Title: Ok who's snowed in?
Post by: wml7 on December 19, 2009, 09:50:42 am
There is like 16 inches of snow in front of my door and it's still coming down heavy.  I hope everyone got their xmas shopping done  ;D

We've apparently got over a foot here in Richmond. And yeah it's still coming down. We havent had a snow like this since at least 2004.

Today was the day I was supposed to move.  Thankfully we didn't hire movers...we just got friends to help, so canceling wasn't too bad.  So far, I think we've had about 6 inches in Alexandria, but it's still coming down like mad.

Now instead I'm playing in the snow with my dog and drinking to stay warm.  Not a bad trade off.

Easily. We walked over to Byrd park with a bunch of cardboard boxes and went "sledding" this morning. It was fun. Kinda weird crossing the bridge over Downtown Expressway and looking down and seeing absolutely no sign of a road.

I'm still deciding whether to drive from Richmond to California, MD this evening.  Not sure what the main roads and interstate look but that will be the deciding factor.  I woke up a few minutes ago and my kids had shoveled the front walk and a path all the way down the driveway to the street.  I think they had ulterior motives as in them wanting me to drive them to the country club where there is great sledding.

I think the main roads are passable but I know the backroads haven't been touched yet here in Cville and won't be until at least tomorrow.  Safe travels if you decide to venture out  ;D

I just noticed that the morning show at the club has been postponed.  I'm wondering now if tonight's show will be as well.  As far as the trip to MD goes, I've never been to that part of the state and I have no idea how much of it is on roads that have yet to be plowed.  Anyone here know the general area of California, MD and what to expect as far as driving there today?  I'll probably come up through DC take the beltway around and then down to my destination, unless there would be a better way.

What show is it??  I think all shows and what not would be canceled tonight

OK no word yet on the show in MD.  Its my friend's band (Bobaflex).  They are in Point Pleasant, WV so I am kind of wondering if they can ever make it out since I have heard rumors of over two feet of snow in WV.  Anyway, I think I am going to venture out for  a while and let the kids do some sledding.

Hope your friends stayed put, RatBastard, and you should too. Some VDOT guy said it took him 2 and a half hours to get from Georgia Ave. to Tyson's last night and he expects it will take him 4 hrs. to get back if he leaves now. Stay in and safe - basically they said only emer. routes are being plowed, and right now, even those aren't all plowed. Stuck here too, obviously, wondering if I should even try shoveling so I can spread out the load on my old back.

LOL that's the advantage of having kids of your own.  You can MAKE them shovel every square inch of your yard and street...

I wouldn't drive if you don't have to. It's not the snow as much as it is the copious quantity of douchebags who believe their Honda Accord is going to make it in 14 inches of snow. 123 at Tysons is a labyrinth of idiots standing outside of their two-wheeled drive cars. I overestimate my driving skills as much as the next guy, but if not for my ostentatious European SUV I would not be driving around today.

i'm not worried about my driving just the others around me.  And yes it's true if you don't have 4 wheel drive don't even bother going out, hell even if you have 4 wheel drive don't go out its like 25 inches of snow out there  :o

Damn I drive an Accord!  Actually I fear the douche bags who think that simply driving a 4WD makes them a better driver, one good enough to go out in the show.  If you don't have the skills to drive in the snow, no manner of vehicle will give it to you!  :)  If roads are not passable I don't go out.  If so I have no problem driving.

its not too bad in my neighborhood, well the main roads anyway, but everyone is staying in

we only have like maybe 9 inches in dc but everything is pretty much shut down, but then again the city shuts down with only 2 inches of snow so...

OK it seems to have stopped snowing in the west end of Richmond (Short Pump, Henrico County), but for my zip code NWS is calling for another 2-4 hours of snow later on this evening.  Oh well to hell with it, I'm going to take a shwoer and head out for a while.  That sledding trip is in the offing!

i stayed in dc overnight with the ladyfriend.  we woke up to about 8 inches near the capital.  against the condescending attitude of the hotel staff, we drove back to falls church around noon.  the roads are bad and dc is a ghost town.  we made it home safely but encountered plenty of assholes in SUVs.

stay safe, everyone!

