why don't you try writing your code correctly before you attempt a "scathing" review such as this...
also, I think the word is "doppleganger"...with two Gs

I think it is time for you to change your screen name to Serverin von Kusiemski.

A good one at that. I laughed, but then, I have a sense of humor (though it would've been more poignant if it had been posted prior to x-mas. Oh well).

Yep! Definately two 'G's in there.

It's always interesting to read the work of critics who - instead of knowledgeably and intellectually addressing the WORK of artists, have to attack their appearance/lifestyle/family members.
It's interesting because one sees how some writers abuse of their journalistic power. It should remind those of us who still read that even the best written material can be inaccurate and incomplete - and incredibly flawed by the writer's biases/agenda and ego. Hopefully, it's a predictor of THEIR eventual success (read: lack thereof). One can only assume the author is envious of Rhett's accomplishments/relationships/lifestyle.

Celeste, for someone who insists so heartily that Big Yawn is a joke, you seem to spend an awful lot of time reading it.
Turn the page, click away, turn off the computer, whatever it takes. I'm sure you made Big Yawn's day by objecting to this review.
-
Maybe she needs a good laugh once in awhile. It's like going to see a band that you know is going to be a train wreck. Or watching the intial rounds of American Idol.
Seriously, she only read the review because I pointed it out. And I only saw the review because I was looking for the bigyawn tv listings. Nice to see bigyawn reviewing an album 6 months after its release. Real timely.

Fret not, I do neither of those things. But I imagine some people on this board do. Not that I'm knocking them for doing it.

Oh yes, that is bad.
I am not terribly familiar with boyracer, but the bad score from the not so good reviewer made me certain I would like it. The reviewer makes them sound like McLusky, which isn't so far off the mark, is it? Pollard?

the fucking idiot who reviewed it could have at least done some research and realized that the "kid" who is boyracer -- stewart anderson -- is just three years his junior at 33 years old.
boyracer doesn't sound like mclusky. it's really jagged, wiry (and wire-y) indie-pop. haven't heard the new one, but any of their releases on slumberland or sarah are well worth checking out.
-
I didn't find the boyracer review bad. As an explanation of why someone doesn't like the album, I think it's quite clear and specific as to the reasons for a low rating.
Don't folks complain when every album is well-reviewed? As long as you understand WHY a reviewer doesn't like a band, it can explain as much about the music as a reviewer wo does like the band. Hell, that's sometimes when I think, "aha, this sounds like that old school power pop I'm gonna love but isn't cool right now."

I do have to hand it to BigYawn for uniqueness...
they are the only publication in the country to name either Jesse Malin or Tegan and Sara higher than Drive By TRuckers on their year end list. Hell, they had them both higher!
-
the ONLY one, eh
thats quite a painstaking little research project you undertook there Rhett - maybe you have a little too much time on your hands?
so how many year end lists did you compare against? 5, 10?

did your website have DBT higher?
oh, whats that? you dont have a fucking website.
then shut up, cry baby. :)
-
At least 10. I wouldn't call it a research project. I simply like "best of lists."
Tegan and Sara? Jesse Malin? C'mon. Gezus Friggin Criste. If you can find a list with either of those higher than the Drive By Truckers, please show it to me. I dare you to find evidence to refute BigYawn's uniqueness.

Yes, but he has Kasey Chambers #1 and Steve Earle #3. Those were probably the two worst albums I heard in all of 2004.
Oh well. I'm sure that 90%+ have it the other way around

Big Yawn did like the DBT record...a lot:
http://www.bigyawn.net/cdreview.php?id=148 (http://www.bigyawn.net/cdreview.php?id=148)
Actually gave it 8.9 Z's. That = Exceptional.
The disparity on the Year End Best Of is due to the diversity of individual likes and dislikes.
Maybe Redsock could/should post the individual lists also? Then you could consider lists that actually better align with your tastes...versus the composite.

Well you would think that list sucked because it's No Depression music.

I guess her point was that as a fan of Americana, she saw several true clunkers on that list, and several glaring omissions. Whatever.

oh yes, I did "take the time" to do this very important thing of making a top ten list, actually...and Rhett got it right...anyone who would include Kasey Chambers and Steve Earle's latest on their top list pretty much invalidates the credulity of their opinions right there
-
Is this supposed to be a self-portrait with Rhett?
<img src="http://www.gretchenpowers.com/2004art/images/us.jpg" alt=" - " />

That painting looks more grunge then americana. Was it on a top 10 list?
-
In 1994.
Wow this lame thread Part Deux continues to a page 2? Like others have said, if it bothers you so much, move along to another site. Pitchfork for your reviews (I guess -- I personally don't read the site) and www.rockontv.com (http://www.rockontv.com) for your TV listings.
<img src="http://www.rcowen.com/RCObkimg/News%20I/On%20the%20Move.jpg" alt=" - " />
Move on. Nothing to see here folks.

did anyone ever tell you that opinions cannot be right or wrong? and as far as being credulous...how can you say that?
personally, i think putting ANY alt-country slop on a best of list questions your ability to hear altogether. get yer ears checked woman!

Originally posted by sonickteam2:

And that would be wrong.... Opinions can be wrong. How about, it is my opinion that there was no evolution and that there is no second law of thermodynamics.
-
Originally posted by Forumie Partie Markie:

thats not an opinion markie. because there are facts to prove it wrong.
there are no facts on what album is better, unless you are doing it by sales.
if your opinion was "we evolved from monkeys" thats fine, but there is no proof either way.

Facts are simple and facts are straight
Facts are lazy and facts are late
Facts all come with points of view
Facts donā??t do what I want them to
Facts just twist the truth around
Facts are living turned inside out
Facts are getting the best of them
Facts are nothing on the face of things
Facts donā??t stain the furniture
Facts go out and slam the door
Facts are written all over your face
Facts continue to change their shape
