I was just thinking this when Daydream Believer was in a commercial this morning. Pleasent Valley Sunday, Shade of Grey, Not Your Stepping Stone were all solid.

I'm pretty sure I have a Minor Threat album with them covering that one.

Yes, you probably do.  Them and the Sex Pistols covered it.  I've got a version of a young Rollins singing it as well.

Stepping Stone was a staple for all the punk bands, Sex Pistols covered it even.

That's actually a cover song itself.  The great John Stewart wrote that particular Monkees song.

Wrong John Stewart.  He would be Jon Stewart....

Shrek and Donkey covered that one...."when I saw her face, now I'm a believer"

I'm not saying they 'should' be, but I thought the Smiths would've been covered much more than they are.

I like Paul Revere and the Raiders version of "Stepping Stone" which pre-dated the Monkee's version.

Not sure I'd like people doing Smiths covers, although if Kirsty MacCall were alive she would do a nice job on them.  Marti Jones could do a Smiths cover some serious justice.

Other artists which could be covered more often, The Pretenders, Big Star, Replacements, Green Day...

Great artists who should be covered more often:
 REM
 Sublime
 Gram Parsons
 John Fogerty
 Soundgarden
 David Bowie

I am always disappointed by Prince covers.
Great call on The Mats and Green Day.

Bowie would be very hard to cover as Bauhaus and Nirvana demonstrated.

Lulu did a good version of Man who sold the world though.

Then Lulu did a better job of that song than Rhett Miller did.

Jordis also covered that song on INXS:Rock Star.

ummmm, nirvana's bowie cover was part of one of the best live performances in history. I would probably give up every concert that I have ever seen to be at that show.

dunno about get up kids. they were never my bag.

Minor Threat was only the million and oneth punk band to cover "Stepping Stone."  By the time they got around to it, this essentially goofy song had been turned into an overly earnest punk protest song, to which overly earnest undersexed punks shook their fists in a million mosh pits across the US.

Another great song for punk covers is "Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," originally by the Standells.  Minor Threat did a good cover of that one, too.  In fact, if you believed Google you'd think Ian came up with those words about being a lovelorn working stiff himself.

"I Fought The Law" is one of the alltime best punk covers, albeit way played out.

Someday I'd like to hear someone do a scorch-ass version of "Rain," by The Cult.  I might have to do it myself if I'm ever in a band again.

good thing bands dont often sing near water: elctrocuted by touching mic (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9872514/)

heh... many many times have I made the mistake of touching guitar strings and mic at the same time, and received a horrifying electrical jolt due to polarity issues.

One time I saw a sound dude at the old 930 use one of those little continuity testers -- the things with two leads that light up if there's power -- to test if there was a circuit between instruments and mic stand.   That thing lit up like Rudolph's nose on Xmas eve.

hey does this explain why the Cars career ended after that video in which they were walking on water in a pool?

or was it just too much coke?

Usually it is the amp that is the problem.  Some of those old amps have a reverse-polarity switch that makes the chassis live with 120 volts.  Yep, touch the amp and you can see sparks.  The mics are all well grounded with that system so you have 120V into ground, pow!  Fortunately the human body is usually a pretty poor conductor, and the current path in the amp is usually pretty high impedance so few deaths other than Keith Relf (sp) have occurred.

I have used a volt meter to see if the guitar is dangerous, another technique is touch strings to the mic and listen for a loud pop.  Another reason to use a wireless system.

probably there's a tribute record out there for so many bands theses days... a songwriting friend of mine once said, that one of the best ways to learn how to write a great (pop) (rock) song is to listen to big star's 1st & 2nd record.

I was actually just thinking this weekend that some of the current crop of indie pop bands and performers would benefit from adding a Prefab Sprout cover to their sets.  Pretty much any of the songs from  Swoon and about half from Steve McQueen (Two Wheels Good), would work.  Paddy McAloon was a hell of a song-writer, and a lot of his output would benefit from having some of the strings and keyboards and production layers scrubbed off.

DAMN YOU!!! DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!     How could you insult a great band like Pre-Fab by suggesting some skinny crack head talenless teenager destroy such beautiful songs.

Here's one....after suffering through Fix You on the radio today, I realized it's not such a bad song after all, and sung by Charlotte Church would be absolutely beautiful. Chris Martin is fucking useless. I can't help but bring myself to wail like a cat with it's tail on fire when that song is playing, and I don't sound too different from Martin himself.

Yeah, I have a 1964 vibrolux with a reverse-polarity switch.  What was the point of this switch, anyway?  It seems to have something to do with cutting hum.  Do modern amps not zap you?
