And REALLY aren't The Arcade Fire the US version of Radiohead?

Arcade Fire post cryptic online message

Something is happening on October 6

Arcade Fire have posted a cryptic message online.

On their Neon Bible site vistors click on a closed eye to see it opening and revealing a message.

The message says: "Be oNline B October 6th".

Clicking on the message, visitors are sent to Beonlineb.com.

The website features pictures of closed eyes and the words: "October 6th" repeated 11 times.

I'm thinking it's their new album!  And you can pay whatever you want to download it!  Or you can order a special boxed version available in December!

either that or it's a Régine Chassagne sex tape.

they are. clearly he's a huge AF fan.

Brian only keeps close tabs on the nationalities of "good" bands... like Fall Out Boy, Ciara, Panic! at the Disco...

				Not just Canadian, FRENCH-Canadian. Mondieu.

my money is on this being a simulcast of the show at Keyspan Park, as you have to be online on October 6 according to instructions...

Win Butler is from Texas and he went to boarding school at Exeter.  He's more George W. Bush than he is French Canadian.

That's his origin, but I think the rest of the band is from Montreal. And they're based there. Aren't there like 8 people in the band?

Win's brother is also in the band and...as a result, also from Texas.

I don't know anything concrete. I just know that *if* there was going to be anything, it would be at the 500-capacity Music Hall of Williamsburg and that you would need your ticket stub from Randall's Island to get in, and that doors would be at 1am.

until arcade fire drop their label and go truly indie (i.e. release a free album online), they will be continuously upstaged by radiohead.

			-
Yeah...they still need to release their "OK Computer", then they can do that.

So Radiohead has been continuously upstaged by the Smashing Pumpkins for the last 7 years?

Umm dude...the "free album" will be released in traditional CD format in December by Parlophone (UK) and Capitol Records (US). Capitol Records is NOT indie  :)

The issue has nothing to do with whether people like SP or Radiohead. If someone wants to go Radiohead >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> SP, fine, that's an opinion. But to act like what Radiohead is doing is unprecedented is clearly erroneous. I can name easily ten other musical acts that released albums for free online before Radiohead did it.

Just waking up are we, it's always been advertised as such, why would you assume anything would be at Keyspan, especially in October?  Keyspan has only had a handful of shows over the last few years, but once you get settled up there that will become apparent  :p

Are you bitchin because of the transpo plan you'll have to put into effect?  RI is kind of a pain if you're going with public transpo, you can either take the ferry or a train up to 125th and jump on the buses that run continuously. The problem is on the return trip on the bus, which is always a clusterphuck, going the ferry route is a little more but will save some aggravation after the show.

scroll up and read on - you are among those who didn't blink when people talked about keyspan.  in fact, you awarded someone a bell for that statement      :)       that was my point, everyone was "oh, simulcast from keyspan!" - when keyspan was never in the books... but maybe i misunderstand, wouldn't be the first time.

thanks for the insight about the ferry, will definitely take that alternative.  i'm already loathing the trip back.  the show isn't sold out yet, hopefully it won't be quite as bad as after rock the bells.

Damn, you got me, didn't even "key" in on that, I knew about the simulcast, but glazed over the erroneous location.  Apologies.

for those who will be at home watching the simulcast, do keep an eye out for me as i'll be at the show.  i should be easy to spot: look for the tallest mofo in the crowd.  i'll be about 2 feet behind him.

but Radiohead is clearly the BEST band to do it, so they get the credit.

just like many other bands were annoying whiners before Smashing Pumpkins....

I suppose if you want to live in a world devoid of facts but overflowing with hyperbole, then go ah--- oh, wait, I forgot: it's Sonick I'm talking to. You've been the Mayor of Ballyhoo-ville for years.

by chance, does anyone have any set time information about tomorrow's show at randalls island?  when does the first band go on?

does randalls island have a curfew, a time by which the show must end?  doesn't look like it's a residential area...

 Blonde Redhead: 6:50pm

That's what I was thinking...

what a beautiful night to be outdoors listening to music, and what great music that was to listen to.

got there in time to catch most of blond redhead's set.  enjoyed it a lot more than i thought i would, their music sounded great on the big PA.  some of their stuff was really trippy.  admittedly they only had half my attention most of the time, as i was busy eating, drinking, finding a good spot on the floor, etc.

