Another boardee brought this to my attention earlier today. Isn't it coming up soon? Is anything planned/being planned?
-
I heard a rumor that Einsturzende Neubauten will be invited to set the stage on fire...
-
I'd go to that.
-
make it happen
-
according to thatguy's facebook fan page (yes, he has one!), "make sure to check out the washington post magazine this weekend for a feature on the club's 30th anniversary."

wow... he posted that on his FB, but not a peep here? that kinda hurt...

Catered by Ben's Chili Bowl? No flames allowed.
-
free t-shirts for the first 300? ;P
-
free hoop earings for the first 30 ;D
-
pot cupcakes for the first 3?
(please note newbies: this post is purely in jest)
-
free mural tattoo of thatguy on your face ;D
-
Yes please!
pot cupcakes for the first 3?
-
He might have a Facebook fanpage but I bet he doesn't have a duo of bloggers that stalks him. ;)

i had the date wrong. it's not this weekend, it's next. the 18th. there will also be an online component to the story.
y'all find stuff on your own pretty well. i would have mentioned it eventually.
-
like on the 19th?
-
i'm under a lot of pressure to keep my fans happy, people. there's only so much of me to go around. i'm sorry if i'm not living up to your expectations anymore. i'll be in the corner crying.
-
Will there be a live component of some sort, too? A TBA show other than the one already taking place on that night or maybe on the night after (dark as of now)?
-
don't know of any confirmed shows, but that doesn't mean there won't be anything. i don't even know the exact date of the anniversary. the article comes out next weekend, but that's not timed with anything else in particular that i know of.
-

More like the front row corner of the ice at Verizon Center watching Ovie dominate.

i am quite lucky to have the opportunity to see a game from time to time. sometimes i score good seats.
tonight's game was a blast. can't wait for the playoffs to start.

Online component. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/special/artsandliving/930-club-turns-30/)
So when will that Fugazi reunion 30th anniversary show be announced?

So when will that Fugazi reunion 30th anniversary show be announced?
Oh God please no! Haven't Fugazi, Mackaye and the rest of their ilk done enough to suck every ounce of fun and relevance from the DC music scene?
Really that whole straight edge/dischord scene is the worse thing to happen to this town (musicwise).

Would a one off show really bother you that much?

Don't worry, I have it on good authority the one-off will be at The National.
-
A few things about the article:
1) great to see Thatguy and learn about how he appeared on the scene
2) Why does Ian MacKaye appear in every one of these type of things? Dischord shows were only a small, small part of the 930 Club's history.
3) I can't believe the entire WUST Hall was purchased for $700,000... that'll barely get you even a rowhouse in DC these days.

Hutch, I think you would appreciate this interview with Bruce Hellington (formerly Merkle) of 9353...

-
Would a one off show really bother you that much?
You know I was tempted to say no but the truth is if it was at the 930 as part of the 30th anniversary festivities YES.
Mackaye and his peeps can have a monopoly on the special events and tributes and reunions at the Black Cat - which they all but do- but the 930 too? Come on!.
DC has to be about more than these guys and if its not lets leave the night open and see what happens...We won't have any less fun than at a Fugazi show..thats for sure.
The 30th anniversary should be a big celebration and I'm sorry to say Fugazi does not fit the bill.
-
OK so here is what we know so far.
According to this, (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/16/AR2010041602110.html) the anniversary is, in fact on 5/31. And according to JA, The Fleshtones are playing as part of the anniversary show (most likely with other bands). Shit's starting to come together!
-
Cool, the Fleshtones are about as opposite of Fugazi as you can get. (Unless the Meatmen are reincarnated)
-
The Slickee Boys torn up the joint at the 25th anniversary show...

Ian MacKaye produced some of Tesco Vee's recordings.

that would be a good show for the 30th anniversary of the Lansburgh Center...
-
Patti Smith would be a good concert for a 30th anniversary show...if not, would you bring her anyways Seth? ;D
-
Tommy Keene?
-
who wrote the editorial comments in the post article? Freedom du CRAP?!
the diss of the Bayou is totally unecessary.. I'd hardly call U2, Phish -among many others- "the spawn of REO Speedwagon.."!
I remember the column at the old 930 -among other things-very well..
-
U2 are also pretty unnecessary but you don't ever see me bitching about them.

I enjoyed the article. :)
I wish I could have seen a show at the original 9:30 Club.
-
yeah the Bayou dis in the article was pretty harsh. I saw some excellent shows at the Bayou (along with some lousy ones). Among the best:
David Johansen Group, The Razz 11/29/79
Gang of Four, Pylon 11/16/80
Gang of Four, R.E.M. 6/21/81
Big Country 12/12/83
Red Rockers, Scream 12/16/84
Waterboys, Model Prisoners 10/27/85
Midge Ure 12/17/85
Big Audio Dynamite 12/9/86
Big Audio Dynamite, Junkyard Band 4/12/87
Replacements 7/29/87
Ron Wood & Bo Diddley 11/24/87
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fishbone 5/1/88
Tom Tom Club 5/17/89
Big Audio Dynamite 10/3/89
Skatalites 2/25/90
Faith No More 7/16/90
Charlatans UK 3/1/91
MC 900 Ft Jesus 2/1/92
Lindsey Buckingham 3/30/93
The Kinks 4/30/93
Big Audio Dynamite 11/12/95
Tom Tom Club 10/16/98 (that was the last time I went there ... and met and chatted with Tina, too .. which was one of the cool things about that place, the band had to walk thru the crowd up in the balcony to get back to their dressing room).
-
I actually think the Bayou to some extent filled the same role that the 930 Club does today.
-
While I am psyched for the Anniversary whatever it may be, it sucks that it's on a Monday. :(
-
Don Dixon informed the crowd at Rams Head last night that he and Marti Jones have been invited by Seth to play the anniversary show.
-
does richard cheese really represent the "essence" that is the club?
we'll get to that
Wait...what? THIS is the 30th Anniversary show we've been waiting for? REALLY??? Please please please have something else on Monday. This would just be a let down.
-

Its a smokescreen man!

Bayou was 18+ so it was a nightmare growing up if someone you wanted to see played there . . .930 all ages policy was amazing

Doors at 6:30. Methinks there'll be something else later that same evening....
-
And yet something else the following night.
Richard Cheese is a great start!
-
A friend of mine had a guess that just might be crazy enough to be possible:
Kraftwerk
-

I think it's cool that Seth is booking some of his favorite acts to the Anniversary show. It's a known FACT that Dixon's song "Praying Mantis" is one of GREATEST pop songs ever written.

True dat.

-
dc's youth brigade performing only songs by la's youth brigade.
-
henry rollins and ian mackaye gettin into a fist fight on stage, regarding who is more influential . . . all while singing the songs of bad brains.

-
It would have to be something significant if they are waiting this long to announce it and expecting it to sell out.
-
5/30:
6:30 Dick Cheese
10:00 Aphex Twin/Kraftwerk/Fatboy Slim
5/31:
R.E.M. Performing all of Murmur/Tiny Desk Unit/Urban Verbs/Fleshtones
-
haven't i already warned you to no don't stop?
-
Out of the countless staffers I asked, only one admitted to knowing anything and wouldn't divulge what they knew. Nice work keeping this quiet, Seth.
-

You'll waterboard it out of them yet!
-
Ehh, not sure I'll be there again until Dick.
-
has anybody said Einstürzende Neubauten yet?
-
What about the club's history as The Atlantis?
-
I'd love to see Joe "King" Carrasco again, but I don't think he plays much these days. His shows were always a blast.
How about a Bloody Mannequin Orchestra reunion? :)
-
3 Bands for 3 Bucks!
Radiohead!
Fugazi!
The Burnt Ernies!
-
^And with the service charge, it'll cost $7.50!
-

And you'll all bitch endlessly about the service charge being 150% of the ticket cost!!

I looked up Joe "King"'s schedule, hoping he would be on the anniversary bill. It looks like he is playing a lot in Mexico.
-
alot . . . or some lot?
-
Interesting... guess they're going to announce it really close to the date...
They should make it free and have free beer...
After 30 years of selling us tickets and overpriced beer its the least they could do! :)
I mean when you throw a birthday party you don't charge people for the cake!
I'm real curious what they'll do..
The best band to get for something like this would be J Geils Band...talk about a party! But I know thats not in the cards..
-
they will hold the event at DAR, just for all you lovers of the place ;D
-

YES!!!!!!!!!!! This is the best idea, yet.
But seriously. It's less than 2 weeks away and there's no real chatter??? I WANT TO KNOW!!!!!!!!
-
^ stop worrying...it will be a good show...lots of good music from the 80s 90s and today!
-
it's going to be jimmys chicken shack ;D
-
Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Son Volt, Tweedy solo, Farrar solo- until they get on each others nerves...then, it's Josh to the rescue
-
good music from the 80s 90s and today!
If a radio station advertised itself as such, I'd shudder in horror and flip to the next one.

it can be meant in a good way as well...you will see...?!

I'm glad I wasn't the only person who thought "mix 107.3/wash fm" upon reading that comment.
-
Let's speculate more!
-
ugh nevermind
-
ugh nevermind
huh, what? has something been announced?
-
Phish, the Eagles, and Muse?
-
What happened?
ugh nevermind
-
Now they are just fucking with us.
E-Blast says:
M 5/31 9:30 Club 30th Anniversary Concert - Details coming soon!
-
Hmm, they sure are being tight-lipped about all this. I'm thinking that the Fleshtones are a go:
http://www.last.fm/event/1506849+The+Fleshtones+at+9:30+Club+on+31+May+2010
But I can't get a handle on who else is coming, I've heard people floating everything from Aphex Twin to REM. If any of that is true, I will be ready to kill for tickets when the word goes out ::)
-
Aphex Twin and REM were just jokes I posted here.
Nothing more.
-
will it be bands that represent small clubs at its best. or the dc scene. or the best shows to have ever been performed at the club. or seth's favourites. or let the staph pick. or every band that has played a secret show?
-
Now they are just fucking with us.

Seth?

Oh wow. So it may actually go on sale tomorrow. Didn't even think of that.
-
^ i maybe overthinking/lawyering the language used...but it won't hurt to logon to the ticketfly at 10...
-
Maybe they will do what festivals do and put tickets on sale without announcing the lineup as an experiment to see how fast it'd sell.
-
http://twitter.com/EITMonline/status/14293610971
On 5/31, for the 30th Anniv. of @930ClubDC, FREE sets by Dave Grohl (maybe), The Psychedelic Furs, BT, Citizen Cope, The Fleshtones & more!
-
I was thinking Thursday, too, but it's not listed on ticketfly yet. Most other new shows are, I think. Plus - tickets don't strictly go on sale on Thursdays any more. I'll be checking though - just in case.
-
I was afraid of something Foo Fighters related.
-
JIMMIE'S CHICKEN SHACK
-
Who is EITMonline?
-
That DC101 clown.
-
Nothing against Dave Grohl, but would might have been a more casual "let's get a ticket because this could be a fun event" it has the potential to turn into a nightmare ticketfly crashing fustration inducing situation.
-
Elliot In The Morning. Better question...who's following him?
Who is EITMonline?
-
Did everyone get their tickets?? Can't believe it's free!
-
Did tickets go "on sale" at 10 on ticketfly? Missed it.
-
Nothing there or anywhere.
-
those service charges were way out of control....
-
So maybe it will be an all day thing, since it's a holiday?
-
Nightmare scenario: There's a big name attached and it's one of those "You have to win tickets to get in" shows. Ugh.
-
come on...don't I always cover you guys on stuff like this?
-
Seth, I don't care what hutch or walkonby or Julian or LiveNation or vansmack (you should see the PMs he sends me about you!), you're the best.
come on...don't I always cover you guys on stuff like this?

