Muse.  That clinched it for me.  I'll be camping at Mecca beach.  Anyone else interested in joining me under the stars with the smell of dead fish wafting through the air?

I read it and wept tears of joy! Both of my wishes have come true. The 22-20s AND The Cooper Temple Clause. And the first chance to see Muse? Yow! Not to mention the rest of the list. This is definitely one for the books...

By the way, for those that can't wait for tickets, Radiohead's website has some available today: www.waste.uk.com (http://www.waste.uk.com)  I don't konw how many are there but they have 1 and 2 day tickets plus 2 days with camping.  Sorry if this was posted on the other Coachella thread...but reading through that entire thing scares me.

As Kosmo pointed out that there was no need for a second "the Darkness" thread, there is no need to sart a second Coachella thread.

Hometown Hero officially suck...How are they playing?

I think you answered your own question.  ;)

Ticketmaster is also doing a ticket presale today for the 2-day tickets and camping passes.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the Desert Sessions perform live...no matter who's up there, it should be a good show.

Very helpful to have a new thread announcing that the official lineup is out...I looked 'cuz it's new information and the old thread had wandered a lot.  THANKS Sonick.

I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice about getting tickets to Coachella.  Are they going onsale tomorrow at noon Eastern Standard Time?  Ticketmaster's website seems to say they are, but the Coachella website lists noon PST.  Any advice?

Also, does anyone know the password for the presale?  It looks like it might still be working.

Thelonious Monster is playing!?  Didn't that band die out in 1994 or something?

Just wondering what I'm missing here... Sparta in big bold print at the top of the day one list?  Above Rapture, Trail of Dead, Death Cab and Sterolab to name a few.  Is this a west coast thing, or did this group turn good on me.

Looks like a lot of people are heading to Indio this year...

 From the Coachella "Announcement" board:

Quote
Our best year ever!

Due to the popularity of this years festival, we have decided to make this announcement. Our concern is for the people who have already booked airfare or accommodations, but were planning on waiting to buy festival tickets at the box office. In previous years tickets have always been available at the box office on the day of the festival, however this year it is very possible that the festival will sell out in advance. We strongly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance to assure entry.

I just picked up my tix [ordered through w.a.s.t.e].

I thought about selling these right after getting back from SXSW.

I have made an amazing recovery though and am eager to do it again!

Yes, I also got my tickets in the mail this week  from w.a.s.t.e. I was very sorry to see, though, that the 22-20s are no long on the bill. (Instead, they are touring with Supergrass in the UK.) But! The Evens are on the bill now. I've been curious about Ian's new band... Also, I noticed that TV on the Radio will be in CA around May 1-2 and have a gap in their touring schedule. It would be fantastic if they were added at the last moment.

TVOTR would be a great add. I loved your review after the BC show. It perfectly summed up what I thought when I saw them the week before. I can only imagine how good they'd be playing around dusk on a warm evening out in the CA desert.

Just out of curiousity, what was the advantage of using WASTE to buy tickets other than the earlier sale date?

I've got camping reservations & a hotel booked. Not sure yet which way I'm gonna go, but I'm leaning toward camping. Would save a ton o' $$$$ and I think it would be a 'truer' festival experience. Then I could just pack up the camping gear & head over to Joshua Tree for a little festival recovery.

I always prefer camping.  If it's raining, just ask for an SUV when you get to the rental desk.  Then you can flip down the seats and sleep 2-3 folks in the back in cozy dryness.  (NOTE: I am vehemently against SUV's in the city, or for any non-camping, non-SUV needed use.  Please don't take this as an endorsement for those gas-guzzlers!)

I am staying in a Motel 6.  Not much better than an SUV or tent, but at least I'll have a shower.

I'm REALLY hoping that there's not going to be much chance of rain. I get enough of that right here.

 ***************************

RC - I missed the official Coachella pre-sale, so I used the w.a.s.t.e option to ensure that I could get tix (they also had a pre-sale that lasted longer). The lineup looked SO good that I thought it may sell quickly. I don't think there was any significant advantage (other than backstage passes to the band of your choice   ;)  )

This year's Music Midtown in Atlanta has the misfortune of happening the same weekend as Coachella...they are competing for the same bands. Not too hard to see who lost out:

 Journey, Puddle of Mudd, Fuel.

Philly was great...better than the Baltimore show because Greg wasn't feeling well for the Baltimore show, but he was feeling fine after a b-12 shot apparently before going on stage in Philly.  He was very talkative throughout the set, talking about Passion of the Christ (How'd you like that 45-minute ass-whippin'? Even Kunta
Kinte didn't get it that bad!), baseball (various stuff about the Phillies & Reds) and so on. It was great.

The setlist order was pretty similar to that of Baltimore's, but he threw in various lyrics, including a few lines from "Retarded" during a break in "Papillon" as a well as replacing a line from the chorus to "I'm a joker, I'm a smoker, I'm a midnight toker..." Additionally, they performed Strange Fruit  and Somethin' Hot (!!!) during the encore, which was different from B'more's set. Greg also sang a few lines from Purple Rain before going into "Faded" at the end of the set.

I'm pretty damn excited...should hopefully be a fun time, I am really looking forward to it. I'm usually not big on festival-type things, but I just can't say no to this. I'm really crossing my fingers that it will be a great time with few headaches. I just hope that the event is well organized and that traffic is not going to be a nightmare.