LCD were in fine form, james murphy seemed to have more love for NYC than the crowd had for him (which was in fact a lot, mind you).  they trotted out various members of AF to play along - the butler brothers on "north american scum", regine on "someone", and richard parry on "new york i love you".  james' ad libs on that last one were pretty funny.  i still preferred their show at the 930 (natch) but this was damn solid.  much much better than their coachella performance.

what to say about arcade fire?  they deliver.  highlight for me was definitely "my body is a cage" - sent shivers up and down my spine.  regine played drums for a couple of songs, don't remember ever seeing her do that before.  win implied that 25,000 people were at the show, certainly didn't feel like it.  he also tossed out that they wouldn't be playing NYC for the next couple of years - i hope i misunderstood this.  i had a great spot: dead center, about a third of the way between the stage and soundboard, even got a small boost by standing on the cable-protector thing.  sound was really good, great line of sight.

a great night out.  a few lame cam-phone pix  here. (http://picasaweb.google.com/sweetcell/ArcadeFireLCDSoundsystemRandallSIsland)  i'd expect a boot of this show to appear online at some point.  if/when it does, please let me know       :)

i ended up driving to randall's, and drove right on out after the show.  i feared having to spend an hour getting out of the parking lot, instead i was off the island in less than 5 minutes.  a very welcome surprise.

			-
But you missed Les Savy Fav.  Which means you missed the best performance.

			-
I can't believe sweetcell missed Les Savy Fav??

les savy fav?  puh-lease.  those blogosphere-driven hacks are entirely over-rated.  they are this year's CYHSY.

FYI, a band being from one place doesn't preclude its members from being from somewhere else.

LOL, you act like Les Savy Fav just appeared and got popular this year. They were this big before CYHSY existed.

			-
hopefully you clued in to my degree of seriousness - as in, not at all.

i found it absurd that two people who weren't at the show, who didn't see LSF nor anyone else perform, *knew* who put on the best show that day.  very talented people on this bboard!

That's par for the course on 930.com, actually.

I have already seen all those bands...didn't need to be there on Saturday to know who was the best.

			-
was I the only one who thought the sound for the Arcade Fire was abysmal, especially compared to how awesome LCD Soundsystem came across?

			-
callat - dang, wish i had known you were in attendance, would have loved to buy you a drank.

no, i didn't notice that AF sounded that much worse than LCD.  in fact, given the complexity of their sound i thought they sounded particularly good.  definitely a notch up from coachella.  where were you located?  from where i was (dead center, a little forward of mid-way between stage and soundboard), i thought the mix was damn good.

might be getting too dorky here, but it seemed to me there were primary instruments in the mix (drums, one or two guitar, bass, lead vocals) and secondary (strings, percs, keys, backing vocals, etc).  the primaries were kept well forward, while the secondaries were constantly jostling for position.  given the constraints of mixing that many instruments on a PA that big, i thought the mix was more than decent.

thing that annoyed me the most about the show: regine mouthing all the words with way too much feeling, essentially over-acting them.  she marched around the stage like mick jagger, getting in the face of the crowd (all the while without a mic), making sure everyone knew that she not only knew the words, but that she felt them.   she looked like a 16-year-old wannabe drama student that somebody made the mistake of giving the spotlight to, feeling the lyrics just a bit too much.  couldn't help but think, "get over yourself".   looked really forced.

			-
Yeah - I decided last minute to head on up.

I was back in the crowd, stage left, probably about five to ten feet back of the soundboard.  We didn't move at all between LCD and AF, but I noticed that it seemed as though they were having a lot of troubles balancing the instrumentation.  For example - "Keep the Car Running" didn't seem to have any low end.  The mandolin cut through, Win's vocals were right up front - but I felt as though the drums, bass and pulse of the song were generally lost.  I also noticed a lot of phasing in the sound - whether that was a result of a sound guy trying to fix whatever problem there may have been, or a fluke of location, I don't know.  I was just really surprised at the difference between the two bands.

I thought performance wise, the AF were great.  You're right - they deliver.  Unfortunately I just couldn't get over the sound woes - it always seemed to me that something was dominating the overall sound instead of it all melding together.  Perhaps it could have been a fluke of where we were standing, which would have been unfortunate - we ended up leaving about halfway through the set because we just couldn't make out a lot of the instrumentation.

			-
were you anywhere near the secondary (reinforcing) PA?  maybe it was messing with your perceived mix.

i have a personal rule: primary PA only.  i refuse to be subjected to those behind-the-soundboard speakers.  no one is mixing for them, the timing has to be just right, etc.

You know, I didn't notice if I was, but that would make some measure of sense.  What was so odd was that the LCD Soundsystem mix was perfect, and then Arcade Fire took the stage and everything seemed to get messed up.  Oh well.

I agree with that rule entirely.