;D
-
yeah, like nkotb said. So sethy, is this shindig free??? ;D
-
i wanna see seth naked.
fifty dollar bills . . . fifty dollars bills.
-
We trust you, Seth. But you know how we get when you leave us to our imaginations... ;D
(...he says while still holding out hope for anything R.E.M.-related.)
-
Its going to be Yoko Ono screaming into a microphone all day. There will be a line out front, as people get disgusted and leave (even with the free/reduced price beer) someone gets to enter and take their place. This will go on all day.
-
I think 930 should limit entrance to people over 30... filter out the hipster kids who don't have a long history with the club

I dont' save my ticket stubs and I am not sure who I saw first at the club. I saw 3 bands in 1984: Hoodoo Gurus, The Church, and the Replacements. Or the Replacements could have been 1985 and I saw another band in 1984. It was the "Let it be" tour. Terrible show is all I remember. I think I saw Let's Active at the club in 1984 as well.

I don't have stubs but I have a photo of me in there with "Dirty Looks"... that had to be pretty early
-

The Church in 1984 was my first show at the old club. I lost my ticket stub though. I think the oldest 9:30 ticket stub I have is for Black Flag in 1985.
-
:( What's a gal to do...I didn't move to DC until 1990. And I have NO idea what my first show was...I saw dozens and dozens, but have a terrible memory. And would never find those ticket stubs (though I can't believe I threw them out).
-
Tickets at the door the night of the show were generic.
-
Can't recall my first show either.....just remember I missed Husker Du by a week or so
-

Hey, I have no problem with Hurwitz. He's a rich, elitest guy with a Jewish last name selling straw to indie kids for gold. If he'd dress better and hit the tredmill, he could be the VP of Julian's America for cripe's sake.
-
Slickee Boys, 1983-ish. Definitely don't have the stub.

Ed has all my stubs, think first was The Go Betweens with Alex Chilton opening up. '84-ish?
-
My first show at the club's current location was Dead Kenedys in 1985. It was called WUST Music hall that point, i Believe. People were jumping off the second floor balcony into the crowd. And Jello was telling to take the skinheads in attendance outside and kick their asses. Night Joe Theisman had his career ending injury.
-
Wow, those skinheads must have fucked up Joe real good.

ROFL. If I had any photoshop skills, this gave me a hilarious idea for a photo.

i like this thread. it makes me feel young
-
My thoughts exactly.
Buncha senior citizens up in this bitch.
-
can void (we can find replacement members im sure) and no trend play this, i assure you people will show up
-
hell you can even throw root boy slim cover band on there so a bunch of 40-50 something year old bros come to add to the mix
-
Can't remember for the life of me who played my first time at the club but I think it was in 1980. Or pretty damn close to that, at least.
-
Last minute request for Suicide.
They played the old club, didn't they?
And they would still make most people (especially the Pitchfork flavor-of-the-month band-fluffing hipsters) shit their pants in terror:
Frankie Teardrop recorded earlier this month (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1QjVVXwMwk)
-
Sooooooooooo, one week left.
-
perhaps seth wanted to see how lost ended before making the announcement. he knew that nobody would care about anything until that show was over. now he's going to have to wait til wed atleast until most people shut up about it. so expect an announcement on wednesday.
-
There are a few of us who never gave a rat's ass about the show since its beginning.

That never could have happened because Disney/ABC are just not that cool.

I enjoy reading the musings of overweight 40something dufuses whose greatest accomplishments in life are having attended shows at a rat infested hole in the wall in the early 80's.

Hardly the greatest accomplishment in life. And I never saw any rats at the old 930 club. I liked the old club a lot better than the new one. Friendlier people too. Nicer neighborhood. Closer to the stage.
Don't worry in 30 years you can brag about seeing Coheed and Cambria at the club.
-
perhaps seth wanted to see how lost ended before making the announcement. he knew that nobody would care about anything until that show was over. now he's going to have to wait til wed atleast until most people shut up about it. so expect an announcement on wednesday.

"Hell yeah my bands still together, and I got lots of availability now. Just tell me when and where."
-
I believed your every word until you said the old club was in a nicer neighborhood.
I enjoy reading the musings of overweight 40something dufuses whose greatest accomplishments in life are having attended shows at a rat infested hole in the wall in the early 80's.
That's exactly how I feel about the 30th anniversary show.

my first show was sleater-kinney in 2002 and i still have the stub

No rats? Wow, when they put Atlantis down stairs you could see them run across on the pipes. If you ever parked out back, they would scurry from under your car when you turned the key. They were everywhere at the old club.

Man. I feel so un-cool reading this thread. I moved to the D.C. area (College Park) in 2004 for grad school, and my first show there was a reunited and downtuned Helmet.

I saw 9353 at DC Space. Great band.

Throw in Tru Fax and the Insaniacs, plus the Insect Surfers, and we have a deal.
-
I still remember my first show at the 9:30 Club...those crazy Arctic Monkeys...
-
My first show at the club was The Roots in '04...it was alright....
-
i can't remember my first 930 show.....saw tons of industrial bands in the early 90's. i did see cop shoot cop at the club on my 21st birthday. fist show was probably in 91
-
Mine was 94, and it was Edsel and someone else. Anyone know who that someone else was? I'm curious.
Followed shortly by Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, which was a big mistake.
Only other show at the old club i caught was Letters to Cleo in '96 maybe?
-
My first and only show at the old space was Velocity Girl and Chisel. I think it was a week or so before the place closed down.
-
why? were they bad live? i like them on record.
Followed shortly by Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, which was a big mistake.
-
my first show was tricky in 1999, shortly after moving here

I remember them being kinda jam band-ish, though their recorded stuff doesn't really sound like that. Maybe I was just in a bad mood.
-
if you can remember it, you were not there.
-
TicketFly.
-
got em - but for what?
-
At that price does it really matter? Don't you trust Seth to provide an excellent evening of entertainment?
-
I trust Seth. Yay.
-
PS, thanks Bombay, you're the bomb.
-
the chutney RULES. thanks buddy.
so, how long before people start bitching that the "free" tickets cost $11 in service fees?
-
show has dissapeared..
i pulled two ...thanks bombay
odd they seem to have allowed people to get 10 tickets or even more? i would have thought there would have been a limit.
-
Well, it disappeared while I was trying to buy tickets.
-
odd they seem to have allowed people to get 10 tickets or even more? i would have thought there would have been a limit.
yeah, seriously. this is just asking for abuse.
hey 930 club/TF, you really need to fix this. chances are high that scalpers are loading up. 2 or 4 limit seems reasonable.

I think Eliott in the Morning tweeted the same thing a week or so ago..
-
i do believe elliot was the first to "leak" it. i just saw it on an intranet forum. the person said they know seth . . . and that "it's official."
-
tickets now gone even from the show's ticketing page: "Tickets for this event are no longer available from Ticketfly."
sold out? or temporarily taken down?
-

I think maybe they are going to "build" it again with a ticket limit. ..
-
yeah, that was my thought behind "temporarily taken down". let's hope.
-
Okay, I'll bite. Who is BT?
-
Okay, I'll bite. Who is BT?
local techno or electronica dude
-
good question. at first the electronic musician came to mind (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BT_%28musician%29), and then i came across Billy Talent, a canadian band (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Talent). has either one ever played the club?
edit: looks like it's option #1. he's from rockville.
-
Dave Grohl is the sore thumb out of that lineup...
-
What's the source of this info?
-
What's the source of this info?
Advertisement from the 930 club in baltimore city paper
-
"Both:BT"? both what? are there two shows?
based on previous info, ??? = dave grohl
That should be "booth" not "both". sorry.
-
ah, so BT is DJ'ing. cool.
-
so are tickets for this sold out now? I don't see anything on ticektfly. great, just great
-
Of course they are not going to cancel tickets.
Who knows what happened.. for all we know Bombay is an "IMP mole" who posted "Ticketfly" on this thread to get us the tickets..
Everybody stay cool.
-
<nevermind - don't wanna give anyone ideas. yeah, stay cool>
-
Wow, I have the fifth highest post count! That is amazing, as I've tapered off incredibly over the past couple of years. I was really chatty there for a while. Meanwhile Markie has the most, and he's been gone for several years (4, 5??).
-
You apparently missed his reappearance a month or two ago. Like a Brian Walace cameo.

I bet if you added up Rhett Miller, Henry Dark, Charlie Lackoftestes, James Ford and the half-dozen other alter egos, his post count would put everyone to shame.
-
hes like the man in black ;D
-
Is it just me or is there some hardcore moderating going on in this thread?
-

Don't they all stay 'with' him, regardless of whether he changes his 'handle'? I'd agree, if not.
-
Is it just me or is there some hardcore moderating going on in this thread?
It's not just you!
-
any word if tickets are going to go back on 'sale'?
-
My guess is no. I think there will be a chance for forum, Volume and email subscribers in a lottery, then the rest would be available day of first come first serve, per the news release.
-
It looks like ticketfly has been refunding all of the purchased tickets....i got the email about the lottery though and entered (crosses fingers)
-
I've signed up for the eblast a million times but never got it. Maybe I'll get a chance to enter the lottery through my forum profile email. Otherwise, I gotta plead my case: I work Sunday-Thursday evenings so I miss a lot of shows. But my library's in "intersession" (between semesters/sessions) right now so I've got this Monday off. Hey, Seth?
-
That email was strange -- the title said REFUND, but that was not in the body of the email.

yup, i got the refund notification and the special forum invite. did everybody get that, or just those who had tickets canceled?
Of course they are not going to cancel tickets.
sorry, you were saying?

I got an invite, did not order tix.

Argentina has no chance to win the World Cup! NONE!

Guess you didn't catch this part: "The following is a message from the 9:30 Club"
Wasn't a Ticketfly problem.

Amateur hour at the 930 Club!
-
No email or PM or anything yet.
-
Like the email blasts, I predict folks will get the invitation email at varying times over the next few hours -- there are thousands of forum members, email subscribers, Volume subscribers. My friends and I all get the Wednesday email blast at different times during the day/evening.
-
hmmm no email here :o
-
didnt get it yet. :(
-
Got both the refund and the invite emails.
Boo/yay, respectively.
-
Check the email address associated with 930 account
-
The last email blast I received was May 25th, 2009 for the Killers presale. The from address was 930_Club@mail.vresp.com. Has that changed?
-
hes like the man in black ;D
Or, Sybil. ;)
I'm happy about Dave Grohl, if he appears. I was going to ask Seth to put him on the list of performers, but his name was in that tweet leak, so I didn't have too.
Not happy for the gaffe, but selfishly, I'm glad TF was an error -- I missed it entirely.
I did get an email (thanks!) ...tripled checked my RSVP instructions, *crossing fingers*.
yes, Chip, that is the correct email.
-
Check the email address associated with 930 account
Yes!!! Thank you!! That lineup looks amazing. Fingers crossed for tomorrow morning. 8)
-
have all the emails been sent out?
-
have all the emails been sent out?
i think so.
-
God bless Seth and the 930 but the cancelled ticket thing is horribly lame!
-
I haven't received an email or the RSVP ticketfly said I'd get after my purchase was cancelled.
-
I just checked my email and it was about the HFStival haha, but there was a mention about the 30th party, but that email will be sent out tomorrow. I think my email server is behind ;D
-
If someone gets ticket(s) via the lottery - is it a time sensitive claim to accept the tickets?
Or, are you on the list for the show no matter what and that's that?
I only ask b/c I have meetings all day tomorrow and probably won't be able to check email right away.
-
Tee, I'm pretty sure the latter is true. If you get picked, your tickets are held at will-call and that's that.
-
I just checked my email and it was about the HFStival haha, but there was a mention about the 30th party, but that email will be sent out tomorrow. I think my email server is behind ;D
No, that is correct. That is the regular lotto email for everyone else going out tomorrow
-
cr*p again, I see your reply now, thanks azag.
-
hmmmm, I guess I never registered to get forum emails. Great, just great
-
crap, sorry, I was trying to modify my other post. So, I'll ask: did I miss the start time of the event entirely?
-
oh yeah is this lotto for one ticket or a pair? ;D
-
deadline for entry is Thursday, May 27 at 10am
-
God bless Seth and the 930 but the cancelled ticket thing is horribly lame!
I hear that brother... I hear that...
Have never experienced something like that..
I better win the lottery or I am going to be PISSED.
-
That's exactly how I feel about the 30th anniversary show.
There are a few of us who never gave a rat's ass about the show since its beginning.
and that's why you will specifically be excluded from the invite list

Well thats swell. I haven't received an email.