I almost went that day, but didn't want to deal with the Dave Matthews Band so I scalped my ticket. I had 2 friends come from out of town, so we bought scalped tickets for the second day (at 25 bucks a pop), which turned into a mega value for the next day. Pulp, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, the Beastie Boys, etc.  I was pretty glad that I bailed that first day, I was just bummed I didn't get to see Kraftwerk. Though in Indio I doubt they'll have a major thunderstorm!

From today's NME.com (http://www.nme.com/news/story.htm?ID=108294) CALIFORNIA DREAMING!

CALIFORNIAâ??s COACHELLA festival has become the hottest ticket on the web.

Ebay is now flooded with high-priced auctions for tickets to the May 1 and 2 event, which is sold out of tickets for the first night and weekend passes. The full event is expected to sell out within days.

On Thursday (April 22) a single ticket for Saturday May 1, headlined by Radiohead and the Pixies, sold for a whopping $405, almost six times its original value. Two weekend passes went for over $700, over twice their original value, and one pass is even listed for the ridiculous amount of $1 million dollars.

The demand is so high that some fans have decided to even auction off their pre-reserved hotel rooms and their places at the official camping sites.

the Radiohead curse isnt over maybe (http://www.nme.com/news/108314.htm)

 RADIOHEAD PULL SHOW

RADIOHEAD have cancelled their final Australian show at MELBOURNEâ??s ROD LAVER ARENA after lead singer THOM YORKE was diagnosed with a severe throat infection.

A joint statement released by promoters Michael Chugg Entertainment and Radioheadâ??s manager says Yorke developed a "significant loss of vocal quality" during the bandâ??s first Melbourne show on Monday (April 26) and was "barely able to finish the concert.".

At the show the previous night, the singer had apologised to the crowd, and said they had also considered pulling that gig.

The statement reads: "This morning he was attended by a Melbourne ear nose and throat specialist who diagnosed Thom with marked hoarseness of voice, a significant upper airway infection and associated heavy inflammation of his vocal chords. It was advised that if Thom was to sing in the next few days it could cause irreparable damage to his voice. Consequently and regrettably tonightâ??s concert had to be cancelled.

"Thom and the band would like to apologise to all of their fans, they are aware that people have travelled from all over the country for tonightâ??s show and would like everybody to know that this decision was not taken lightly.

"The band want to thank all of their Australian fans for their support at this time."

Promoter Michael Chugg told radio station Triple J that Yorke has been put on antibiotics to assist with his recovery in time for the bandâ??s appearance at the Coachella festival in California this coming weekend.

Radiohead had already completed two dates in Sydney last Friday and Saturday (April 23-24) as part of the final leg for the promotional tour in support of the release of last yearâ??s â??Hail To The Thiefâ??.

While there is no news as to whether the band will reschedule the show at a later date, fans have been advised they can receive a refund for tickets from point of purchase.

I don't care...as long as I get to see the Pixies, I'll be happy! But it looks like they're announcing the next batch of dates on their tour, and they're arenas. Looks probably like they'll end up doing the Patriot Center, which I am NOT happy about. I'm praying that IMP will put them up at Bender Arena instead for a few nights (hint hint Seth!!)  :)

That's a pretty good stretch of days in which to get well. Here's hoping for a full recovery. I'd be quite pleased with just a repeat of the show I saw this summer. I know they get slagged on this board a lot, but it really was pretty great: all the songs were transformed into something very different - a very energetic show - great Close Encounters-like wall of lights.

Here's a set-list from a recent show, before he got sick:

 setlist:
 01 there there
 02 2+2=5
 03 myxomatosis
 04 morning bell
 05 kid a
 06 my iron lung
 07 backdrifts
 08 pyramid song
 09 i might be wrong
 10 go to sleep
11 where i end and you begin
 12 you and whose army?
 13 climbing up the walls
 14 national anthem
 15 exit music
 14 paranoid android
 15 sit down. stand up

 Encore #1:
 16 planet telex
 17 sail to the moon
 18 idioteque
 19 how to dissappear completely

 Encore #2:
 20 karma police
21 everything in its right place

You can view them all @  atease (http://www.ateaseweb.com/) .

I'd love to hear Planet Telex! Last time I saw them play that was at the Black Cat in 1995. That show wasn't even sold out, LOL. Ah, what a difference 9 years makes.

And FYI, the Pixies are doing a "secret" Coachella warm-up gig after Moving Units play. It's somewhere in Pomona, but tickets are already sold out. My flight doesn't land until that evening, so I can't really go anyway. Sigh. There might even be other special guests, but the cover has been blown already and it's definitely the Pixies.

Dayum...that reminds me of the old PSA about not leaving your dog in a car with the windows up: "Hot enough to fry an egg? Hot enough to fry a dog's brain."

I think this will be a vacation where everyone comes back a few pounds lighter.

Beck! Day 1.  Check out the site map posted today... my only question for those that have been there before, are there limits to these "tents"... I know it's a tent, so I would think so.

the tents, from that i can remember are open air tents.  i seem to remember them not really have sides so much.  Day 1 should be packed though, so get there early for an act you want to see.

At $2 for a bottle of water?  that's a bit expensive, I mean warm.

 (visions of Woodstock riots...)

And the FAQ says no squirtguns... and no misting tents... I feel the love.

 sunblock, anyone?

So, I can only hope that the site map  (http://www.coachella.com/sitemap.html)is no indication of the timing on these bands... I'm not ready to decide between Belle & Sebastian and Bright Eyes...

Just for everyone goings FYI

also, i was told there would be drinking fountains there this year.

and last year, the water was cold, so whoever was talking about warm water is wierd.

plus, isnt water like $1.20 at 7-11 anyway? $2 is not much more.

