it to? Since then I'd say Brooks. But when they traded away their captain, it could have only been Ovi. Although I agree, I think he should have earned it. I would have rather gone months without a captain until someone actually emerged as the captain.

Yep, happens all the time. Unfortunately I can't ring any off the top of my head, but it does happen and more than you expect. Happens more with established coaches more than newbies like Hunter.

Yes, deal out the three As until someone earns it.

He (Hunter) won't be back next year.
Unless we squeak in and make a miraculous run into the 2nd round. Which frankly would be the worst case scenario. Then we'd be guaranteed more of the same old shit.
