Title: CYHSY Oversold 2 RNR Gigs
Post by: Julian, Alleged Computer F**kface on October 02, 2007, 09:03:00 pm
Band didn't tell the venue about their fan club presale for the two shows. Then the club sold right up to the fire code limit and so a bunch of people got emails this morning telling them their willcall orders are canceled. Why isn't there any outrage over this? This seems like the kind of thing we'd go crazy about.

RnR Hotel has enough going against it without them pulling crap like that.

From DCist:
  http://dcist.com/2007/10/01/clap_your_hands_1.php (http://dcist.com/2007/10/01/clap_your_hands_1.php)

CYHSY @ Rock and Roll Hotel Oversold
Okay, so we've already given Brooklyn's Clap Your Hands Say Yeah a less than stellar live review and sufficiently curbed our enthusiasm when they announced two November dates at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Fortunately for the band, our lukewarm opinions hardly affected their ticket sales, as both dates have been sold out for weeks.

Unfortunately for fans of the band (including some DCist staffers), the dates were so popular that both were actually oversold, forcing Rock and Roll Hotel to refund ticket buyers from both shows. Rock and Roll Hotel says that failure to count in ticket sales from the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah fan club is the reason for the oversell. An e-mail to the refunded ticket buyers states, "Please understand that Ticket Alternative is no way shape or form responsible for this error. We at the Rock and Roll Hotel take full responsibility...Rock and Roll Hotel asks that you please do not try to contact the band with this matter, as we hope that you understand that mistakes can be made even in the world of Rock and Roll."

We've also heard through the grapevine some whispers that a few other recent sold-out shows at the venue were also oversold -- but reps for the Hotel say that those rumors are untrue, citing last night's Okkervil River show as an example of a show that may have been slightly more packed due to a larger press list, but definitely not oversold.

The Rock and Roll Hotel is offering a free pair of tickets to another future show for those who purchased tickets for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and have now been denied them. The venue is also making an attempt to schedule a third show that weekend with CYHSY. Both the venue and our site will let you know if that actually comes to pass.

Location didn't seem to stop them from selling out those two shows.

I found it very easy to access from 395. Probably easier to get to than the 9:30 Club, and the 9:30 Club is doing ok.

I find it easy to get to too, but I have a car.

I think the problem I hear about the most is that it is unaccessable to most public transit - metro (even though I've walked both to and from the RNR to Union Station) and it is difficult to catch a cab after the show (which I have no experience with).

I've heard the shuttle service is spotty as well, but again, no experience with that.

I really like it for shows and the upstairs bar is fantastic, but if it has anything going against it, I'm guesssing it is that.

The location is fine. You can take a metro bus from chinatown or easily find street parking.

I'm surprised that there is a CYHSY fan club.

Well, no one in the city likes the booker, and me thinks is directly responsible for some of the over-selling issues.

Man, I hope we get to over-sell for the Festival...

The owner of the RNR is not on this message board so your complaints would be falling on deaf ears...

And for the record, Smackette saw CYHSY while I was out with the Director and said that they are absolutely hit-or-miss throughout the entire show.  Some songs great, other songs just awful.  There was little in between.

I think that's an unfair generalization.  Steve has always treated my band very, very well.

I have run hot and cold with him, but your comments are some of the first I've heard on that end of the spectrum. I've had bands -- plural -- tell me they will never play one of those venues again, because of him. Don't know why this is, but  this is what I hear from folks.

Minus one occasion right after they had opened, our experience with everybody at the Rock and Roll Hotel has been nothing but positive, from the evening managers to the booking agent to the bar staff to the sound engineers.

Steve has always offered us great shows, and been understanding and respectful when we've been unable to play.  I obviously can't speak to anybody else's experience, but Steve has treated us very well.

...Because the denizens of 930.com have always been noted for not using this bboard as a place to bitch about everything! Never has this place been flooded with complaints about DCist, Pitchfork, the Washington Post, Bigyawn, etc, etc, etc.

Discussing an issue about a local venue is as on-topic as anything else we discuss.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE!

We are happy to announce that a 3rd show with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah has been added for Monday November 19th at the Rock and Roll Hotel.  They will be supported by Montreal's Malajube on the date.  The 100 fans whose tickets were being refunded due to an oversell mistake by the Rock and Roll Hotel will have the first opportunity to get tickets for the 3rd show.  A public on-sale date is set for Friday October 12 at 10am.  Tickets previously bought for the headlining Malajube date on November 19th will be honored on this date as well.  The Rock and Roll Hotel is very excited to have the great opportunity to host such an amazing band for 3 straight nights.

 Thanks! - Steve

We've never had any problems with him either, or any of the staff at The Hotel.

Actually I fwded this convo to them.

I saw CYHSY when they first came to The Cat, I was pretty excited about the debut at the time and cut them some slack since it was one of their first shows and had a good time.  Second time when I saw them at Virgin Fest it was simply horrible.

Just chiming in to add that after two shows at RnRH nothing but great things to say about the staff, sound, etc.

Dealt with two separate sets of managers, security guys, bartenders etc. (with Daniel the one constant between the two shows) and without exception everyone we dealt with was outstanding -- helpful, friendly, responsive to all needs to the point of anticipating even little things in advance. They could not have been nicer.

I agree the neighborhood is a little seedy and that combined with the lack of public transportation nearby kept the band from bringing in more fans, but other than that, all As.

I'm not trying to trash RnR, I think they run a great ship over there. Lord know I'm not gonna bite the hands that feed me. But what I've heard tends to be pretty critical of Steve, that's all.

i'm not going to say much because i can easily start a pissing match i don't want to get into, but redsock is absolutely correct. as someone who books in town, i have to deal with many of the same bands that lambert does, and many have expressed disgust and frustration in dealing with him. some of the things he's said to bands -- and that i have seen in forwarded emails -- is embarrassingly laughable. and this is from some well-known dc acts that actually have draw, not just angry unknown bands looking for any gig. if you haven't noticed it by now, you will soon notice certain local bands that never play dc9/red and black/rock and roll hotel.

i used to book/work there, and there are many reasons why i quit. i'd rather work for a small, honest dive like the velvet lounge where the quality of music is more important than making an assload of money.

for certain music fans, dc seems to be thriving and fertile these days. for others, especially musicians, it's like ramming your face against a brick wall repeatedly. alternative spaces will be the new revolution...

There isn't any outrage because they're a band of the week that is basically awful now and will be defunct in about two years.