I'm guessing the set times will be announced on the Coachella website today. Since the Times goes to print early, Goldenvoice probably released the info to the reporter ahead of time.

Just about 24 hours until I'm on my way to California...this workday can't go fast enough!

I made a little mix cd that is exactly like the recent Minneapolis setlist. It's so F'ing good! These songs sound SO great back-to-back. I still can't believe what they are playing. Usually you get stuck with a band coming out of 'retirement' and pimping a bunch of new inferior stuff - not this time. "Rock'n'roll is back again" - Indeed.

I also just pulled out a Cure EP I got a LONG time ago. It's the Pictures of You single (once upon a time I was obsessed with that song) - it's got other cool live versions of songs from Disintegration. Wouldn't it be great to hear Prayers for Rain after sunset and after enduring a 105 degree day?!

I've been in Palm Springs in May when it's 105 degrees...it's hot, but not as bad as RFK Stadium on an 85 degree day with 70% humidity. Trust me on this one. Bring some sun block, sun glasses, a hat, and drink water...it will be great! I see that The Desert Sessions are on at 6:30 on Sat., and I'll probably check them out a bit before I go over to see the Pixies. I have a feeling though I may have to skip them in order to get a good spot for the Pixies. I probably won't be arriving until 3:30 or so on Sat. I really can't wait to see Kraftwerk, too :-) woo-hoo!!!

Just got back into town after a weekend that I will probably never forget as long as I live. I wasn't quite sure what to expect about many things, but Coachella is bar none one of the coolest things I've ever done in my life. Obnoxious crowd? Negative. Long lines for dirty bathrooms? Nope. Hot as hell? Well...pretty toasty, but once the sun went down it was really pleasant.

So I got there Saturday in time to see Sparta. I wanted to see the Desert Sessions, but wisely I parked my ass at stage right and the sun went down around 7:15. Right around then I first saw Kim Deal and then it began to hit me...I was going to see my favorite band of ALL time. At that point, the anticipation could have sparked a desert wildfire...the band came out to a phenomnenal response. I had a feeling that the band knew damn well they were the highlight of the weekend...so they just went for it. I have never seen an audience so completely in awe of what was happening onstage. It was only an hour long, but the general consensus was a) the Pixies kicked ass and b) they were the best thing all weekend.

The funny thing to me is simply how much talent was on all those stages. The Pixies' music resonates so strongly today, but it shouldn't overshadow bands like Kraftwerk. Even Radiohead, who at first started off a little weak, recovered nicely and did a great job. Kraftwerk, however, was insanely awesome. Fantastic sound and visuals. Day two was far more mellow and it was obvious a lot of people overdid it on Saturday and didn't come on Sunday. The Cure were great, Basement Jaxx had a terrific energy level, and Air were amazing. I didn't think the Flaming Lips were as good as they could have been. Belle and Sebastian were technically very good, but unfortunately didn't pick a setlist that was really appropriate for the festival.

One thing I will say is that Coachella is a class A festival. Amazing food (I had dinner on both nights at the Indian place), plenty of water ($2 a bottle was very reasonable I thought), and the audience was amazing. This was no Woodstock 1999. Instead, this was a borderline Woodstock 1969...bands talking about kicking Dubya to the curb, people there to celebrate music and overall a mellow vibe of acceptance and courtesy. People talked, smiled, and overall one got the sense that the festival organizers did everything humanly possible to ensure that the patrons would be comfortable and have a great time. I witnessed few drunk people, no fights, nothing other than people behaving well and having a ball.

So that's my brief synopsis...I had 1 1/2 hours of sleep last night, slept 2 more hours on the plane, but I am listening to my Disclive Pixies recording. Amazing sound quality, phenomenal performance. This was one weekend I will never forget. For the musical geek like me, Coachella was heaven. If you read this far, thanks for humoring me  ;)   Anyone else go? Thoughts? I'd love to compare notes.

 xo,
 Bunnyman

glad somebody had a great time.  the heat about killed me.  i didn't even end up making it to the second day.  i thought the site was a bit small.. there was a lot of sound bleeding from stage to stage especially from the tent with the techno acts...
too much of the stuff that i wanted to see was at conflicting times.  i was very pissed off that it was so difficult to get into the kraftwerk tent after radiohead.

the heat was by far the worst thing for me.  i don't know what the actual high was, but on my way to the venue on saturday, some gas station we drove by at around 1230 or so had the temperature displayed as 105F.

right on about the bathrooms and water... the bathrooms weren't bad at all on saturday... and $2 is pretty reasonable compared to water at other shows.. i remember paying $4 for water in detroit (about the same size), having them take away the cap and then having some fucker kick my water over after i set it down when i got to my seat.

the heat was probably the biggest issue, though, for me.

i really enjoyed the pixies set.. and i spent most of the day wandering from tent to tent just checking stuff out.. the radiohead set was pretty disappointing.
i have some good pictures my girlfriend took during kraftwerk (she left radiohead early to make sure to get a good spot in the sahara tent)

I had a great time. Definitely thinking about returning in 2005, depending on the bands scheduled to perform. Yeah, it was hot, but it was only 2 days. We went overboard on Saturday and stayed for the entire day. After the parking lot situation that evening, we decided to show up later and leave earlier on Sunday.