Me either, and I checked and have emails enabled - I'll keep my fingers crossed!
-
I took the day off to pray that I win the lottery and get a pair of tix.
I do, however, wish I hadn't replied via my Blackberry. I'm concerned I f'd up the formatting of my reply. Can't go back and fix that.
-
A pair. You and a guest.

Same. *sigh* I mostly lurk here, though. Was the email blast limited? Ah well. I live nearby and can always try lurking around the club instead of lurking around the internets.
-
I received the e-mail to the account I use to buy tickets from TF rather than the one I receive the blast.
-
A pair. You and a guest.

ok, good to know. so when will they announce the lotto winners? ;D
-
they said forum winners would know by noon today
-
Well I said that before I saw the stellar lineup that was assembled, and only in reaction to some of the tiring overhype that was going on in the forum. No offense intended and apologies if necessary to the 9:30 Club and it's staff.
I think the same thing happens with FreeFest. Some naysayers in this forum will crap all over it in advance, but then if one or two of thier favorite bands are booked, they're all over the free tickets like flies on cow manure.
That's exactly how I feel about the 30th anniversary show.

Well in the case of the 930 30th Anniversary show its not so much about the acts but about the community..
Even if I don't manage to be there I got to hand it to Seth for making it a free event and largely by invitation..It really is like a birthday party....
-
i think the cost of admission should be more than free . . . just to see hutch and julian in the same room together.
-
Same. *sigh* I mostly lurk here, though. Was the email blast limited? Ah well. I live nearby and can always try lurking around the club instead of lurking around the internets.
nope, this first invitation went out to forum members only. maybe you needed a certain post count to be included?
email blast subscribers should be getting an invitation later this afternoon/tonight.
-

that would make sense. i think i've posted twice in the 3 years or so since i registered. damn. who knew one of my regrets would be not spending enough time online? i'll try through the email blast.
-
So will there be a special Forum lounge or something so we can all meet or avoid each other if we want? :)
-
i was kidding about the post count thing - pure speculation. i doubt they'd enforce that, but who knows.
Well in the case of the 930 30th Anniversary show its not so much about the acts but about the community..
this.
i heart the 930 club, it's having a birthday party, so few places i'd rather be on monday night, regardless of the lineup. the fact that it a very decent and eclectic lineup should make a great night on the town. fingers crossed.
-
never got an email . . . :'(
-
I just want to see the Slickee Boys and Trouble Funk. Somehow I never managed to see them in the past it would be fun to see them now.
-
you people and your hotmail accounts... it would appear that hotmail is not playing nicely
-
hotmail will sometimes block email that comes from gmail......so stupid
-
they said forum winners would know by noon today
hmmm.... so people with hotmail (such as myself) will have problems knowing if they won or not, since people with hotmail are having problems getting the emails? great, just great ;D
-
lottery decision in 30 minutes? :P
-
20 minutes. :o good luck folks.
-
I still haven't seen the time of event - where should I look? Thanks for the opportunity, Seth. It is nice to have a community of supporters (and of the line-up) to celebrate the club's b-day with... Good luck, all. I'm hoping my Oracle requests will grant me access...;)
-
I suggest checking your junk mailboxes and making sure you're checking the e-mail address associated with your forum membership.
-
Tension is palpable...
-
refreshing my inbox like crazy..nothing so far :-\
-
nothing here either..
-
nada ???
-
Bummer. I never got an email either (yahoo account). Was this just limited to board members in the DC area, as its pretty obvious I am in NYC now?
-
ok, I haven't got anything yet. Who got one and wants to take me? ;D
-
Anyone complaining will automatically be disqualified ;)
Patience folks.
-
How about if you complain now, then you get tickets, you can't complain about anything after that. ;)
-
every time i get a new e-mail, i'm all like:

-
i want an oompa loompa now! ;)
but really, thanks to seth & all others involved. this is bound to be a fun celebration!
-
so is it offical now that all the invites are out? ;D
-
please explain.....
i want an oompa loompa now! ;)
but really, thanks to seth & all others involved. this is bound to be a fun celebration!
-
explain? sure: it'll be a fun celebration because of the music, people and place that come together on monday night.
any other questions?
-
What's the lineup for this thing again? The Dave Grohl, BT, Fleshtones lineup that was mentioned earlier.
-
Got Nuffin'
-
;D
-
a buddy of mine won tickets........no email for me :(
-
It ain't over....we still have a shot tomorrow. Keep the faith.
-
:D ;D :)
-
I got a golden ticket!
I feel like a queen for a day.
(Except for the mustache)
-
Ok , as soon as I posted that message above, an email arrived. So patience, folks....it ain't even over for today.
;D (and thanks Seth!!!)
-
:-* Thanks, 930 bunny!
I'll bring the dip!
*fingers crossed for the rest the loons*
-
Woohoo! We're in! Thanks to all at the Club. Should be a blast.
-
(http://zanypickle.com/wp-content/gallery//2010/05/zanypickle_TGIF_grabbag56.gif)
this might call for baked brie.
-
so has anyone who applied not gotten in? i'm wondering what the success rate is...
-
Winner.
-
Yay. Thanks to all involved. This may be the first time I've actually won something.
-
so has anyone who applied not gotten in? i'm wondering what the success rate is...
yes, i applied and didn't get in
-
What a great way to celebrate my 6/1 b-day. And it's a biggie.
-
I am in!
Thanks, Seth and Staph!
-
YES! I won a golden ticket! Huge thanks to Seth, the 930 club staff/mods, and powers that be for setting up this awesome shindig. See everybody on Monday! 8) :) ;D
-
I feel like I'm the only person that didn't win :(
-
once set times are published, let's see about setting up a meet-up in the back bar. haven't had one for a while, would be nice to put faces to the nicks - and see a few old(er) faces again.
yes, i applied and didn't get in
crap. maybe you could be someone's +1? c'mon, forumites, let's take care of our own.
(i'd invite you but the missus would be very very unimpressed if i left her at home)
-
I got a pair. Thanks Seth!
-
won a pair in the lottery...this should be awesome...any info on set times?
-
it's possible i'll have an extra.
I feel like I'm the only person that didn't win :(
-
I'll just hold out hope for tomorrow :)
-
Another winner
-
I feel like I'm the only person that didn't win :(
You're not the only one :-\
-
Negative here so far. Wondering if its a rolling announcement of winners?
-
So will there be a special Forum lounge or something so we can all meet or avoid each other if we want? :)
In the past they did xmas parties for the forum in the back bar. Do they still do that? Seth even had drink tickets for everyone.
-
none here either..... insert great, just great
-
Got mine...thanks staph! Happy birthday to me!
-

yup, and i'd be up for another one. i suggest we wait until set times are announced, so we can pick the most opportune time to be in the basement. given the number of acts, i think there won't be much time between sets so we may have to miss a little bit of someone's performance.
i'm thinking during clutch's set. <hides>
-
Def think Backbar is place to meet, but drink tickets may be a reach considering the WHOLE SHOW is a gift to us all. ;)

Thanks 9:30 Club!
-
me too! yay! i may be able to help someone who didn't/doesn't "win" the lottery. thanks again, 930!
-
hotmail will sometimes block email that comes from gmail......so stupid
Just changed to my gmail account from my hotmail account. Didn't know they had something weird about them. I should be set for the 40th anniversary now.. :)
-
In!
Thanks to everyone involved.
-
Thanks Seth & staph!
-
Thank you Nightclub 9:30 :D
-
Thanks!
-
so while not everyone was picked, the success rate seems pretty damn high.
thank you, 930!
-
Thanks for not excluding my ass from the party. ;)
Anyone have a guess...Band order/set times tba sometime during the day Monday?
-
hmm....maybe I didn't get invite because I call him sethy ;D
-
In - thanks!
-
Jen and Todd here from BOUND, etc. So if you haven't received an email via the listserve or forum, are you SOL at this point? I've been refreshing for 24 hours straight and would love to know...
Anyone have an idea of when doors open, so we'd know what time to arrive to camp for door tickets if necessary? Thanks. :)
-
I won 2. I can't believe my first 9:30 Club show was Slipknot in 2000 back to back nights. First show $40 and the second show for free if you won through WHFS. R.I.P. Paul Gray. Next show @ 9:30 Club was 2 weeks later Foo Fighters. I know I will get a surprise which really isn't a surprise. I think everyone won via here.
-
So if I havent already received an email from the club, is it safe to say i didnt win a ticket?
=( !!!!!!!!!!

no, you aren't SOL yet. only the forum-members-only lottery has taken place. i see that you joined yesterday - might have been too late to get in. the e-mail blast lottery invitations haven't gone out yet. that will happen this afternoon/tonight.
doors open at 5 pm on monday, so you'll want to be there before then.
So if I havent already received an email from the club, is it safe to say i didnt win a ticket?
=( !!!!!!!!!!
no, see above. and you just joined today - invitations went out yesterday, so you missed on this round. hopefully you're on the weekly e-mail blast list. you can still win that way.
-
What is BOUND, etc? And why is it relevant to your post?
Jen and Todd here from BOUND, etc. So if you haven't received an email via the listserve or forum, are you SOL at this point? I've been refreshing for 24 hours straight and would love to know...
Anyone have an idea of when doors open, so we'd know what time to arrive to camp for door tickets if necessary? Thanks. :)

Thanks, Sweetcell! Really appreciate the info - will cross our fingers and keep refreshing. There's always old-school camping for tickets at the door if all else fails. :)

or some i'm told.
maybe they added that info in case someone recognizes them, and gives them their +1?
james ford: your missus will be at home with the baby so you'll be going solo. why not invite one of these fine fetish party organizers?
-
So will there be a special Forum lounge or something so we can all meet or avoid each other if we want? :)
In the past they did xmas parties for the forum in the back bar. Do they still do that? Seth even had drink tickets for everyone.
We didn't do one this year, but yes, have in the past.
I can bring brownies but maybe we should have lots and lots of cupcakes instead. :P
I can't commit until Monday if I will be able to give Haggis or another forumite my +1 but I will definitely post if it is available.
-
What is BOUND, etc? And why is it relevant to your post?
An event we've done in DC for about 15 years. Only relevant in the sense that that's how many older people on the forum would know me, given that this was my first forum post using this ID.
-
just got the normal invite for non-forumies a few minutes ago - so guess they are finished sending out invites to forum members.
-
I've already promised it to one of my regular concert buddies, who is not a forum member.
If he had said no ,i would have given it to a boardie. Sorry y'all.

just curious did everyone that receive an invite not use hotmail? ;D
-
I used Hotmail and received everything fine.
-
I used Hotmail and received everything fine.
great, just great
oh yeah what does this "leet" mean for my post count? ;D
-
oh, ok. I've been on the email blast list for years. hell, i used to get the newsletters in the early 90s.
I'm just new to this message board.
thanks!
-
I just got the e-mail blast invite to my AOL account.
-
would it be bad form to enter the e-mail blast lottery too? ;D
oh yeah what does this "leet" mean for my post count? ;D
what IS that?!? i guess you've got circa. 2005 geek cred...
-
I also got an invite for this! Thanks Seth!
-
Not only bad form, but will disqualify you completely. Read the details in the e-mail:
"Limit 1 entry per name/email address. If more than one entry is received from a name/email address, every entry for that name/email address will be cancelled."

