Title: Vertical earbud banded headphone apocalypse
Post by: bellenseb on December 20, 2012, 10:37:53 am
These are my preferred style headphones, but they have become impossible to find in stores. Best Buy, Target, etc. have hundreds of high-end cans and bandless earbuds but none of my banded buds. It's easy enough to order online when I need a pair, but kind of shocked.

Does everyone really prefer earbuds for their cheap lightweight headphone needs? Banded buds stay in my ears much better and they rest on my neck when I need to take them off. AM I ALONE

I love earbuds.  Have you tried a running store?  There are alot of earbuds used by runners...

Does anyone have or use a headphone amp with their iDevice?  Something like this? (http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/24/fiios-e17-alpen-headphone-amplifier-peaks-performance/)  I keep hearing about portable amps, but there's so much snake oil in the "audiophile industry" that I have doubts about whether these things are worthwhile.

Earbuds hurt my ear and regular headphones also hurt my ears. I need to find the right pair, I always seems to find headphones that [over prolonged usage] press on my ears too much and it ends up hurting after an hour of use or so. Same thing with ear buds. I need to find ones that conform to my gigantic, El Salvadorean ears.

i have two sets of earbuds.  my fancier buds are Klipsch S4.  they sound awesome.

my everyday cheapies for jogging, commuting, etc are Sony MDR-AS40EX (link (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR-AS40EX-Active-Headphones-Earbud/dp/B0015AFOR8)).  i like the "earclip" design better than a headband.  sound is quite good.  they aren't the strongest on bass but i can take care of that via equalizer.

I have the Plantronic wireless backbeat 903+ as my earbuds for running and commuting, and a set of UrbanEars Plattan's for traveling.

I always go to head-fi.org first for research.
Well organized and has user reviews and rankings. A bunch of audiophiles that cover all prices and generally aren't snobs.
Here's their 2012 Holiday Gift Guide for in-ear.
http://www.head-fi.org/a/2012-head-fi-holiday-gift-guide-in-ear (http://www.head-fi.org/a/2012-head-fi-holiday-gift-guide-in-ear)

I got a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50s over-ear headphones based on reviews. The sound is better than most headphones that are twice the price.

I hate earbuds.  Uncomfortable and they always fall out when I run.  The best phones I have found for running are these Sennheisers (http://www.headphones.com/Headphones/Sennheiser-PMX680-ADIDAS-SPORTS-ON-EAR-NECKBAND-HEADPHONES-WITH-VOLUME-CONTROL-66739.html?a=HPSFRG&utm_campaign=plusbox-beta&gclid=CP2osLblqbQCFY-d4AodCTEAVw).  They stay in place and the fit is loose enough that I can detect any kamikaze cyclists or would-be muggers bearing down on me from behind.

I went through a couple of pairs of those Sonys that sweetcell linked but they crapped out after a few weeks due to the apparently unusually large quantity of sweat I produce in the ear region.

I think it's probably best not to run with music playing in your ears, particularly if you're crossing streets or running on a the side of a road with no sidewalk.

I do not run with headphones or music.  One - I love to listen to the outdoors, Two - I'm deaf in my right ear and can't hear much anyway, Three - I need the other ear for listening for cars and dogs and other things which might injure me while running.

considering how much hair you have pouring out of your ears, i'm not surprised to hear this (and frankly, i'm shocked you can hear anything at all).

Are right folks, what are the people using these days?

I was using these Micro-USB plug headphones (http://www.amazon.com/Z-ero-Digital-Earphone-Gold/dp/B00YMMRAGE/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1459807335&sr=1-2&keywords=z%3Aero) instead of 3.5mm Analog plug to keep the digital sound and power the DAC, but this weekend I upgraded from the LG G4 to the LG G5.  The G5 uses a USB-C plug and the upgraded version (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/aero-digital-earphone-upgrade-to-hifi-music-now#/) aren't going to be ready until July (if they meet their target).  I tried a Micro-USB to USB-C adapter, but it didn't work.