 Favorite acts of the weekend:

 - Muse
 - Black Keys
 - Pixies
 - BRMC (for being gracious despite the tech difficulties during their set)

My sister and I snaked our way up to the WAY front for Kraftwerk, don't ask me how we did it, but it was great! My favorites were definitely:

 1) The Pixies
 2) Kraftwerk
 3) Air
 4) Basement Jaxx
 5) The Cure

I was disappointed with the Flaming Lips. Radiohead was OK...they got better as they went on. There was definitely a bit of sound bleeding from stage to stage, but if the band was loud enough you wouldn't hear anything. THat being said, I didn't even really need ear plugs for most of the bands. I think if I had gotten there really early on Sat., it would have made it more difficult for me to enjoy Sunday. It's tough to endure that heat all day long!

CRITIC'S NOTEBOOK (http://query.nytimes.com/mem/tnt.html?tntget=2004/05/04/arts/music/04FEST.html&tntemail0), The New York Times
A Festival for the Progenitors and Their Heirs From Today
 By JON PARELES

NDIO, Calif., May 3 â?? The new wave was the old school and the 1960's were rock prehistory at the fifth Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this weekend. It was a festival for collegiate music tastes in the post-era: post-punk and post-disco, with hip-hop represented by an underground so self-conscious it's almost meta-hip-hop. And it presented music of self-absorption, idealism and the urge to dance.

The sold-out event drew 50,000 people on Saturday and Sunday with 12 hours of music on four stages each day. While many bands are reaching back to find underexploited ideas from yesteryear, this year's festival booked 1970's and 1980's progenitors: the Cure (founded in 1976) on Sunday and the Pixies (founded in 1986) and Kraftwerk (founded in 1970) on Saturday alongside their latest heirs and emulators.

If outbreaks of promising collegiate rock were on a map, this year's festival would have a pin in most of them. There were representatives of punk-funk from New York (the Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, !!!, Le Tigre), elaborately pained emo from Omaha (Bright Eyes, Cursive), art-rock and dance-music hybrids from London (Radiohead, the Cooper Temple Clause, Dizzee Rascal, Basement Jaxx) and politically minded rappers from the San Francisco Bay Area (Hieroglyphics).

Even bands whose songs are generally devoted to private upheavals, like Cursive, made election-year statements. There was also protest dance music from Antibalas, the New York band that updates the Nigerian Afrobeat music of Fela Kuti.

Of course there were some duds. Muse, an English band, seeks to reconnect the art-rock of Radiohead with the melodrama and classical flourishes of progressive rock, a perfectly awful idea. The Flaming Lips made a brilliant entrance, as their leader Wayne Coyne bounced into the audience in an inflated plastic bubble, then proceeded to play a shopworn set with the old songs and animal costumes the band has been using for years.

The Cure is about to release its first album since 2000, titled "The Cure" (on the I Am label), and its Coachella set was the band's return to the concert circuit. Before the Cure played its headlining set on Sunday night, the band could have heard its repercussions throughout the festival.

There were the intimate and volatile regrets of Bright Eyes and Cursive. There were the gradual, swelling, thoroughly absorbing instrumental textures of Broken Social Scene from Toronto and Mogwai from Scotland. There were the yelping vocals and pulsating bass lines of the Rapture, Elefant and Stellastarr, all from New York. Of course none of them mixed method and obsession in precisely the same proportions as the Cure.

Robert Smith, the Cure's leader, has a pop songwriter's gift for distilling lovelorn sentiments into simple language and a voice that sounds as if it's just emerging from a crying jag. With his disheveled mop of hair he's the epitome of mope-rock, suffering from betrayed love and his own endlessly examined mistakes: emo bands learned a lot of their self-recrimination from him.

But Mr. Smith is equally fixated on musical patterns: short, layered phrases for guitar and keyboard. Circling and piling up, those little motifs turned into long instrumental introductions, as if Mr. Smith had to stew over his troubles before they'd finally burst forth into words. The band's set worked like one of its songs, starting out subdued and orderly and gradually making its way toward high drama. For encores Mr. Smith turned playful, scat-singing and playing slide-guitar meows for "The Love Cats." He had managed to plunge into misery yet emerge unscathed.

One of Coachella's four stages was devoted to disc jockeys, who generally pumped out the familiar, single-minded thump of house and trance music. But on smaller stages, a few disc jockeys tried more avant-garde notions. Prefuse 73, a group of disk jockeys and programmers, brought along a rhythm section for its dense collages.

Dangermouse, the producer and disc jockey who became nationally known for his illicit "Grey Album," which mixed Jay-Z's raps from "The Black Album" with unlicensed samples from "The Beatles" (otherwise known as the White Album), was on hand with a set of other, less contentious remixes of a cappella raps.

Somewhere in the background, for bands like Radiohead (Saturday's headliner), the Thrills, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Sleepy Jackson, were distant memories of the Beatles, the Byrds and the Velvet Underground. Belle and Sebastian's delicate pop obstinately resurrected scorned easy-listening styles of the 1960's; the French band Air hinted at Pink Floyd when it wasn't turning campy. But they were the exceptions. For most of the Coachella Festival, rock history began in the mid-1970's.

Wow.

 Wow wow wow.

Aside from the sunburn, dehydration, hunger, sleep depravation, dirt, sweat, and watching other people pass out from heat and get arrested for smoking pot or drinking underage...

 Wow.

Favorite show?  !!! is *amazing* live-- they're now on my not-to-be-missed show list.  I'm not a Basement Jaxx fan and don't really like their music, but the show was amazing.  Le Tigre was also *awesome* as always.  Sid Fontaine made me remember that I once liked trance.  Atmosphere made me love them.  Pretty Girls Make Graves rocked a mid-day crowd. The Pixies were great too, but their show was on such a different scale.

Disappointments?  Flaming Lips' 5-song set.  Death Cab, whose sound was lost in a mid-day outdoor show.