Thank you Seth for putting this show on and the invite.
-
Not only bad form, but will disqualify you completely.
i was kidding.
-
I'm in. See y'all there!
-
Yay love it. Thanks 9:30 club :D
-
He ought to be disqualified just by suggesting we all meet while Clutch is playing on stage......... ::) ;D :D

what happens if people have the same exact name (ex:John Smith)
-
Did all the invites go out? My wife and I have separate forum usernames but neither of us received one... sigh. Are we SOL?
-
I'm in!
-
More important, for those who might get delayed forum tix and so jump on the blast list and then get the forum tix, would there be an issue there?
-
HC: i'd think that all forum tix have been handed out at this point... :(
I'm in!
i'm out.
-
From the initial forum lottery email: "Any forum entries that did not win tickets will be entered in the full email
lottery that will take place Friday morning."
-
got mine thru hotmail, no problem - schweet!
-
From the initial forum lottery email: "Any forum entries that did not win tickets will be entered in the full email

i can foresee it now: forum member didn't read that line, didn't win tickets through the forum lottery, gets the e-mail blast lottery invitation yoday, signs up (again)... and is disqualified for entering twice.
i hope the lottery organizers take this possibility into consideration!
-
Pretty sure Madgypsy doesn't have a say as to who is and isn't disqualified. ;)

Crappo. Finally got an email (eblast) and entered, then just read here that if you'd entered the forum rsvp you can't do the eblast one.
-
Thanks Seth!!! We're really looking forward to Monday night! It'll be a great b-day party for the club and a celebration of 20+ years of seeing shows at the 9:30 for me.
-
ooooh I got one. Can't wait.
-
Got mine. Thanks 930 club
-
I'm a little bummed that people who got ticketfly tickets weren't simply put on the list. We were excited enough to pay service charges for a free show where we didn't even know who was playing. Couldn't have been that many sold at the time.
-
We got our Eblast application. Thanks for the earlier info, forum people. :)
-
i predict a riot.
-
I...predict a ri-ot.
-
I'm in. Thank you 9:30 Club.
-
hmmmmm......... ;D
great i'm no longer leet :o
-
since you have 1338 posts now, i'm guessing when you hit 1337 posts, you become leet ;)
-
i'm pretty sure that i do, though. ;)
shadrach is a huge clutch fan too. and eddie. sweetcell's got no friends here in this situation.
we will be taking attendance during the clutch set.

knowing the staph's affection for clutch, i suggested their time in hopes of getting a reaction.
i didn't realize it would go this badly for me :-\
attendance... lol. lemme know where to sign in.
-
see everyone there... love the lineup! :)
-
Thanks 930 Club and its fabulous Staph!
We are superexcited for Monday!
Will there be set times posted later this weekend or on Monday? Will we be able to catch the last metro home or will it go into the wee hours of Tuesday morning and I should plan now for taking Tuesday morning off work?
-
I would love to stay late, but I took time off today and tomorrow so I need to get back to the grind Tuesday. Hoping Grohl appears early!
-
Hey, I just saw the info on the 3oth anniversary party somewhere else, and wasn't on the email list. So I added myself, but I figure the notices already went out on that from what people are saying here. What's this about an RSVP on here? I don't see it. And can I still do that? I'd very much like to make it to this thing. All else failing, if I'm just finding out too late, what time do people think would be good to get down there if I'm gonna try to wrestle my way through the mob to get tickets at the door? I saw some mention of that being an option, but that there won't be many.
-
What's this about an RSVP on here? I don't see it. And can I still do that?
that ship has sailed as well, in fact it left before the e-mail list one did. just like you had to be on the e-mail list to get the e-mail invite, you had to be a member of the forum to get the forum invite (it wasn't a straight-up rsvp, it was still a lottery).
what time do people think would be good to get down there if I'm gonna try to wrestle my way through the mob to get tickets at the door? I saw some mention of that being an option, but that there won't be many.
doors are at 5 pm. how much earlier you want to be there is anyone's guess. an hour? three? who knows. outside of this bboard, has this show been generating any buzz? is the general public all over this thing?
-
I would guess yes, as I found it on the Clutch profile, then googled 9:30 Club 30th Anniversary party, and found a news article about it. Any idea how many is a 'small number' as far as what will be available at the door?
-
no idea. you might try asking over in the FAQ section of this bboard, the club is responsive to inquiries as long as it's information they're allowed/supposed to give out.
the club has a capacity of 1,200 in case that helps you decide what that "small number" might be.
-
Okay, so it looks like that's it then, get down there early and try to look more deserving than the rest of the mob.
-
Okay, so it looks like that's it then, get down there early and try to look more deserving than the rest of the mob.
it'll have nothing to do with looking deserving, and everything to do with being at the front of the line, i.e. getting there early enough. i'm strongly suspect 930 staph will keep things orderly and people in line, literally. do not expect a mob scene, it's first come first served.
-

word.
-
My recommendation would be to get there about 3:00 p.m. if you really, really want tickets. The show came up in the W. Post weekend "Going Out Guide" live discussion. Folks know about it, and many have Monday off to get over and wait for tickets.
-
So has anybody received email notification yet that they've been selected for tickets from the eMail Blast RSVP's list?? I have not yet....
Thanks.
-
nothing here - i entered in the forum contest and assume my entry carried over to todays contest
-
Nothing yet... still hoping!
-
Not I. Fearing I may have missed out again. *sigh* I'm trying to figure the wisdom of spending memorial day waiting in line. hmmmmmm . . .
-
Bring a grill and have a cookout while in line.
-
the club has a capacity of 1,200 in case that helps you decide what that "small number" might be.
selfishly, I was hoping to be able to roam...maybe not as much room as at the 25th anniv., but you know, enough to move about comfortably. It is a party after all. ;)
-
Bring a grill and have a cookout while in line.
gaddam that's a brilliant idea. i have tickets, but i'd show up early just to grill and hang out. i have no other plans on monday, i'd be quite happy to make the 30th anniversary party an all-day event. too bad having a beer on the sidewalk would be severely frowned upon. come to think of it - how legal is it to set up a grill on a public sidewalk??

i'm with you on that, but i suspect the club will be filled to its legal capacity. it's only fair that as many folks as possible have a chance to get in on the fun. the club will be emptier during the early hours of this event, so do your roamin' then :)
-
to be honest, I was surprised you had not asked if it was possible to oversell a free show. ;)
yeah, i was figuring that it might still be a roaming type of event, since not all want to see every performer. Or is that just me? ;) And, some people may just be stopping by for the party aspect?
Hoping there's a line up provided though, not to be pushy / rude, just trying to plan my evening.
is the parking lot open too?
-
actually, the last-minute and free aspect might ensure that it is a roaming event. i'll bet that some people will drink too much on monday afternoon and say "fuck it, don't feel like going anymore and the ticket was free so nothing is lost". others might get caught in traffic, or have a change in plans/overlooked plans, etc... and other than the sooper-dooper mystery headliner, none of the acts on the bill have a huge/rabid following so people might leave after their favorite leaves the stage. if the order on the announcement is correct, i could see how ted leo --> bob mould --> mystery headliner might not be everyone's cup of tea.
i remain hopeful.

Just curious - but I know a # of forum members who didnt get an email. What was the criteria (if there was any). And yes, we've been on here for awhile (although most of us no longer post regularly - excluding me).
I was hoping to get tix from the email blast, but that didnt pan out (assuming that by noon we were given notice). a bit bummed. yes im currently in NYC, but I used to go to a ton of shows when I was down there. And I was going to try and make the trip with a friend. Ah well.
Enjoy the show. And anyone that has an intention of offering me a +1, dont worry about it. The Pysch Furs will be awesome. Cant wait to catch them up here.
-
It sounds like doors open at 5pm. For those of you won the lottery, does it say what time the show starts? Thanks.
-
It sounds like doors open at 5pm. For those of you won the lottery, does it say what time the show starts?
nope, 5 pm doors is the only info we have. i asked about set times (http://www.930.com/forum/index.php?topic=20425.0) in the FAQ section - sounds like we won't know until some time on monday.
-
Have the emails been sent out to the email blast winners?
-
I predict a sellout, but very manageable crowd. People will be coming and going all day. Plenty of people won't show up (one of the mixed-blessings of "free"). Despite the overall killer lineup, there aren't any really big names listed to draw the masses. I think we'll be able to move around just fine most of the evening.
-

"Radiohead came and played at 2:00 in the morning," Hurwitz says. "All the events leading up to that, it was like, 'Wow, is this really happening?'"
I'm just posting this to tease y'all.
-
Have the emails been sent out to the email blast winners?
the email said winners would be notified by noon. still nothing here, so i'm guessing i missed out on both contests, damn it to hell
-
I wish this were a paid event. If it were 10 bucks or something you would weed out people who are just entering to win something. Plus it would probably cut down on no shows.
-

forum winners were told the same thing, and i didn't get an e-mail until 1:30 pm. just sayin' that the noon time isn't hard-wired.

agreed. i have the same feeling about freefest - is should be practically-freefest. on the upside, free = more no-shows = more room inside. on the other hand, it sucks that some people who want to go won't be allowed, while other who are allowed won't go. if the club insists on making it free, have people donate $10 to a cause (maybe even offer a choice of causes).
-
First post:
Winner!! via Eblast lottery. Got it at 3:37pm ;D

Only on this board would people argue that it should be a paid event instead of a free event where they THEMSELVES are invited!

That was from 2005. Interesting about Ontario theater. Only show I saw there was General Public with the awful openers the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Who could have predicted after that show that they would have become even moderately successful.
-
Or commenting that no shows to a sold out event is a bad thing. To me, that's a good thing.
I think the reasoning behind that was that potential no-shows are taking spots away from people who genuinely want to be there.
-
I won! Maybe this is my good karma payout for donating stuff to the holiday raffle :)

ding ding ding. i was thinking of others and not just myself... not everyone's strong suit.

You're not thinking of me or anyone glad to get in for free!.. There may be some people who are getting on the list who may choose not to go but how many?
Moreover, don't you think the 930 Club has taken that into account and awarded a few more tickets?
Really its a birthday party and we're invited NOT sold a ticket to it.
That's a great thing! They actually want us there and not just cause of our money!

LOL... I can't believe people are bitching that it's not a paid show!
-
Will the Ace of Cakes people be making a giant birthday cake? And if so, can I have a piece?
-
Cupcake cake!
x- you haven't been since 2008? you seriously need to come down, ticket in hand or not. I can't commit to giving someone my plus one yet but I'll know more of my status on Monday.
-
So, are we going to make a roll call for this shindig and designate a meeting spot where people won't show up, who say they will? ;D
-
It's a great thing. I went to the free HFS Nutcracker thing they had at the club in 1999 (I think). IIRC, I remember it was Tori Amos, Beck, and Foo Fighters.
It was 3/4 full at best - more like 1/2 full by the end.

ah, i see that you're familiar with the concept ;D
the fact that we won't know set times until monday means that we can't determine a meet-up time until monday. should you want to meet up, please check this thread as soon as set times are announced on monday. i'll do my best to pick a time that isn't too offensive - don't want to call it for a time that coincides with a must-see set (LIKE, SAY, CLUTCH. ya hear me, thatguy?). i'm thinking something like 7:00, but it will entirely depend on set times.