My wife had to work for a few hours at the eerily empty Montgomery (Westfield) Mall in Bethesda this morning, and we were lucky to make it back home 3 miles away. I ended up in two snow piles: one trying to exit on River Rd and the other just outside of our apartment building. I couldn't even reach our parking spot.

It's atrocious out there, and I never say that since I grew up in North Dakota.

Took my son out to go sledding today.  We get to CCV and there is a big ass banner hanging up that says NO SLEDDING.  WTF?  Damn blue blood CC snobs!  Well we drove over to south side and hit Forrest Hill park.  Steven had a great time freezing his ass off and getting soaked in the snow.  We are all back home safe and sound now in front of the fire place watching a movie.

i was driving home very slowly and carefully on friday night around 3a, avoiding cars spinning out and SUVs being too aggressive.  i almost made it home.  on a street with a nice long slow curving hill, some lovely person had decided to clear three huge snow boulders from their driveway into the middle of the street.  i slowed to go around them (into the other lane) and lost all momentum.  couldn't regain traction, so i made it about another half block until i let my car slide to the side of the road and parked.

i will admit that it was a beautiful mile long walk home in the storm, but i realized when i got home that i had parked on a snow emergency route.  i'll most likely be returning to a ticket and maybe a towed car.  i honestly have no idea where my car is right now.

yesterday was all about relaxing.  video games, movies, good food.  today i will attempt to open my door and make with the shoveling.  i'm guessing i won't be able to venture out far enough to find my car before tomorrow.  as long as i'm out by tuesday morning to get tattooed, i'm fine with being a shut in for a couple of days.

I'm regretfully skipping the Scream show.  After shoveling all day, I still have to clear a path through the giant pile the plow created.  That ain't gonna happen at this hour.  I assume parking down there will be a nightmare as well.  Oh well...

i am the definition of snowed in.  we got 24 inches (roughly) where i am at.  i live in the country country mountains, which is the country version of the country . . . in the mountains.  my little gravel road which leads to another little gravel road which leads to the main road (which is a small, two lane paved path winding through the national forest) has been plowed by the locals a few times.  my driveway however, which is about 100 feet, is still under 24 inches.  my car is buried alive.  some melted today thank god, but i am not about to shovel when i can just eat chocolate covered cherries, play rpgs, listen to sirius, watch free porn, lay in bed all day and try to find more obscure bacon pictures.  i think i'll make the neighbors think i'm high on crack and go grill hamburgers outside tonight.  nothing like the taste of meat.

haha great post.  Yeah I was wondering what the hell do people do who have those long ass gravel driveways, like the people in the boonies.  I mean this was a huge snowfall you can't even drive over that stuff.

I wish I could find kids to shovel, but over the years I've never seen one of them pick up a shovel. ???
I found a guy to help me today and offered him $, but he turned it down and said "nope, we're neighbors."
:) Met a few other nice neighbors in the process too. I should have shoveled last night, when the snow was fresh. It was nice out then, actually, but when the snow was partial rain, I went in. Caught up on "30 Rock".
Saw plenty of passenger cars (Accords) get stuck today, and even a few SUVs and trucks. Many shoveled out their passenger cars, but not their SUVs?
Anyhow, carpooling tomorrow.

I had my son Steven go over to the elderly couple next door today to check on them.  We hadn't seen them since the snow.  He took the snow shovel over and did their porch, walk, and a path to the mail box for them.  When he was done the fellow came out and asked if he could do the whole driveway and Steven said yes.  The man gave Steven two $20s when he was done.  I think he knew Steven has had a really hard tiem finding work since he graduated HS back in June.

Scream show was awesome! Brought my own shovel and got an ideal parking spot a few hundred feet from the club. No biggie. The crowd fed off Pete's energy and went ballistic. I guess Scream is back together for real and this is not just a one-off. No Dave Grohl for this show.