Would I go again?  I dunno.  The weekend is a blur, really, but a happy blur.

Chimbly, thanks for talking about the "non-headliner" bands; those are some of the bands I wanted to catch.  I'm also wondering about Ash, The Stills and Elefant...

Guess we won't hear abut Cooper Temple Clause until Kurosawa gets back...    ;)

I just got off an all night flight (spent yesterday enjoying the Venice Beach freak show)...and am in desparate need of sleep - 2 hrs Sat - 2 hrs Sun - & whatever I could scrounge on the plane last night/this morning.

Great feedback above. At a festival like this your perspective is influenced by so much more than only what's actually occurring on stage: e.g., the crowd; the heat; your energy level, etc. Two people could see the same thing & feel pretty differently about it.

All things considered, I'd rank my favorites as:

 Radiohead
From where I stood, it looked like one big sing-along dancing party; Thom Yorke was very happy & animated; The setlist selections were great; And an amazing light show that strangely complimented the beautiful natural setting:
The main stage setup @ and around sunset is almost too surreal & beautiful to describe with the mountain ranges silhouetted on all sides/backlit palm trees/spots pointing up to surround the area with an immense light triangle/ and a near-to-full moon.
This set was the defining moment of the festival for me & proved very tough to beat.
    <img src="http://www.thedesertsun.com/news/photos/20040502013328_bg16.jpg" alt=" - " />

 The Cure
I thought the Cure started a little weak and unsteady - It looked like Smith almost threw a fit early on when he had equipment problems, but he recovered very nicely and I thought they really hit their stride when they played Pictures of You. The new stuff sounded good - they pulled out some deep tracks & if you like the poppier side of the Cure, then you would have been pretty happy with the entire extended encore (+45 minutes over planned end time].
  <img src="http://www.thedesertsun.com/news/photos/20040503015848_bg3.jpg" alt=" - " />

 Pixies
I loved the Pixies. They were great. From my vantage pt however - stage left, sound board deep - I was a little disappointed with the crowd. I'm not sure how many people there were really Pixies fans or were just there to see this "important band". No one was singing or even barely moving. It hardly slowed me down, but all I could think about was how I wish I could see them in a small club or even fight to the front were I knew it must be crazy.
  <img src="http://www.thedesertsun.com/news/photos/20040502013328_bg14.jpg" alt=" - " />

 Kraftwerk
We stayed for the entire Radiohead gig & then shot over to the tent. Strangely we had little trouble getting in. I've never been a big fan (still probably not), but what a show. Especially for closing the first night. 4 guys (sometimes 4 robots) - each facing a P.C. on a skinny pedestal - with The Wall-like imagery being displayed behind them.
I've got friends who are much more into electronic music who are now swearing that this show was one of the best they have EVER seen.

 Air
At sunset in the setting described above. Could you set it up any better?! I could have used a feel more chilling moments like this.

 Cooper Temple Clause
I didn't get to see their entire set, but caught enough to realize this is a band I need to see again. I think they'd be ferocious in a smaller venue.

 Disappointments

 Flaming Lips
They started very late & I think it ruined their pacing. Wayne Coyne walking on the crowd in the "big bubble from outer space" was a great start, but it broke down pretty quickly after that. The crowd wasn't very receptive to his politicizing and they seemed to be trying to force all of their gimicks into a very short compressed set (<45 minutes). Or maybe this is just a band that you only need to see once.
  <img src="http://www.thedesertsun.com/news/photos/20040503015848_bg1.jpg" alt=" - " />

 Dizzee Rascal
So much hype & I couldn't have been more disppointed. We only lasted about 3 songs. You could barely make out anything he was saying which eliminates nearly all of the charm of his record.

 Some general comments:

I couldn't agree more about how cool the crowd was. Especially on Saturday. No doubt the best concert vibe I have been a part of. Sunday started to get a little HFStival-ish at times, but it's tough to level any criticism at all when most were so very well behaved.
   <img src="http://www.thedesertsun.com/news/photos/20040502013328_bg1.jpg" alt=" - " />

There was no line either day to get in when we arrived (@ 2:00-3:00 each day). I had read and been prepared for long long waits. The only things searched were bags. Not even a cursory body pat down. I'm actually surprised there were any drug related arrests at all. They sure weren't trying very hard. I can only imagine what you would have had to do to get arrested for a drug related charge since at every turn I either saw it or smelled it. Not a criticism, but rather a comment on the very tolerant vibe.

While VERY VERY hot, I didn't find it intolerable. They provided quite a few options for finding a bit of shade and for getting h2o. The shade however didn't help much in the music tents. I was sweating during the Black Keys set like I was sitting in a steam room.

Overall I think that the Coachella organizers have done a magnificent job of creating what has to be one of the greatest experiences a music lover could ever want. Once I recover & get some sleep I'm sure I will feel exactly like Bunnyman - that it truly was one of the best things I've done.

Seriously...At that point in the day, it was probably hotter inside the tent than it was outside. I remember walking out after the Black Keys set and saying, "Wow, it's cooled off out here!"

I agree on the Air performance being great and perfectly timed. The best part was the guy with the mohawk wearing a kilt in front of me getting his groove on to "Kelly Watch the Stars."

Bags - I saw Trail of Dead, Bright Eyes, The Stills, Death Cab for Cutie and few others like. My general comment is that it almost feels like you handicap these smaller bands when you throw them out on a large stage to festival size crowds. They typically feed off and play to the energy in much smaller venues. Often I think they haven't yet learned the adjustment. I have recently seen all of the mentioned above in an intimate club setting and none of their sets @ Coachella could compare.