In.

Forum meetup? Aren't we being redundant? Isn't the whole show basically a forum meetup, since that's how most people got tickets?
I suggest people just wear things we can recognize them by. NKOTB can wear his Wolftrap t-shirt, Joe can wear his Soul Asylum t-shirt, Azag can wear his Tom Petty t-shirt, Dr . Doom can wear his DOOMLINK t-shirt, Jen and Todd from Bound can wear their bondage gear, Sweetcell can wear his t-shirt from that band with the tranny singer, Thatguy can wear his ear thingies, Julian can wear his Walmart gear, and Walkonby can wear his patchouli.

Dr . Doom can wear his DOOMLINK t-shirt
If such a t-shirt existed, it might carry an image like this:

walkonby won't be wearing anything . . . uhm by that i mean i was confused on the whole ticket obtaining process, so i will not be in atten/dance. i would say have a drink on me, but i'd rather proclaim "have sex with each other . . . on me."
-
i call dibs on twangirl.
-
aw, c'mon - someone get walkonby a ticket.
-
if someone offers walky a ticket will he go? ;D
-
Timing is everything and sadly, time isn't on my side. I have other obligations and there is just no way that I can work it into my schedule. The worst part is (besides missing the event) it's not even for a holiday party or anything else fun. It's that Monday thing. If it were on Sunday instead, I'd be there. Oh, well. I know it's going to be one fantastic shindig!
I got all the invites but didn't even bother for tickets since, unfortunately, there is just no way that I can attend. Didn't think that it was fair to clog up the system just that much more just to see if I could get them. Now I'm wishing that I would have just to give my potential winnings to Walkie. (Probably wouldn't work anyway since it sounds like you have to show ID when picking them up.)
Seth, you really know how to throw a party! Thank you for all the invitations. Better luck (for me) next round. Hope that you enjoy it just as much, if not more, than I know all the attendees will.
Happy 30th 9:30 Club!!!! You're the BEST!!!
-
there is some magical portal that may grant me a ticket . . . i think. will have to see if i get an email describing how i travel through such portal to acheive "being in" status. if i am going . . . i will be wearing a widespread panic shirt . . . naturally.

the portal master has thus indeed spoken . . . and my figurine piece has been placed on the board. i shall be allowed to move about and bop to the tunes of the evening. hope to meet everyone with a beer to chink glasses to and shout "good show" all arounds.

yes, i know this has been discussed countless times . . . but i am all excited that i am coming to the show this evening, and i plan on getting there early to get a parking space. so where can i go to get a drink and bite to eat (i eat anything as long as it is good) that is within close, as in i hate walking, walking distance from the club and back. i have never really explored what is around the club excect that gas station right there.

I can't say I have had their food, but I have had beer there. Not too bad for the drafts and I think they have a happy hour starting at 4, but not sure. I'm heading off to DC right now. I'm going to stop at the wharf to eat some seafood. Mmmmmm softshell crab sandwiches ;D
-
So, 5PM doors. Do we know what time the festivities begin?
-
I think I overheard somebody say it starts at 6 last night.
-
So, 5PM doors. Do we know what time the festivities begin?
no set times announced yet - 930.com only sez 5 pm doors, and no updates in the FAQ either. hopefully we'll know soon. 6 pm sounds about right.
as soon as we do know set times, i'll propose a meet-up time. i'm thinking the break before marti jones and don dixon - please check this thread a little later.
either way, i'll be wearing my orange t-shirt it an atari logo on it. can't miss it - come say hi.
-
I find it amusing that the writers of We Love DC don't actually live in DC.
About The Author:
Michael Darpino: Michael is a former bare-knuckle street-fighter who splits his free time between defending the little guy and championing the underdog. He has been haunting the concert halls, dive bars, and greasy spoons of DC for the last 16 years. His interests include live rock music, researching obscure military/political conflicts, and good hamburgers. He is a friendly grump, has wisdom beyond his years, and is on a life-long quest to attain music nirvana.
sounds like he lives here, no?
-
Ulitmate FAIL on anyone missing dixon/jones
-
how much time do you think each band gets? 14 bands (assuming??? is Dave Grohl) in all.
-
I don't post on here all too often, but I'll be wearing a green t-shirt with a nerve cell on it. I'd love to put some faces to names, so come on up and say hello. Really looking forward to tonight.
-
Ulitmate FAIL on anyone missing dixon/jones
There's really not much I consider missable(?) in the lineup. Maybe Ted Leo, just because he plays here all the time anyway. This is a stellar lineup from top to bottom.
-
Tiny Desk Unit playing first.
-
Anyone have an extra?

agreed. not much i want to miss either.
alternative: meet-up upstairs, maybe at the upstairs bar? that way people could continue to hang out together once the next band goes on (unless it's clutch, of course. see? i'm learning!)
Tiny Desk Unit playing first.
is that a statement, or your suggestion of what to skip? would be too early for a meet-up, i wouldn't expect everyone to be there yet.
smylie and 6949, a match made in heaven...
-
^ it's a statement. They are playing first.
-
yeah, i'm assuming the order on the invite is the order they'll be playing in.
-
smylie and 6949, a match made in heaven...
Smylie we posted at about the same time. Send me a PM if you haven't found one yet.
-
I (David Holmes) won two tickets via the forum lottery, but can't attend. :( Unforeseen circumstances and I'm honestly a bit upset (missing the Psychedelic Furs, damn it), but... -sigh-
I hope this is seen and two more people are allowed in or what not.
Apologies and, to those going, have a great time!

PM sent...

Assuming I find a ticket, i'll be wearing a yellow shirt with a smiley face on it. Since i wont know anyone else going, i'll be up for meeting up.
-

You changed your message -- I loved the original that you'd rather your extra go to a boardie who wants to see the show than friends who would complain all night. I hear ya. Luckily I've got friends coming who will love show! ;)

LOL The last two times I tried to take friends to the 930 club it was a complete disaster and I missed both shows. And I don't want to deal with the "will there be cute boys there?" and "what should I wear?" texts.
-
Many reasons, some beyond my control are keeping me from attending tonight. Sorry, 930 and thank you SOOO much for the opportunities and stellar line-up (I do wanna see Ted Leo, as I have not at this point). Hope you all have fun and my loss is someone's gain. Hope I can join in another party soon. Happy Anniversary, 930! :-*
-
if anyone has an extra ticket that I can somehow claim, that would be great.

The dood in question seems to have some cred, but not so much the site's founders/main writers. Even if he does live in DC, the founders/majority of the writers don't.
-
I don't post that often, but read this board every day for the the Just Announced shows and the witty banter. I was looking forward to shaking the hand of a few of you tonight, but it looks like I am going to be home with a fever. (I work in an elementary school, so it comes with the territory.)
I hope this is a fantastic night, and I also hope that someone will post periodically through the evening so I can complain about what I am missing.
Will some other old boardie sing along with Places That Are Gone and Follow You All Over The World for me?
-
So when are folks going to get there with no setlist up? I can't get there too early...
-
too bad that some folks are bailing. we'll get to meet next time, hopefully.
will this result in more tix being available for folks lining up outside?
-
So when are folks going to get there with no setlist up? I can't get there too early...
i'm going to try getting there for 6, since that's when the fun supposedly starts. i've never heard TDU and wanted to give them a listen but we'll have to see how that turns out.
-
Will some other old boardie sing along with Places That Are Gone and Follow You All Over The World for me?
Oh, most definitely.
-
From Henry Rollins Blog:
Tomorrow morning, I will fly from Portland OR to Dulles International and go to the 9:30 Club in DC to host the 30th anniversary of the club. Many bands will hit stage and do short sets. I will be bringing them on and off stage. I got the list of acts sent to me yesterday but the e-mail said that I am not at liberty to disclose any details, which is odd, you would have thought they would have wanted to get the word out as best they could. The e-mail expressly asks that none of the acts or set times, so I won?t. Should be a good night. I don?t know what one needs to do to get a ticket but it would be worth trying if you are in the area.
-

ohmigod Yes. But, I don't think I can get there earlier than 7:30 and am hoping like hell that doesn't mean I'm missing Tommy and the Fleshtones. That would SUCK, they are two of my fave live acts.
-
In dc now hot as fuck, still no set times huh
-
looks like an organized meet-up in the backbar won't be possible.
i'll generally be hanging out on the floor* by the cash-only bar (on the right-hand side as you face the stage). during the early portion of the evening, before it gets too crowded, it should be easy to make your way there. feel free to come hang out and chat between acts. me = bright orange atari t-shirt.
* i do not mean "hangout out on the floor" literally. well, not until 9 or 10 pm, anyway :o
-
I'll be on the floor towards the right as well. Bright yellow smiley face shirt. Here's hoping for a good time and a few surprises
-
Anyone still in need?
-
I hang over to the left, towards Food Food. Will be in white and green tee, kind of a green clover pattern on white t-shirt. Brown pants and comfy shoes for what could be a long evening.
-
Heya, Shemp -
<Raises hand> to the "anyone still in need" question. Silly me, didn't think to check in here on the forum earlier to see if anyone had an extra. Didn't win the lottery, and am just gonna head down the club in a bit, planning to arrive around 6 in hopes of getting in as someone's +1.
Cheers,
John
-
in line waiting to go in, baking like lobster, need to piss too great, just great
ill be in a blue shirt just hi to everyone wearing blue
-
I hang over to the left
perfect. at some point, the boardees on my side of the floor will line up and move forward in unison, snapping our fingers to the beat, meet you in the middle of the floor and get all west side story on your ass.
(*sigh*, if only i was that cool...)
-
A little bird told me Tommy Keene @ 730
-
THANK YOU little birdy!!!! Wish another little bird knew about the Fleshtones. ;)
-
can you ask tweetie when slickee boys goes on? :)
-
Little bird has limited knowledge.
-
I think Slickees are next, if that's Kim Kane just off stage.
-
Although a way short set, at least I finally got to see TDU!
What traffic did Henry get caught in?
-
Kane just introed Fleshtones.
-
Death to the Pixies.
15 year old car no ac. i haven't used deoderant in 10 years.

I've met Michael a few times. Even have a photo of him that I took of he and a few friends at a Walls of Sound Fest in Fredericksburg, Va. a couple years ago. (A cool Shoegaze festival that I use to attend.) I always got the impression that he lived in either DC or just within easy reach.
-
What traffic did Henry get caught in?
I was going to ask how traffic is / was...with all the festivities and return to towners. I have a car issue being one reason why I couldn't attend, esp. after being in traffic on Th/Fri/Sat.
Sorry I'll miss Tommy - never seen him either. Hoping this is an annual event (and on the weekend!;)).
I called, I can't transfer my tix, sorry Haggis and others.
-
Anyone who has seen Tiny Desk Unit back in the day and today, I'd love to hear your review. Those new to the band, especially those much younger, just wouldn't truly understand how inovative they were at the time. Kind of a little bit like Gary Nueman just before Gary Nueman was all the rage... yet, different. Very arty, and I don't mean that sloppy, anything goes bullshit Art school stuff.
-
Slickees next.
-
Slickees next.
thanks for the play by play. damn, i won't get there in time to see them. how long are the sets?
-
sethy just played with fleshtones
-
sethy intos slickee
-
Seth also had somwthing in his left ear as he played. I couldn't figure out if it was a matronome or his bluetooth earpiece that he couldn't be bothered to take out ;D.
Slikees ROCKING it right now.