So, I'm need of a stop gap 3.5mm analog in ear head set.  I'd like to stay in the $25-$75 range if possible as I only need to use them for a few months.

What say ye, people of the analog world?

I'll stick anything, in my two holes.  As long as they work, I'm easy.

Knowing nothing of this product aside from that gif, I am very curious what you think of it. It seems like something that will be cool in principle and horrible in execution. Are people near you going to be able to hear your music?

reviews I've read said people can't hear them next to you unless you have at max volume (no more than AirPods at max volume)
reviews online (toms hardware and WSJ) sold me on making the purchase plus the extra 15% I got off using my prime credit card on prime day

You can swap out the lenses for prescription too...in the $50 range (depending on options)
which I think is a big plus

Huh. Let us know once you’ve used for a few days. This is very up my wife’s proverbial alley.

Wow.  This is retread thread I can get into.

Yes, very interested in your opinions of those Bose Frames.  Hard for me to ever give up my Wayfarers - 148mm across the bridge is going to be too big for my head.  I'm less interested in the AR future than the sound quality.

I guess I should update my headphone arsenal:

Over The Ear:  Bowers and Wilkins PX (Bluetooth, 3.5mm, and USB-C Audio)
In ear - Bose SoundsSport Free Wireless
Google Pixel USB-C Headphones - throwaways in a pinch (I think I've used them once)

The rondo's are slightly smaller at 142mm...but more a feminine look

Recently moved to bluetooth buds for the gym, but their extra weight (from the amps presumably) makes them partially fall out while doing exercises on my back, just enough for the bass to disappear. The first pair I tried were terrible; the JBLs I have now are much better but still lose bass. Considering custom earpieces like these (https://custom.ultimateears.com/products/ue-5?variant=17326564868153&currency=USD&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzMKR74264wIVBp6fCh1I5QmrEAQYBCABEgLnQfD_BwE) (not necessarily these specifically).

I believe, this is, the correct answer.

Did we ever hear back on the sound quality and over all use of frames?

Bose just released a smaller pair of the alto lenses....

So....I can't say the sound quality it the greatest.
I'm no audiophile, so I'm not a good test case
It's fine for me.  But it only goes soo loud and it's just not the immersive experience you get from headphones

I tried on the Metro and the background noise was so loud at times I couldn't hear the music (cupped my ears as a solution...but annoying)

What I really like is I can put them on and have conversations with people.  My kids can listen to music in the car and I can have a pod cast going at the same time

I really hate the in the ear style buds.  I think I may need custom ones as I've never found a comfortable pair

I have been using them mostly for podcasts as of late and for that I think they are great

I don't ride my bike with headphones...as you can't hear things, which I think is super dangerous
So with these, I can take them on a ride.  (although 99% I just like biking without any music...it's my quiet time)

Also it's nice way to take calls.
They are fairly light which was suprising
the lenses are meh (they make some nice mirrored ones you can buy and prescription lenses are also an option)

My absolute biggest gripe...the charging cable is very unique ( a proprietary pogo-pin cable that adheres magnetically.)
and if you lose it you are screwed
As of a month ago there was no way to order a replacement, but read that if you contact support they will sell you one for $45

The case is nice, but they really should make a way to hold the charger so it doesn't scratch your lenses
simple little elastic loop attached to the inside would all that is needed
Battery life is great IMO  3.5 hours

Since the baby came I switched to contact lenses 100% of the time and thought about buying these yesterday as there were prime day sales, but I just couldn't pull the trigger given how much I love my Wayfarers.  I've worn them since high school and just can't give that style up.

Over-the-Air: Still love my Bowers and Wilkins PX
In-Ear for music, podcast, phone calls: Google Pixel Buds
In-Ear for video calls: Bose SoundSport Free
Wired Headphones: haven't used any in over a year....