Ash was sad.  That's all I can say.  They started their set to the about 40 fans who tore themselves away from the Cure.  The part of the set I saw was great-- really energetic, really rockin'.  By the end of the set the tent was about 3/4 full, but man, the festival forced folks to make some tough choices, you know?  Skonster caught elefant and said they were good, and that the lead singer is "dreamy."  I did my best, though, to catch as many bands as possible.  I have to agree that Bright Eyes was great too-- I was surprised how much happier he sounds sober and outdoors as compared to drunk in 9:30.

And the Stills?  Couldn't talk myself to missing other bands to see 'em since they're going to be in DC so soon!

Another highlight for me was running into Stuart Murdoch from Belle and Sebastian during Radiohead's set. Being the fanboy geek that I am I had to say hello to him...am glad that they at least played "Sleep the Clock Around", which I yelled out for and was surprised they played!

Anybody see any celebrity sightings? I got to see Christina Ricci, Adam Goldberg, and Alicia Silverstone. I heard Jack Black was there too.

ok, its time for my take.

Being the 2nd Coachella i have been to, things seemed to work rather well this year. You can tell whos been there all 5 years, much preparation is needed.

   Day 1

not much traffic and no lines to get in, we got in around 1:30pm.

    The Sounds
very cool. very energetic. the lead singer was quite entertaining and very Blondie-esque. telling the crowd "I'll be the best lover you've ever had baby!"

    Howie Day
uh, Goo Goo Dolls werent on the lineup were they?  my girlfriend likes him though.  nothing special.

    Stellastarr
god was it so hot in there and we saw about half of them and then went for a cooler land.

   Beck
yeah right.  he played in a tent that fit about 2000 people (maybe) and there was a good 7500 trying to get in.  I skipped it and it seemed he just played a mellow acoustic set anyway.

   Trail of Dead
trail of technical difficulties is what it sounded like from the beer garden. they worked through it though and sounded good.

    Death Cab For Cutie
Janitor costumes?  Beastie Boys? what?  i enjoyed them though for sure. i REALLY want to see them in a small venue now though.

    Sparta
played a VERY tight set. although they seemed a little nervous at first. they ripped through thier songs and probably won over a LOT of people (they played in front of about 20,000 waiting for the Pixies)

   Pixies
i dont know. it was just more amazing that they were there than how great they sounded. we got pretty close and no, grotty, the crowd was not too much crazier up there. i dont think many people knew too many of the words or anything. i think they were very very happy to be there.

   Radiohead
HOLY SHIT. enough said. this band has become a machine. they are the most complete rock band in the world today.  I cant say enough.  The set list was perfect for the festival.  not too much new stuff, and all of the high energy stuff. There There kicked it of into a trance and 2+2=5 sent everyone rocking. through Myxamatosis and Karma Police and I Might Be Wrong, the band was so on, and together. When they played Idioteque, if there had been a roof on Coachella, it would have blown off, and Thom seemed to push it as far as he could go, running back and forth on the stage, waving his arms around, urging the crowd to get crazier and crazier. Hearing Street Spririt for the first time ever live, was just the best and Planet Telex had a whole new twist to it.  ok, wait, let me stop.

   Electric Six
HAHA.  arent they just amusing. we walked by the tent right for "Danger! High Voltage" and that was cool.

    Kraftwerk
wow.  we saw the last 20 minutes or so and i wished i had seen more. those old guys showed up every DJ that played there that weekend!

Overall, Saturday was MUCH more crowded than last year and i found it harder to manuver around from stage to stage. The parking lot took us 3 hours to get out, and it was just insane. Mark the exits next time guys!

     ok, Sunday

Less people, hotter, no Radiohead.  and i was ALREADY tired.

got there around 1:30pm again and i was not sure how long i was going to stay.  but you know how that goes.

      Hybrid.
The DJs at this event seemed to only want to play remixes of rock songs. I was expecting more from Hybrid but the crowd was loving them

      Muse
GODDAMN!  they were the runners-up for the weekend.  although, it seems like the singer/guitarist pretty much IS the band.  But he is a damn genius.  i wish they would have played longer or at night.  i couldve watched them all day though.

      The Thrills
good band. i dont know, i was ready for more rocking out i guess after Muse, and i wasnt really feeling it.

      2 Many DJs
its just FUN. sorta DJ Z-trip ish.  rock songs, mixed with techno classics and other misc. crap.  very cool.  why do they never tour?

      Cooper Temple Clause
i was enjoying them immensly until my girlfriend said they sounded like Filter. and i agreed

      Adam Freeland
BOO!  a Beastie boys remix? an "Impeach Bush" flashing on the screen.  you are British Adam, what do you care? i left QUICKLY after that.

      Dizzee Rascal
the acapella freestyling he did was fucking great.  I couldnt understand shit when he talked and it seemed like they were a little out of sync.  he's only 19, but he was having a blast and so was the crowd. he may be around for a while.

      Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
we were in THE front row for this band.  And we were very excited to get all the way up and then.......hell broke loose.  I dont think they played one song without something screwing up.  2 basses died, the mics werent working, and finally "ok, so thanks for being patient, we're going to play Love Burns and then just get out of here"  i yelled "we still love you" but those poor guys.

      Flaming Lips
the bubble thing was awesome, but really. this aint Bonaroo.  they sucked. and werent on for more than 40 minutes.  i hope those people up front were happy.  and those animals are just lame.  sorry.