-
tommys nephew on drums pretty good
-
Evens performing on balcony.
-
someone playing on balcony didnt catch name
-
Yeah, kid wasn't too bad!
Evens on now, playing on the balcony. Sounds a little small, compared to bands coming out of the main PA (they're minimally amplified over a portable PA). Intimate :)
-
so far no loons from here have found me great, just great
-
THATGUY ON STAGE!
Edit: cut off by seth ;)
Justin jones on.
-
lots of dave grohl sightings on twitter, heh.
-
Wml7: a bunch of us are oscillating between the right side bar and middle of the floor (currently leaning against the bar). I'd you don't see me, you're not trying ;)
-

Hank showed, just introed Bob
-
Bob did a solo set, with electric guitar.
All sets have been short so far, all around the 20 minute mark (TDU had 15 mins on the dot)
-
ted leo now
-

-
Roadie just tuned Grohl's blue electric. On next?

Yup ;D

"Come on down! Tix still available for tonights 30th Anniversary show @930clubdc! Plenty left! The Pietasters, Clutch, Trouble Funk and more!"
would have been nice to know a few hours ago ;)
-
pietasters now
-
Clutch now in to their third song. Pretty much blowing the place up. Highlight of the night, so far.
-
stayed glued in one spot for clutch as to not piss off the staff singer has a dave mathews look to him
-
looks like lots of people dispersed after dave, empty on my side
-
Man, Justin Jones sounded just middle of the road college-rock boring. I had to leave at that point and head down 9th for some Ethiopian food... but for me the good stuff was the early stuff. It was great to see Tommy Keene up there.
-
Left mid David Scream; back was aching too much. Saw a couple of TF members so I guess they're a go, no pun intended. Looks like it's true about the Furs canceling.
-
TF on.
-
pump it up
-
i think i just saw an atari shirt.must be one u loons
-
Channel 9 just show footage of Tommy and Evens. The story was all of eight seconds or so.
-
trouble funk still playing
-
Hey forum peeps, just popping into say hi and that I'm bummed to have missed out on the festivities and hanging out with together, but just got back into town after unplanned trip.
-
ugh disappointed i had to miss this. was the place pretty packed in or did it look like a lot of people who had tickets didn't show?
-
Cool night, even if I only caught half of it. But was a little disappointed the Furs bailed, and that Trouble Funk played the same song for 45 minutes as I waited to see if anything else was happening. Couldn't someone else have done better? And 3/4 of Fugazi was in the house, find a damn bass player and get on stage for christ's sake. What's it gonna take to get them to do something?
Thanks for the freeness Seth!!
-
Amazing time tonight. Just great all around. Dave Grohl with Scream performing Bad brains covers was icing on the cake. And who knew Seth could actually play drums? crazy ...
-
Crowded but not packed. Heard that there were a lot of no shows from people who won tix. What a bunch of donks. Their loss...
ugh disappointed i had to miss this. was the place pretty packed in or did it look like a lot of people who had tickets didn't show?
-
And who knew Seth could actually play drums? crazy ...
Seth has played drums before at the club. Previous time he played drums was at 2 or 3 a.m. in the morning May or June 2001 when Live headlined one of the days of the HFStival then was extremely late to the club coming from RFK to play a set early in the morning around 1:30 a.m.
-
Great show. Everyone was killer except for that Justin Jones fellow. "Everlong" solo was pretty cool. Scream with Grohl on geetar was intense! Can't believe Clutch was only allowed 15 minutes! Even with Psychedelic Furs canceling? Still anything free is fine by me. Happy Birthday 9:30!
-
Great show. Glad to see Henry was able to make it afterall. Clutch was one of my highlights. I've never seen them before. Wow.
Thanks Seth!
-
How did I go this long without ever seeing Clutch? Holy crap.
What a great time. Thanks to everyone who made it such a fun evening. Glad I was able to meet a few boardies...Sweetcell, Bombay, and the Director.
Thanks Seth and the 930!
-
Agreed. Clutch was amazing. Grohl/Scream was great. Love Keene, Mould, Marti/Don. Seemed to me the sound improved tons when Justin Jones was on. Nice voice, but zzzzz. I can do without ever seeing the Pietasters again. All in all a great night. Thanks, Seth!
-
Thanks to everyone for all the effort it took to make this happen. Great show/time. Jaguar, re: TDU, a friend who saw them in '79 or '80 said he thought they sounded more polished last night whereas during the original run, they were more of a no wave band.
-
Great show, perfect sized crowd (full but there was actually lots of room to move around, not lose your friends, get a beer and come back). Said hi to Sweetcell, Bombay and Doom. Phillidan, I spoke to a guy I thought was you because he was belting out "Places That Are Gone" -- just so you know, there definitely was singing along going on! Saw Smylie in his t-shirt but didn't get to say hi.
Alas I did end up missing The Fleshtones, heard good reviews. Tommy Keene was so great, as was Mould and Scream doing Bad Brains. I left near the end of Trouble Funk hoping I wasn't going to miss some big jamfest...it was a school night and I was beat, and happy.
Thanks to EVERYONE at the club, and I hope like hell there aren't any complaints over what was a great, well run, free show.
9:30 Forevah!
-
I did remark to a few people that the room felt comfortable throughout the night. Even at its fullest, moving around was easy.
-
Missed TDU and most of the Fleshtones because of a fire at a tire place on NY Ave. Had that whole area gridlocked. Still a great night, bummer on the Furs though I just saw them there last year, left before TF as friend had to get to Towson.
-
;D Had a blast last night. Thanks again to Seth and the 930 crew. The no-shows REALLY missed out but there were enough people there and yet plenty of elbow room. Plus the wife finally got a cupcake.
Hard to pick a single highlight as it really was a series of highlights - Clutch, Grohl's solo Everlong & Bad Brains covers with Pete Stahl, Bob Mould's Husker/Sugar/solo set, Tommy Keene (still really, really good)...., Slickees, damn it was all really good.
Had to take a seat upstairs during the last half of T-Funk's set, tho. My feet were killing me.
-
Redsock, you stayed to the bitter end? Saw you heading down to the backbar mid evening but you were too far to say hi.
-
Hey forum peeps, just popping into say hi and that I'm bummed to have missed out on the festivities and hanging out with together, but just got back into town after unplanned trip.
Kosmo, I will say, it was a little wierd that you and Bearman weren't there. We missed you!
-
Crowded but not packed. Heard that there were a lot of no shows from people who won tix. What a bunch of donks. Their loss...
No one is more sorry than I that I had to miss - I had car issues and no way to a metro so donk that.
-

Didn't he also join Foo Fighters a couple of years ago, and then played with the Slickees at the 25th anniv.?

I had to pick up my parents at the airport but their flight got delayed a few hours. I could've still gone but I would've probably just caught the Trouble Funk set. Sounds like I missed a great show.
-
Here's my take, fwiw.
Arrived at 7:20, stood outside for 10 minutes waiting for friend. Stood close enough to Seth to overhear him as Geraldo or some other Fox personality was interviewing him outside the club. Nice green shoes, Seth. And thanks again for letting me in. :)
Didn't see any of the bands before Keene, but still feel qualified to review them. Pretty decent, the whole lot.
Went in at 7:30 to the strains of Keene. Nice to see Tommy letting his grampa play the drums. Even nicer to see the sticks ceded to Tommy's young nephew. Did the kid get a backstage lesson from Growl? Sounded good, as did the whole band. Funny, though, I always thought these guys were supposed to be a middle of the road Britpop band. They had a bit more crackle than I was expecting.
Went to Backbar for a beer, came back up, and Ian Mackaye was playing a Dave Matthew-esque tune, and he had HIS niece on drums. Joe Marshmallow (nicely clad n his very retro, brand new straight off the streets of Rockville Soul Asylum t-shirt I might add) was looking up adoringly, it really was touching. Figured I'd have a chance to talk to Joe later, but never saw him. Probably left early with the disappointed masses who only got to hear one Foo song. Right, Joe?
After a few minutes, Henry Rollins appears, and man has he let himself. Shaves his head now too, so maybe he's straightedge now. And the piercings and other body mods, nice touch Hank. Hank introduces Seth, who introduces Justin Jones as the next big thing. I'm not sure about that (this guy got the gig because he's Seth's nephew, right?), but anybody that dedicates a song to farmers is a-ok in my book.
While Jones was playing, I noticed a dork in an orange "can't miss me" Atari t-shirt with some hot eye candy on his arm. As Jones ends and the strains of Old 97's kick in, I muster up the courage to hit Sweetcell up for the beer I won in a bet five (or more?) years ago, but have never collected because our music tastes have never merged and brought us into the same room until now. Thanks again for the beer, Sweetcell. Nice to finally meet you, and your lovely wife. And folks, Vansmack was right. Sweetcell and I both lucked out in the wife department.
Then the real Henry Rollins shows up, and the fake Henry Rollins is relegated back to his local celebrity status. Henry introduces Bob Mould, and it becomes apparent that Henry's missing 30 pound of muscle has been grafted onto Bob's tummy, and it aint muscle anymore. God bless middle age.
Then Henry is back and intros Ted the leprauchaun. His set really made me hungry for some Lucky Charms...I had to settle for Golden Grahams when I got home.
Then Henry introduces the third solo middle aged white guy with guitar in a row, Dave Growl. I have to admit I can't name a single Foo song, so the idea of a bunch of bros singing along to Foos wasn't really calling out, and a 10 minute pee break was. But then a great thing happened. Dave ceded the spotlight to some guys who looked more like government workers than Dave Growl, and the game was on. Definitely one on the highlights.
Am I forgetting anyone? Was Clutch next? We went downstairs for another beer. The lovely bartendress actually must have seen me for the beer geek I was, and let me try three generous samples (unprompted) in addition to the beer I finally settled on. Very nice!
Went upstairs and heard the last Clutch song. Much better than I had anticipated.
Oh wait, Pietasters were before Clutch. Second special mystery guest of the night. American Idol champ Taylor Hicks fronting the Pietasters. They played the second best song ever about Maggie May. Side bar story: Years ago, we went to a free show by the Pietasters at one of the Fairfax parks. This local
politician, who was the wife of (then) U.S. Congressman Tom Davis, introd them and said " Ladies and Gentleman, the Piemasters!"
WAs it Trouble Funk next? They were awesome. Definitely the highlight of the night. Definitely Julian's worst nightmare. Was that Ted Leonsis not dancing up in the penalty box? He was later replaced by a rather stiff but at least dancing Barack.
I think that was it. I drove home down 395 in my 95 Saturn blasting Rod Stewart's Greatest Fucking Hits, which really capped it off. Thanks to all who made the event happen. I guess that's were the $7 Yuengling money all went.
-
Forgot to add the wife was a little confused by my over-tipping the bar tab. With the tix being free and all I felt it was the right thing to do.
-
It was indeed a great show. I was on the left side of the stage, right in front of the area where the staff walks to the backstage. I must say there was a couple of cute staff girls who were working that area ;D Ended up drinking too much when I said I would just have a few. The bartender I had was really sweet. The beer I wanted was out until they changed it. I ordered some other beer the rest of the night. When I went to close out my tab she remembered my original beer and gave it to me on the house. Great staff ;D It wasn't too crowded in there, which was a good thing. Everyone was good. Never seen Clutch before and they were really good. Dave/Scream was awesome. Never seen Bob Mould either and he sounded good. Trouble Funk played a long set. Just like one person said earlier they sounded like they played the same song for 45 mins haha. Overall great night. Thanks Seth and staff for a good time. ;D
-
Showed my 10-year-old a picture I took of Bob Mould on stage. She said 'He had 30 seconds left to play?' Cute.
-
Loved the show. Highlights for me were Tommy Keene Band, Don and Marti, Ted Leo, & Grohl/Scream. Surprised by the bluesiness of the Clutch. Very different (better) than my expectations. Ran into an old college friend, and got to shake hands with Ted Leo and tell him i love his music. goodtimes.
Thanks Harry, Seth, Rich and staph for a great night!
-
Thanks, Seth, for putting together a wonderful night. Everything seemed to go smoothly, even with cancellations, delays, and whatnot. The 9:30 Club continues to demonstrate why no other club in the country comes close to being the class establishment that the 9:30 is.
-
Was that Ted Leonsis not dancing up in the penalty box?
That was Mr. Leonsis up there. Right before Clutch I was feeling particularly talkative and kindly asked him from down on the floor to part ways with Gilbert Arenas. His response was a "now-now" shaking of the index finger.
He was later replaced by a rather stiff but at least dancing Barack.
I thought the guy in front was of me was going to go out of his skin when he saw the Obama cutout. He kept shaking his fist at the lady holding it up to show his total and complete disapproval of our president.
-
Pretty sure that was Marti with the cardboard Obama.
-
Super fun, amazing night! So grateful I got to witness that.
THanks one and all!
xoxo

