Gridskipper says Cancel These DC DJ & Dance Nights (http://gridskipper.com/338764/cancel-these-dc-dj--dance-nights)
the ones listed are actually some of my personal faves.
-
What's this guys deal?
-
I think it's a girl.
-
maybe she doesn't feel comfortable parading around in her underwear/sleepwear, and resents that other people do. ah, repression.
-
agreed - i think these are some of the best in the city, personally.
-
i agree with this article for the most part. especially the mousetrap write up.
-
They're a waste of time and $10 cover charge. What's the cover charge for anyway?
-
To hang out with people normally too cool to be seen in the same room as you? (not you personally, but in the general sense)

The clubs still need to pay their staff...

Um, and the talent...

Tried to post this as a comment on the article itself but it doesn't seem to be working...
Re: Underwear
BTW - many of us attend this night tongue firmly in cheek. I don't think it's quite the ego-fest you make it out to be.
Re: Mousetrap
Wait, you just knocked Mousetrap for the same thing you praised 80's Heaven and Hell for? I agree with you, it's gotten stale, but 80's night plays the same stuff every night and many of the DJ's don't beatmatch either (at least the times I've been)
Re: Hirshhorn
Thanks for clarifying this as needs improvement, because I think the concept is great and DC needs more stuff like this, just poor execution
Re: Blisspop
"trance-remix-asshole guy from NYC"
1) Tittsworth is local
2) he doesn't play trance
3) he's not an asshole by any means
Re: Nouveau Riche
Why dismiss this dance night based on being associated with DURKL, who give out free swag at the event? And if you dislike Pandahead what does that have to do with NR? The DJ's happen to be quite talented technically, their flyers and promotion are hilarious, and there is often a good crowd there having a fun time. And this is coming from someone who personally isn't a huge fan of the night, they play too much hip hop for me, but that's just my personal bias, objectively the night is a good one.
Full disclosure: I'm involved in putting on both Garutachi and Blisspop
-
I hadn't been to Mousetrap in years until this past November. I believe the time before that was when it was Backstage for $5 in 2000.
I've given it a go three times now since last autumn, and I've give up. They're in the middle of some "Mousetrap and friends" deal, which essentially means NOT Britpop. They've turned each Mousetrap night into Automatic or We Fought the Big One, which you could still go to on their own regular night.
Of course, the journalist has a point, playing only mid-90's Britpop all the time would get really old really fast, so why not sweeten the mix by adding the newer stuff ala Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, Franz? Essentially I've jumped ship and become a complete Liberation Dance Party convert.
*warning shameless plug*
btw, if anyone on here feels remotely this way I've been organizing a "Britpop" meetup group the last few months... http://britpop.meetup.com/54/ (http://britpop.meetup.com/54/)

Gridskipper is linkbaiting to draw traffic to their emerging blog. Bash a village's favorite dance parties, remotely; watch the natives get their panties in a bunch; watch traffic rise.

I wouldn't call it "linkbaiting." Gridskipper is a part of the Gawker network, and probably doesn't have any trouble getting hits at all.
That having been said - I don't think it's about bashing nights that are perennial favorites, as many popular nights were also mentioned on the same author's "Best Of DC DJ nights" entry. Everybody's entitled to their opinion - wouldn't people who post on a message board realize this?
Different strokes for different folks, man.
-
You're just proving the point. They respun one of their own posts with a more controversial title. Now people here are yapping about it. I don't count myself a gawker reader or a fanboy of the network. Even highly visible blog networks need to write attractive titles.

I'm sure your favorable opinion has nothing to do with the fact that your night got listed in the best of... ;)

What talent? DJ's have talent? I can piss seated, standing, and standing on one leg. Shouldn't I get paid for my talent?

yeah .. that's just plain ignorant.
as for the article itself, that crap about "trance-remix asshole from NYC" was all douche. to get so snotty on someone you don't even know, or even have the time to do research on ... it's like, hey tool lady, go back to writing tips on fag haggery (http://gridskipper.com/338504/a-handy-guide-to-dc-fag+hagging). Seriously, between this and the CP piece last week by Amanda Hess, there's too much energy spent on quips and too little on clues.

djs are like rappers . . . they steal other people's music and call it their own. that's why most people love it; they're just as unoriginal as what they are listening to.

thedirector, callat703 and i were indeed at the blond redhead show. good times.
thedirector hasn't been posting as much recently b/c work has cut him off. and if you know him, you'll understand why he isn't posting at night - things to see, people to do.
those who think that all djs are talentless hacks either lack experience or are close-minded. yes, there are a lot of bad or uninspiring djs out there just as there are a ton of bad or uninspiring bands. a good dj != human jukebox (what a lot of people assume they are). the fact that anyone can press "play" does make dj'ing acessible, but not everyone can keep a place dancing/interested all night long. and there are technical skills involved, depending on the quality of the dj: beatmatching, making sure the keys of two tracks fit together, and you can get very creative with how songs are mixed/mashed together. hell, just being able to get past what you think is good and play stuff that keeps everyone interested isn't the most common of attributes in people.

I should've disclosed that in my first post, but I didn't want to look like a spamtard. It has nothing to do with that - the only point I was trying to make was that Gawker gets a ton of traffic naturally.

You can't be serious. Are you implying that anyone could get on the decks and do what, for instance, DJ DK, Dave Nada, or Tittsworth do? You obviously have no clue what you're talking about.

I guess a better question might be...what retard would pay money to see/hear them do what they do, when there's plenty of live music as an alternative?

I don't know how some of you who have been members of this forum as long as you have still let these comments phase you.

Like the DJ Shadow show at 9:30 Club? Oh wait...

There are many, many retards in DC with too much disposable income. This is America. Bad taste runs rampant. I'm sorry if that smacks of Brian Wallalce language, but it's quite true.

People who say DJs have no talent are the same people who make crappy mix CDs.
I like me a good dance night once in a while, but that article actually makes some pretty good points. Mousetrap has been feeling stale for many years now. I guess it's comforting to know it's there, like an old dog by the fireplace.
I still miss Panic!, but after all this time, that would probably be feeling stale by now too, if it had kept on.
As for underwear parties... quelle freshman year.
Bliss-Pop is one of the best, I think, because Will always puts enough variety and new stuff mixed in to keep it fresh. It lost a certain je-ne-sais-quoi, however, when it got too big for the little back room at the Black Cat... intimacy was one of its charms.
I haven't been to the Hirshorn one, but that actually sounds promising were it done well. How do you host a dance night in a museum, though, isn't there a danger of drunks puking on the art?
Does the Wag still happen? I thought that was one of the better ones too, though sadly ill-attended on the times I went (and nobody I know goes :( )
-
Bliss still happens on the backstage at the Cat (and sometimes the mainstage when there is a band)
The Hirshorn thing primarily happens outside around the fountain.
Wag is still going on as well.

I find it humorous that Gridskipper has a gripe with some of the dance nights having an elitist attitude yet in order to make a comment on their site you have to be approved in advance HAHA

Seriously, the gawker network sites have linked to my site at least a dozen times, have quoted me more than once, yet I'm still not approved to make comments.