      Bassment Jaxx
suprise of the weekend.  goddamn people were hyped for that show.  everyone dancing, hands up, and i didnt know they were THAT popular!  we had the luck to be right next to 3 girls who stripped down to thier underwear to dance!!! "Where's Your Head At" was the highlight of Sunday night and gave me the second wind i needed to make it through the last 2 hours.

     Ash
not too many people hung around for Ash, but they missed some pretty good stuff. high energy enough, but maybe a little poppy.

    The Cure
i dont know. i was never a BIG Cure fan and the girlfriend wasnt either.  we watched for a while, and were kind of awed that it was them!! But after that wore off, they got old.

I was pretty sad all day yesterday. and I so cant wait for next year.  My girlfriend asked me if i had any complaints and i said. "other than that its over, no"

50,000 people who had spent all thier money to hear beautiful music, in a beautiful place, with people they love......pretty fuckin awesome.

when we were walking away from Radiohead over to Kraftwerk, we stopped and were looking at everyone walking in all directions and someone stopped next to me and said "look at this, all these people are happy"  and they were too.

that just took me a half hour to write.

Hmm...while my travel-buddy and I were waiting to get out of the parking lot on Saturday night, this Jack Black-looking guy walked by the car. I just thought it was some random guy who happened to look like him. I wonder if...

That Adam Sandler new album promotion machine was pretty lame...there were signs all along Monroe Street and that small plane with the banner flying overhead during the day.

Amen...people WERE happy. It helps when a festival is well-organized too...treat people like animals and they will act like it, but if you treat people well, there's going to be a radically different vibe. I agree about Basement Jaxx...Radiohead's set started off a little rought (sound-wise, esp. towards the back) but "Idioteque" was indeed AWESOME.

Was it me, or did Radiohead play about the same setlist as they did at Merriweather??

Also, gotta mention something nobody has yet-- the "light tent"

they had strobes all over pointing straight up that made it look like, no matter where in the place you were, you were under a big tent of lights.  it was super cool.

Actually, there were some big differences from Merriweather...at Coachella they played "My Iron Lung", "Karma Police", "Street Spirit", "Lucky" and "Exit Music", none of which were played at Merriweather. Oh, and "Planet Telex" too.

Any Radiohead song post-The Bends is pretty much interchangeable anyway.

Time for the old guy who only went to Saturday's show with the intention of seeing the Pixies really.

I'm way too old for this shit.  I'm shocked I even used to enjoy it. And it was way too hot.  Say what you want about a dry heat, but 100+ is 100+ no matter what.

I agree that the Pixies were fantastic (I thought they were better then Radiohead, but I'm in the mminority - I also knew all the words so again, I was in the minority).  What you saw was history and if you thought for as long as I did that you may never get to see it, well then you appreciated it that much more.  I will pay any scalper any price to see them again at the Greek.  Nearly 2 dozen songs in about an hour.  I can't wait until they have the whole place to themselves and less people who aren't Pixies fans.  And fewer Radiohead fans would be nice too. 10+ years in hiatus and still one of the best and most influential bands of all time.

I'm not the biggest Radiohead fan, but I did enjoy the show.  And they played a lot of older Radiohead songs so the surprisingly had some rythyms and melodies.  But for anyone to tell me that they were better than one of their prime influences, well you missed something.

The big stages left me longing for the Clubs, especially for Death Cab, but I thought they sounded better then when I saw them early in the tour.  Sparta were good, but agian I preferred them at the Black Cat with Markie bouncing around.

The DJs were all pretty good I thought, but yes, Kraftwork tore it up.  They proved once again that they are the masters.

The crowd was civil, mostly because the music precipitated civil crowds.  There wasn't that one or two bands that would bring the HFS nonsense.

Everytime I say I'll never do it again, but i they keep bringing bands that I think I'll never see again out of the woodwork, then I shall keep returning.

Here's to looking for The Smiths in 2005.  And I'll have to drag my sorry ass back out there.

Smackie, I think I'm in your camp in terms of not being able to imagine I'd still enjoy a fest like this in temps over 100, but I may be selling myself short.  I still love Jazzfest in New Orleans, but I'm there for the vibe, not to see bands I love (and I avoid the big headliners, as the crowds for those are insane and it's just Cowboy Mouth/Buffet/Paul Simon/Dave Matthews).  Plus after a day at the fest we have good dinners at some of NO's finer restaurants and hang in air-conditioned bars.

But, I may need to look into this next year....there are decent hotels you can stay nearby, right?  And the parking lot situation sounds a lot like Nissan....    :p

They proved once again that they are the masters.

tons of hotels.  its a resort town, so you have your Motel 6's or your nice resort golf course hotels.
and the traffic situation was fine on Sunday night. whatever happened on Sat night was fixed quite happily.

It didn't take us long at all to get out of the parking lot...I think the first night was a good 40 minutes, but the second night was half that. All things considered, it could have been much worse (like 3 hours).

We camped on-site for a total cost of $25 per person for all three nights.

We also got a total of 7 hours of sleep.

But it was great-- no driving, and the party just didn't stop.

the funny thing on Sat night was that people could NOT find thier cars.  thier was no clear exit to the lot (field) so by the time we left at 12:10am, cars were in long lines to and end of the lot that had no exit. people just had thier cars off in line to leave!!! we just sat in the car til about 3am, drinking.  and finally at 3am the guys who drove the car parked next to us come running to the car and hug it.  poor kids looked or almost 4 hours for thier car, lol.  i really wish i had a camera in that lot.  there was a car facing every way possible!

From what Smackette said, it had to be better then the Flaming Lips and The Cure.