Didn't he also join Foo Fighters a couple of years ago, and then played with the Slickees at the 25th anniv.?
Not that I know of. I know Seth was not behind the drum kit in 2000 or the 2005 9:30 Club Foo Fighters appearances. 25th anniversary show I didn't attend. The only time I've ever seen Seth behind the drumkit at 9:30 Club was when Live played after headlining the HFStival in 2001. The show started at 1:30 a.m. in the morning. Ended at around 3 or 3:30 a.m.
-
Sethy also played drums with Chuck Berry at Virgin Fest ;D
-

Guess I was in front of you but I thought he responded with the Gilbert Arenas finger guns.

That's MISTER Seth per TF.
-
Guess I was in front of you but I thought he responded with the Gilbert Arenas finger guns.
He DID do the finger guns! I didn't hear the original comment so I didn't make the connection at the time.
-
Seth also played with Barenaked ladies at MPP and while i wasnt there with Robbie Williams
-
Seth has sat in on drums with Thievery Corporation a number of times.

what a fun, fun night. the club had a great vibe going on. people seemed a little friendlier and staph were in an extra-good mood. music was fun and changes were fast-paced so we we never left waiting for long (helped by the fact that all performers used the same amps and drum kit). as mentioned by others, getting to and from the middle of the floor was a piece of cake all night long.
musical highlights: CLUTCH!!!, the fleshtones and the slickees were fun, tommy keene was more rockin' than expected, the evens playing up on the balcony, and i'll never tire of hearing grohl do a solo version of "everlong" from 20 feet away. he was good but i didn't feel that i connected with bob mould. justin jones is very talented but i feel his sound is sorta typical country-rock - he might need a little something to distinguish himself in order to really break out. to those who said "trouble funk played one song for 45 minutes" - have you never heard go-go before? i didn't take much note of what BT was spinning between sets (spent most of that time talking), and left as TF was finishing up. did anyone stick around after the live music? i heard that BT was going to spin for a while longer and get in to his more typical techno fare.
met for the first time mr. ford, mobius, and eros. old(er) acquaintances that had to deal with me included bombay, bags, joe, callat703, and none other than thedirector. hope i'm not forgetting anyone, if i am blame it on the dogfish raison d'etre. yikes. hearty back-slaps to thatguy, madgypsy, samfresh, and all the other AMAZING staph members who made last night happen.
loved your review, james. i suspect that people who weren't there might be scratching their heads at some of your descriptions. too bad, they should have been there.
seth also joined thievery corps one year for their annual christmas shows, he played percussions.
thank you, 930 club, for a great night last night - and all the great nights over the years. here's to 30 more.
-
Seth plays drums every now and then. It's always fun, but it happens enough that it's not a huge surprise.
I had a GREAT time last night. So many great moments. Grohl + Scream covering Bad Brains songs...Tommy Keene and Seth sitting in with Marti/Dixon... Ted Leo covering 3.... the back-to-back party of The Fleshtones/Slickee Boys...Tommy Keene being much rowdier than I expected... the mighty Trouble Funk...Mould's powerful mini-set...wow. Rollins is the perfect show for something like this. A hell of a show.
Thanks to Seth and everyone for putting this together. Well done!
-
Guess I was in front of you but I thought he responded with the Gilbert Arenas finger guns.
He DID do the finger guns! I didn't hear the original comment so I didn't make the connection at the time.
That's hilarious! I was obviously in for far too many Newcastles at that point.
-
I am bummed to have missed Monday night's festivities, but I was exhausted (and had also spent the bulk of Sunday night at the club).
Glad to hear it was a good time!
-
Has anyone mentioned yet how much more pleasant it is when the club isn't so overcrowded? ;D
-
To echo everyone else, great show, this was my HFStival. Trying to figure out some setlists, if anyone can add to these I'd appreciate it:
Dave/Scream:
Everlong
Choke Word
At The Atlantis
Stay Close To Me
Pietasters:
?
Maggie Mae
Out All Night
-
Has anyone mentioned yet how much more pleasant it is when the club isn't so overcrowded? ;D
indeed it was.
question: what were alcohol sales like last night? when not over-packing the place, i wonder if the reduction in number of tickets sold is offset by the increase in drink receipts? when the club is packed it's harder to make it to the bar, one worries about losing their spot, etc = lower bar sales, you'd think.
-
Thanks to everyone at the 9:30 Club for putting on a very memorable event as well as thanks for the blueballs of the 15 min Clutch set ;) hehe
BT was suppose to spin a lot longer, but since Trouble Funk had the go-go goin' it ate into the time. Loved it when BT spun "Cuts You Up" by Peter Murphy before Henry came out to intro Bob.

That made me so happy...

all of you clutch virgins might notice that you have a beard now. it's normal. don't worry. if they had played an entire set, it would have been longer, fuller, and on fire. a common side effect of the pure rock fury.
NEVER DOUBT US AGAIN!
thanks for coming out, y'all. i'm still wiped out, but it was a great day. luckily for all of you, seth cut me off before i got to do my hank impression.

I shaved this morning and it has already grown back.

I must say, there were quite a few converts in the crowd around me. I heard lots of, "I can't believe I haven't seen these guys before." From some of my friends who are definite going to see them again.
-
Anyone recall the exact phrasing of Justin Jones's "This song is about farming" line? It was an unexpected hilarious/awkward moment, at least for me..... a strange-for-the-setting intro to a song.
-

Oh damn if they had unleashed the "Pury Rock Fury," the crowd would have been in total awe. Neil would have had to be more "Careful with that Mic" before the "Electric Worry" and delivered the "Big News" as the audience found some "Spacegrass" before "Escaping from the Prison Planet"
okay I'm done...

Highlight for me was Trouble Funk. Those guys really know how to put on a show. Also loved seeing the Slickee Boys and Bob Mould for the first time. And it was cool seeing Tommy Keene and the Fleshtones for the first time in 25 years.
Really didn't like Clutch at all. Probably would have left during their set if I knew the Furs weren't playing. I think Henry Rollins did a great job as the MC.
Really sad no Psychedelic Furs. Anybody know why they canceled?
-
Redsock, you stayed to the bitter end? Saw you heading down to the backbar mid evening but you were too far to say hi.
Yeah, we stayed till Trouble Funk finished. Went to the backbar to scope out the better beer and catch a breather. And, well, it was Justin Jones playing. Can catch him at Iota once a month...
Sorry I missed you and the other boardies. Randomly caught Bombay in passing, and saw Lily napping in the side room upstairs, but that was about it.
-
The Furs cancelled when they learned you disapproved of Clutch.

Ahhhh... sorry Nothing personal. I SHOULD CLARIFY. I know there were people with real reasons that couldn't make it, The 'donk' thing was more for the shiftless lazy people that take free, especially something as awesome as last night free, for granted when those tix could have gone to others that would have killed to have been there. :)
Crowded but not packed. Heard that there were a lot of no shows from people who won tix. What a bunch of donks. Their loss...
No one is more sorry than I that I had to miss - I had car issues and no way to a metro so donk that.
-
hopefully everyone who went through the trouble of lining up outside before doors got tickets.
-
And big standing ovation for not just Tommy Keene, who was awesome, But his Nephew when he started playing the drums. How old was that kid, 14 or 15? He was WAILING! Kid definitely brought the thunder.
-
Dunno if Keene's nephew is 15 or 16, but I think he's finishing 10th grade.
-
I had one of the best times of my life
I cannot express what a joy that was to have all of these great people in one room in the mood they were in
I am talking about the performers, the staff and...most importantly...YOU
I know it sounds awfully corny & contrived but the 930 Club is really all of you people, and you should be very proud of who you are, because you are the community that we all talk about here
thank you all for a wonderfully magic night, even if you weren't actually there
but...for those who were...well...you know what happened

Per Ted Leonsis' Blog:
9:30 Club 30th Birthday
June 1st, 2010
What a fun night and congratulations to the 9:30 Club for 30 years of great local entertainment.
Henry Rollins was there.
Ted Leo rocked.
Clutch wailed. They were loud and proud.
Dave Grohl surprised folks with an appearance and did Bad Brains songs. We met him and he is a really great guy and nice person.
And Trouble Funk closed it out!
We all had a great time. Thanks Seth Hurwitz who played drums with the Flesh Tones and then on ?Play that Funky Music White Boy? with Trouble Funk.
Trouble Funk ? GoGo music. Wow!!! Set that way back machine on stun!
Rock on.
-
disappointed ... that Trouble Funk played the same song for 45 minutes as I waited to see if anything else was happening.
Dude, that's go-go. DC style. As the Washington Post ad used to say, if you don't get it, you don't get it...
Anyway, thanks to Seth for a great night. It was a generous act to throw a party like that for free. It brought back some great memories of the best parts of my lost youth.
-
Thanks, Davyboy, appreciate it :) I am sorry I missed it, but very happy others had a great time. (hope to see Tommy, Dave and Ted at one point or another!) I even missed out on my TF commemorative ticket. ;P Hoping there will be another soiree again one day! (selfishly hoping for a weekend/non-holiday due to traffic/festivities). Seth, you did a really great job and sounds like you had a great time too. Thanks again & to everyone for opening up your "home".
Oh - some great descriptions in the article by Chris Richards, by the way.

These are great-- we can see ourselves in the TF audience shot. Any chance of purchasing 8 by 10s or so?
-
did walky make it out to this?? all has been quiet from his side ;D
-
oh yeah, i say smylie at one point but i was talking with someone else. i was going to say hi as soon as the conversation was over, but by the time that happened he moved on.
walkies? you there? where you there?

indeed we can! my orange t-shirt makes it pretty easy to spot me against the far bar. i'm even easier to pick out on the evens pic.