The partying was outstanding, the set-up was very nice and I had a blast.  It was damn hot though.  I would spend about 20 laps on the roof of the motorhome and then about 20 minutes inside the motorhome watching it on TV.  I couldn't imagine being in the stands for the whole race.  I felt that Gordon was just teasing the field for most of the race, but there was a lot of passing and the atmosphere was fantastic.  I hoped that Jr. or Tony would have been a bit more competitive because I could only imagine what the crowd would have been like had there been much competition from another popular driver, but Labonte almost made it competitive.

All in all a good time and I would definetly go again, but just hope that it's not in triple digits on the thermometer.  I'm looking forward to nice, breezy Sears Point next month.

I have no past Coachella's to compare it to, but it was a nice weekend.  Skimming through the other posts leaves me with little to add.  Upfront: Radiohead is probably my favorite band and the wifey and I left after Iron Lung.  Thom's voice up to that point was horrific.  I picked the first five songs, so I didn't see much reason to remain to hear a set list almost exactly like I've heard twice in the past year.  Since we left early the exiting was a breeze, but I couldn't believe the number of cars in a place with few exits... I can only imagine what it must have been like to leave after RH or Kraftwerk.  Pixies were tremendous and Stellastar was my surprise highlight.  Rapture was amazing as well.  I'd do it again, but I'll never be young enough to make it two days in a row... Hit Sunset Blvd. and Venice beach on Sunday and kicked back.

Well, I, too, had an incredible time at the fest. I've never been to a festival that was filled with such a positive energy. People were polite, friendly and genuinely excited about the music. I saw bands that can barely fill the 9:30 Club play superb sets to rapturous crowds of thousands. What a cool thing. How many festivals can you go to and see people wearing Spoon, The Fire Theft and Modest Mouse t-shirts? A great sense of community which was in full force during the Pixies set. And what a beautiful location!

 As for the music...

 Saturday:
Dios - Quite frankly, I was bored. I wandered over to another tent after only a couple of songs.

The Evens - Low key and with some terrific Ian moments. His comment of the day "Fuck the volume. Just listen harder." was funny. Some songs were better than others.

Q and Not U - They tore it up!!  We had planned to only stay for a couple of songs (while recovering in the shade of the tent), but the set was so good that we stayed for it all. Huge energy on stage, crowd responded in kind. A highlight of the weekend, really. I had forgotten just how exciting they are.

Junior Senior - Hilarious and fun as always. Guest appearances by Fred of the B-52s and that annoying Har Mar Superstar (why in the hell is he still around??).

Death Cab -I only caught half the set while standing in line for food. Felt as if it was drowned out by the surroundings but still pleasant.

Black Keys -Wow were they good!  I wish I could have stayed for the whole set. I definitely want to see them again soon.

Sparta - Good but shakey before The Pixies. Better in a club, I think.

The Pixies - Incredible. I looked around and everyone was just grinning and hopping up and down. Amazing to hear the songs and realize that this band is just as exciting and relevant as when the albums first came out.

Radiohead - This band blows my mind every time I see them, so I loved their set. Nation Anthem was my favorite moment, I think.

 Sunday:

Supernatural - Some great freestyle rap.

Pretty Girls Make Graves - Fine but didn't grab me as I thought they would.

!!! - Hilarious and with lots of energy. I will definitely try to see them again. If only to see the dancing on stage!  Profane and entertaining words from the lead singer.

Elefant - Arrived with swagger and entertained me as I thought they would. Not my favorite band in terms of the tunes, but I like their presence on stage.

Muse - I really wanted to love them but found my mind drifting during the set. Matt Bellamy is an incredible musician -esp. on the piano- but the songs started to sound similar.

The Cooper Temple Clause - This is one of my favorite bands so of course I loved their set. They had a lot of technical difficulties with Tom's syths and loops but they pulled it off despite those glitches. Ben was as ferocious as ever. And the others seemed especially full on, too.

Bright Eyes - They opened with my favorite Bright Eyes song. I don't think it was their best show, but I still enjoyed it. The last song was beautiful.

BRMC - Those poor guys. Major technical difficulties.  Talk about making the best of the situation. The frustrating thing was that when they were able to play an entire song, it sounded incredible. But I think they were only able to play 3 full songs. The rest were acoustic (a treat!) or partial.

The Flaming Lips -I'd never seen them before and walked up just when it started with Wayne in the plastic bubble. I thought it was funny but the songs still don't grab me. What a spectacle, though.

The Cure - Great to finally see them. We were only able to stay for half the set before having to speed back to LA. But I enjoyed that half.

And yes, it was horribly hot. I had one point on each day where I thought, "Oh god. I'm not sure I can take this heat." Then right after that, I went into one of the tents and recovered. But I drank a total of 17 bottles of water/Gatorade/fruit smoothies over the course of the weekend.

My star sightings...  Maura Tierney - Abby on ER; Amber Tamblin -Joan from Joan of Arcadia; Jeff Balis -the producer on Project Greenlight.  And biggest of all!  Owen Wilson was on my plane flying home!!  Ah, I love him. He was so nice and signed some autographs for kids.

Walked out of that set after a couple of songs...so boring. The best part was Flea playing trumpet for all of 10 seconds.

Are these people stars? Other than Owen Wilson, I have never heard of any of them. You sure have a good eye.

You kidding me?  One in five women there were Paris wanna-be/look-alikes.  It was like a bad where's waldo, and picking out the real one would have been impossible!  (Personally, I think she wouldn't have appreciated the dust/sun/etc)

Then there must have been a whole boat-load of butt-ugly women there.  I prefer stupid low-class women who have numerous surgical alterations too!  They really put the 'eel' in real.