Sorry I missed you and the other boardies. Randomly caught Bombay in passing, and saw Lily napping in the side room upstairs, but that was about it.
Sorry I missed you, Sock of Red. Saw Bags earlier in the evening. I think I dozed during Clutch-I just couldn't get into them at all. (Don't be hatin' on me you Clutch fans! I appreciated the quality of the musicianship but the music just wasn't to my personal taste.) And the Pietasters allowed for more nap time.
Tommy Keene and Fleshtones were highlights for me. And Dave Grohl.
I just loved that there was such a focus on DC musicians-didn't even mind that Psych Furs cancelled. (I saw them earlier in the year anyway.)
Thank you Seth!!! Was an incredible and legendary evening!
-
So, any chance of a DVD or CD or download of the show for those of us who love the club but could not score tix ??
-
there were video cameras around - what were they for? looked like some pretty serious video equipment.
-
The Furs cancelled when they learned you disapproved of Clutch.
This really is the only answer. ;)
-
Highlights:
Slickee Boys
Tommy Keene - esp. the last song.....
Clutch, of course
Scream (I'm glad Dave Grohl only get to sing once)
Marti Jones/Don Dixon (except last song - sorry Seth, this duo do not need a drummer!)
sorry, The Fleshtones are almost unbearable to watch.
-
Well looks like I destroyed another computer (this time my netbook) by flipping ice tea on the keyboard..sigh... so I've been using the internets a bit less....lasted all of three months.
Of course thanks to Seth and IMP and the 930 staff for organizing a world class event for us....Being handed the ticket on the way in at the door was a nice touch.
What I'll remember about this was how at one point I had Dante (Black Cat owner) a few feet away from me (on side of stage) with helmet under one arm, sporting his blue hair and bobbing in glee to the Scream/Dave Grohl set...That was the special moment if too short.
I'll also remember at one point on other side of the side stage seeing Henry Rollins, Ian Mackaye, Bob Mould , the bassist from Scream, Liz the booker for IMP, etc. hanging out.. Quite a group.
I'll remember Liz with her clip pad at one point running by the left hand bar to get backstage..
I'll remember Seth on the VIP box checking out Justin Jones.. what he sees in the guy I'll never know!
I'll remember Ian Mackaye once again turning the worst performance of the night and just getting by on that built in cred he's got.. The Evens set was beyond boring. If it wasn't Mackaye would anyone have cared?
On the minus side I'll remember Clutch being told to end their set NOW when they'd just about started a song and where getting going only to make way for Trouble Funk to take 30 minutes to set up and mug for pictures. I guess thats just the way it is... TF did have the crowd going so maybe it was for the best but.. The Obama cutout or what have you during Drop the Bomb was cool..
To me the evening wasn't about the music- which wasn't really all that much up my alley- but about celebrating the 930 and by extension DC so ultimately about us which is as it should be.

my story is simple, and perhaps a bit sad. on my way to the show from my forest abode, i made it 20 minutes when i noticed a sound, a strange sound at that. as if the road had suddenly changed grooves on my needle skip traction. i had to pull off in a hurry to check out to see. yes . . . there it was, a front wheel flat tire. and not just a hole, or a leak with it's hiss and you know you can't make it much further, but rather a slice or a gash and my tire was whole wheat shredded. on a bolt. it was a bolt in the road that i had hit and it destroyed a new tire i had for two months. i knew right then and there that it was no way i was attempting to drive 2 hours up and 2 hours back on a doughnut. and it cost me $150. oh yeah . . . as i was changing it, just to be nice, the clouds opened up into a pour down water bucket that enforced even more that ole murphy's law chestnut, "hah hah hah human, you are not going, so have some rain pain to wash away your baby tears." the end. another time forumers.
-
dang, that sucks walkies. sorry to hear that.
on the upside, you didn't get mugged and shot - which is an inevitability in mean ol' DC, right? silver lining, silver lining...

good write-up! had me re-living the evening. one small factoid correction, because i'm annoyingly nit-picky this way: you wrote "Bob Mould simply owned the stage. He stood stage right and played unaccompanied." he was actually stage left, also know as house right. "stage left" and "stage right" are always from the performer's perspective, not the audience's (example (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stage_%28theatre%29#Stage_directions)).
i'll stop now :-X
-
Thanks sweetcell. Both for enjoying the article and the correction! Someday I will get that stage-left/right thing through my thick skull.

I'm happy to read that Clutch has finally made believers out of several of you. And all it took was a free show. I think over the years there's been a thought that turning you folks onto Clutch was this conspiracy that eddie, thatguy and myself cooked up to trick you into listening to some crappy band. That just couldn't be further from the truth. We see and hear literally hundreds and thousands of bands a year here and there just isn't another band that is as consistently amazing show after show, year after year. So to those of you that liked what you saw and heard, come see them in all their glory the next time they come through 9:30 and those of you that remain non-believers, sorry we weren't able to indoctrinate you, but hey it's your loss.
Pure Rock Fury.

I'll remember Ian Mackaye once again turning the worst performance of the night and just getting by on that built in cred he's got.. The Evens set was beyond boring. If it wasn't Mackaye would anyone have cared?
I noticed a bunch of people around me looking at their watches and band lists during the Evens set. It was definitely a come-down after Tommy Keene. I mean, musically they are talented and interesting, but there is still that Puritan spirit that underlies most things Dischord -- it's a bit like switching from reading Jack Kerouac to Nathaniel Hawthorne. I don't think the Evens have ever played the 930, and has Fugazi ever? Maybe not since Minor Threat has Ian performed on the '30s stage?
I think my favorite moment was when Tommy Keene joined Marti Jones and Don Dixon on stage, and Seth got in on drums. It reminded me of the spontaneous spirit of the early years of the club. Something you might have seen at dc space, actually.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, and IMO the two quotes above me are silly, with HUTCH's being downright ridiculous and laughable, IMO of course. The Evens set was great, wether it was your cup of tea or not should have been kept to yourself, again IMO. Anything MacKaye does will have cred. He's earned it, deal with it. Fugazi has played the 9:30 on V street. I know because I was there.
The whole night was a celebration of the great 9:30 club which has been supporting and showcasing the eclectic variety of what the amazing DC scene has offered, does offer, and will continue to offer, whay can't you just let it be what it is? Sometimes people have to interject negativity no matter what the situation may be. Blows my mind.

I'm sorry to rain on your Ian Mackaye is DC God and you must love everything he does even if its boring parade.
My post was very positive. It was a great night. I thank Seth for it..I enjoyed it all.
There were better performances and worst performances: the Evens set happened to be a bore.. so what? Its the end of the world for you if someone thinks the Evens set is boring?
Deal with it man.
-
Man Up ;D
-
wether it was your cup of tea or not should have been kept to yourself
And there's that puritanical spirit I'm talking about... LOL
-
I've got 20 bucks that says Ian Mackaye has a small penis.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
-
wether it was your cup of tea or not should have been kept to yourself
Dear IMO,
Have you spent any time on this board? No one keeps their opinions to themselves. And Sir Mackaye is hardly above reproach, he's as fair game as James Ford's wife or Julian's, er, everything. IMO
I missed The Evens, and while I'm glad that piece of DC history was represented, sort of, if they sucked they sucked. IMO. Every show has its highs and low. IMO
-
i thought the evens were fine - for 15 minutes. not sure they would have held my attention much longer. i liked their set-up on the balcony, so they offered something visually different. i like ian's stories, probably more than the music he played.
i also think that for some people here, ian stirs up too much emotion to be able to appreciate on his current merits (or objective lack thereof). but that's just, like, my opinion, maaaaaan.
-
If people didn't have O's there would be no need for this board.

In answer to your first round.
Yes. Obviously. I'm aware of that. Did not know 'that' about James Ford's wife . And yes it was IMO. Thought I would just stress that point. Sorry it offended you.
I agree every show has it's highs and lows. But in my naive, puritanical mind, I just assumed this would be one show that would be given a pass from anything negative because of how great it was, and what it stood for overall. Obviously I was wrong. Definitely not just about The EVENS, more for ALL the nitpicky complaints I have read. So continue to flame me guys, this is the last I'm going to comment on the subject.
-
Wow you sure give up fast.
-
Yeah, it's like poking a dead animal with a stick.
-
But in my naive, puritanical mind, I just assumed this would be one show that would be given a pass from anything negative
Your mistake is in thinking that independent/critical thinking is a "negative" thing that sometimes requires a "pass." Now run along and practice your Fugazi dance.
-
now i wished i had attended so i too could contribute to this new, last pulse topic of a thread i thought was near dead "a minute" ago.
-
my first hearing of the dischord sound was seeing the evens @ fort reno in 2005 and i think they are amazing. real hooks, harmonies, dynamics, arrangements, musicality. you get older, you sit down, you say more with less - what's wrong with that? i've gone back to check what i've missed, and it's incredible as well, but this is just a more mature thing.

I have seen former Mackaye projects like Embrace and Fugazi and they never did anything for me. The Evans seem all right.
Really I think Clutch is one of the worst bands I have ever seen but people on here seem to like them so go figure. Different people like different stuff.

yes, it has all of those things, and intellectually I can watch them play and say "that's impressive." And it still does nothing for me. Music for me is more than the sum of the pieces, and something's missing there. The "keep it to yourself" attitude of fans like Davyboy certainly doesn't help, but that's not the main factor.
It's definitely not "just a more mature thing."

Hate to ask - but what't the name fo the first song the Evens played?
I thought it was great. The songs that followd were just ok.

Nothing really new to add, but thanks to all the people behind the 9:30. A thing that sort of struck me about the Anniversary show (probably more accurately 'Reunion Show' as it felt not unlike a family or school reunion) was that there seemed to be a pervading positive vibe - an affection born from the varying shared histories of the crowd with the Club and/or each other and by extension DC - and each performance served to illuminate (or be illuminated by) that sense of affection. I got there at 7:30ish to the sound of 'Windfall' over the PA and everything that followed - literally everything . . .through to BT playing a nice high energy set to a handful of people) was thoughtful, inspired and cool. After Henry Rollins intro, seeing Ian McKaye grooving to Trouble Funk didn't seem the least bit strange (although the thought of Rayful Edmund grooving to the Beach Boys on the Mall July 4 did cross my mind as an equivalent) . . .and at the end of a night where diverse musical styles seemed unified, it made perfect sense. I'll just add that while I enjoyed every set, I thought Bob Mould in particular crushed it.

I'll have the full set up tomorrow.
These are great-- we can see ourselves in the TF audience shot. Any chance of purchasing 8 by 10s or so?
Sorry for not following up sooner. Busy week. You can see more of my photos and purchase prints here:

the first evens tune was 'cut from the cloth' from 'get evens' (their 2nd cd).
anyone hear anything about a 3rd?
-
Thanks for naming that tune.
And damn leafblower's pics are awesome.

Yeah, he stole the show by far.
I'll just add that while I enjoyed every set, I thought Bob Mould in particular crushed it.

What this interactive already posted? I think some of the interviews are new, but I believe some are also from the 930 F St. documentary [about the club].

Forgot to mention this earlier...
All the cluelessness about BT explains why I never got any responses regarding BT whenever I've brought him up in the past. Had assumed that others just didn't like him which totally baffled me since I know he'd appeal, at least somewhat, to a good number of you. Maybe it was just him being an unknown issue.
Anyway, I recommend this album (http://www.amazon.com/Movement-Still-Life-BT/dp/B00004TIQ6/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276240882&sr=1-6) of his that I know a lot of you would enjoy.

He was actually my least favorite part of the show. He started with fairly generic 80s hits (I think he actually played a Fixx song twice - once would have been more than enough) then went into dance music that totally isn't my thing. I didn't think he caught the vibe of what the early days of the club were all about. I found myself wishing that Twangirl was dj-ing.
-
i love dance music, and BT isn't my thing. what i've heard of his music has been to mainstream/clubby for my tastes. i've had no interest in pursuing.

Nothing booked for the 31st.
Have to do something! 31 years on the 31st has too nice of a ring to it.
